Another poll???
Oh yeah, you know it.
Again, this question was revealed to me in a dream, and so I pass it onto you to answer.
THIS is the semaphore flag system, it is used to communicate over long distances, most usually at sea:
Tumblr media
And THIS is the international code of signals, again, it is primordially used to communicate between ships at sea, the main difference being that these flags are hoisted somewhere in the ship, forming a sentence, and they're aren't waved around like the other one:

Dialogue transcripts:
Panel 1
Mina:  Incredible!  How did you know we would need such a thing, Mr. Griffin?
Panel 2
Griffin:  I didn’t; I thought that unless I wanted to be dependent on the goodwill of strangers all my life—
Arthur:  Strangers indeed!
Griffin:  Yes, yes, of course I’m grateful, but I thought I ought to try for something that may actually earn me money. So I thought of semaphore and lanterns and whatnot, and all the blasted fog…
Panel 3
Jack:  Can this one be used?  It looks unfinished.
Griffin:  I haven’t finished the casing; it’s a prototype, a touch more complicated than the other.  You have to be careful of the wires—
Panel 4
Griffin: …Maybe I’d best run this one.  Though only if I get to be in a ship I can’t fall out of.
Panel 5
Griffin: You’re sharp, Mrs. Harker—could you man the other?
Mina: I’d be honored!
Panel 6
Irene: From past experience, I must ask: do you know Morse code, Griffin?
Griffin: I, er…not well, no. Perhaps someone else might tell me what to enter? And take down messages received, I suppose…
Panel 7
Mina: Jonathan also knows Morse code quite well. But that means separating again…
Griffin: Don’t worry about that. I’ll make sure he gets back safe.

Electrical Telegraph
The Electrical Telegraph was invented in 1837 by William Fothergill Cook (1806-1879) and Charles Wheatstone (1802-1875) in England with parallel innovations being made by Samuel Morse (1791-1872) in the United States. The telegraph, once wires and undersea cables had connected countries and continents, transformed communications so that messages could be sent and received anywhere in just minutes.
Telegraph Pioneers
The idea of sending signals from one distant place to another has been in use since antiquity, notably with towers using fire beacons. Ships have long used a system of flags (semaphore) to communicate beyond shouting distance. These methods, though, were limited to only very important communications, for more mundane messages people had to use horse-riding messengers that could take several days or even weeks to reach their intended recipient.
The Italian Alexander Volta (1745-1827) invented the electric battery in 1800, necessary for a telegraph machine to be operated anywhere. Then the Danish physicist Hans Christian Ørsted (1777-1851) created the first electromagnet in 1825. Ørsted's discovery that an electrical current flowing in a conductor can create a magnetic field – which he noted when observing the effect on a magnetic compass on his desk – was crucial to the telegraph machine since this was the answer to the problem of how to make electrical impulses visible in the form of a moving needle. The French physicist André-Marie Ampère (1775-1836) worked to create a theory that explained the relationship between an electrical current and magnetism. The first electric motor was developed by the Englishman Michael Faraday (1791-1867) in 1821. With all of these scientific discoveries put together, inventors now had the theoretical means to send electrical impulses through a wire and then see the effect at the other end. The trick was just how to create a working machine capable of sending and receiving these impulses over long distances and a code by which such impulses could be transformed into words.

How would ungulates do sign language with a more limited possible set of signs? I feel like ears would be a big factor, but they can't replace hands. Leg motion could be a partial factor, but then they couldn't really walk and talk.
My assumption is that you mean a quadrupedal sapient species, like sapient deer or horses, since walking on all fours would indeed prevent the use of any forelimbs being a tool of silent communication.
in this case, I think they would put a lot more emphasis on facial expression and body language. The examples I'm drawing are all in profile because ungulates tend to have very wide vision with a blind spot directly in front of their face. as a result, visual communication would be best done while two of them are standing next to each other.
Tumblr media
(image description: four simple sketches of a deer-like creature's head, displaying different forms of body language. first, the option to use its large ears like semaphore flags, moving them in different directions. second, the option to use blinking as morse code. third, the option of head motion, shown here as a nodding movement. fourth, the option of an expressive face, shown here as the creature making a face of disgust with its mouth open, nose crinkled, and ears laid back. end description.)
you could go with a combination of these, studying the body language of horses in particular. horses are domestic animals that have a complex relationship of communicating with humans, so that's a good place to start for nonverbal hands-free communicative language!
morse code and semaphore flags rely heavily on alphabetic spelling, with their signs mostly just representing singular letters. but your ungulate folk can assign bigger meanings to their own ear and blinking signals! especially combining it with the motion of the head and the expressiveness of their mouth, I'm sure they could create a whole complex language. it may not directly translate out into clean english grammar, of course, but neither do real human sign languages.
I don't think they would, for example, be able to communicate something as distinct as "oh I think I see a strange creature hiding between the trees just ahead of us", but they could communicate "strange creature [that direction] hide" or something like that. it's not necessary for their language to have complicated grammar. Language only needs to be able to convey ideas in a clear manner.
hope that helps! i'm no expert on sign language, so maybe some of my followers will have more ideas to add.

A massively multiplayer radio role playing game system? Disco Elysium, you’re a goddamn genius of a game, what an interesting little piece of world building.
Someone was trying to make an internet in a world without one using radios and designing it exclusively to play tabletop roleplaying games. My god. I feel like I just stumbled into the development of the Clacks in Discworld which basically developed computer code and the internet through semaphore.
DISCworld? DISCo Elysium?
Coincidence?
I think so.

if the ghosts had social media:
pat has facebook. probably also twitter. he pretty much exclusively posts fun family photos, except for when he turns up out of the blue with a 'recovering from near-fatal arrow injury xxx'
kitty has instagram, pinterest, and tumblr. her instagram is all cute selfies and her tumblr and pinterest are full of gory photos
julian is a nightmare on twitter. the less said about that the better
#spilled ink #poets on tumblr #quotes #dark academia #shakespeare #words #love #austen #relationship #thoughts #light academia #BYRON DNI
the captain has whatsapp - you would not believe how much wheedling that took on kitty's end - and that is IT. he does send kitty funny cat memes, however
fanny begrudgingly downloaded facebook (and then undownloaded it in a huff a week later), but spent more time analysing the (now disastrous) coding behind twitter than actually using it
humphrey mostly uses social media to post his art and pretty landscape photography, occasionally interrupted by posts about how much he loves his wife and how lucky he is to have the friends that he does
robin does not have social media. he also does not appear to have a phone number. or an address. if you want to talk to him, you'll have to communicate the old-fashioned way (semaphore flags). failing that, you'll just have to hunt him down

Hi !
The current case is a quite complicated, if you read last file could you give us your thoughts on it, who is the culprit.. also what about kazuha she is acting very strange this case
Last but not least, do you think the confession will happen or not
File 1129-1132 Review
Tumblr media
Here's a promised early review of the recent big Osaka case that includes a case deduction. I have thoroughly been enjoying this serial murder case, as well as all the past references, character reappearances and the Heizuha confession plot that has been building through out.
Case Deduction
I think this serial murder is slightly more nuanced, in that there is not only one mastermind behind all the elements involved, but rather two.
I think the culprit behind the actual murders is Kuraishi Youka (the actress behind Ootsuka Kaede [Momiji role]). I suspect that she killed Narasawa (first victim) after fighting over Narasawa threatening to use Kuraishi's past conflict with the thugs 8 years ago (that lead to Anzaka killing a person and hurting his own reputation) into making Kuraishi give up her role so she could have a better chance with Anzaka.
Tumblr media
Narasawa probably found out from Kakiwaki Ayari (second victim) that her love rival's (Kuraishi's) weakness was that she feels responsible for damaging Anzaka's reputation, and Kakiwaki was most likely the one who shared the screenshot of the news article (File 1132).
Tumblr media
I suspect that Kakiwaki was killed because she figured out that Kuraishi was behind Narasawa's death, since Narasawa died soon after she shared that info about Kuraishi with her. Kakiwaki likely threatened that she would expose her unless she followed her demands, hence why she said to the police that she "has forgotten" [won't tell] who the love rival of Narasawa was unless it serves her (File 1130).
Tumblr media
I also suspect however that the other layer behind killing Kakiwaki, and especially Nagakubo Nobuya, is that they might have had nefarious plans of orchestrating a death to not only boost the mystic and intrigue for the play, but also further their careers at the expense of Kuraishi and Anzaka, building on the marionette devil's curse (File 1129)
Tumblr media
This would fit with how Kakiwaki was happily hoping for another murder to take place after Kabumoto (as if she has things in store) (File 1129).
Tumblr media
So in short, this whole serial murder started with Kuraishi trying to protect Anzaka from the cast members who wanted to do him harm and she was planning to turn herself into the final victim (commit suicide), and I also suspect she was planning on framing Yoshiura for the murders, since she probably blamed him for not helping de-escalating the thug-fight Anzaka went through 8 years ago that hurt him and rather just filmed the whole incident (File 1132). Kuraishi might have also heard what Yoshiura said about himself, Nagakubo & Kakiwaki taking over the role of Heichi, Daigorou and Kaede (which was because he knew about Anzaka's deteriorating health from the incident 8 years ago that was gonna limit his activities) (File 1130) and it could have made her view him just as inconsiderate as the rest of the cast members.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This would explain why Yoshiura was always stuck in the bathroom with a bad stomach without alibi for all the murders (as if someone could have messed with his disgestive system) (File 1131) as well as why he was suddenly gone from the bathroom at the end of File 1132 (as if he could have been called to Naniwa Harukas observation deck to get framed for Kuraishi's suicide as she shows him the view from the top that he once showed her and Anzaka 8 years ago).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So now, at the end of File 1132, Conan and Heiji have ambushed Kuraishi as she is about to turn herself into the final victim and expecting Yoshiura to arrive and get framed for it.
Tumblr media
Now, I think the tricky part of this case is that the Semaphore codes and phone messages left in the crime scene were actually not left by Kuraishi, but rather the only person who was mostly the first person present near the bodies, Anzaka Tenma (File 1132).
Tumblr media
Anzaka immediately realized after Narasawa's fall that she was likely killed by his former schoolmate, Kuraishi, which is why he wanted to stop his mother from revealing that he was the first person to innocently encounter the crime scene (File 1132).
Tumblr media
This explains why Nagakubo got the impression that Anzaka was first to arrive, but somehow pretended to arrive later (File 1130),... because just after fixing up Narasawa's body into a semaphore code, he ran up to the highest floor in order to drop her phone from the roof with the fake message from the Marionette devil (Kabumoto's curse), which Conan and Heiji later discovered (File 1129).
Tumblr media
This also coincides well with Kuraishi's intense reaction to all the messages to the point of fainting and losing her cool, which made Heiji suspect that she is hiding something. All of her words so far while fearing Kabumoto's curse has directly been confessing that she has been responsible and that the murders will not stop unless she dies (File 1129-1131).
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Anzaka's messages weren't however to scare her or give her guilt for the murders he predicted she would commit. I suspect that he predicted she was gonna kill Kakiwaki and Nagakubo right after Narasawa, and that she was gonna end all the murders with her as the final death (by suicide). This is why Anzaka wrote on the phone "two more to go" after Kakiwaki's death, and he wanted to convey with "from shimote" that when you gather all the letters of the semaphore codes ("E", "V", "I" and the predictable "L"), that you are supposed to read the message from the right (rather than stage right, as Heiji deduced), and so rather than "EVIL", he is trying to spell the message "LIVE" for Kuraishi, as in that she shouldn't commit suicide after Nagakubo's death (File 1132).
Tumblr media
As for how Anzaka was able to leave a semaphore code using Kakiwaki's corpse despite her falling while he was asleep upstairs (File 1131), it's most likely due to the timing of her death getting fabricated. After Anzaka had discovered Kakiwaki dead on the ground (as he predicted), he formed the semaphore code with her corpse and then went upstairs to nap and asked Kuraishi to wake him up in 30 min.
Tumblr media
When Kuraishi arrived to wake Anzaka up, the missing recording of Kakiwaki's scream from a previous play (File 1132) was then made to sound as if it was getting further away to mimic the scream of a falling person, from outside the balcony (for example, by making it so that the volume gradually gets lowered), and then followed by a landing "thud" sound, ultimately resulting in giving both Anzaka and Kuraishi an alibi for Kakiwaki's death. The framed certificate on the wall for the previous play might have been removed to not remind anyone about Kakiwaki's recorded scream amidst the police investigation.
Tumblr media
Since Anzaka expected Kuraishi to come alone, I'm leaning towards Kuraishi being the one who fabricated the timing of Kakiwaki's fall and intentionally brought Heiji and Conan with her as witnesses for her and Anzaka to gain an alibi (File 1130).
Tumblr media
As for Nagakubo's death, while Kuraishi most likely was scared by Kabumoto's curse, her plan was most likely exactly as Conan proposed, that she shouted to get Nagakubo's attention from the rooftop so he would lean on the railing that were corroded by liquid gallium and fall to his death (File 1132).
Tumblr media
Confession
I predict that Kazuha is gonna be the one to confess her feelings to Heiji, as foreshadowed by how Osamu Kenzaki's fiancé Takeno Yuki proposed to him in Naniwa Harukas Observation deck, in order for Gosho to subvert the predictable planned confession attempts by Heiji that have constantly failed (File 1129-1131).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's unfortunate that Momiji hasn't had an opportunity to be present through out this whole case, but since she was said to be busy with a Karuta match (File 1129), it's not unlikely that she could make an appearance in the resolution chapter just in time to interrupt Heiji from getting a chance to reply to Kazuha's confession.
Tumblr media
Kazuha has however had other plans in mind. It seems like she has been planning to surprise Ran with something (File 1129), and though she got scolded for remaining involved with a case for that reason by her mother, and then later having her father Toyama Ginshiro appear sternly to also make sure she listens to her mother (File 1132), despite getting a little discouraged, Kazuha persistently goes ahead and tries to bring Ran to Naniwa Harukas observation deck (as planned by Heiji), as if her surprise for Ran can still be achieved over there.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
From the way Kazuha has acted, it seems like her surprise for Ran is very detached from Heiji, so if she is ultimately gonna confess to Heiji in the resolution chapter, it's very likely gonna be a spur-of-the-moment confession like Shinichi's in London. In that case, it could mean that her surprise for Ran might get resolved after her confession to Heiji, and if the reply to her confession indeed gets interrupted by Momiji who arrives just in time after the Karuta match, then I could see all of this culminating into something like Momiji playing a role in Ran's surprise, like for example Kazuha and Momiji having planned a trip/event for Ran's upcoming birthday, since they are her friends. This would turn it all into a truly wholesome twist, and it could also set up an aftermath case where Momiji has to beat Kazuha into confessing to Heiji and get his reply before he gives his reply to Kazuha's confession, and subsequently more ShinRan developments and even a potential Shinichi reappearance.
Overall I thoroughly enjoyed this long case and I couldn't be more excited for the resolution. It's nice to finally have Ginshiro appear again (for the first time during Rum arc) after so long and I'm especially excited to find out what Kazuha's mother's personality and character is like after the recent reveal that she is an Ex-elite agent of the Osaka police's firearms control unit (File 1131).

Game changer episode idea: Telephone. They have to pass increasingly bizarre messages through a number of people in increasingly difficult ways.
Like. Here's the message. Whatever you say will be played backwards for the next player. Or here's the message you can only convey it with charades but the person you're doing the charades for can't tell you what they think the message is they just have to pass it along. Here's the message you can write it down but you can only use your non dominant hand and you're given a quill to use. Pass on the message using only emojis.
They're given a big binder of different communication methods they can consult for a round. Here's the message get it to the next player using semaphore. You can flicker the lights in Morse code but we're not telling the player what you're doing.

Bovril began to rap out Morse code on the frame of the bed. Alek shushed the beast.
Bovril knows Morse Code?? AND Semaphore??
Granted there's a line that says it can't spell things, so it can say the letters but it can't string them into a word, but also the creature is barely a month and a half old. Give it two years and that little guy is gonna be writing memos on a typewriter.

aghh i finally sat with other ppl at school today!!!
so i sat with these girls who are like aquanticates?? idk how to spell that
and it was so great we talked about like. actual stuff. i went a whole lunch without hearing anything about the bible or school.
and halfway thru this kinda bitchy girl who i used to sit with came over and was like 'why are you sitting with them' because she has some weird fight with one of them about the most stupid shit ever
so i finally just told her and my other friends about how they were ignoring me all holidays and never hung out with me even though they made plans before the holidays (meaning i just went to places and they stood me up and stuff)
and i was also talking about how i had a birthday party and pretty much all of them just ignored me, didnt even tell me if they could come or not, just ghosted me. so i planned a party for like 15 ppl and 6 showed up. all but one was not part of my friend group
and THIS GIRL. has the absolute AUDACITY.
she says 'oh. i just had your texts muted all holidays'
GIRL WHAT THE FUCK.
i just assumed she wasnt answering me because she like had no data, or was busy
BUT SHE WAS JUST INTENTIONALLY NOT READING MY TEXTS.
WHAT THE FUCK DO U WANT ME TO DO?? SEND OVER. FUCKING CARRIER PIGEONS?? MORSE CODE???? SEMAPHORE??
and like MORE THAN HALF OF MY FRIENDS SAY THEY ALSO MUTED MY TEXTS.
so i have spent. the ENTIRE SUMMER HOLIDAYS. trying to talk to these people. making plans. asking if they want to come over to talk, or hang out, or even just do homework or study. and i have been basically talking to a brick wall.
because THEY WERE JUST COMPLETELY MUTING MY TEXTS
and they were all LOOKING at me, like i was some complete weirdo, and there was something wrong with me, just because i have the audacity to WANT TO COMMUNICATE WITH THE PEOPLE WHO ARE MEANT TO BE MY FRIENDS. LIKE I AM A TEENAGER WHY AM I WEIRD FOR WANTING TO HANG OUT WITH PEOPLE.
so yeah. im not fucking hanging out with these people anymore. i had a class with them later that day and i was just sitting there being nice and talking but why am i even putting in effort into these friendships when these people couldnt be arsed to read my text messages, let alone respond. im done with them.
i just walked over back to those other nicer girls and we talked about like colour contacts or something dumb like that. you know, normal random conversation
sorry for the long venty post im just so annoyed at these people

Another reminder that there's no universal symbolism.
And, by proxy, a reminder that languages are a way of communicating one information via different methods. Sign language uses hand gestures and movements, verbal languages take speech, there's several real-life whistling languages, there's the Morse code, there's binary and all sorts of numeral systems, there's the semaphore, ciphers like the "dancing men" or pigpen, there's the heraldics of Europe, there's the language of flower bouquets and even secret calligraphy languages that hide second layer meanings in the way the letters of a word are written down to the amount of decorative loops and tilt.
Language is a magical thing in a way that anything can be considered language, once there's a system of decoding it. Language could be a ruler with each mark assigned to a letter, used for measuring specific sticks the length of which encode the meaning of the message.
There's so many possibilities. I'm going crazy over them.

You mention ships receiving commands during a fight, most recently in the post about British tactics and wheeling the Excellent around to cut off the Spanish.
What tools did they have and use to actually make those commands? I'd imagine your ability to shout across the water during a fight is limited, so probably visual communication like semaphore or Morse code using lanterns?
Hello,
Until the middle of the 19th century, signal flags were used at sea, even during battles. For this purpose, the individual navies had their own books in which various codes and letters, etc. were noted, which were read, interpreted and passed on by the respective officers in charge. However, even today, people still communicate with flags next to other things like morse and so on.
Tumblr media
Signalbook, c. 1810 (x)
In addition to signalling by flags during the day, various night signals were also developed. From the 18th to the mid-19th century, they were based on arrangements of four or fewer lanterns arranged in horizontal or vertical lines or in squares or triangles, sometimes supplemented by a masthead light, either alone or with rockets, blue lights or mock fires.
The system of sail and gun signals began to be used as early as the 14th century, and only within a fleet, to send messages to the entire alliance. This lasted until the 18th century. Here, however, they were only light commands, such as raise anchor, foreign ship has been sighted. The problem here was the distance to the other ships and was therefore quite limited.
I hope this helps you. And then I wish you a good evening.

Who is attempting to cover the translation desk now that Noraxoekodurosugofbyn has retired? Those are some big shoes to fill.
Thank you for your question!
Since Noraxoekodurosugofbyn's retirement, we've been in the delicate process of finding a suitable replacement for the Translation Officer role. The search is underway, with applicants invited and interviews beginning shortly.
This is taking slightly longer than hoped. It is now a priority, as we're rapidly running out of the backlog of translated posts that Noraxoekodurosugofbyn left for us.
For now, we're tackling the more complicated bits using a combination of automated translation and a general office show of hands.
We invite any applicants to apply.
