[DLD] Stage play “Vanitas no Carte“ stream English subtitle

Hello everyone! As I mentioned in my previous post, I’ll try to upload other subtitles I’ve been working on, so here comes another one.

Looking forward to the reprise of the stage, I present you the English subtitle for the stage “Vanitas no Carte“. About the story:

Scorned by others of his kind for being born under a blue moon, the vampire Vanitas grew afraid and desolate. According to legend, he created a cursed grimoire known as the "Book of Vanitas," and it is said he would one day use it to bring retribution upon all vampires of the crimson moon. In 19th century Paris, Noé Archiviste is searching for the fabled Book of Vanitas. Whilst traveling aboard an airship, he is saved from a vampire attack by an eccentric doctor who calls himself Vanitas and carries the very tome he seeks. Ironically, the self-proclaimed vampire specialist is a mere human who inherited both his name and the book from his master, the same Vanitas of legend.

Here's trivia for Cutie Honey episode 23: “The Bewitching Scorpio Woman.”

The title of this episode is a reference to Kenichi Mikawa’s 1972 hit song, Sasoriza Onna or Scorpio Woman. 

Despite what the credits say, Scorpion Panther was not voiced by Toshiko Sawada, but rather by the legendary Masako Nozawa. While best known for voicing Son Goku in the Dragon Ball franchise, around this time she was voicing Hiroshi in The Gutsy Frog and the titular character of Dororon Enma-kun. 

Nozawa also voiced the unnamed young student who announces the Paradise Academy pig race.

The name of Naojiro’s pig, “Abashiri Hope”, is another reference to the Abashiri Family manga. The name “Abashiri” likely comes from the Abashiri Prison located in Abashiri, Hokkaido prefecture in Japan. Or more specifically, it’s probably in reference to the popular 1965 film inspired by the prison called Abashiri Bangaichi.

During the wrestling match Naojiro refrains from announcing Honey’s measurements. According to the January 1974 issue of TV Magazine, Honey’s measurements are:

Height: 158 cm 

Bust: 84 cm 

Waist: 49 cm 

Hip: 85 cm 

Weight: 43 kilos

The heavyset student who’s excited to see Scorpion Panther enter the boat race was originally from the Devilman manga. He’s one of the bullies who harasses Miki and Akira. This same character later appears as a police officer in the fifth episode of New Cutey Honey.

In this episode only, Seiji claims he works for a newspaper called the "Modern Times", which is possibly a reference to the Charlie Chaplin film of the same name. In the beginning of the series, he was a reporter for the real-life Tonichi News.

Sonic : Here we are guys. Everyone's prepared for the final race in the Sand Ruins area! But I don't know why Someone wants to sabotage my extreme gear so that Jet wants to cheat me. I don't even trust this guy. But for this mysterious racer that has another Blue Star like mine, I have no idea how did she won the Ex-World Grand Prix tournament?

Mysterious Racer : Think fast, Blue hedgehog. It'll be your lucky day. I bet you won't even compromise the fact that I would be today's winner of the grand prix.

Sonic : You bet.

Jet : So this one's the mysterious racer. I bet it's suspicious that he's one heck of a extreme gear champion. He has to be Beat, that skating graffiti punk that has causing the cops trouble in the streets of Tokyo.

Mysterious Racer : You were talking about me? You hardly recognized that you'll regret once I eliminate you, and then you'll sabotage on the ground.

Jet : So much for a racer like you. I wonder how long if we keep this up?

Eggman : And So, final the race begins now.

Omochao : Riders! This is the main event of your lives! Winner of the Grand prix will be the champion!

Sonic : Alright! Bring it on!

Jet : No way I'm gonna lose!

Mysterious Racer : Here I go!

Omochao : (counting down) 4...3...2...1....GO!

(the group races off)

Omochao : And they're off!

Wave : (snickers) Everything that how the story of Riders to make a single trick in the book. With our plans in motion, I will trick sonic into losing the race, letting Jet win and get our hands on the treasure of Babylon. Easy as...(in front of her are three mysterious racers) pie?

Mysterious Racer A : What do you think you're doing, punk? Using a detonation device to let that bird brain win the race by cheating?

Wave : (in shocked) How...How on earth did you know that?

Mysterious Racer B : You were going to cheat at the race, I knew we couldn't trust a punk like you causing trouble. We won't let you get your hands on that treasure!

Mysterious Racer C : So that is why we are going to teach you a lesson.

Wave : (nervously) Hey, uhh, fellas. I got something important for you to ask, this was all kind of a mix up. You wouldn't hurt a mechanic with glasses, would ya? Heh.

(sounds of Wave getting beaten up by the mysterious racers)

Wave : Oof! AUGH!! Easy on the arms! OW! That's my beak! My tail feathers! That smarts! My eyes! My face, my eyes, but anything but my face!!!

Storm : (to the viewers) Gee, am I the lucky one that is not only to cheat. I was lucky that I didn't get the attention of...(he is now surrounded by the three mysterious racers) getting beaten to a pulp. Ah, nuts. At least you're not gonna hurt me are you? (gets beaten up by the racers) AH! Hey! No fair! Not my beak! Oof! My tail feathers! Not in the face! Not in the face! Uncle! Uncle!

"Two laps later..."

Omochao : And we are down with one more lap and the winner will be champion of the Ex-World Grand Prix, Who's it going to be, Sonic, Jet, or the mysterious racer?

Sonic : I'm gonna win big here!

Mysterious Racer : Not if I can help it!

Jet : No! I'm supposed to win! It should've been me! I'm the champion! I deserve my throne!

Mysterious Racer A : Nice work, you guys. That should stop them from ever being cheated into winning! Because cheaters never win! (the racer unhoods to reveal herself as Sayaka Miyata)

Wave : Wait a sec. A girl? We got beaten up for cheating by a human girl!? So the mysterious racers are...(As does, the mysterious racers revealed to the main cast of Keijo)

Storm : They're all girls! Who are you guys!?

Sayaka Miyata : My name is Sayaka Miki and we are the friends of Nozomi Kaminashi to stop you guys ever cheat to win the race. See this little device that triggers to one's Extreme gear? (presses button to sabotage Jet's Extreme Gear board)

Jet : AAAH! My board!

Sayaka Miyata : We had enough of your dirty tricks and this is why you should've been disqualified. Never let cheaters like you to win!

Omochao : Jet's unable to use his board and is immediately disqualified! So the winner of this here tournament...is a tie!

Jet : Oh bite my shiny chicken butt!

Bender (from the left) : You mean "Bite my shiny metal ass", meatbag!

Mysterious Racer : Sorry to break it to you, I had to win together if I ever let you caught yourself cheating in a race. Cheaters never win, and this is the reason for me to teach you that opportunity of yours.

Jet : Hey, I was participating in this gig and even I maxed out my student loans on that board! Who do you think you are, you...you...(stutters in awe and mumbles) Hubba Hubba, Who's this pretty lady?

(it is revealed that the mysterious racer is none other than Nozomi Kaminashi)

Sonic : Wait, you're a girl? You did that for me to win? Who or what are you?

Omochao : Well, I don't believe the winners of the EX-World Grand Prix is Sonic and the mysterious race turns out to be a mysterious girl! Who was secretly participating in the grand prix, Nozomi Kaminashi!

Sonic : Nozomi Kaminashi? You're the mysterious racer? Why do you look like a 17-year old girl?

Nozomi Kaminashi : You didn't remember? This is only Age Progression that works in any logic, I do look like a 17-year old girl, but I'm only 9 years old.

Sonic : WHAAAAAAT!?!

(Everyone except for Knuckles gasped)

E-1000r : Gasp.

Sonic : You're Nozomi Kaminashi and did you say that you were only 9 years old?

Nozomi Kaminashi : That is correct. The other Mysterious racers are also claiming to be my friends.

Sonic : Your friends? Are they girls as well?

Nozomi Kaminashi : Yes, they are Sayaka Miyata, Non Toyoguchi, and Kanaze Aoba.

Sonic : Wait, isn't Aoba the name of that blue haired guy that we foreshadowed in 2012 and he's a homophobic. And wears a pair of headsets to think that he's a girl! But he's a dude with long hair to make him a girl! That's how science in japan works! But hey, you hardly saved my life back there. My Blue Star board is totally perfect and fine by the way as we all know it! (Sonic's Blue Star gets sabotaged) Really, man!?

Jet : (nervously laughs) The dirt suits you well. (laughs nervously) Am I right, fellas? *BAM!* Oof! Hey, ribbon girl! What the heck did you do that for!?!

Sonic : That's what you get for trying to cheat in sportsmanship, ya gay-bashing homo! As a matter of fact, here's an apology sandwich. (gives Jet a sandwich)

Jet : But this is just a Sandwich with cheese. And I asked for no mayo!

Nozomi Kaminashi : You accepted your own apology, if you feel like cheating in a race does help you to win, no law enforcement or the officials have to come get your ass and serve prison time along with your co. That's not how Sportsmanship works.

Jet : Bunch of Sissies. *SLAP* Yeah, yeah, I'm eating the sandwich. (forcibly eats the sandwich)

Sonic : Hey, Nozomi, now that we won the race in a tie, I got one question to ask you, Is it me that you look taller then me, or does Babylon Garden has risen out from the ground?

Nozomi Kaminashi : Why would you ask me a question like that? Of course I'm much of a tall girl than you, and what does an island named Babylon Garden has risen out of the...*RUMBLING*

Nozomi Kaminashi : What the...? So that cube in Jet's hand must've activated a long lost ship that was buried beneath the sands. Babylon Garden.

Sonic : I thought an Island like that has foreshadowed Secret Rings. But this looks so real, and it's huge!

Jet : Now do you guys believe me that I felt guilty of being the luckiest guy cheating out of you? Turns out the cube holding in my hand leads to awaken Babylon Garden, which turns out to be a hi-tech alien space--(suddenly the cube in Jet's hand is missing) Wha-!? Hey where did that cube thingy go!? It was right here a minute ago!

Eggman : Thanks for the cube, suckers! Good thing that this was all part of my plan to trick you. Hasta la bye bye, losers!

Hello everyone! I present you the English subtitle for the stage “Vanitas no Carte - Encore“ stream version.

About the story:

Scorned by others of his kind for being born under a blue moon, the  vampire Vanitas grew afraid and desolate. According to legend, he  created a cursed grimoire known as the "Book of Vanitas," and it is said  he would one day use it to bring retribution upon all vampires of the  crimson moon.

In 19th century Paris, Noé Archiviste is searching for the Book of Vanitas. Whilst traveling aboard an airship, he is saved from a  vampire attack by an eccentric doctor who calls himself Vanitas and  carries the very tome he seeks. Ironically, the self-proclaimed vampire  specialist is a mere human who inherited both his name and the book from  his master, the same Vanitas of legend. Christian Samurai and Shimabara

At least 48 sword guards used by samurai warriors during the feudal era belonged to hidden Christians. The artifacts are related to the early history of 16th and 17th century Japan, which saw the persecution of Christians and the Shimabara Rebellion, an uprising of Catholic Christian peasants.

According to The Asahi Shimbun , the Sawada Miki Kinenkan museum in Kanagawa Prefecture, owns 367 sword guards, which were examined by Yuhiko Nakanishi, chairman of nonprofit group Nihon Token Hozon Kai (Japan Sword Preservation Association), and other researchers, and 48 were identified as belonging to Christians. The research took six months, and the results were recently presented.

The Sawada Miki Kinenkan Museum claimed that the items, which went back on display at the museum on May 10, were suspected as belonging to Christians, but the discovery by the team of Nakanishi provided important evidence confirming the legends about Christian samurais.

The discovery is extremely rare due to the anti-Christian policies in Japan at the time, which caused Christians to hide their religion for many centuries. According to the analysis, more than 10 sword guards were made during the Sengoku (Warring States) period (1467-1568). Other swords are believed to have been created after the domination of Toyotomi Hideyoshi (1537-1598). They were also in use after the anti-Christian measures.

The symbols discovered by Nakanashi, which proved the existence of the Christian samurais, included carefully hidden Christian crosses in their designs. During Japan’s anti-Christian policies, Christians were also known to have drawn crosses on objects, such as Buddhist statues and other artifacts. Their aim was to manifest the existence of their secret religion, which the ruling elite tried to stamp out.

In the recently published book, Christ's Samurai: The True Story of the Shimabara Rebellion , by Jonathan Clements, a Visiting Professor at Xi'an Jiaotong University in China, the author described the difficult fate of the Christians in the 17th century. Christianity in Japan has a very old tradition, but for centuries it was not allowed to follow the Christian path, which was made officially illegal in 1614 by Shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu. Christians were branded with hot irons , crucified and dipped repeatedly in boiling water to punish them for being a part of an uprising. One of the famous places of torture was Shimabara castle .

Clements wrote in the introduction to his book :

"In 1638, the ruler of Japan ordered a crusade against his own subjects, a holocaust upon the men, women and children of a doomsday cult. … Introduced a century earlier by foreign missionaries, the sect was said to harbour dark designs to overthrow the government. Its teachers used a dead language that was impenetrable to all but the innermost circle of believers. Its priests preached love and kindness, but helped local warlords acquire firearms. They encouraged believers to cast aside their earthly allegiances and swear loyalty to a foreign god-emperor, before seeking paradise in terrible martyrdoms…"

Clements described in his book a story of a pregnant woman, who was kept in a submerged cage leading to the death of both mother and the baby. This incident perhaps triggered the Shimabara Rebellion, which lasted from December 17, 1637, to April 15, 1638, during the rule of Edo bakufu, the last feudal Japanese military government. The shogun forces slaughtered thousands of Christians. The leader of the rebels was Jerome Amakusa, who has remained an icon of Japanese Christianity until now.

On January 2016, Pope Francis approved the beatification of Takayama Ukon , a Japanese samurai. He was born in 1552, and was baptized at the age of 12. He was a daimyo, a member of the class of ruling feudal lord, who ranked second to the shogun in medieval and early modern Japan. In 1587, when Hideyoshi started a persecution of Christians, Takayama and his father chose instead to forsake their estates and honors to maintain the faith. He was exiled to Manila in 1614, with a group of 300 Catholics. He died there of disease on February 5, 1615.

In 2007 Pope Benedict XVI confirmed that 188 Japanese Christians who died from persecution by the Tokugawa government were selected for beatifications. The ceremonies were held a year later in Nagasaki.

The Case Study of Vanitas Gets Stage Play Adaptation in January of 2022

Funimation describes the story of The Case Study of Vanitas as follows:

  It’s 19th-century Paris, and young vampire Noé hunts for the Book of Vanitas. Attacked by a vampire driven insane, a human intercedes, rescues Noé, and heals the sick creature. Commanding the book and calling himself Vanitas, this doctor tempts Noé with a mad crusade to “cure” the entire vampire race. Allying with one who wields arcane power so easily may be dangerous, but does he have a choice?
