55 years ago today, January 4, 1969, the final new episode of Wacky Races aired. It is an American animated television series produced by Hanna-Barbera Productions for Saturday mornings. The series features 11 different cars racing against each other in various road rallies throughout North America, with all of the drivers hoping to win the title of the "World's Wackiest Racer". The show was inspired by the 1965 comedy film The Great Race.

The cartoon had many regular characters, with 23 people and animals spread among the 11 race cars. Wacky Races ran Saturday mornings on CBS from September 14, 1968, to January 4, 1969, and in syndication from 1976 to 1982. Seventeen 20-minute episodes were produced, with each of them featuring two 10-minute segments.

The series spawned numerous spin-offs throughout the years featuring Dick Dastardly, the most similar in theme being "Fender Bender 500" in 1990.

In 2017, the series was remade as a reboot, airing on Boomerang. It aired only once on Cartoon Network on August 13, 2018.

Richard Milhous ‘Dick’ Dastardly and Max ‘Red Max’ Richthofen

Two WWI army vets who served together in the Deutsche Luftstreitkräfte and after the war ended up in America in hopes of starting anew, only to end up working as bootleggers and taking part in illegal races. Both of them are hired by Sylvester Sneekly and are actually proving their worth with Max winning the first race (only, because his boyfriend let him, we all saw See-Saw to Arkansas, right??). Too bad it also got him a bullet in the gut after boasting his victory to the wrong person. He’s gonna be fine tho, don’t worry. He’s a soldier he can walk it off.

Freddy 'Lil Gruesome' Loran

What if Gyp Rosetti was played by Peter Lorre? Well, that’s how you get Lil’ Gruesome in the Boardwalk AU. Just as insane and a sore loser, who is absolutely not taking that second place too well (again, canon, as the Creepy Coupe came in second place, twice in a row actually, which is great because it lines up well for the AU). Currently pending who he works for (if we can’t come up with anything better I will make him work for Dr. Bigot as a joke, and yes, that’s a real HB character lol), but in any case he starts a turf war first.

Penelope Pitstop and Sylvester Sneekly

Penelope took a sip of the Maggie DuBois The Great Race emancipated women’s juice and is now a suffragette, who will stop at nothing to prove that women can be anything if they want to be, even bootleggers. After her dad gets taken out, she becomes the heiress to the Pitstop fortune and will use it how she pleases, and will take part in the races, much to the charging of her guardian Sylvester Sneekly, who has to put up with the insane Florida woman shenanigans (yes, she’s from Florida, which explains a lot lol). Man is very close to snapping, but for now he will try to keep his cool until he can figure out a way to get his hands on the Pitstop money.

I’m rewatching Wacky Races for Nostalgia Reasons, @faustiandevil reasons, and because I had an idea of a Boardwalk Empire-style alternate universe where the Wacky Races are mostly moonshiners and mob bosses holding illegal and rigged races with souped up cars à la NASCAR. Dick Dastardly and the Red Max are from Europe and completely unprepared for the US racing scene. I came up with the idea because the Ant Hill Mob has a blatant Edward G Robinson caricature, and the Arkansas Chuggabug look like moonshiners

Starting with the first doodle, from left to right: Pat Pending (mechanic in racing and distilling alcohol), Rufus Buzzcut (moonshiner logger), Peter Perfect (old money spoilt rich kid, the old money comes from his old man's illegal activities), Dick Dastardly (British WW1 ace pilot vet, out of his element), Red Max (Bavarian WW1 ace pilot vet, also out of his element), Lazy Luke (moonshiner) and his pet Blubber Bear (bear), Little Gruesome (originally a cross between a Peter Lorre and a Bela Lugosi parody, now condensed into a Peter Lorre character: prohibition era gangster with a morbid sense of humour), Penelope Pitstop (mob gall from down south), and finally Clyde (originally an Edward G Robinson parody, now also a prohibition era gangster) and Ring-a-Ding (gangster stooge) from the Ant Hill Mob

Profiles in Villainy 

Dick Dastardly & Muttley

A cheat, scoundrel and all around full fledge fink , Richard ‘Dick’ Dastardly is completely without scruples and has found himself on the wrong end of conflicts all over the world.  Accompanied by his snickering sidekick, Muttley, Dastardly was an airman for the villainous Vulture Squadron during the Second World War.  Herein Dastardly was assigned to hunt down and eliminate the intrepid carrier pigeon known as Yankee Doodle Pigeon.

Dastardly devised all many of diabolical schemes to do away with the pigeon.  Thankfully Yankee Doodle was always able to stay a step ahead and successfully deliver crucial messages to the Allied Forces.

Following the war, Dastardly and Muttley became celebrated race car drivers and competed in the Wacky Races.  The two regularly cheated and attempted to sabotage the other contestants of the races.  The pair’s various schemes almost always backfired due to incompetence or dumb-luck.  Although it was most often Dastardly’s buffoonery that caused their failures, he always managed to blame it on Mutley.  

As time went by, Mutley must have grown tired of Dastardly’s foolishness and abuse.  The two parted ways and Mutley would go on to have subsequent adventures where he acted in a much more heroic fashion.  

Dick Dastardly has a twin brother known as the Dread Pilot and Mutley also has a brother, named Mumbly.  Oddly enough, these two brothers teamed up as partners competing in the Laugh-a-Lympics, leading the villainous squad of athletes known as the Really Rottons. 

Actor Paul Winchell voiced Dastardly in his original appearances in Wacky Races, with actors Michael Bell, Rob Paulsen, Jim Cummings and Jason Isaacs voicing the villain in subsequent appearances.  While actor Don Messic voiced Mutley in Wacky Races; with actors Scott Innes and Billy West voicing the scamp in subsequent appearances.  

Dick Dastardly and Mutley first appeared in the debut episode of Wacky Races, airing on September 14th, 1968.

Wacky Races: A Tsuyoshi Takashiro Digital Film (Classic Mac, Future Pirates, 1997)

An FMV game based on the classic Hanna-Barbera show.

It's on IA here, but I can't get it to work for the life of me. Instead, download it from here and unzip it. Drag the .iso file onto the emulated desktop here once it's finished starting up. Then, before you double click the Wacky Races icon in the window that appears, click the second icon on the strip on the low left and select 640*480 on the menu.

Spoken dialog is in Japanese, so here's the skinny. Dick Dastardly plans to cause havoc in ten different lands. To get passes to those lands, watch RacesTV and bet on racers to win, two at a time. One of multiple CGI mini-episodes will play, with ten different possible winners - if either of your chosen racers won and you don't yet have their pass, you'll earn it. You can use the passes in Trip mode, a first-person point-and-click adventure game, to visit the ten lands in your very own wacky vehicle, the T-Bone Wrex (complete with manipulator arm for those pesky inventory item puzzles). The IA link has a scanned manual - you can run the images through Google Image's reverse image search and select the Translate mode.
