It's been a weird year for me w/r/t fic writing! I wrote my longest fic so far by very much a lot. It was a labor of love and for most of the 8ish months I was writing it, I was feeling very down about my skills and writing in general, but I was having fun with turning New Girl into a larry fic, so I carried on, and I came out the other side ok I guess?

I modded our yearly @wankersday fest and the @harryshouseficfest despite promising myself I'd only do wankfest, and the stress of it solidified that decision lol. No more modding for me (except wankfest).

I wrote 9 fics this year, the lowest number of fics per year since my first year writing, and I posted my first ever fic in October and still wrote 5 fics that year. 6 of my 9 fics this year were for fests. That's more pressure than I usually like to put on myself, but I survived, and here's what my year looked like:

Remember Me Before You my New Girl AU, more than twice as long as the next longest thing I've written, it's really just a love letter to the show. Posting it as a WIP while I finished the last bit was daunting because it's the first time I've done a WIP that wasn't complete before I started posting, but it was so fun! The comments fueled me and I loved chatting with you guys as it was going. Some of you were already New Girl fans, some hadn't seen the show, some starting watching it because of my fic??? it was an experience!

Work you are least proud of (and why):

Uh oh, it’s Magic (when I’m with you) for the @1dastroficfest. It was tough to get started and I think I tried like 4 different ideas for that prompt (The Hermit tarot card), but then Megan @homosociallyyours was like 'what if you took it very literally' and thankfully that worked! This was the first time I've ever been legitimately worried about meeting a deadline.

A favorite excerpt of your writing:

I'm never any good at picking snippets. I usually ask Nic @louandhazaf to assist, but this is part of a snippet I posted earlier this year, so... this is from Just Pretend, my older, divorced larry meet and decide to fake a relationship for their kids fic for @1dsilverfoxfest

According to his mom, he started flirting at two days old, and he’s only gotten better over the last forty-five years. Harry's had about that long to earn a doctorate in dimples. He wields them as he moves closer, pressing his chest against Louis’ palm and lifting his left hand to cradle Louis’ jaw. Cool despite the heat they’ve borrowed from his body, the touch of Harry's rings sends a shiver down Louis’ spine. His heart beats harder as he leans in. 

Louis’s never been a fan of tequila, but the sweet, peppery liquor is hardly perceptible under the taste of lime on Harry's tongue and the swirling, spicy scent of his sweat, deodorant and cologne. Three in the morning is only marginally cooler than midday and after working all night, Louis is damp with sweat and beer and he smells like it. Thankfully, Harry doesn’t seem to mind. He cups the side of Louis’ neck, fingertips toying with the ends of Louis’ silver hair, tickling and sending a thrill through him as he inches closer.

Grabbing hold of Harry's hips, Louis shifts his stance, stepping one foot between Harry's and sliding a hand around to splay across his lower back under the blousy hem of his half-buttoned shirt. Tilting his head, their noses bump, and Harry pulls back, wet lips parted, panting. Louis hardly has time to breathe before Harry guides him into another kiss, holding him so tightly that his forearm presses between Louis’ shoulder blades while his hand cups Louis’ neck. 

Hunching over Louis, his other hand tight on his hip, Harry bends him backwards—dipping him as if they were dancing—and Louis gasps into Harry's mouth. Hungrily, Harry sucks kisses over Louis’ jaw, down his neck to the hollow of his throat, dragging plush lips over the rough two-day beard Louis hasn’t bothered to shave before setting Louis back on his feet.

i can't pick one. i'm terrible at picking favorites! but i will say that every person who read rmby as a wip and commented as they went, you guys are the real mvps of my 2022 fic experience.

A time when writing was really, really hard:

all year. no joke. and i know it seems stupid to say because i've posted almost half a million words this year, but i struggled to enjoy writing for much of this year. deadlines really fuck with my head, so i'm hoping to avoid those next year

A scene or character you wrote that surprised you:

my entire fic for @wankersday in may. it's my first ever time writing girl!direction so i was very nervous and the whole thing surprised me while i was writing it and it continues to surprise me whenever i remember it exists

How did you grow as a writer this year:

idk man. i wrote a kid fic! and i wrote girl!direction. so that's 2 never before things in 2022

How do you hope to grow next year:

tbh i hope to grow in my ability to experience fomo and live with it. i hope to continue to strengthen my ability to say no lol. i'm only planning on writing for wankfest this year, so who knows what'll happen

nic @louandhazaf is always in this spot. she's my #1, my best friend, the other half of my brain, and the only reason i write

do you think d word girlie (also being a dh girlie lol) would be working her arse off these past few days w all the self titled promo and stuff omg. imagining her back stage today at reading being like ‘thank fuck it’s finally here. now I can actually chill🙄🙄’

yeah!! ever since matty announced it at trnsmt, your job has been to kinda curate the vibe for promo - literally, you were SCROLLING through sd card upon sd card looking at old pics and footage to use (and death glaring matty when he came over to annoy you like "hehehehehehe you fancied me when i looked like that"). because it's a festival, you don't necessarily have as much to worry about and coordinate as you did for fins, but given that the boys were asked to headline later than everyone else there's been a lot of paperwork and negotiation and planning to do in a little amount of time. AND you have two other artists from the label performing too. so yeah! you've been stressed, home since hawai'i to get everything sorted and avoid a last-minute panic - matty came into the office one night once he got home from america to help you with any r&l prep that he could, but you'd basically done everything already so he ended up just offering stress relief by eating you out under the desk once everyone else left and taking you home lol. and because you're so prepared, the past few days haven't been too bad, just making sure merch (which tbh was already on the cards for the actual album anniversary anyway) is good to go and the promo posts on socials are all scheduled. and since you got to reading this morning and checked everything was fine, you've actually been ok - matty had wandered round with you when you were checking, and once you were done and said "ok, it's all alright. i can breathe again", he lifted you into a big hug and said "thank you for all you've done, sweetheart. wouldn't be nearly as good without you". since then, though, it's been his turn to be stressed about the performance, so you're now just spending the afternoon cuddling him in the green room and keeping him calm; you're visibly really excited about the show, and just being around you radiating gleeful anticipation is making matty (and the rest of the boys, honestly) feel quite good about performing. thinking you also get changed into a self titled-esque/soft grunge tumblr 2k14/classic rockstar gf fit to watch the boys perform, which matty finds both adorable (that you would do that) and also "really fucking sexy, actually, sweetheart" - he forgets to be nervous because he's too busy looking at you lmao. and i fear that may well continue during the show itself too lol <3

doug’s family is pretty cut and dry so i’m going to be theorizing for what the hell’s going on over here…

so what i THINK the lore is going to be is that roger and beebe had a kid together (as much as i don’t like that, the placement of the characters heavily implies this). However shortly after roger goes to prison for whatever reason. (i believe it was mentioned in an interview w/ billy west that roger goes to jail canonically, though it was a WHILE ago so that could’ve changed).

ANYWAYS, after that, beebe reconnects w/ skeeter & they end up getting married and having a kid (based on the actual show because they were ALWAYS intended to be a couple, in my eyes at least).

Roger gets out of jail & tries to get beebe to let him see his daughter, because he claims to be a changed man (I think it would be nice if he actually did become a better person, but i doubt that’ll actually happen). There’s an ongoing custody battle throughout the show, roger probably ends up getting visitation rights but who knows.

Now onto chalky, this is going to get MUCH more self indulgent because i really really want him to be relevant (plus i feel like he will, considering he’s in that promo art) and i feel like my doug following is aware of how much of a choker truther i am…but anyways, roger doesn’t have a place to live after he gets out of jail. At some point he runs into chalky and they get to talking, and chalky invites roger to stay with him until he can get back on his feet. i heavily doubt this will actually happen but perhaps a middle aged romance blossoms,..i may just be ill though.

either that or chalky was just thrown in there to fill space it could go either way honestly. OR he’s relevant in some other way but again i’m ill.

despite all of that i’m still excited to see that a revival is possible as this show means a lot to me, and whether or not it goes the way i envision it i’ll still be watching the fuck out of it.

Crownslayer - seeing that artwork of Crownslayer on the hill of Chernobog rubble as a promo near launch then in that intro in-game was instantly 'wow i hope we get them that outfit is stylish- wait what do you mean she's an antagonist AHHH THAT'S NOT GONNA WORK OUT FOR HER! STOP!' (Lo and behold, clownslayer bullying) She just keeps getting fucked over progressively worse as things go on... W - The Character Of All Time. Starting off like 'oh sick ch1 boss design- hang on she SMOKEBOMBED AWAY!? NO DEATH ANIMATION ALLOWED HAHAHA HOW FUNKY! "KILL YOU LATER" alrighty!' and then uh yeah, Chapters 2&3 happened. Boy was that fucked up. But then we got to see her plans unfurl prior to Darknights Memoir which solidified her as Fucking Incredible. I finally understood the Hype about her banner on CN. Character I simply resonated with so strongly at that point. Phenomenal major player in the main story. Is she bound to meet a violent end? I feel like it'd be a neat and tragic mirror to the end of Arc 1 if there was an Amiya/W face-off eventually. FrostNova - Yelenaaaaaa....... Perish in Frost is gonna end me all over again honestly. Very important bnuyu. Listening to Lullabye repeatedly lately; in memoriam, and an attempt to memorise the lyrics in anticipation. Personally it's kind of amusing that she gets the True Rng attacks with her Black Icicles. Genuine, authentic russian roulette gameplay. Crisp design, that pale ice-blue is a nice touch.

Unhinged, justifiably-founded but now-disproportionate revenge is just fun. Wear your wrath like a mantle. Anyhow it's as gutting as intended that she's the one that most cared for her troops and the Taran peoples; for overturning the Victorian nobility and their policies. So it'd be nice to see an actual return after they let her vanish in Londinium. Also HornDragora excellent dynamics Ya - Ohohohohoho. Hypergryph really love making characters just for me~ They deserve to burn Yan to ashes, absolutely. Not the traitor bitch-in-chief Sui. Oh, you're mad that you got betrayed by the insects whom you taught to kill gods? Really now? That scummy method of self-propagation allowing him to be all "Ursus is MY plaything and I shall continue to grease its wheels with the blood of all those my Glorious Empire shall oppress!" was one hell of a reveal to throw into that interlude, huh? And that colour palette he maintains across his victims - the austere, harsh grays and black against white with dashes of crimson: it's the bloodstains amidst the Ursus Tundra echoing his presence. Okay I basically said all this already in the tags of another post but it deserves to be said again. Spoilers for the most recent ep of mha.

I cannot possibly tell you how fucking excited I was to see Best Jeanist show up in the first 15 seconds of the episode. I knew he was alive from various spoilers I’d picked up. But I didn’t know how/when we found that out, and to see the denim on the screen literally sent me screeching, because Tsunagu Hakamata is my BOY! And then we lose track of him, right? We’ve got the main plot. We got the Touya reveal. We get Todoroki backstory and feelings. We get DDR: Dabi Dance Revolution. And just as you worry that Dabi is gonna take down Endeavor (if not everyone) with almost no resistance, HERE COMES MY FUCKING BOY

And not only does Jeanist show up, but he shows up controlling steel cabling (or some other metal, but the point remains). That’s not denim or some cotton thread. That is metal fiber. I have always theorized that his quirk was incredibly OP, and that he would be able to manipulate steel cabling. And, in top of that, I truly believe he can control muscle fibers as well. But that’s a whole other topic.

But to see him hovering above our villains, controlling metal with ease and binding not just Dabi but Gigantomachia as well???!!?!?? I fucking lost it. I screamed at my roommate some combination of ‘I FUCKINH KNEW IT’ and a true verbal keyboard smash. To be fair, she expected this of me.

I cannot WAIT for next week (the preview looks like he’s really gonna be going through it, but as we all know, that means he’s gonna have to push through to reach his plus ultra, etc.). I will also highly recommend the Reckoning series by Cacid! He doesn’t show up for a while, but his and Bakugo’s plotline is absolutely incredible! His backstory is the best thing I’ve ever read. I won’t spoil it, but like. Yeah Midoriya is having a crazy time being a ghost and that’s absolutely a whole lot. And yet I still am so much more invested in Tsunagu (Cacid if you see this I love all your plot lines in this fic I promise I’m just obsessed w Jeanist).

I also really like Feathers, Fabric, Father Figures, and Other F-Words On Hawks’ Mind by Sif (Rosae). It’s got openly anti-HPSC Tsunagu, Hawks learning just how shitty his life is, and bonding!

Dying improves Ocean as a person. It is a major point in her character arc, that in death she has become a better person than she was in life but. Here’s the thing.

Ocean is continuously portrayed as self obsessed and as though she only likes the other choir members for the idea that they make her look better, bc of their perceived ‘inferiority,’ and I hate that sm, bc the way I perceived it she was never really selfish, as such- she just had a very specific idea of what she wanted to do with her life, and the means and academic (,if not emotional) intelligence to accomplish it.

(There’s a promo video in which Ocean says “look, I have a thirty year goal to be the first democratically elected prime minister of Canada” which literally makes me sob because. She never got to meet her thirty year goal-)

That, accompanied with her specific outlook on life, where she seems to base most of peoples worth off of academic achievement (shown in Karnaks joke abt her high grade point average being the reason she gets to have the final choice,) she comes across as self centred and that sort of thing.

She doesn’t really even improve that much, she just seemed to gain the emotional intelligence to comprehend and verbalise things she already sort of knew, and in death her conflicting personal morals (eg, the ‘and I am not even bragging about that bc that is against my Buddhist beliefs!’ speech) and views seem to solidify.

It’s why her having the ‘final say,’ but not being able to complete it (“you knew I wouldn’t be able to do it,” and the repeat of her “democracy rocks” catchphrase) is so important, because it’s when that reality of the choice she faces hits her.

Even if she does get closure, she has to choose between how she is perceived/the moral high ground, and the life she could have.

Given that she had her whole life planned out, having it not go that way must have been. Devastating on a scale I can’t even begin to imagine- especially bc the not going to plan, in this context, means ‘your life is on the line,’ and her having to pick between everything she’d ever known, and utter uncertainty- so again, moral high ground vs her life.

She picks moral high ground, in letting Jane/Penny return, despite how obviously it pains her to do so- which is why I hate sm when people disregard ‘every story has a lesson,’ bc sure, it’s a silly lighthearted song/scene, but it so clearly conveys so much about oceans character, in that she believes everything has to have meaning, and if she chooses to go back rather than letting Jane/Penny return, it nulls the meaning of Jane’s life, as she can’t remember it, and because her body was never claimed, nobody would remember it.

Also, if she voted for herself, Ocean would no longer be able to perceive herself as ‘a good person’ because of Ricky’s speech after SABM.

If she goes back, doing so will invalidate all the growth she goes through during the show- and adding onto song theme, every song in the musical is so important to me, because even the ‘silly ones’ have meaning- all the ones specially relating to ocean carry the central motif that everything Needs to have meaning.

Even in ‘the new birthday song,’ it’s shown again, in that Ocean sort of fabricates meaning for/humanises Jane, whereas before she’d only viewed her as ‘a freaky monster’ which made the choice that much harder, as her belief that she should be the one to go back started to become more unstable- and I see so many ppl hating every story has a lesson and the new birthday song and from like. An overall standpoint I can kind of understand it. But it makes me sad bc they’re so integral to ocean and her character arc !!

Also, all that aside, this is not a justification of some of the shit she says bc some of it is. Pretty fucked up- or at least, I disagree with the "her behaviour was understandable if you look hard and deep into her backstory and her parents and headcanon her certain ways, and therefore it was also okay,” because just bc smth is understandable and a valid reaction doesn't equal it being okay. Her behaviour is still shitty- which doesn't mean she is an Unforgivable Terrible Person. Like. the worst thing she's done is be kind of a bitch, vaguely ableist, very traumatised, and be dismissive of other people's feelings. Which like ????? She's a literal child! Depending on what part of the fandom you take your head cannons from, she is not even seventeen years old (or she’s closer to 18 but. i disagree with that timeline wise bc it doesn’t make sense in the overall plot)- but anyways. She’s a teenager!!! it’s normal to be a bit fucked up and have incorrect opinions- The point, for me is in that she learns and grows and starts seeing the humanity in others. And at the end she gives someone else a life at the cost of her own! That's a big deal! It shows she's grown and learned to see other people's humanity and treat them better, even if that doesn't get her what she wants. So. Yeah. Ocean is not an asshole. And that’s important.

Omg YES! I’m glad you read that post! That twt argument was a mess but I’m glad it led you here 😭😂

Hell yeah Mikasa is his righthand. It’s interesting they don’t show much of it after the Season 3 Uprising arc/Crystal Caves, but it’s absolutely implied and makes sense. Mikasa’s the girl worth a hundred soldiers—as time goes on, she’s worth even more as she grows and nurtured that skill. Of COURSE this rare, once-in-a-lifetime soldier would end up accompanying the Captain of the Scouts in combat and off-field. We saw it during the uprising arc in full display, entering the battlefield together first before the rest of the crew, Mikasa helping him with the hands-on work of capturing people directly, even that moment when Mikasa speaks up for Levi and asks Armin and gang to trust Levi’s leadership when they doubted him/saw him as a bad leader for asking them to kill humans.

They went from not trusting each other (Mikasa doubting Levi’s intentions and leadership, and Levi wary of Mikasa’s tunnel vision over Eren) to having the fullest trust in each other’s skills/competency, to being the equivalent of Kenny/Caven (a captain and his righthand strong soldier), to heading into the battle of Heaven and Earth together where not only does Levi trust Mikasa with the final blow (whereas he is usually the one in that position), but he aids her the exact same way she aided him in the forest w Female Titan long ago. There’s just so much transformation and development between Levi and Mikasa (platonic) that it personally INSULTS ME when people say there’s nothing between them or imply they don’t even notice each other!

She has functioned as his righthand in his small squad for YEARS now. When mutual respect and admiration grows and nurtures for years, throw on surviving so many dire battles together, add on an exclusive understanding of each other as Ackermans burdened by their strength, of course an irreplaceable bond forms.

ANYWAYYYYY! Fic recs!!

I think I have some fun longfic suggestions for you! Everything I read is ship-related so hopefully that is okay for you!

My top rec is The Song Remains the Same by @moraleewright! A majority of this one takes place in the Underground where Levi and Mikasa venture off to solve a mystery. Packed full of adventure, angst, top tier romance and smut, gripping mystery, exciting action, plot twists, great original characters, all the things. I’ve been meaning to reread this one for the 4th time 😂 Mora’s writing style is to be praised every time. Her other fics are fantastic too!

The next is Determination by @chaosisbeauty23! I admit I haven’t gotten to finish this one yet (😭) but it is a full retelling of canon that is Rivamika-centered, so looots of adventure and action and moments reframed to circle around the two. Chaos is fantastic and a writing machine, she has so many stories and all so diverse!

The next is self promo (🤭) of my Microcosmos fic. Mikasa and Levi head back to Marley undercover to retrieve Eren after he goes missing. I wrote this with the top desire of seeing them as a soldier duo (obviously with romance budding) and I had FUN writing a lot of their action scenes and Marley adventures and all. The first three chapters are slower paced than the rest but I’m very proud of where things go, who they meet, how things unravel, and how they save and help each other throughout it, growing individually and together because of this journey.

I realize a lot of what I’ve read so far is post-war so not a ton of badass Ackerman action, but I’ll try to think more of other stories that are kinda action-duo based during their time as active soldiers. I’m thankful we have a lot of Rivamika fics even if we’re tiny in number 👏🏽
