The cruel and inhumane trafficking in Pangolins in Vietnam and throughout Southeast Asia must be stopped! On August 3rd 2017, we received a phone call alerting us to a confiscation of 72 critically endangered Sunda Pangolins and Chinese Pangolins who were detected by Vietnamese government authorities trying to cross into China as part of the illegal wildlife trade, to be sold for traditional medicine and bushmeat. We deployed our Rapid Response Team on a rescue mission that lasted 12 hours, from 5pm until 5am. Sadly, by the time we arrived, only 34 Pangolin were still alive. Many of them have injuries that appear to have been sustained during capture from the wild, as hunters use snare traps or cut through the tree branches to get the Pangolin hiding in the hollow. Pangolins instinctively curl up in a tight ball when afraid and the hunters tie them in mesh bags so tightly that they are unable to uncoil and many suffocate in their own urine and faeces. Before being traded, they were forcefully uncurled, had a tube inserted down their throat and had their stomachs pumped full of gruel so they weighed more for sale. They are of course human caused, with an 80-100% increase over the same period last year. And yes this is a critical habitat for the survival and biodiversity of this planet- on the global warming front alone we were already in deep shit! Huge swaths of smoke were shown covering Brazil from satellite photos. Unbelievable, this is a horrible crime against the Earth! The criminals in power must be held accountable, yet the system protects them. The situation is so frustrating and it can easily make you feel powerless in the scope of it. That is natural-  I know I've been feeling it too. But we can, and must, do something. I did some research on efforts happening NOW to help mitigate the harm happening and make change. 🌀Race against TIME🌀November is here and there's just a few weeks to finish this book. I'm working hard and pushing myself into new territories with my art, perhaps like dolphins jumping through hoops of fire- for our fellow endangered species face much worse as we put them through the ringer. How can this BE- there are only 30 Vaquita porpoises left on Earth!! Or less?? This race against time is faster than my pen can meet paper.. there is no sand in the hourglass left to delay. I & we must tell the World of their beauty, rarity and dire need of our attention and care. This Urgency pushes me toward the finish line at a soul level, I cannot fail. Here I am drawing the latest page for my @lastchanceearth coloring book, of the one of the most sacred and unusual of hooved creatures, the Okapi!!! Their loving and nurturing nature is evident here, as a mother tends to her young! They originated from the Congo in central Africa and are unfortunately endangered. The okapi and the giraffe are the only living members of the family Giraffidae. 🌀Hurricane Help Alert🌀 Have you ever seen a corny sloth in the clink? Well now you have! There’s just something precious about this laid back sloth sniffin corn. The reason is this- Hurricanes Irma and Maria have affected wildlife hugely, not just humans and pets. When it comes to keeping wild animals of Florida safe, zoos, sanctuaries and rescues got creative. One animal welfare non-profit in Key West, Florida, this meant sending its ‘critters into the clink’- a jail that had been evacuated. Happy Inktober! I am back in action with this now inked drawing of three Markor for my endangered species coloring book, Last Chance Earth. The colloquial name is thought by some to be derived from the Persian word mar, meaning snake, and khor, meaning "eater", which is sometimes interpreted to either represent the species' ability to kill snakes, or as a reference to its corkscrewing horns reminiscent of coiling snakes. These extraordinary wild goats are a large species endemic to northeastern Afghanistan, Pakistan, Kashmir, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and the Himalayas. They were listed as endangered on the IUCN redlist in 2015, and have been making a recovery since.
