Welcome to Cheaper Eggs! This is a Tumblr sideblog maintained by an American as a current events / historical archive logging the average prices of common household goods / groceries starting in late January, 2025. (The blog has its origins on Feburary 4th, 2025, but some of the first pictures were taken on January 30th, 2025). Author lives near several grocery stores (and works in one as of the time of the blog-start) and will be posting captures from different supermarkets for price-comparison / general consensus of goods purposes. Northeastern U.S.-centric. During the 2024 election, the economy was front and center in both major parties' campaigns with a heavy emphasis on the price of gas and upon grocery prices. "Cheaper eggs!" became a rallying cry for pretty much every candidate for high office everywhere. H1N1 is a problem that no leader can control, but there are ways to mitigate the damage that are not being taken. I decided to be honest with myself and modify this pin-post: Yeah, it's political. Everything is political. Our leaders *do* have an amount of sway over corporate price-gouging that they can choose to exercise, or, they can perpetuate "business-friendly" de-regulation that screws over the common person. They cannot control everything, but they can control some of it if they bother to hold up their campaign promises, and so I've decided to put some political content here as well, even though it will remain, for the most part, a price-tracking blog. This blog will also cover random other products such as meats (usually, but not always a domestic product) and fruits and vegetables (many of which are imported). Who knows? I might even get word ahead of time on recalls via my job, allowing me to be a bit helpful. No Asks, No Replies. Reblogs with and without commentary VERY WELCOME, although I will not be replying / reblogging the reblogs. This is just an informational archive for curiosity's sake (watching where the goods prices go over the year or more) and an attempt to keep anyone, right, left, center, upside-down or sideways from gaslighting the average U.S. grocery consumer on whether prices are going up or down. I am as likely to keep a record of things that become surprisingly cheap as well as those that are surprisingly pricey. Scancodes and PLUs censored by whimsical censorship-critters. Thinking about ergonomic keyboards has also made me think about keyboard layouts, especially making a layout that has minimal changes to qwerty but with improvements for programming as well as extensions to allow for additional unicode characters.

Things like putting underscore on Shift-Space come to mind given that underscores are mostly used as word separators like space, as well as putting each of the closing brackets on Shift- with their corresponding opening brackets given that most IDEs nowadays will autoclose brackets.

I'm also trying to work out the best way to combine modifiers with layers¹. With a single layer each key can act as up to four characters², but the AltGr-Shift- versions are not particularly nice to type so probably shouldn't be used that much. Layers are great if you might need to type multiple characters from the layer, but annoying if you only need one or two at a time.

I don't really know what ZMK can do³, I need to look up if it's possible to have a key act as a modifier when holding and a layer switch on a tap. Something like merging CapsLock and Shift given that you never need to tap Shift.

¹ Not to mention dead/compose key type things.

² If you're used to a layout with AltGr that is, I don't know if it's only the US that's missing one or other countries as well. I guess with a custom layout you could add more modifier keys but it seems like a bad idea, and I don't think 8 characters per key on a single layer is very necessary.

³ I don't know how it works at all actually, like how does it interact with OS keyboard layouts on the actual computer. I've seen people say that with programmable keyboards you can move between computers without having to have some special software installed on them, but surely if the computers are set up for different keyboard layouts then the scancodes that the keyboard is sending will result in different characters right? Am I just limited to only being able to type what the OS layout includes?⁴

⁴ I should probably just ask Reddit, they'll most likely be better than trying to get Google to find what I want or rambling on Tumblr.

like bro that key literally does not exist on the standard american keyboard or standard us locale in operating systems. there's just two alt keys with different scancodes, due to historic reasons. sometimes special compact keyboards for desktop and on laptops actually remove the right alt key altogether so it wouldn't even work with an intentional locale switch!

it's just like brits saying it's easy to write the £ "cuz it's right on the keyboard". like no. ours don't have that symbol. a lot of national keyboards don't have that symbol either.

Для того чтобы вывести на чистую воду как говорят демона мне нужно было бы отказаться от Люцифера. Мне нужно было внутри себя больше не желать его вашего Люцифера тем какое у него лицо и тело сейчас сколько у него в окружении таких как я типа.

That and there are some poor choices in the code itself.

Why is the magic number 103 the case here? I'm guessing it's a keyboard scancode, but I don't actually know. This needs to be a symbolic constant.

Why are there two if statements where one will do? Comments say "for performance", but && short-circuits already so this is semantically equivalent to a single if, and more to the point branches are crazy expensive so this would probably perform worse than an implementation that did the comparison and only branched at the end.

Like, none of this matters for the bit, it just weirdly bugged me.

Technical details: So the minecraft side is relatively simple. It's 30 ComputerCraft computers running identical code that simply monitors the back of the computer for a redstone signal. When it sees one, it makes an HTTP call to localhost:3000/<COMPUTER ID>.

(Computer IDs are simply the order in which I placed them down, and are effectively random.)

that local webserver is a small Flask application:

It manages shift key state (since the keys don't know about each other, the "A" key can't know if it should send "a" or "A") by toggling an internal shift value when the shift key is pressed. It translates the scankeys to ASCII values, and UDP's them to the microcontroller.

The microcontroller is a Raspberry Pi Pico W, running a simple arduino sketch that connects to the wifi and listens for UDP packets. When it gets one, it presses that key to the attached computer.

I ran minecraft on my main laptop (windows 10), and opened firefox to bluesky on my linux laptop, with the Pi-Cow plugged in via USB. It worked quite well, other than having to synchronize OBS across both computers to record this video.

this heavily minimalist keyboard can't type numbers or special characters other than space and !, but it can be trivially expanded: Simply place down another computer with a button on it in Minecraft, copy the code onto it (I did this using ComputerCraft floppy disks, because I'm Me), and then modify the Flask app to turn that new computer-id "scancode" into the proper ASCII value.

I built a keyboard in modded Minecraft, then hooked it up through a webserver and a wireless microcontroller, so it appears as a USB keyboard on a different computer. I then used it to post "Hello World!" to bluesky, from minecraft.
