‘Save The Vaquita!’ A new mural by Art Of The Endangered in Manhattan Beach, calling attention to the urgent plight of the vaquita, the world’s most endangered marine mammal. Less than ten vaquitas are estimated to be alive today. This project was produced by Impermanent Art in partnership with Pangeaseed and their Seawalls "Artists For Oceans" inititative. Not just sharks are threatened by overfishing, vaquitas are too! The name vaquita means “little cow” in Spanish. The vaquita is endemic to the northern Gulf of California, Mexico and is the world’s most critically endangered small cetacean in the world (Rojas-Brancho 2006). The vaquita population is in decline due to illegal fishing with gill-nets for the endangered totoaba, a large fish sought after for its swim bladder (D’agrosa 2003). According to WWF, the swim bladders are often illegally smuggled over the US border and then shipped to China where it can sell up to USD 8,500 per kilogram in the black market. They are often trapped and drowned in gillnets used by illegal fishing operations in marine protected areas within Northern Gulf of California. . Some special features they have are large dark ring around their eyes and dark patches on its lips that form a thin line from the mouth to the pectoral fins. New born Vaquita have darker coloration as compared to the adults. They can weigh up to 120 pounds and grow up to 5ft in height. . The status of Vaquita currently is Critically Endangered 😭 . DescriptionThe vaquita is a species of porpoise endemic to the northern part of the Gulf of California that is on the brink of extinction. Based on beached skulls found in 1950 and 1951, the scientific description of the species was published in 1958. The word vaquita is Spanish for "little cow". Vaquitas are the smallest porpoise and among the smallest cetaceans. I think we are down to 19 of these lil guys. This is the smallest species of porpoise called the Vaquita. In trying fish the Totoaba (another endangered animal) using gillnets fishermen instead catch these guys and if they don't escape, they drown in the nets ;^;.
