"Prisoners Start "Hunger Strike"," Ottawa Journal. July 25, 1933. Page 1. --- Unstated Number of Kingston Penitentiary Inmates Refuse to Eat. ---- Canadian Press by Direct Wire. KINGSTON, Ont., July 25. - An unstated number of prisoners at the Kingston Penitentiary went on a "hunger strike" at breakfast time today. The prisoners affected were housed in what is known as the female prison.
A number of prisoners at Kingston Penitentiary refused breakfast today, but Warden W. B. Megloughlin said they all ate lunch.
The warden declined to say how many of the prisoners refused their breakfast but other sources said 34 participated in the gesture thought to be a protest against plan to put the convicts back to work at the end of the present series of trials of those implicated i in last year's riots.

"UP High Court Upholds Food Safety Standards: Sugandhit Supari Classified as Food Product Under FSSA, 2006"
The court held that "sugandhit supari" is classified as a food item under the Food Safety Standards Act, 2006, and not merely a tobacco product under the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act, 2003. The summoning order passed by Additional Session Judge Jhasi and the non-bailable warrant issued by Additional District Judge Jhasi were upheld. The application under Section 482 Cr.P.C. for quashing these orders was dismissed.

Jagdish Prasad & Another v. State of UP & Another
Crl. Misc. Case No.11772/2024
Before the High Court of Allahabad
Heard by Hon’ble Mr. Justice Arun Kumar Singh Deshwal J
Fact:
The applicants firm M/s Balaji Traders Orai was involved in the manufacturing and sale of a product named "sugandhit supari".
An inspection was conducted by the Food Security Officer on 20.02.2020 at the manufacturing unit of the firm.
During the inspection, 370 packets of "sugandhit supari" were found, four of which were purchased and sent for analysis.
The food analyst's report indicated that the product contained tobacco, was of substandard quality, and did not meet labeling requirements.
A complaint was filed, leading to the summoning of the applicants and the issuance of a non-bailable warrant.
Legal Issue
Whether "sugandhit supari" is classified as a tobacco product or a food item under the relevant laws.
Whether the proceedings under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006 (FSSA, 2006) are valid if "sugandhit supari" is a tobacco product.
Point of arguments
Applicant's argument
"Sugandhit supari" is a tobacco product, and thus proceedings under the FSSA, 2006 are erroneous.
The product should be regulated under the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act, 2003 (COTPA, 2003).
Even if considered a food item, the applicants hold a valid license, making the invocation of the FSSA, 2006 incorrect.
Opposite Party's Argument
"Sugandhit supari" is a food item and thus falls under the purview of the FSSA, 2006.The applicants failed to present a valid license at the time of inspection.
Court's Observation
The FSSA, 2006 regulates food items to ensure safety for human consumption, while the COTPA, 2003 focuses on regulating and controlling tobacco product.
It considered the inclusion of betel nut (supari) under the definition of food and primary food in the FSSA, 2006 and its standards under the Food Safety and Standards (Food Products Standards and Food Additives) Regulations, 2011.
Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006: Defines "food" as any substance intended for human consumption and includes primary food (Section 3(1)(j)). Betel nut falls under this category as it is a primary food product derived from agriculture.
COTPA, 2003: Regulates tobacco products listed in its schedule. Betel nut (supari) is not listed as a tobacco product under COTPA, 2003 unless it contains tobacco as an ingredient.

"Hunger Strike Over At 'Pen' Warden Announces," Kingston Whig-Standard. May 6, 1933. Page 3. ---- Convicts Were All Eating at Breakfast This Morning Officials State -Are Given Chance to Work and Exercise. --- Petering out almost as quickly as it started, the hunger strike among the convicts of the new female prison at the Kingston Penitentiary was announced by prison authorities to be over this morning. Warden W. B. Megloughlin, when spoken to by The Whig-Standard this morning, said that the convicts were all eating again and that the strike (if such it could be called) was apparently over. The warden did not take the strike very seriously and he said the punishment for those convicts who had broken the rules and regulations of the institution had not as yet been considered. "Last night there were only a few of the 'striking convicts who didn't care to eat their super," said the warden. "As usual, the trays were placed in their cells and if they didn't. eat, it was their own lookout. But this morning, the convicts were all apparently hungry and ready to take. their meal and say nothing. "Conditions are virtually normal," sald Warden Megloughlin. "Most of the convicts who remained in their cells on Thursday and Friday were. glad of the opportunity afforded them to work and take exercise today.

Writing Notes: Anxious Attachment Style
Common Anxious Thoughts, Emotions, and Reactions
THOUGHTS
Mind reading: "That’s it, I know s/he’s leaving me."
All-or-nothing thinking: "I’ve ruined everything, there’s nothing I can do to mend the situation."
"I’ll never find anyone else."
"I knew this was too good to last."
"I have to talk to or see him/her right now."
"S/he can’t treat me this way! I’ll show him/her!"
"S/he is so amazing, why would s/he want to be with me anyway?"
"I knew something would go wrong; nothing ever works out right for me."
"S/he’d better come crawling back to beg my forgiveness, otherwise s/he can forget about me forever."
"Maybe if I look drop-dead gorgeous or act seductive, things will work out."
Remembering all the good things your partner ever did and said after calming down from a fight.
Recalling only the bad things your partner has ever done when you’re fighting.

Attachment classifications come from watching babies’ behavior.
Below is a short description of how anxious attachment style is defined in children. Some of their responses can also be detected in adults who share the same attachment style.
This baby becomes extremely distressed when mommy leaves the room.
When her mother returns, she reacts ambivalently—she is happy to see her but angry at the same time.
She takes longer to calm down, and even when she does, it is only temporary.
A few seconds later, she’ll angrily push mommy away, wriggle down, and burst into tears again.
Where Do Attachments Styles Come From?
Initially it was assumed that adult attachment styles were primarily a product of your upbringing.
Thus, it was hypothesized that your current attachment style is determined by the way in which you were cared for as a baby:
If your parents were sensitive, available, and responsive, you should have a secure attachment style; if they were inconsistently responsive, you should develop an anxious attachment style; and if they were distant, rigid, and unresponsive, you should develop an avoidant attachment style.
Today, however, we know that attachment styles in adulthood are influenced by a variety of factors, one of which is the way our parents cared for us, but other factors also come into play, including our genes and life experiences.

Reuters published a heartbreaking article yesterday (March 19) about northern Gaza being officially on the verge of famine, with the the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) stating that it’s likely to hit anywhere between now and May at the latest. That’s less than two months from now. Israel responds to this by not only failing to acknowledge the starvation they have wrought altogether, but also by going so far as to state that Israel “not refused a single shipment of medical supplies.” Meanwhile, tent cities have become breeding grounds for diseases of all kinds, because there’s no longer any clean water available and people are forced to live in extremely crammed spaces. 90% of children under 5 in Gaza are now suffering various diseases. 90% of children. Let that sink in.

You probably heard about the "14,000 babies in 48 hours" thing, but the media is doing a shit job of explaining it clearly.
Here's a recap:
---
The Claim
On May 14, 2025, Tom Fletcher, United Nations Humanitarian Coordinator, claimed during an interview on BBC Radio 4 that "14,000 babies could die in the next 48 hours in Gaza" due to severe humanitarian conditions.
This is Tom Fletcher:
Tumblr media
The figure Fletcher gave was based on a "misinterpretation" of a report from the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC).
What the IPC had actually projected was that 14,100 children aged 6 months to 5 years in Gaza were projected to suffer severe acute malnutrition over the 12-month period between April 2025 and March 2026 - not that they were all babies, nor that they would die, let alone within 48 hours.
The malnutrition claim was spurious enough, but claiming 14,000 babies would die in 48 hours was batshit insane.
HOW BATSHIT WAS IT?
Totally, blatantly batshit.
Let's do some math.
14,000 deaths in 48 hours = 291 babies per hour, or nearly 5 babies every minute, around the clock, 24 hours/day.
This level of mass death in such a short timeframe is unheard of outside of a nuclear catastrophe or an active extermination campaign...and no such event was occurring.
You'd think an expert from the UN would know the basic demographics, right?
Gaza has a population of roughly 2.3 million.
About 15% of the population is under 5 years old, or roughly 345,000 children.
Of those, the number of infants (under 12 months) is far smaller - closer to 50,000-60,000.
If 14,000 infants were to die in 48 hours, that would be over 25% of all babies in Gaza. In two days.
No known famine, epidemic, or conflict has ever produced that kind of child mortality in such a short span.
Not even historical attrocities accomplished that death rate.
Anyone with a basic understanding of child mortality statistics, humanitarian logistics, historical precedent, or basic mental math should have been immediately skeptical. The number was a red flag on its face and the claim should have prompted instant demands for sources, verification, and context.
Nobody in the Western legacy media seems to have made such demands.
Beleiving this claim required ignoring basic demographics, suspending disbelief about death rates, and trusting emotionally explosive language over factual scrutiny.
That didn't stop Tom from saying it.
That didn't stop news outlets from reporting it.
That didn't stop people from believing it.
What were the consequences?
Since no correction came from the UN for more than a week and nobody in the media thought to do their jobs and question it, this false claim lived in the world for those 8 days.
The claim was cited in the UK House of Commons during debates on Gaza and humanitarian aid. Politicians referred to the figure as fact, influencing rhetoric and public policy discussions.
The emotional weight of the claim increased pressure on Western governments to take urgent action or adopt stronger positions regarding Israel's actions in Gaza.
The figure was emotionally powerful and l inflamed already-deranged pro-Palestinian camps.
I'd argue it helped fan the flames of anti-Israel sentiment and antisemitism.
The claim circulated widely on the 20th and 21st.
Direct causation between the climate created by this misinformation and the shooting in DC on the 21st is speculative, but I'm seeing a lot of speculation on that. Here's Hen Mazzig:
Tumblr media
Just days ago, the UN published a scandalous headline claiming that Israel would kill 14,000 babies in 48 hours. In reality, the report stated: "14,100 severe cases of malnutrition could occur over the next year among children under five, if aid doesn't reach them." See how one year becomes 48 hours? How potential illness becomes certain death? How children become babies? Which headline do you think the antisemitic shooter in Washington DC read, and remembered? Words matter. Blood libels have consequences. They led to the murder of Yaron Lischinsky and Sarah Milgrim.
May their memories forever be a blessing
Because the false UN claim remained uncorrected for over a week, many individuals and advocacy groups based their calls to action, posts, and even protests on a false premise - creating a widespread misunderstanding about the scale and urgency of the crisis.
Finally, today, May 22nd of 2025, more than a week later, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) is reported to have issued a clarification, stating the claim was a misreading of the IPC data. I can't find any evidence of it, but that's what's being reported.
Tom Fletcher has not issued an apology or public retraction for his statement. It seems there will be no consequences for his incompetence.
