SBC Bookclub : The Westing Game
Tumblr media
Title: The Westing Game Author: Ellen Raskin Genre: Young Reader Mystery
Goodreads Summary :
A bizarre chain of events begins when sixteen unlikely people gather for the reading of Samuel W. Westing's will. And though no one knows why the eccentric, game-loving millionaire has chosen a virtual stranger—and a possible murderer—to inherit his vast fortune, one thing's for sure: Sam Westing may be dead ... but that won't stop him from playing one last game!
Review:
The Westing Game is one of those books that I adored as a kid. This book helped me discover that I loved mysteries and I loved puzzles -- and it helps that it has such a fascinating group of characters at the center of it. It's been a long, long time since I've read it -- and I've been curious to see how it'd hold up.
The story revolves an eccentric millionaire creating a game for his heirs to figure out. It's interesting -- it seems like a standard plot these days, but this book is fifty years old now, I wonder if it was a novel premise back then. Still somewhat unique for a middle grade reader, even if that kind of plot has been over done at this point.
It's an easy read, I read it in one afternoon, and... yeah, I think it holds up pretty decently as an adult. I'm still pretty charmed by the characters and the plot is fun (even if it is a little ridiculous, and slightly nonsensical at points.)
There are a couple of things that stand out to me as an adult...
As a kid, you're supposed to latch on to Turtle - the 13yo who figures everything out at the end. I totally did when I was that age. That makes sense. As an adult, I think Judge Ford was my favorite character - and I'm slightly disappointed (though I completely understand why it's written the way it is) that she doesn't figure everything out. She seems like the most capable one of the bunch. (And would a 13yo be able to put all of this together? Really? But I mean, there's a lot of suspending of disbelief.)
This novel pulls the ridiculous plot point that a(n) (ex-)wife doesn't recognize her husband of thirty years. Agatha Christie tried to pull this once as well. I just kind of laugh at the thought.
I'm a lot more aware of the fact that this book was written in the 70s. While I appreciate that it does have a diverse cast, there's a lot of cringe-y things that were just normal at the time -- such as how people spoke about the disabled, or being casual about Asian stereotypes. It's not egregiously bad or enough to sour the book, but definitely made me think about how a lot of it wouldn't fly today.
Also, a strange detail to throw in - the fact that the black woman's skin is lighter than the Greek family's. ... why? Why can't we have a dark skinned black woman at the heart of this? It's such a weird, throwaway line.
Oh, and not a new thought - but I do like that there's a Greek family in this, and I did as a kid, because it wasn't often to see Greeks in non-ancient related things.
Anyway, I still enjoyed my time with the novel. The mystery is clever and engaging. The characters are still solidly good. I think there are definitely some talking points to me made today - and still worth reading with children (or giving to a kid to ignite their own love of mystery). Still stand by my choice to recommend it.

SBC 3 9 10 (and if youll do multiple OOQT 31 34. yap tf out!!)
SBC
3. weapon of choice? any particular reason they chose their weapon? DEFINITELY a staff guy. Like a cane that they hit you with. They'd not be able to do cool tricks though
9. favorite food? least favorite? are they a picky eater? do they have any dietary restrictions? Probably some boring shit like grits or oatmeal. They're super old so basically anything thats not difficult to digest I imagine
10. if they wear jewelry, what kind? do they prefer silver or gold? do they have a favorite gem? Not really a jewlery kind of guy, and would never wear any of their own volition. I suppose topaz would be a good gem for it though
OOQT
31. do they like receiving gifts? giving gifts? what is their ideal gift? As an iterator, she receives a LOT of gifts. More so than others, since she's more deity-like compared to the rest of her group. But she's pretty bad at returning gifts, and honestly isn't sure what to do with what she is given most the time. I think her ideal gift would be to just not get her one at all.
34. how would your character describe themselves? it doesn't have to line up with how they really are. She'd describe herself as an apathetic critic. Someone who enjoys the arts. Quartz sees herself as kinda introverted too, even if shes not. She just doesn't really like the people she IS around with I suppose...

Why the FUCK do old games not have a hey buddy I think you’re severely frustrated with this hella precise section of this game. You wanna cheat real fast so you don’t break something? It’s okay. Becaue that FUCKING rat in fucking chrono trigger can eat my ass my entire fucking ass I rage quit so hard I didn’t save after the stupid robot I fought so if I ever get into the game again, which will be a WHILE from now, I will be playing the snes version. Because fuck doing that without slow motion available to me. Why the fuck didn’t anyone say here is my save from after the rat? They’re dicks for saying it’s easy it’s so fucking hard it’s like pixel perfect and cronos wide ass gets caught on a pixel width ledge every time when I’ve almost got the thing! I don’t want to practice, I want the TURN BASED GAME to not require quick motions to make any fucking progress!

Cactus fascinates me, does it run on code similar to an existing instruction set or is it completely original on that front?
What can you do with it? What's it's storage?
Tumblr media
Both the Cactus (the original wooden prototype from years ago) and the new PCB Cactus(es) are essentially derived from a minimal 6502 computer design by Grant Searle for their core logic. Here's what that would look like on a breadboard:
Tumblr media
There isn't much to it, it's 32K of RAM, 16K of ROM containing Ohio Scientific's version of Microsoft BASIC, a 6850 ACIA for serial interaction, some logic gates, and of course a 6502 microprocessor (NMOS or CMOS, doesn't matter which). You hook it into a terminal and away you go.
Grant's design in turn can be best described as a distilled, modernized version of the OSI Challenger series of computers. Here's an OSI-400 and a Challenger 4P respectively:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The left one is a replica of the 400 circa 1976, also called the Superboard. It was affordable, endlessly reconfigurable and hackable, but ultimately very limited in capabilities. No BASIC, minimal monitor ROM you talk to over serial, but you could connect it to a bus to augment its features and turn it into a more powerful computer.
Whereas the OSI C4P on the right from about 1979 has more RAM, a video card, keyboard, BASIC built in, serial interface, cassette tape storage, and that's just the standard configuration. There was more room to expand and augment it to your needs inside the chassis (alot changed in 3 years for home computer users).
Grant's minimal 6502 design running OSI BASIC is a good starter project for hobbyists. I learned about the 6502's memory map decoding from his design. I modified and implemented his design on a separate cards that could connect to a larger backplane.
Tumblr media
Here are the serial, ROM, RAM, and CPU cards respectively:
Tumblr media
Each one is 100% custom, containing many modifications and fixes as I developed the design. However, that's only half of the computer.
I really wanted a 6502 machine with a front panel. People told me "nobody did that", or couldn't think of examples from the 1970s but that seemed really strange to me. Especially since I had evidence to the contrary in the form of the OSI-300:
Tumblr media
This one I saw at VCF West back in 2018 illustrates just how limited of a design it is. 128 bytes of RAM, no ROM, no serial -- just you, the CPU, and toggle switches and LEDs to learn the CPU. I was inspired the first time I saw one in 2015 at VCF East, which is probably when this whole project got set in motion.
Later that year I bought a kit for a miniature replica OSI-300 made by Christopher Bachman, and learned really quickly how limited the design philosophy for this particular front panel was. It was a major pain in the ass to use (to be clear, that's by OSI's choice, not any fault of Christopher in his implementation)
Tumblr media
So... I designed my own. Took awhile, but that's the core of what the Cactus is: my attempt at experiencing the 1970s homebrew scene by building the computer I would have wanted at the time. Over half of the logic in the Cactus is just to run the front panel's state machine, so you can examine and modify the contents of memory without bothering the 6502. I added in all of the things I liked from more advanced front panels I had encountered, and designed it to my liking.
Here's the original front panel, accompanying logic, and backplane connected to the modern single board computer (SBC) version of the machine:
Tumblr media
And here's the new Cactus SBC working with the new front panel PCB, which combines the logic, physical switch mountings, and cabling harnesses into a single printed circuit board.
Tumblr media
So, what can you do with it? Pretty much the same things I do already with other contemporary 1970s computers: play around in BASIC, fire up the occasional game, and tinker with it.
I've got no permanent storage designed for the Cactus as yet, it's been one of those "eventually" things. The good news is that a variety of software can be ported to the hardware without too much trouble for an experienced hobbyist. A friend of mine wrote a game called ZNEK in 6502 assembly which runs from a terminal:
Tumblr media
Right now, you have to either toggle in machine programs from the front panel from scratch, burn a custom ROM, or connect it to a serial terminal to gain access to its more advanced features:
Tumblr media
Here's it booted into OSI BASIC, but I have also added in a modern descendant of Steve Wozniak's WOZMON software for when I need to do lower level debugging.
I've also got a video card now, based on the OSI-440. I have yet to implement a keyboard, or modify BASIC to use the video board instead of the serial connection. Even if I did, screen resolution is pretty limited at 24x24 characters on screen at once. Still, I'm working on that...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Anyway, I hope that answers your question. Check the tags below to see the whole process stretching back to 2017 if you're curious to learn more of the project's history. I'm also happy to answer any more questions you might have about the project.

Out of curiousity, how did you get into doing this sort of computer work? Especially more low level stuff. :]
How can other people get into it / what would you like to see people make in the future in this area?
- Aspiring Programmer
I was an extremely poor kid, in middle school I learned about piracy which led to me getting into FOSS software for media conversion so I could load a bunch of media onto my psp. A short time later I learned about cfw, custom firmware, for psps when I was trying to figure out how pirating games for the system worked, that led to my first hardware hacking, at the time you needed to make a "magic battery" in order to save money on hacking the system which luckily for me I was able to do with a busted battery. That was really my big start because it was so exciting to be a poor kid with access to tons of games and media all of a sudden. Since then I've been very interested in firmware work and embedded systems, though I definitely didnt know thats what it was at the time.
For getting into software/hardware hacking/programming in a similar way I'd seriously recommend getting a cheap SBC, something like a Raspberry Pi Zero or just a Raspberry Pi is a good place to start especially since there are tons of projects for those boards that you can hack on and tons of very useful programs like pi-hole which does DNS ad blocking.
As to what I'd like to see people do: more projects dealing with media on these kinds of systems, video djing, glitch art, etc, because usually you're limited to something like VLC for media.

We were recently re-introduced to this fun little piece of soulbonding history! The soulbonding code, which is like the multiple code but for soulbonders specifically. We might make an updated version of it :3
We decided to try it out so here's ours along with the explanation under the cut!
SBC N++ G (bO sO+&/F+) O.cS+ eAaf&+/C+/Va+f Sp.O+/F#/S/Su+/A+/Dr~+/Un+/Sh+ i++ S+ A+ W
We have around 30-40 soulbonds.
We're collectively non binary and have a majority of other/non-binary soulbonds with a few female ones as well.
We have soulbonds from original stories; several anime/cartoon characters from alternate universes, fan characters, and a crossover univrse; more than one from comic books/manga; more than one from alternative universes of video games and one fan character.
We have several bonds of other species. The bonder is a fairy, and they have a ghost bond, more than one supernatural bond, more than one alien, dragons that are different from common ideas, undead bonds, and shapeshifters.
Our bonds have a pretty active role in our life.
We decided to skip the fandom bits in the code- partially because our opinion of roleplaying is too complicated for what the code offers and because we're a bit more interested in the soulbonding specific stuff. We did do the last two things though, which were art and writing!
We do art quite a bit and post it, and we occasionally write stories- we mostly daydream them though.

SBC Bookclub : Games Untold
Tumblr media
Title: Games Untold Author: Jennifer Lynn Barnes Genre: YA Mystery
Goodreads Summary :
An amnesiac playboy and the woman with every reason to hate him. A daredevil, his favorite heiress, and three nights in Prague. An unlikely pairing between a cowboy and a goth. Four brothers with an inescapable bond, strengthened by the family they chose, in a house of wonders that promises to always deliver one more secret.
Review :
Am I catching up on this because I didn't expect to enjoy The Brothers Hawthorne as much as I did? Why yes - yes I am. I'm always a little weary of these kind of books - short story collections that are slightly related but explore different avenues. But I was pleasantly surprised. I enjoyed this way more than I thought I would. And you can tell there was a theme of love stories throughout, which, you know, was kind of sweet.
Alright, breaking down the stories :
That Night in Prague (novella) - This is a story about Avery and Jameson and their running around Prague playing games with each other. Ngl, I have zero memory that there was missing moments in Prague that Barnes is clearly playing with (and secrets she doesn't even reveal in this novella).
But you know, I did like it. I enjoy Avery and Jameson's dynamic, and enjoy the romance story. It's still incredibly tame - even for YA but there are definitely some really beautiful moments here.
The Same Backward as Forward (novella) :
When I saw this took up over half the book I was a little concerned that it was going to draaaaag or feel over indulgent. And I'm kind of shocked that not only was I wrong, it's by far the best thing written in the book.
The story is a flashback to Hannah (Avery's mom) and her story of meeting Toby Hawthorne II and their (some what pseudo-) love story. This novella has a tad bit of edge around it as it's somewhat a enemies to loves, hurt/comfort kind of story. But it really works.
Also working for me is probably the flashback element. Jennifer Lynn Barnes is my age, and she sets these characters back in a time period that feels nostalgic to me (and possibly to the author, too). It was an interesting element added in.
The one thing that, idk doesn't hinder it, but does stand out (?) is the fact that Hannah and Toby read very much like Avery and Jameson. In some of the afterwards notes, Barnes mentioned this wasn't intentional and kind of just happened. But it's interesting that it was so noticeable (to me). It's not that it doesn't work for the story - but does make me wonder if Barnes kind of locks into certain character types.
The Cowboy and the Goth -
This is the story of Nash and Libby falling in love with each other. It's sweet. I think Nash (and Libby to an extent) get the short end of the stick in these books, so it's nice to see this part of the story fleshed out a bit. It feels more like connective tissue left out of the original story, though, more than a stand alone story.
Five Times Xander Tackled Someone (and One Time He Didn't) -
This is cute, gives some depth to Xander. Not one that really stuck out to me, but it's fun.
One Hawthorne Night -
Poor Grayson doesn't really get a love story. He gets a ridiculous, somewhat fanfic-y retelling of a time when his brothers made him pay up with a bunch of shenanigans. I wanted to like this more than I did. The first part - Grayson kind of setting things up and getting into the action was fun. Then it was a little.. meh.
What Happens in the Treehouse -
This almost feels like a variation on the previous one, only this time it's an all-nighter full of brother shenanigans to celebrate Nash's engagement to Libby. I like the idea -- and getting all the boys together is a lot of fun. But... it's so ridiculous and over the top and more action based than character based that. Idk. Another one I didn't like as much as I wish I did.
$3CR3T $@NT@ -
The Hawthorns have a unique way of playing Secret Santa and rope Avery and Libby into playing with them.
I kinda loved this one because it was all puzzle and game related and a ton of fun. Not sure that I fully by the ending. But it's definitely the most creative story of the bunch and has a TON of heart behind it.
Pain at the Right Gun -
This one is an incredibly short addition to the first novella about Progue. We learn Jameson's secret. And I'm a little like... okay, what is the point of this twist? Is it relevant to the next series set in this world? Where are we going with this? It was fine but felt more like a deleted scene, or one of those after credit scenes to Marvel films.
My edition of the book includes some notes and some ideas Barnes included for stories she didn't write. Which was kind of cool to read.
Overall, if you enjoy this world, you'll probably enjoy these short stories as well.

June 2025: Christianity: Southern Baptists Opposed To Gay Marriage
At their annual convention on June 10, 2025, in Dallas, Texas, the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC), the largest Protestant denomination in the United States, voted overwhelmingly to oppose same-sex marriage, passing a resolution that calls for overturning the Supreme Court’s 2015 Obergefell v. Hodges decision, which legalized same-sex marriage nationwide. With over 10,000 church representatives in attendance, the resolution, titled “On Restoring Moral Clarity through God’s Design for Gender, Marriage, and the Family,” not only denounces marriage equality but also urges lawmakers to affirm marriage as exclusively between one man and one woman, drawing inspiration from the Christian conservative movement’s success in overturning Roe v. Wade in 2022.
Authored by Andrew Walker, an ethicist at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, the resolution frames the effort as a long-term strategy to challenge Obergefell both legally and culturally. Walker acknowledged the uphill battle, noting that over 70% of Americans support marriage equality according to 2022 polls, but emphasized a “long game” approach, citing the decades-long campaign against abortion as a model. The 2022 Dobbs v. Jackson decision, which ended federal abortion protections, has emboldened evangelical activists, with some Supreme Court justices, like Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito, signaling openness to revisiting Obergefell due to its reliance on similar legal reasoning as Roe.
The resolution’s scope extends beyond marriage, advocating for defunding Planned Parenthood, promoting parental rights in education and healthcare, ensuring “safety and fairness” in women’s sports by excluding transgender women, and criticizing “willful childlessness,” reflecting the SBC’s alignment with the broader Christian right, particularly under the influence of President Donald Trump’s judicial appointments. This marks a significant escalation in the SBC’s decades-long opposition to LGBTQ+ rights, which began with a 1980 resolution against same-sex marriage and includes 22 resolutions over the years, support for the Defense of Marriage Act, and opposition to anti-discrimination protections and transgender rights.
The vote, proposed by traditionalist leader Denny Burk and building on the 2017 Nashville Statement, faced no debate, underscoring the denomination’s conservative consensus. Human rights groups, like the Human Rights Campaign, condemned the resolution as a “boldened attack,” with Laurel Powell asserting that marriage equality is “settled law” backed by most Americans. Wayne Besen of Truth Wins Out called it a “destructive message” prioritizing denial of equal rights. On X, users like @girlsreallyrule warned of a broader threat to marriage equality, while @ChristnNitemare noted the SBC’s conservative agenda, with some Republican-led states, like Idaho, introducing similar anti-Obergefell resolutions.
Overturning Obergefell faces significant obstacles, including widespread public support for same-sex marriage, with 68% of Americans in a May 2025 Gallup poll favoring equal rights, and the 2022 Respect for Marriage Act, which codified federal recognition of same-sex marriages. Unlike Roe, a reversal of Obergefell would not automatically ban same-sex marriage nationwide, as 36 states had legalized it by 2015, but could create a patchwork of state-level restrictions. Internally, the SBC is grappling with a 3.6 million member decline over two decades and a sexual abuse crisis, highlighted by the recent death of whistleblower Jennifer Lyell, yet its focus on same-sex marriage underscores a commitment to cultural battles.
Leaders like Burk embrace a “prophetic minority” role, but critics argue this risks alienating younger generations and shrinking the denomination’s influence as public opinion trends toward inclusivity. The resolution’s call to emulate the anti-abortion movement has heightened alarm among LGBTQ+ advocates, who see it as part of a broader assault on civil rights, including transgender protections. As the SBC pursues legal challenges, political lobbying, and cultural campaigns, the fight to overturn Obergefell remains uncertain but has reignited a polarizing debate, signaling that the battle over marriage equality is far from over. As Oscar Wilde once wrote, “Many lack the originality to lack originality,” a reminder that the SBC’s recycled strategy against evolving social norms may struggle to reshape a world increasingly embracing love’s diverse forms.

WSL Team of the Season - FC25
Tumblr media
(From an account who other people seem to confirm is generally reliable, leaving the names in for credit).
So, excluding the Honourable Mentions and the SBCs (I've seen a leak that Terland is an SBC, but I'm not sure if that's honourable mention or something else), this is the WSL Team of the Season cards for FC25.
I think, broadly, (bearing it mind it should just be about individual performance during the season) it's not bad, but some of that does depend on who the Honourable Mentions are. I also do wish there was more variation in the other promos which aren't on individual achievement necessarily, because 8 of those cards have other promo cards, and some of them have multiple promo cards.
For example, McCabe also has a Centurions card (played 100 games or goals for club) and a UWCL Dreamchaser's card. Either another Arsenal player could have gotten the UWCL Dreamchaser card (since McCabe already had the Centurion's card) or the Centurion could have gone to a player in a team lower down in the league.
Ash Neville has 100+ appearances for Spurs, Megan Finnigan has 100+ appearances for Everton, and calculating backwards, that would have been the case at the time of the Centurion's promo.
Anyway, more below the cut:
Top to bottom then.
Shaw - Obviously, you could make the argument that she has been out for a lot of the season, but even with her injury Shaw is joint top goal scorer this season at the moment and joint second for goals and assists. You could argue that her and Terland could be interchangeable for TOTS or HM, but I'm not surprised to see Shaw here.
Russo - Joint golden boot, top for goals and assists, and has been strong for Arsenal this year, again, think she deserves to be here.
Mariona - Genuinely team-changing and game-changing for Arsenal. Absolutely deserves to be here.
Nüsken - This is the first player who gave me pause. I do think Nüsken's qualities and contributions do sometimes go unseen, and she's had a solid enough season. Where I'm not sure is if she has had a better season than, say, Cuthbert or Hasegawa? I don't know. I might have chosen Cuthbert here.
Le Tissier - No qualms at all about her being here, think it's deserved on performance.
Bronze - I don't know. She's had some really, really good games and also had some shockers. She's been good more than she's been poor. If I was picking, I might have gone for Riviere or Fox just for the stronger consistency in performances.
McCabe - If Baltimore wasn't the LB of the season (and I would have put her there on performance), McCabe is the best choice here I think. There are other LBs who have had good games, but again the consistency comes up.
Tullis-Joyce - I think they mostly go by Golden Glove for the Goalkeeper of the Season anyway, but Tullis-Joyce deserves a promo card for sure.
Fowler - Joint second for Goals and Assists, top for assists, and while City overall have struggled, Fowler was a big reason why they even still have a chance of that Champion's League spot next year. She had to step up majorly with all the injuries. I think this is deserved, on balance.
Clinton - Not sure about Clinton. She is another player who had inconsistent games, being very ineffective and distracted for a run of games, then has improved as she's resettled. I think you could make an argument for another midfielder putting in a more consistent performance here.
Bright - A bit like Bronze, Bright has had some amazing games and some poor games, with more good games than not. Like with Bronze, you could make a convincing argument for another player being more consistently good in this position. But not wholly undeserved.
Honourable Mentions:
As mentioned, Terland might be a an Honourable Mention, and I've seen some murmurings about Nikita Parris being another.
I think Viviane Asseyi deserves an Honourable Mention. She is massively underappreciated and under-rated, despite currently being 2nd on assists for the league and joint-second for goals and assists.
There's a few others who could be in with a shout for an HM as well, but I think Asseyi is the one who should get one. Even if it makes my Evo card obsolete 😅

All of the game recaps about the SBC acknowledge the team looked it’s best with Shaw as the 10 over Lindsey. Everyone is seeing it except Twila apparently.
Lindsey is too slow and uncreative to be a good 10.
