First update on the "Every Scooby Doo reviewed" project: I'm on day 4 and I've reviewed 5 episodes, with 3 on the docket for today! So far I've done:

What's New, Scooby Doo? Season 1 Episode 1: No Creature like Snow Creature

Something I find quite interesting (and refreshing) is how while it may not seem that way, each show is a different flavor of the same pie. Guess Who is trying to balance comedy with mystery and characterization, but often focuses more on the guest (though it worked in this episode); Pup does the same but for younger viewers and is far more successful because it's all toned up to 11; What's New takes the classic formula and probably is the best at taking itself seriously while still having fun (everyone felt fleshed out, it was great); snd Scrappy is God's anus (fr, he's already being pushed SO HARD). It's fun to see different takes of the same concept of fun mysteries with characters you like!

For today's trio of eps I have some real throwback stuff: the first episodes of Laff a Lympics (a barely counts sports parody, not gonna be the deepest reviewed in the vid), 13 Ghosts (very interesting premise but we'll see if it's executed well) and the episode that started it all, the first of Where are you! More thoughts to follow, asks are welcome!

Synopsis:

The show is a spoof of the Olympics and the ABC primetime series Battle of the Network Stars, which debuted one year earlier. It featured 45 Hanna-Barbera characters organized into teams (the Scooby Doobies, the Yogi Yahooeys, and the Really Rottens) which competed each week for gold, silver, and bronze medals. In each episode, the Really Rottens would try in each event to cheat only to get caught by Snagglepuss each time.

The "Scooby Doobies" included characters from Scooby-Doo, Where Are You!, Captain Caveman and the Teen Angels, Speed Buggy and Dynomutt, Dog Wonder; the "Yogi Yahooeys" had characters from The Yogi Bear Show, The Huckleberry Hound Show and The Quick Draw McGraw Show. The only original characters were some members of the Really Rottens.

The sporting competitions in which the characters are called upon to compete are often comical or offbeat versions of Olympic sports, races, or scavenger hunts. Each segment is set in a different location around the world.

Episodes are presented in a format similar to an Olympic television broadcast, with an unseen announcer. Hosting duties and commentary are provided by Snagglepuss and Mildew Wolf.

My Rating: 9/10

My Reasoning: I personally really enjoy this show. However, I must admit that I have to dock it just a little bit because there is not like actual plot or anything going on. It's still very fun and entertaining. I really think it was a unique idea for its time. I also really love seeing all my favorite Hanna Barbera characters in one show. It's fun to see them interact with each other.

Yogi Bear remains one of the utmost successful star characters to have been created by Hanna-Barbera. He began his backing segment on The Huckleberry Hound Show in 1958. By 1961, he was headlining his own series, The Yogi Bear Show, with the supporting segments Snagglepuss and Yakky Doodle.

  Yogi Bear lived in Jellystone National Park, and his antics made park rangers question their career choice. For his part, Yogi suffered mainly from boredom, hunger and hunters. He spent much of his time conning campers out their "pic-a-nic" baskets or swiping unguarded goodies. He sometimes had to contend with hunters who were either after him or other woodland creatures, whim he tried to protect. When faced with opposition Yogi often proclaimed himself to be "smarter than the av-er-age bear" although in general his boast turned out to be overly optimistic. On occasions Yogi even attempted to escape the confines of the park and the repetition of his daily routine, only to find that life inside the park was comparatively soft and easy to the unprotected habitat outside its boundaries.

  Of the park rangers who were faced with a never-ending struggle to curb Yogi's shenanigans and uphold park policy, Yogi's chief nemesis Ranger Smith became the only ranger throughout the series to be developed as a character. Yogi's ally and and frequent companion was a small, bow tie wearing bear name Boo Boo. Where Yogi was rash, Boo Boo was the voice of reason, attempting to curb Yogi's impulsive habits.

  Yogi was too big a star to let fall into obscurity once own series ran its course, so for several decades he served as the front man for numerous Hanna-Barbera cartoons that brought together large casts of characters who formerly had their own series. In addition to numerous specials, Yogi starred in Yogi's Gang (1973), Yogis' Space Race (1978) and its spin-off series Galaxy Goof-Ups (also 1978), Yogi's Treasure Hunt (1985), The New Yogi Bear Show (1988) and Yo Yogi! (1991). He was also team leader of the Yogi Yahooeys in the 1977 series, Scooby's All Star Laff-A-Lympics.

That show about one of Scooby-Doo’s characters was so bad that it inspired me to go back and watch every single Scooby-Doo series in order. I’m watching “Scooby-Doo, Where Are You?” and here’s the list of all shows so I can keep track of things.

There are few modern (post-WW2) cartoon characters with the longevity of Scooby Doo. For whatever reason, people still love the cowardly dog with the endless appetite (exactly what were in those Scooby Snacks that he and Shaggy consumed has been the source of debate for decades) over 50 years after his debut.

In fact, there are still new episodes featuring Scooby and the gang being created to this day! These I won’t be covering. I will be covering the Scooby Gang (or “Mystery Inc.” as the various Scooby Doo comics (and later series/adaptations) called them) until 1985 (as that’s when the franchise hit a point so low I gave up. More on that later)

First, let’s meet the original gang, starting with...

...Fred (in the early series, none of the gang had last names, so I won’t be adding them here) If anyone could be called the “leader” of the group, it would be him. He is usually the one who keeps the coolest head and comes up with the plan to end the episode. When the gang inevitably splits up, he usually teams up with...

...Daphne (who has the nickname “Danger-prone Daphne” due to the fact that she’s a bit accident prone and usually falls into the path of whatever monster they’re trying to hide from/trap) and...

...Velma (In later series, Velma is more knowledgeable. In early seasons, she’s just the nerdy girl who’s always losing her glasses)

Which leaves the other team as...

...Shaggy (voiced by the legendary host of American Top 40, Casey Kasem) and Scooby Doo. Both are pretty much scared of their own shadow (so why do they always get roped into chasing ghosts?!), though find their bravery when bribed with edibles Scooby Snacks (given their propensity for eating anything not nailed down, you know they gotta be high on something)

Scooby and the gang debuted in 1969 on CBS with...

The plots were fairly standard. The gang hears about a monster in the area by some of the locals, does some investigating, gets chased by the monster to some generic 60s bubblegum pop until they somehow manage to capture the monster, who inevitably is one of the locals, then the gang bullshits the big criminal plot the local had hatched using the monster disguise to frighten anyone snooping around...

Scooby Doo Where Are You! lasted 2 seasons, and was rerun on CBS until 1976, except for 1972-1973, where CBS aired a new Scooby Doo series...

...which featured the Scooby Gang teaming up with fictional characters (such as Batman, and the Addams Family) and animated versions of real-life celebrities (such as the Three Stooges and the Harlem Globetrotters) to solve mysteries.

In 1976, ABC acquired the rights to air Scooby Doo (and would keep them until after the scope of this review) In addition to making Scooby a team captain in Laff-A-Lympics, Scooby starred in a new series (titled The Scooby Doo Show), which featured a new member of the Gang...

...Scooby’s cousin, Scooby Dum (who...let’s be honest...sounded like Bubba J, but less alcoholic)

Scooby Dum lived up to his name, rarely adding much to the show except for “wow, he’s stupid!” gags (when the Headless Horseman came looking for a new head, Scooby Dum tried to pull his own head off to give to the Horseman)

The Scooby Doo Show, as well as reruns of Scooby Doo Where Are You! (it’s almost like the producers knew which series was actually any good), ran until 1979, when we saw what would be the start of a downward spiral in terms of quality...

Which, as you can guess from the title, saw another member of Scooby’s family. Gone was Scooby Dum, to be replaced by Scooby’s nephew...

...Scrappy Doo, who was the exact opposite of Scooby. Scrappy was bound and determined to beat up every ghost and monster he came across, and despite all evidence to the contrary he believed “Uncle Scooby” was as fearless as he was.

I’m just gonna come out and say it: I can’t stand Scrappy. He was the epitome of “little dog syndrome”. I know he was introduced in an attempt to fix sagging ratings, but there had to be a better way! And I know I’m not the only one who feels this way if the Scooby Doo movie is any indication.

Scrappy would stay with the Gang until 1985. However, the rest of the Gang became sick of Scrappy by 1980 as Fred, Daphne, and Velma left the show. Additionally, instead of a half-hour mystery, Scooby, Shaggy, and Scrappy did 10-minute shorts that usually revolved around Scooby and Shaggy trying to run away from a random ghost/monster (an actual one, as opposed to a crook in a Halloween costume), despite Scrappy’s best efforts.

This formula would continue until 1985, when Shaggy somehow managed to convince Daphne to come back. However, this would mark the point where the writers had obviously given up, as they gave us...

Yes, that’s legendary horror movie actor Vincent Price seeing his talent wasted on this. As the intro stated, Scooby and Shaggy get tricked into opening the Chest of Demons, which houses 13 of the most evil ghosts that ever existed. Because they released the ghosts, it’s up to them to re-capture them.

“Assisting” Scooby, Shaggy, Daphne, and Scrappy in this venture is...

...Flim-Flam, a pint-sized con man boy who is somehow even more annoying than Scrappy.

Guiding them in their quest is...

...Vincent Van Ghoul (voiced by Price, who tried his best to salvage this train wreck)

The series was so bad that even Scooby Doo quit! Seriously, there was an episode that broke the fourth wall in which Scooby quit the show and they needed to cast a new dog to play him.

The series lasted 13 episodes. You’d think it would be appropriate as there were 13 ghosts, but the first episode was just the set-up, meaning the series ended with one ghost still out there. Great job, guys!

After that debacle, ABC tried one last time, taking the Muppet Babies approach...

...in which we see the adventures of the Scooby Gang as kids.

[However, I had given up on Scooby Doo by this time, so have never seen it. At least Scrappy was out of the gang]
