What Christmas traditions do you have on-site?

over a decade has passed and still no sound design in horror games has surpassed the cacophony of carnage that kicks off SCP: Containment Breach

(ignore the other alarm at the end, i don't know why that's there)

how do i love thee? let me count the ways.

-the whole ordeal opens immediately with an announcement stating that several entities have breached containment. assuming the player has gone through the intro, they will have just seen SCP-173 perform a hit and run. the announcement makes it clear that the peanut is not the only thing that's loose. everything is loose.

-the music is constant, but also very simple. it's essentially one note being held the whole time. it stops there from being gaps in the sound where the other sound effects aren't enough to maintain the intensity, but it also doesn't draw attention to itself.

-there is a very real sense of commotion outside the immediate area. sounds are muffled, distant, but distinct enough to communicate struggle.

-many of the game's antagonists have their own auditory language. if you've heard sound effects from this game, you probably recognize some of them within this intro. you have SCP-106 laughing as well as the bending of metal heard when he passes through walls. you have what may be the concrete sliding sound SCP-173 makes when he moves. you can very faintly hear screams that sound like SCP-096.

-there is a lot of screaming here. there is not a lot of screaming in the rest of the game. you don't know how big this facility is or how many people were in it to begin with, but you can tell from the contrast in volume that 90% of them died within the first minute of the breach. if you weren't already aware of the danger you're in, this will let you know. it is a miracle that you even survived the initial massacre.

-if you followed the reasonable instinct to haul ass as soon as alarms started blaring, then you will likely have walked into another cutscene with people talking while this is all going on, which of course is only going to further overwhelm you.

-50 seconds in, when you think things are finally calming down, you are slapped right across the face with a roar from SCP-682. this is the louder than anything else you have heard so far and it even makes the screen shake. the earlier sounds established themselves as being distant from the player, so now hearing something this clearly tells you that it is very loud and that its source is something very big. as if everything else wasn't already bad enough.

also want to mention the commotion ambience. these sound effects will play randomly during the game and everything i said about the intro also applies to them. and because i think it warrants repeating: i love how so many of the sound effects here are tied to specific SCPs. containment breach has all-around fantastic sound design.

Malleus doesn't believe he'll ever get used to the feeling of handling slimy fish.

Wrinkling his nose, he gives the salmon a dirty look before flinging the fish into the air, hurling it as far as he can. In a flash, there's a sudden burst of movement — a blurred figure leaping from the surface of the water, powerful crocodilian body allowing it to lunge upwards and grab the fish right in its human mouth.

The subject tumbles back into the water with a large splash, water flying everywhere. But that, Malleus is used to by now. He had to get used to it after the subject had dragged him into the water on his first day on its team, refusing to let go.

He watches as the subject — a hybrid with the head and torso of a human and the lower body of a crocodile — drags itself out of the water, giving him a pleading stare. It opens its mouth, warbles the same whine Malleus has grown to recognise — a peculiar nickname that it has assigned to him, one that sounds a little like Wakasama.

"Yes, yes, I am aware that you would like to have more," Malleus sighs. Reaching into the bucket at his side again, he flings another salmon into the air, watching the happy crocodilian boy go chasing after it, eyes fixated on the happy smile that graces its face as it tears into the fish with too-sharp teeth.

There's plenty of things that makes him recoil about being assigned to the Crocodile's team. The high death count, needing to interact with it every day, the fact that it has some level of obsessive separation anxiety from him — for what reason, Malleus still doesn't know.

And yet, Malleus cannot help but think that perhaps, after all this time, he has grown rather fond of it.

After all, he's taken to calling it by its name now. Sebek, a name that had taken multiple tries of hissing and growling for Malleus to understand, but a name that makes Sebek indescribably happy whenever Malleus uses it.

"Sebek," he calls out, reaching for another fish in the bucket.

And Sebek perks up, glancing over from the water, indescribably happy.

Really, Malleus can't help likening its behaviour to that of a clingy puppy when it acts like this.

So I beat the latest update in less than like, thirty minutes, on my third attempt just now.

God I hate weeping angel mechanics (SCP CB flashbacks...) but I got incredibly lucky and somehow managed to glitch that... Thing when it's first appearing by flashing it just as that new angler variant was introduced as well (I think)

And I beat the thing practically in easy mode after that, only those things you gotta flash with the beacon appeared to me.

Kinda funny.

Also does anyone else have that glitch where you can't read the documents in game? And you are kinda just, stuck looking at Sebastian the whole time???

I have no screen captures of that but low-key that's what it felt like haha
