There have been a lot of new people following my blog and it's been, probably years, since I've introduced myself. So, for new people, or people who have forgotten, here you are! My name is Amanda, I write under the penname Aileen Rowe. I'm a pansexual polyamorous spoonie, who lives to write. I write fantasy, sci-fi, and paranormal. I also play and DM D&D games. I mostly write books, or I do small online cooperative writing (aka roleplay). I'm considering trying my hand at screen writing and short stories, but being a chronic overwriter, I'm not sure if the latter will work out. I'm currently querying Thief Without Faith but a lot of the agents I had planned to send to are closed to queries till the first of the years, so I'm working on a few other WIPS and nitpicking typos and things in the Thief manuscript. Distraught, Brie attacks Prince, putting Brie and her group of hunters on the run. Breaking for what remains of the Olympic National Forest, the group puts plans in motion for survival and vengeance, determined not to let Prince enslave their settlement like she has so many others. The forest becomes their sanctuary and their battleground as they fight to save their people and their home.

Or do they? Below the surface of this ideal world lay the godless, a group of rebels who believe the gods are no omnipotent beings at all. They claim to have proof that the gods are simply overpowered mages and magic users who have found a way to use humanity to extend their lives.

The Gods of the Veil send their priestesses out to hunt anyone who would speak against their godhood and their rule. The godless know that the gods can tell when veil cutters remove or damage their god marks, putting them on a list to be hunted and brought to the gods for judgement. Bernie, a priestess of the veil, goes on a hunt for a godless, but it doesn’t go as planned and she is captured. With help of a family friend and teacher, Alys escapes south with little supplies or funds towards the capital to beseech the king for help taking her home back and avenging her family. Her plan doesn’t go as she expected when she meets the twins Gabrielle and Garrett. The pair convince her to come with them to resupply and prepare for the oncoming winter in Seanoren. Seanoren is hope to the temple of the Goddess Lyota, who is responsible for giving humans their gifts. Gaby and Garrett are destined for the temple to finish their training of their gifts. Most people are tested and trained in their gifts from a young age. Alys tested negative as a child, but surprises await her inside the temple. Surprises that will change her plans, her path, and her future as well as her friends.

Aaaaaah,anon, you have to know that when I received this I absolutely freaked out and Iliterally said aloud “DUDE, YES”, because hnfgndgf, it’s a wonderful scenario! 

It speaks alot of being domestic! A domestic life for Fleurentia. That’s so soft and peaceful.The two of them are very tragic characters, so to give them a domestic andtranquil life is one of my greatest weaknesses. It lets them be happy and calmfor once, and it feels soft, as if they don’t have to worry about the worldanymore. 

And thisscenario is awesome on its own because while it keeps the domestic and peacefulair, it still remains tragic, as both have already gone through part of theirtragedies; Ravus losing his arm, and Iggy losing his sight. 

Let’s seewhat I can do with this. I don’t have much experience with handicapped people,so I’m not sure I can come up with many scenarios, but here I go. 

I tried towrite a “let’s explain how this is a chill universe”, but nah man, let’s skipexplanations and just keep it there: it’s a chill universe where they had nomore duties or prophecies to follow, even though they (whether you want it dueto the canon story or for alternative universe reasons) lost the arm and sightrespectively.

Ravus andIggy have managed to get a house of their own.

It’s not anapartment, because they both really adore their personal space, and becausethey found that easier than living in a building shared with more people, beingtwo handicapped, and not that they can’t adapt or can’t find it easy, but ifthey could afford for the decent house where they get more comfort plus moreprivacy plus an easier lifestyle as handicapped, then why not?

Ignisdoesn’t have much time since his injury (a year, more or less), so he’s not theDaredevil we know he becomes at age 32. He still struggles for the simpletasks. On his own, that is.

Ravus isguiding him into his new lifestyle as best as he can.

Ravus alsois not used to not having two arms; after they found a way to remove the armwith no risks (the arm is what contained the Magitek that, when removed, wouldturn him into daemon), he too is struggling to adapt.

Ignis wasused to analyze every detail of every situation; now he can’t. Ravus was usedto have full control over everything; now, in a way, he can’t. So the two tryto complement each other as best as possible.

Let’sfollow them in a normal and wonderfully domestic day, shall we?

Why are youspying these men that’s a crime

Goodmorning, you wonderful men!

Youwouldn’t believe how oddly comfortable it is for Ravus to sleep now, actually?No left arm lets him sleep on his left side without getting his arm numb, orhaving his partner use it as a pillow until it turns to torture. Ravus now isable to lie on his left side and hug Iggy no troubles.

Unless he’ssleeping on the right side; it’s usually Iggy spooning him, then.

There’smany other ways as they sleep, that doesn’t matter, I just like thinking aboutit.

Iggy sleepson the left side of the bed; that way, Ravus has it easier to reach for thingson the right bedside table, and Ignis reaches for things on the left.

The lamp ison the right bedside; the clock, opposite to what we would think, is on theleft.

Ignis nowrelies heavily on listening; finding a clock and shutting the alarm off is notroubles.

Ravus isthe only who needs light in the early morning or night, so that’s where thelamp is.

Ignis is incharge of removing the bedsheets and throwing them onto the mattress; Ravus isin charge of accommodating them so they’re correctly placed.

Ravus isgetting better at doing it himself, but Ignis helps him unbutton his pajamashirts.

Ignis isgetting better at it, but Ravus is still there to help him with taking themorning shower; the floor gets slippery, so there’s the risk Ignis may fall.While he learns to do it himself, Ravus is there to make sure he doesn’t falland to hand him the things he needs.

So they shower together.

They have aspecific place for things so Ignis knows where they are and doesn’t have toblindly look for them; a place for his shampoo, one of the soap, which isusually in a shelf that has it for sure it won’t fall down (unless heaccidentally drops it), and another place for the sponge.

While hegets used, Ravus helps him tell him where the things are or, if he’s too lost,will guide him to reach them; Ravus also tells him when it’s enough shampoo, orwhen the sponge needs more soap. He’ll help clean Iggy in spots that keepshampoo or soap that he can’t see are still there.

It has goodsides; Ignis helps him clean his right arm mostly, sometimes his right side ingeneral. He’s also in charge of massaging Ravus’ head at times to spread andget rid of the shampoo; Ravus can do that on his own, but it’s helpful andcomfy and very nice, so he never complains.

They putthe towels in a hook right at a side of the tub/shower; that way any of themcan reach for them.

They have acurtain rather than a glass door, just in case there’s any little slip there’sless risk of breaking something or to get injured.

Ravus isfirst to exit, usually with a hand to the wall (now that he’s beginning to getused, remember), so to be extra sure he won’t fall; once outside, he helps Iggyout so he won’t slip.

Just likethe hair thing, Ravus can dry himself on his own, but Ignis sometimes helpsbecause it’s more comfy.

Now let’ssee these boys get dressed (no cameras, please)

Youwouldn’t believe it’s much easier to have both hands to put briefs and pantson, but it is.

Usually,Ravus makes sure which is the front, and Ignis helps him pull the underwear up.Ravus later adjusts it as he pleases, but Ignis is who puts it in its place.

Ravus helpsmake sure which is the front of Ignis’ underwear, but that’s it; the man willput them on himself.

Ignis willhelp pull Ravus’ pants up as well and button them, like his own (and like theunderwear, Ravus just makes sure they’re not inside-out and that the front isfacing the front).

Ravus hassome struggles choosing what to wear mostly, if buttons or non-buttoned pieces;on a side, many buttons is struggles, but not impossible, and put-on clothingis a bit messier. He still sticks to mostly buttoned stuff, though.

Ignis willhelp tie the loose sleeve; Ravus verbally guides him into the knot, unlessIgnis is struggling too much, then Ravus will get his hand close to guideIgnis’ into where to go so he can make a knot. They don’t stay tied after thefirst knot; they wash and iron clothing, so yep.

I mean, itcould stay tied while in the washer machine, but they prefer to untie it so itgets properly cleaned.

Ravus helpsmostly to check that Ignis’ top clothing is not inside-out and facingcorrectly; he also helps tell Ignis if he’s buttoning the wrong button in thewrong hole.

Ravus alsoadjusts Ignis’ collars (if the shirt has one), and if Ignis needs or wants it,Ravus will help him make sure that when Ignis tucks the bottom into his pantshe doesn’t miss a part by accident.

If any ofthem need, for whatever reason, to wear a tie…ohboy.

It was bigstruggles at first, but they’ve been learning and getting better at it.

Ravus triedon his own, but the struggle was stupid, so Ignis offered help.

Now, Ravusputs the tie in place, and Ignis ties it under Ravus’ guide and instructions.

Ignis tyinga tie is very slow and careful. Ravus doesn’t blame him. He doesn’t even mind.He even finds it moving.

Ravus makessure the socks match and Ignis puts them on. Ravus can put his own himself, butsometimes Ignis helps just for comfort, Ravus just adjusts them.

Ravus makessure Ignis puts on the right shoe on the right foot and such; Ignis ties bothhis and Ravus’ footwear if they need to be tied.

Ravus helpsIgnis comb his hair, but Ignis’ hands play a big role there, too.

Ignis likesbrushing Ravus’ hair, another thing that Ravus could make on his own but ismore comfy if Iggy does it.

It’s notdaily, of course, but Ravus is in charge of helping Ignis to shave.

Ravus,lacking a hand, also struggles with that, so rather than shaving Ignis, heguides Ignis into re-learn to do it; Ravus still forever guides him to makesure he doesn’t miss a spot and that stuff.

When theygrow older, Ignis even learns to shave Ravus.

Please,Ignis, he desperately needs to stay shaved.

Breakfast!Or any eating time.

Ravus isguiding Ignis into cooking.

If cuttinga vegetable or something, Ignis will hold an edge with a hand and the knifewith the other; Ravus, using his only arm/hand, will use it on top of Ignis’right one to guide it into decent slices, and so that he doesn’t cut himself.

That’spossibly their most usual treat; Ravus using his hand to guide Ignis’ intodoing the cooking right and not harm himself in the process at the same time.

Ignisserves the coffee and other liquids; Ravus tells him when to stop so the cupwon’t flood.

If the foodis something that needs to be cut (like meat), Ignis will cut the pieces for Ravus’dish. Like always,under Ravus’ verbal and sometimes physical guide.

You know what’s manageable but can betroubles? Jars and containers with screw lids. For Ravus, of course. Ignis isusually opening them.

Ignis is incharge of washing the dishes; Ravus is in charge of putting them in the dryingracks, and hand any that’s still dirty back. He’s also in charge of handingIggy some dishes if he misses them (it’s usually utensils).

Remember thatteeth care is important, people.

Ignis iswho puts the toothpaste on their brushes; Ravus verbally guides him.

Chores.

Ravus canand will clean windows.

Ignis is incharge of sweeping; Ravus guides him so he doesn’t miss a spot or hitsanything, and so he doesn’t misstep somewhere.

Thoughthey’re learning to do it, they have someone that comes a day a week to helpthem iron things; Ravus can see, but it gets a bit messy with only one arm;Ignis can use both hands, but can’t see what and how he’s ironing. It’s a bitcomplicated.

But they dofold their clothes. Like usual, Ravus makes sure they’re not inside-out, andIgnis folds it under Ravus’ instructions (though both are learning and gettingbetter at doing it alone).

You knowwhat Ravus has found sort of therapeutic after such a tragedy of a life and theloss of an arm? The garden. There’s something soothing about taking care offlowers. In some way, after being abused for so many years, taking care of alittle creature that’s not a human or a dog that needs much attention and carehe doesn’t feel prepared for, flowers are pretty.

He’s beenlearning to do a few gardening things on his own, mostly because it’s calmingrather than necessary. But you know, his hand gets awfully dirtied when heworks in his flowers.

Have youever tried to wash a hand without the other? As in wash it thoroughly?

Ravus atfirst was pretty embarrassed, mostly because he couldn’t believe he couldn’t dosuch a simple task on his own, but Ignis, like always, is too understanding andloving and now Ravus doesn’t mind asking him for help to wash his hand.

Ignis helpsclean it, and Ravus tells him when it’s clean enough.

Ravus iswho writes the notes they need to take.

Ravus alsowrites the e-mails they need to write, but they mostly stay away of e-mailingand texting; using one hand is not impossible, but it makes the task superdifficult. So if they want to communicate, they’ll mostly phone whoever theyneed to phone.

Ravus makessure Ignis’ phone is updated and charged; as side note, it works through voicerecognition for Iggy.

Ravus hasno troubles handling the TV remote; he usually puts musical channels on, forIggy, or sometimes describes him what’s going on if it’s necessary, but theybarely ever watch TV. They prefer a miiiiiillion times to put music on or to bein the quiet. They love the quiet.

When theygo out by feet, Ignis will grab Ravus’ arm.

They triedto keep Iggy on Ravus’ left side, which is the most vulnerable one, so in a waythey have a hand on the right and one on the left to not be off guard and tonot have a blind side.

Oh. Uhm. Nopun intended up there…sorry.

Turns outthey couldn’t; the blind side stays a blind side very literally, and Ignis hadnothing to grab other than Ravus’ clothes or shoulder, and it wasn’t working.

Besides,these boys learned that they have no more reasons to keep the guard up; they’reliving a normal life, not war any longer, so there’s no need to have thatmentality of “how do we work best as a team in case someone tries to kill us.”

So theyswitched to the logical; Ignis grabbing Ravus’ arm.

Ignis isstill using the cane, normally.

Eventuallyand as years go, he’ll learn to walk more confidently without the cane and onlyRavus by his side.

He’s alsolearning to go with cane and without Ravus.

Ravusdrives.

Ignisverbally guided him about some questions he had about Lucian driving rules andsuch (slightly different than Tenebraean’s), but Ignis already knew how todrive; he made sure to re-learn in low-risk places with one arm only.

As you cantell, their car is automatic.

Some yearsinto it, sometimes Ignis helps with the gear shift, as he’s got it memorized.Of course, under Ravus’ instructions.

They dohave their stamp that signals the car carries with and/or is driven by someonedisabled, but Ravus barely uses it to park in the signaled spots; he finds nosense on parking there when “I lack an arm while someone out there may lack aleg; they should have priority over the spots that are closer to the entrance”,and Ignis is in favor because he doesn’t mind walking longer distances (because“he’ll never re-learn the world if he never lives it like usual”).

They do,however, sometimes use it, mostly when they feel they need to or for comfort.

I mean,they do have the rights to do that.

Groceryshopping.

Ravus is incharge of writing the lists of what they need, just like any other kind ofnotes, but both usually go together. Ignis keeps company and guides the cartunder Ravus’ indications, and constantly does the math or remembers things theydidn’t list, and Ravus grabs the stuff.

Igniscarries the most bags into the car; Ravus makes sure to accommodate them in the trunk.

I like tothink they have a cat.

Ravus makessure to tell Iggy where the kitty is, just in case Ignis was about to sit onher or something.

Ignis, relyingon touch and sounds, adores petting the kitty; like Ravus started his flowercare, Ignis’ ‘haven’ is the kitty. She feels nice under the touch, is superaffectionate, and purrs.

Why did Iinclude that? Because it’s fluffy and I love Fleurentia domestic fluff.

You knowwhat’s the prettiest “helping each other with routine” that’s actually not ‘helping’and it’s not routine but shut up this is my post and I want fluff?

Reading.

The easiestway for Ravus to read is usually if the book is on a table, and he can keep thebook open with his one hand, but sometimes it gets kind of uncomfortable. Sothere’s Ignis to help.

Ignis willhold the book and turn the pages, and Ravus will read.

This oftenhappens in a way so Ravus is sat, usually against the bed’s headboard or an armof the couch, and Ignis sat in his lap, with the silver haired looking fromeither above his head or shoulder, depending on how Ignis is resting againsthim.

Thing is,Ravus is reading aloud, of course.

Ignis hasswitched to audiobooks while he learns braille, but Ravus can see and willread, and that’s how Ignis helps him while getting to bond over something atthe same time.

You shouldsee the scene that it makes; Ravus sat against the headboard, legs to the sidesso Ignis can sit in his lap, his one arm around the Lucian’s torso, Ignis’ head against the Tenebraean’s tummy rather thanhis chest, holding the book slightly up for Ravus to read aloud, and the kittycurled on the other side of the bed.

Theirroutine to finish the day is basically the same than that of waking up, except onreverse.

Ignisunbuttoning, helping with pants, Ravus making sure things are not inside-outand such, etc.

Once intheir pajamas, they go to bed together, which doesn’t need more science thanpulling blankets down.

Ravus mayread a little more for himself sometimes, then turn the light off, and snugglenext to Ignis.

This hasnothing to do with “helping each other with what they can’t” but it’s routine:

Ravus, punctualand every day like a clock, always give Ignis a kiss in the space between hiseyebrows to wish him goodnight, caressing his hair with his one hand.

Ignis, onhis own ritual of response, always kisses one or two of his own fingertips, andtouches Ravus’ lips with it, staying there a few seconds as if to feel them andmemorize them by touch.

“Goodnight,Ignis.”

“Sleep tight,Ravus.”

And the catcurls up at their feet.

  And that’sa usual day in the life of the Scientia & Nox Fleuret house.

My 2020 AO3 Unwrapped

Thanks for the tag, @tortoisesshells!! Let’s do a little damage report. All fics, unsurprisingly, for Mercy Street.

First funny thing: I did not remember at all that I had an 11 month writing hiatus from late March 2019 to late Feb 2020. And guess what brought me out of it? No, not COVID. No, not even the Mercy Street Renaissance that came along with it. Nope, it was this seemingly innocuous ask by @tortoisesshells that launched a borderline crackship nobody asked for :)

Total Word Count 2020: AO3 totals 107K, but that’s complete BS.

From solo works (10 fics) : 21,388 words, which totally jives with by batting average of 2K per fic (and, incidentally, also the distance I typically run before my brain starts playing “This is crap. Running sucks. Why am I even doing this? Why 3K more? This is crap.” on repeat.) 

From team works (2 fics): This is where it gets complicated. Let’s say about half of We Run a Very Tight Ship (so ~16K out of 32,232 word), and... oooooh boy.... hard to tell with A Mansion House Murder (54,107 words), as many chapters were co-written and/or cut & paste-scrapbook style with @broadwaybaggins‘s work... so let’s go for about 15K?

Grand total: ~52K (with a ± 10% margin of error). No way close to what all you fine folks did, but still 4x my 2019 outpout of a meazly 12.5K, and my best year since joining in 2017 by a good 20K. So yay!

Top 5 By Word Count:

A Mansion House Murder (15K / 54K - and that’s not even counting all the related fics/ background stories / cut scenes that got posted individually. We really ought to make a Director’s Cut of the whole thing!)

Top Fic Overall:

Well, depends based on what.

Time spent: It has to be A Mansion House Murder. I joined this team effort with @mercurygray, @jomiddlemarch, @tortoisesshells , @broadwaybaggins and @fericita-s and was happy to go with the flow wherever it may lead. As we had not agreed to a set endpoint from the get go, it was such fun to read what each super talented writer added and see what could be a potential clue, and discuss the chapters in a dazzling cascade of essay-worthy comments. @broadwaybaggins, @fericita-s and I tackled the final 2-3 chapters (which eventually turned to 12-13 because they ended up being much longer than anticipated and would’ve thrown off the full story’s rhythm) and it was a whole different type of challenge to see how to tie everything together and try and provide a satisfying ending. Most fun: I’m gonna go with Cruise Ship because co-writing with @jomiddlemarch in a modern, boozed up AU with my everyday sailor-level language is always a fucking blast. I also had tons of fun in @broadwaybaggins‘s Summer Camp AU sandbox with Pony Up and getting these crazy kids drunk enough on vodka & Sunny D for some Never Have I Ever and Magic Miking by the campfire.

Personnal: I’m gonna shout out An Excess of Black Bile because it did not make any of the lists and was written from a darker personnal perspective, resulting in something quite different to my typical writing style. 

Adoro Te Devote was incredibly self-indulgent as it allowed me to create my first OC, write in French AND have some sexy Phoster banter; last week, I came up too late with ideas for a Christmas sequel, so.. maybe next year. 

And of course, I can’t not mention all the time and effort spent with Haliza, which I’m well aware is not everyone’s cup of tea (or, in this particular ship’s case, wine, sherry, whisky, brandy, port...) but to those of you who did find it enjoyable and encouraged me to continue down that very unexpected road, many thanks and cheers!

Thanks for the many questions, Socks! Sorry I didn’t answer them earlier; I decided answering asks on mobile sucks.  ALSO, this is going to be super long haha sorry.  1.  Tell us about your current project(s)  – what’s it about, how’s progress, what do you love most about it?       Well, my most current project is one I just started brainstorming. It’s (hopefully gonna be) a Fallout 3 series, with my latest fic being the starting point. LW/Fawkes is a ship I liked immediately when I played the series some years ago, but I never got around to writing for it, probably in part because there’s already a super good longfic about them, and I just didn’t think there was much else I could say. But my LW is different from Choco’s LW, and lately I wanted to start something self-indulgent. Although I have enough ideas for this to maybe be a single 30k fic, I’m choosing to do a series of shortfics instead, so that I’m not burdening myself with another long project. Fic series are great in that way, because it’s basically complete with every new fic.       On top of that, I have... probably 3 other things I want to make significant progress on this year. First is another Fallout fic: Same Heart. I’ve posted 8 chapters already and have almost 2 more done, but due to the slow-build nature of it (and my tagging) I don’t expect to have almost any readers until at least chapter 10 (when the ship characters finally meet). I’d like to at least get that far this year.       A project I’d love to finish by fall is the unreleased “The Wilderness”, a Venom zombie AU that I started for NaNoWriMo 2 years ago. It’s about 55% written, and my goal is to have as much of it done as possible before the sequel movie comes out. If it’s not done by then, I still plan to post whatever I have.       And lastly-ish, my novel... thing. Rogue. I’m in the process of editing it, although I’ve taken kind of a break lately. And as soon as I’m done with the edits and can get a couple of people to read it (just so they can tell me if certain parts are stupid and need changed) I plan to start the next book in the series... which will probably end up being book #1, actually, if I do them modern-era chronologically. It’s... gonna be a process. ^^;  2.  Tell us about what you’re most looking forward to writing – in your current project, or a future project.       In my upcoming FO3 fic series, I’m honestly just kind of weirdly looking forward to... how do I put this? Exploring my own vaguely-traumatic experiences through fic. I’ll always do a happy ending, if possible, but before we get there I really want to run these two through the ringer of... being given something they were led to believe was impossible, being judged for it, having it taken away, and then being told “well maybe it’s for the best”.       When it comes to future projects, I guess I’m really excited about writing the new Rogue book. “Reaper”, I guess, is its unimaginative working title. I’m anxious about it, because I thought Rogue had some really deeply emotional scenes, and I’m not sure if I’m going to be able to accomplish that as well with this new one, simply because the characters don’t have the same level of desperation about each other. I need to figure out what’s unique about their dynamic and push that. I guess I’m looking forward to the challenge.  3.  What is that one scene that you’ve always wanted to write but can’t be arsed to write all of the set-up and context it would need? (consider this permission to write it and/or share it anyway)       Hmm gosh. Technically there’s a scene in the later chapters of Mobius that I already wrote, but it wouldn’t take place until probably chapter 3 or later, and I just lost all steam on that fic, sadly. But every time I poke through my notes I make myself cry reading it. It’s a scene where one character knows it’s going to be the last time he sees the person he loves most, and he can’t explain his pain to anyone. I really just want to get there so I can see if it makes other people cry like babies haha.       But on a completely unrelated note, there’s also this ZADR fic I started writing in like 2009, and I absolutely didn’t want to do the work to get to the fun middle scenes, but basically it was an AU where young adult Dib went to live/work in the thriving multi-species space community, where he’s... I dunno, studying alien biology I think?, and he ends up with Zim as a roommate. The scenes I really wanted to write were about the two of them getting into like a bar fight with some tough types, and Zim gets his pak ripped off/damaged in the process, and Dib has to sort of take care of him through a horrible fever. But then it turns out that the pak was not a life-support system like they thought, but actually a growth inhibitor so they (the people in charge of the Irkens) could choose who became the Tallest (the leaders). (And also it hindered reproduction, etc.) So basically the two of them accidentally start to unravel a galactic conspiracy which also involves corruption in the Earth government, etc, and Zim gets taller but spoiler alert, he still doesn’t get tall enough to challenge the Tallest lol. Sadly, I doubt I’ll ever actually write that fic. Sounds like too much effort lol.  7.  What do you think are the characteristics of your personal writing style? Would others agree?       That’s such a hard question. Ummm. How do I put any of that into words? ...I think one of the things about my writing is that a lot of the time nothing really happens in a scene, and the story mostly focuses on a character thinking. Like, enough happens so there’s something for them to think about, but I think I tend to put a lot of emphasis on POV character’s thoughts, to the point of sometimes seeming stream-of-consciousness. I’ve been told that this makes my stories feel alive though? So I think it appeals to some people, though I’m sure others would find such stories boring.       Oh also, somewhat along these lines, I like to add commentary that is only somewhat relevant, usually in parenthesis at the end of a sentence or paragraph. (Honestly, it’s not unusual to see one in every paragraph if I’m writing something slightly humorous.)  9.  Are you more of a drabble or a longfic kind of writer? Pantser or plotter? Do you wish you were the other?      I would LOVE to write primarily longfics! However, I just don’t have the time or energy for it, and I don’t write fast enough. So I end up with a lot of oneshots under 10k. I had to challenge myself to learn to write short things though, and then it’s really about writing something short, not about writing a specific story.       Generally, I’m both pantster and plotter. I tend to write the first chapter/few scenes/maybe as much as 10k, just by the seat of my pants. After that, I look at what I’ve got and write out a plot to continue from there. Plotting everything out before I start just doesn’t work for me, but if I try “pantsing” anything longer than 15k I know I’m gonna have an absolute torturous hell of a time.  13.  Do you share your writing online? (Drop a link!) Do you have projects you’ve kept just for yourself?      Lol I think anyone who’s reading this knows I share my stuff online. Primarily on my AO3, though there’s some other stuff floating around here on tumblr too.  Most of the time if I keep something to myself it’s only because it’s not finish enough to share. So, sure, there’s plenty of that, but the goal is always to share it eventually. If I ever get around to finishing a novel, those will probably be the only things I don’t just post online. (Though I do post most of my OC stuff currently.)  17.  Do you think readers perceive your work - or you - differently to you? What do you think would surprise your readers about your writing or your motivations?       I think that inevitably my readers will always perceive me and my writing a bit differently than I do. That’s just... interacting with people. Nobody knows you entirely. However, I am as open and honest in my writing as possible, and I actually think that reading my fic is the best way to get to know me. I like to hope that I am an open book to anyone who has read many of my words. =] While you may not know the details of my life, I think you would have a good insight into my personality.    23.  What’s the story idea you’ve had in your head for the longest?       Like... my oldest fic/story that I’ve never written or posted? Not counting stuff I’ve consciously abandoned (things from middle school, mostly), my original fic series, “Damsel and Company in Distress” aka DamselCo. is definitely my oldest story. I think I started fiddling with it in 2006-- which makes it pretty disappointing that it’s gotten next to nowhere. XD; But the story is my baby, and it’s been my baby for so long that anyone who’s followed me ever is probably at least vaguely familiar with a few of the characters.  Now maybe one day I’ll actually give it the attention it deserves, though I’m sure it’ll need significant revamping. After all, a lot has changed in 14+ years. Ideas that were new and subversive then are probably already stale.

Mikey and Gerard are the last remaining crew of a legendary "ghost" ship, the Ravenkroft, which has been lost for the fifty years since the War that Broke the Stations. They've been avoiding inhabited space due to emotional scarring from the loss of their crew, and a feeling of isolation due to the fact that they are in fact cyborgs. They pick up Ray and Frank's escape pod, and promise to help them. In the process, old feeling of guilt are assuaged, new emotional ties are wrought, and the legendary ship comes home.

Define Mate by gala_apples, 10k, Mature. Love is complicated. You can love your grandfather while not wanting to clean up after the remnants of his life. You can love your boyfriend while not being able to forgive him. And you can love yourself while wishing that you didn’t have so many fucking emotions. When Ray is given the opportunity to make his mental state simpler, more primal, less conflicted, he takes it.

Before this Damage by yekoc, 10k, Explicit. The car’s the exact color of the earth, brown-roasted nothing, dust, and Jet Star dropped it a fucking mile and a half down the road, in the shaded dip behind a half-assed hill. Mikey’s sweating by the time they reach it, bandanna soaked through, and he whips it off and ties it around his forehead to keep the drops out of his eyes. In which Mikey goes looking for the rest of the Killjoys along with Ray, who isn't one of them.

1. Fic you spent the most time on: Ummm probably Rules of Architecture. Because I just so badly wanted to get everything right that I kept rewriting whole sections over and over again. That or People Who Move The World, which is a biggie.

2. Fic you spent the least time on: raging in a dying ember. I am, generally, not a drabble writer, since I get too attached to ideas to let them be that small lol but this fic is only 669 words about grief and anger and having someone to sit by your side.

3. Longest fic: People Who Move the World, which is as of now at 94k. Abandoned, sadly, but I’m hoping to go back to it! I really love the world I set up in it, so it would be great for inspiration to strike.

4. Shortest fic: As mentioned before, raging in a dying ember, with a whopping 669 words. But my shortest fic-fic is (that moment when) A Supehero Replies to You, which I think is hysterical and only has 1,041 words

5. Most hits: The Source of Grief, with almost 15k hits

6. Most kudos: The Source of Grief with 2,274. It’s kinda funny; I only have 9 Harry Potter fics versus 43 for DCU and 21 for Marvel, and yet my most loved fic is a harry potter one. Now in my top 5 of kudos there are 3 DCU and 1 Marvel but still.

7. Most comment threads: (No) Places of Safety with 199, followed by Rules of Architecture with 129. Considering those are both ongoing stories, I imagine (I hope, lol) those numbers will go up. 

8. Fav fic you wrote: Ahhhhh it’s like asking a parent to choose a favorite child. Like, I like different fics for different reasons! Can I give a top 5? Yea, I’m gonna. In no particular order: Rules of Architecture, In the Game, How Arbitrary Fate Is, One of the Legion Lost, A Current of Fate, Three Little Birds Sat On My Window. (I hope y’all know I angsted over picking these)

Fic you want to rewrite/expand on: I’ve got a few (see: many) multi-chapter fics that I really have to get back to lol, but separate from that I really want to write more for How Arbitrary Fate Is! I really love that AU and I have everything that happens next in the series planned out, I’ve just never gotten to it. That’s on my list for sure, and maybe expanding on the world of Three Little Birds.

10. Share a bit of your WIP or share a story idea that you’re planning: Imma be honest, I have way too many WIPs right now/fics in the works. It’s...a problem. But how about I share a snippet from a future chapter of (No) Places of Safety?

If you want to read all my stories in a binge then please be my guest, and I hope you enjoy all of them to your hearts desire, but please don’t feel any responsibility to comment on every single one. Of course I absolutely adore every single comment I’ve ever gotten, and I’ll appreciate every comment you might end up leaving, but I know sometimes it’s difficult to articulate how a fic made you feel. If you leave comments, I fucking worship you, but I’ll be just as happy if you simply enjoy my work.

Don’t ever be afraid to send me messages, and if it makes you feel more comfortable I’m totally fine if you just want to ask me questions through anon. I know sometimes reaching out to people you admire can be super scary, but I definitely encourage you to contact me at least through anon, which would be a lot less intimidating. His seventeenth Christmas at The Burrow, however, proves a better teacher and motivator than Slughorn or his father ever were, as a dear friend becomes ill, where the only method of healing and relief is through the brewing of a special tonic. 1) is there a story you’re holding off on writing for some reason?

A lot of my deadfics end up stalling out over research roadblocks. I’ll flub my way through one scene with the intent to come back after I’ve done my Google-fu, and then another, and another, aaaaand that’s now too much work. 

2) what work of yours, if any, are you the most embarrassed about existing?

A JTHM fic I wrote in high school that ended up deadfic because I ran off to BMT. It was well-received at the time but looking at it now? It’s just so ow, the edge. I’ve low-key considered tearing it down and rewriting it, but it’s been ten years and I can’t even recall where I was going with it. 

3) what order do you write in? front of book to back? chronological? favorite scenes first? something else?

90% chronological with a lot of snippets for later scenes piled haphazardly at the end of every Gdoc. of all the things that might have been was the big exception. There’s 28k posted and another 50k trapped behind a heap of writer’s block. :C

4) favorite character you’ve written?

5) character you were most surprised to end up writing?

Winry Rockbell. Not my usual character type to write by far, but she was just as surprisingly fun to write.

A ton of older fic on AO3 has a lot of weird formatting and grammatical errors. I think it’d be easy to get hung up over changes I’d want to make to various giftfics I’ve written over the years as well.

I can count on one hand the number of real life people who know I write and have fingers left over. I hate talking about my writing face-to-face. 

8) favorite genre to write?

Mmm, suspense/horror? Whatever you call ‘presenting a problem to a character that gets insurmountably worse, and also it would be justified if the character just huddled screaming under a blanket instead of confronting it.’

9) what, if anything, do you do for inspiration?

Read other fics that handle similar topics/ideas. Look through the literal GBs of refs I’ve got saved. Get out of the house and do something even a little bit out of my norm. Get lost on Wikipedia.

10) write in silence or with background noise? with people or alone?

Music always, rarely near people.

11) what aspect of your writing do you think has most improved since you started writing?

Man, I’ve been writing and posting fics for 15 years now. I have to hope every aspect has improved since I was friggin’ 12 years old writing garbo Mary Sues.

12) your weaknesses as an author?

I can’t concentrate on anything long enough to finish it. More fic ideas than I’ll ever have the energy to commit too. Run-on sentences. I don’t write women almost at all. COMMAS. 

13) your strengths as an author?

I feeeeel like I do a good job of getting the reader into the character’s headspace? I adore limited narrative so when I write a fic I try to commit to that character’s style and personality. I also think I do horror/suspense decently.

15) why did you start writing?

11 year old Lorelei found ffn and went, “Oh shit, this is a thing? Sign me up.”

16) are there any characters who haunt you?

...I’m not sure what this means? 

17) if you could give your fledgling author self any advice, what would it be?

It’s okay to write positive endings, edgelord. Sometimes less is more. Sometimes more is good too, but damn girl, tread carefully. 

18) were there any works you read that affected you so much that it influenced your writing style? what were they?

These seems like a dangerous rabbit hole to fall down, so I’ll just link the most recent fic whose style and impact left me speechless the first time I read it (and envious, and determined, and more than happy to read it three more times).

19) when it comes to more complicated narratives, how do you keep track of outlines, characters, development, timeline, ect.?

Badly! Which is why I’ve never successfully finished a longfic! But I do try and make outlines or at least a tidy splash of notes at the bottom of the Gdoc. One fic I’m working on right now requires spreadsheets.

20) do you write in long sit-down sessions or in little spurts?

Little spurts. NaNo’s been excellent in the past at making me do more than a couple hundred words on a good day. Alas, the last Camp NaNo I signed up for I dipped out of because of my migraines, and I didn’t even bother signing up for July.

21) what do you think when you read over your older work?

For the most part I consider it all passable, as far back as AO3 goes at least. Anything earlier than that I pretend doesn’t exist. 

22) are there any subjects that make you uncomfortable to write?

Intimacy, be it porn or fluff. Anything technical I can’t gloss over with some hastily gathered Wikipedian knowledge. Comedy.

23) any obscure life experiences that you feel have helped your writing?

I don’t think so? Not much of my personal experience has been applicable to what I’ve written. A bit of geography, maybe?

24) have you ever become an expert on something you previously knew nothing about, in order to better a scene or a story?

I’d never claim to be an expert on anything, but I do try and do my research for fic. Learning new things is my favorite part of writing.

It’s unsettling, how easy clapping alchemy has turned out to be.

He’d expected it to be difficult, to be something he’d have to learn through trial and error. He doesn’t know why he thought that. Edward’s never shown any hesitation in the use of it—though when has Edward shown hesitation in anything? Bad example. Not that there are a lot of examples to choose from, and of those he’s only been able to see Alphonse transmute without a circle. That’s a somewhat recent development, isn’t it? Before the boys went up to Briggs. He never thought to ask what had happened to allow Alphonse to abandon circles. It hadn’t occurred to him to think that anything needed to have happened to allow it at all. Knowing the source of clapping alchemy, he doubts it was anything pleasant. One more thing to ask after, once he can see again.

This ability, this… gift? He hesitates to call it that. Unwanted, unasked for, received all the same. Fine. This gift wasn’t learned. It feels grafted into him, weird and rough at its edges, like the scars on his torso his shirts still catch on months after burning Lust to ash. Unnaturally a part of him, but a part of him still. For all the knowledge that was poured into his mind in the Gate, he doesn’t feel like he learned anything.

She doesn’t answer. Instead there’s the heavy, loose-limbed thud of a body collapsing to the floor. It has a wet sound to it, a splattering sound. Her death rattle sucks the sunlight out of the kitchen, strangled and thick with fluid. There is almost, almost the sound of his name.

My Author Values Nailed to the Door.

This month, there has been some serious turbulence in the old indie author community surrounding the thorny issue of boxsets. Now, I know this is pretty much a weekly occurrence in one way or another, but this time, the storm is pretty big and it's feeding off a lot of hurt.

In almost all cases, calling folks out on the way they choose to travel their individual author path isn't a good thing - it can be a path paved with assumptions, false information and misunderstandings.

There are always two sides to a story (often more) and there are multiple truths of a situation. I am sad to see my community so divided and potentially destructive over the box-set matter. The world is tough enough for everybody in the authoring world at the minute.

Like with all the other dramas in the community, I'm keeping my mouth (almost) shut on this one and approaching it with a more positive reframe; This post is me nailing my personal (as in me and me alone) author values to the door.  BTW - I have disabled comments on this post because this is not about igniting some kind of crazy bonfire of opinions.

Over the last year, I have become increasingly aware of all kinds of ways that authors are choosing to lead their creative life and run their marketing.  Some of them have left me feeling sad and hollow over the state of our creative industry, others have been inspired and clever. It's tough times and it would be highly naive to believe that the book world was somehow spiritually protected from some of the 'evils of capitalism' (assume Orwellian scary voice for that phrase but at the same time, know that capitalism can be a  beautiful source of ethical invention and resourcefulness)

Like Midas, I have been offered all kinds of ways to increase my visibility, my reach, my sales rankings, garner titles, pay for reviews, create (buy) a 'success' story.

Seriously, dear reader, for an investment of under $15k by this time next year, I could have a USAT bestseller title (maybe even a NYT bestseller title) have a newsletters of 10s of thousands of 'engaged' readers, 50, 100, 150 x 5 star reviews on Amazon and Goodreads; I could be bumped up in forums, reading groups, book clubs, access to exclusive signings, I could have my book reviewed by some of the biggest book tubers and reviewers - you name it, anything that makes me 'look' like a success, I can buy - ANY author can buy; tempting isn't it?

And the problem is, when you know all this is on offer to be purchased, how do we, the community know what is real or ethical anymore?

There are a lot of grey, shady areas, a lot of different truths being lived, and that's okay, we all have the right to make our own choices, create our own reality, but I wanted to share with you my personal author manifesto so you know where this author stands.

I believe in working hard; crafting, nurturing, building. I do not believe in quick fixes; I've been cursed with an over-achiever mentality.

I believe being an author is a professional career, and like any career, it takes years of dedication and conscientious application to truly attain knowledge, experience and aptitude.

I believe books and stories are sacred things, not to be played with just for the sake of market, and I also believe that authors should write whatever intrigues, interests and excites them, meaning if they want to butterfly genres, good for them.  

I believe quality will always trump clever marketing in the long run. I believe quality demonstrates respect for your reader and the word; it ensures you can always be proud of the legacy you will leave behind.

I believe that uniting with other authors who share your values, who share your passion, integrity and love of the book community, will produce great opportunities and exciting works of creativity. Sharing is caring. Sharing is power.

I have never purchased a review, and I never will. When I 'gift' paperbacks & ebooks etc, it is always with the understanding that it will be an honest review.

I have never purchased perceived favour, or scale, in the form of purchased Twitter followers, Facebook Likes or newsletter subscribers. They have all been built up organically through an approach of engagement, follow back, and involvement in the book community.

I believe a small, engaged community of fans is gold dust. I genuinely appreciate every single person who picks up my books because there is something that has appealed to them.

I will never use money in a way that will dishonestly manipulate rankings on Amazon or USAT lists - I am aware there is a shady 'almost accepted' approach by all facets of the publishing world to buy back, or gift, copies of their book to influence rankings.

I will never buy click farm services to help the launch of one of my books. (I can barely get around to organising the pre-order function on Amazon)

I love working with other authors, and I think it is smart to buddy up and cross promote, share each other's successes. I believe with a whole heart that somebody else's success never detracts or damages the potential for my own. I genuinely air-punch the air when I see one of my buddies reach a goal.

Box sets and anthologies are a really great way to introduce readers to other authors in the community who share the same approach and love of story telling - they are a great way to broaden readership and gain visibility. They are also great fun to work on. (I'm going to be in two this year with authors I have known a long time, and whom I respect; okay, they're actually my buddies and we love working together so it's a total excuse to play.)

Personally, after looking into  and flirting with the idea of buying in to a $$$ box-set to pool marketing budgets, it's not for me - although I am sure there are many advantages and it can and is being done, with great integrity and ethics.

I believe it is the moral duty of the elders in the author book community to lift as they climb, to mentor, nurture and encourage newbies.

I am uneasy with the understanding that I could invest $2-3k of money next month and by the end of the year have a USAT or NYT bestselling author title pretty much guaranteed. I know where to go and how to do it (and there are several organisers, companies, services that provide this 'help')  Hell, I've even checked it out out of curiosity and had some pretty tearful conversations with the hubby about it - but I JUST can't do it. When I get my USAT bestselling author status it will be because I have done it all by myself with the help of my dedicated readers, for a novel I really believe in.

I believe everybody has the right to conduct their life and their business in whatever manner they decide, but if someone else calls out the ethics of it, it is despicable to turn around and accuse the community of bullying and jealousy - that's passive aggression on a big scale and I'm seeing too much of it of late.

I will always have time to help, support and encourage new authors - seriously, reach out; I've got 9 books under my belt and run a small press house, as well as being a professional editor, so feel free to ask.

I noticed that after I had it back the cruise control wasn't working I didn't take it back because of the fear of something worse happening to it. My mom suggested that I get repair by my cousins husband so my mom handed me her cell phone called him and told me to bring it in the morning because he worked all day til 7pm and if i couldn't get to him to leave the key under the plant in front of the garage door (that call was on 6-24-09). I tried to get there early enough (6-25-09) but i missed him and no one was home so I placed the key under the plant and left I told the police officer that I had made a call to him after dropping the key but the phone number to reach him was on my moms cell phone. I thought I did I couldn't remember because I came back a day later for the car. After I walked home I thought id leave it there a day so he could find the problem, since he gets home at 7pm. When I got there on 6-26-09 my car wasn't there and they said they never saw it there so i called the police to see if it was towed it wasn't and the key wasn't there either, police came over and took my statement but on the report he stated that the car was stolen on 6-26-09 and the phone number I used to call to tell them I was leaving the car there was written down wrong. The insurance company said that the inconsistencies where that I did not use my cell to make a phone call on the 6-24-09 or 6-25-09 I told them that i used my mothers cell phone in the oath recorded meeting they recorded my statement a week after i reported my car stolen and i failed to tell them i used my mothers cell phone but they didn't ask and I also told them I called when I placed the key under the plant but I was confused because I had called my cousin twice on 6-24-09. I never failed to make a payment on any of my bills and i have good credit score I'm in fact almost done with my car payment. They also brought to my attention that I tried to sell the car but i have proof that i've been trying to sell my car since 2008 and there was a buyer and i have his emails that offered to buy my car with a $1000.00 profit for me. please tell me what do think i should do about this situation?""
