Doctors can morally “lie” to insurance companies to get necessary medical care approved, yet they don’t, even though insurance companies can’t prove they lied since they have no medical training. Doctors are in on the scam that is western medicine. Insurance companies are scapegoats.

Scapegoats are a concept that eats my brain.

What if we were both sacrifices but only one of us would feel the blunt of the dagger. What if we walked down the same path but one of us was dead before arrival. What if they took the noose off your neck while you watched mine tighten. What if they set you free like it was some kind of mercy, like they weren’t giving your life up to the same cause—what if you ran, fast enough and far enough that you wouldn’t have to watch as the red of my heart stained the altar.

Like you wouldn’t wonder what makes one worthy of the dagger and one worthy of the field.

What if we both found a way to run. What if we both found a way to drive the blade between our eyes.

What if our gazes were soft and stupid to everyone except each other. What if we knew.

You know how people are united by their hatred against certain groups they use as scapegoats? I'm really tired of the groups being things like people who are transgender or black or Muslim

I think we're really limiting ourselves by using a subset of our own species. Fantasy worlds have good old interspecies bigotry and I say we get in on that

Here are my proposals for the new scapegoat:

Carp - they're extremely invasive and damage the environments they're in

Mosquitoes - hate them. Would probably go over well with the masses to blame them for our shortcomings

Beetles - pick a species! There's plenty to go around. Too many. Out of control

Goats - it's in the name

I've been reading some time travel AUs in the Star Wars prequel era recently, and having thoughts about optimism.

I find it really interesting when literally every character can be redeemed except that one character. Sith lords, war crimey generals, assassins, you name it. If you're not That One Guy (you know the guy), you will learn the error of your ways and rejoin the good guys (who will learn the error of some of their ways) and become one big happy family.

Now, a lot of this is down to the fact that George Lucas wrote the Sith Master as the metaphor/scapegoat of the setting. Everyone's greed and fear and corruption is fed and fed upon by the far reaching schemes of That One Guy.

But in the more optimistic side of fandom, that sometimes leads to the idea that if we kill That One Guy, then all the wicked problems of the setting will become solvable. Exorcise that central point of darkness, and everyone's greed and fear and corruption will no longer work their ways into humongous uncuttable webs of destruction and death.

Burn the witch.

That's not solving the problem. That's just wishing you had the right target.
