I'm a little annoyed by that maritime flag signaling article going around—you know, the one written by a novelist, who only seems to have a passing familiarity with the International Code of Signals developed in the later 19th century, and not any earlier maritime flag codes. Of course I'm going to be put out that there's no mention of my very special historical blorbo, Captain Frederick Marryat and his pioneering Code of Signals, but the writer missed the mark in other ways, too.

The limited vocabulary of code books invariably affects what will be communicated. Possibly the most famous set of flag signals of all time, Lord Nelson's message in Popham's Code at the Battle of Trafalgar, was also subject to revision and last-minute edits by the constraints of the code. The choice to spell out D-U-T-Y is a master stroke of meaning.

The writer can't imagine two ships signalling, "Emetic has been given without good results," but we know that all sorts of seemingly trivial conversations were had using maritime flags: including a discussion of spoilers for one of Captain Marryat's own novels! Ordinary people also used Marryat's code, designed for merchant vessels, to exchange clandestine messages in newspapers.

Modern au idea

Geralt's a bartender with a teeny tiny massive crush on the local musician Jaskier who plays at his bar every week. His favorite part of the night is when Jaskier comes up to the bar after his set and chats away to him, high off the adrenalin of performing. That is until one night when instead of his usually bubbly voice calling out before he's even seated, Jaskier sits nervously at the bar and orders an angel shot

I think movie buff Duke Thomas should force Jason to watch the LOTR movies and literature nerd Jason Todd should force Duke to read the books.

They should make a movie night out of it and then a weekly book club that's really just Jason periodically hacking comms during Duke's patrol so he can yell at him to finish each chapter like a deranged English teacher that follows you around at work. And then they should get into heated arguments about Tom Bombadil; and Duke should get really invested in overanalyzing all the poetry in the book trilogy; and Jason should rewatch all three movies like seven times at least so he can scribble thoughts into the margins of his paperback copies, write dissertations in his head about the effectiveness of different story changes, and cry at Sam's "But I can carry you!" without having to stop reading.

And then they should repeat all of this with The Hobbit. They're both a little psychotic about it and the rest of the family is tired.

Dick: Elasticy, boy is already suspects it being a meta because of his gymnastics and abilities to twist his body around. So it would just make it perfect if he really could stretch and deform his body like a rubber. (bonus if the little weirdo began saying GumGum after Tim introduced him to OP)

Jason: Necromancy, I like both the idea that he can talk to the dead, and or revive them. I feel like it fits because of the pit’s influence as well. Getting revenge for people even when they’re in the afterlife, and getting help from them afterwards, spying/recon.

Tim: Psychometry, gaining information about an object by touching it. The little detective would use this on every single case. I feel like it would fit him perfectly.

Damian: Animal communication, our little Disney princess, I like the idea of him communicating with the birds for recon, talking to the rats for figure out the best ways through the sewers.

Cass: Mimicry, I want her to be able to turn into people for a limited time through touch. And with no time limit; I want her to be able to mimic both fighting styles, body language and even voice.

Steph: Duplication, The kid who wants to help everyone everywhere, it’ll fit perfectly. I want them to be psychically connected so they’ll not simply be mimics.

Barbara: Technopathy, Controlling and communicating with technology, think Victor but like, human form. I want her to be able to almost connect her mind to the systems she works with.

Duke is already our own little ball of light and sunshine with his photokinetics.

I saw a post about Bruce having an infinity-pocket cape. So the Robins can hide in his cape. But I like the idea that it’s also his belt that has this ability. Both to use as a like protection for the kids. And when he’s rescuing civilians he’ll just shove them into his cape and they’ll be safe there until the mission is over. And explains why he’s prepared for everything, while also having limited pockets. BOOM infinity pocket belt.

Merlin BBC UK TV Show - Opinion Piece Part 23 - Who Is Arthur Really Talking About In This Scene?

Time and again when I revisit this particular scene between Arthur and Merlin (referenced below) I can't help but notice how much "Merthur" has been implicitly queer coded in this show.

The scene I am talking about is in the Season 2 Episode 4 titled "Lancelot and Guinevere" .

This episode can be summarized as follows:

Gwen is mistaken for Morgana and is kidnapped by Hengist. Uther refuses to pay the ransom or send a rescue party to save a servant. Arthur defies his father and sets out with Merlin to rescue Gwen. ______________________________________________________________

After Arthur and Merlin escape from the Wilddeoren, they have the following scene:

While the casual viewer will look at this scene and state it is Arthur confessing his love for Gwen, however LISTEN CAREFULLY TO WHAT THEME PLAYS FROM 0:55 SECONDS ONWARDS IN THE BACKGROUND OF THIS SCENE.

The theme it plays is Merlin's Arrival to Camelot:

Now ask youself why would the show put in "Merlin's Arrival to Camelot" theme in the background of a scene where Arthur is confessing his love for Gwen?

Especially when Arthur and Gwen already have a theme song called Gwen & Arthur Romance Suite.

Shockingly, the Gwen & Arthur Romance Suite is actually played in the background of a scene between Gwen and Lancelot when they kiss for the first time and Gwen states " As long as I live, my feelings for you will never fade."

Going back to the scene between Merlin and Arthur, dont you think Arthur's description of Gwen can also be used for Merlin.

MERLIN You didn't know if they worked?

ARTHUR My father won't let me rescue a servant. Do you honestly believe he'd let me marry one?

(IN SEASON 1 EPISODE 4 THE POISONED CHALICE. UTHER FORBADE ARTHUR TO RESCUE MERLIN AND EVEN HAD HIM IMPRISONED WHEN HE BROUGHT BACK THE CURE FOR MERLIN)

MERLIN You want to marry Gwen?

ARTHUR No! No...I...I don't know...It's all talk, and that's all it can ever be.

MERLIN When you're King, you can change that.

ARTHUR I can't expect Guinevere to wait for me.

MERLIN If she feels as you do, she'll wait for you.

(IN THE END OF THE SERIES, IT IS MERLIN WHO HAS BEEN WAITING FOR ARTHUR FOR THOUSANDS OF YEARS!!)

ARTHUR We don't even know if she's still alive.

MERLIN No, she is. We will find her.

ARTHUR Come on. We've got a long trek ahead. Oh, and Merlin...if you dare tell anyone about this, I promise I will make your life a living hell.

MERLIN You mean, more than you already do?

ARTHUR Yeah.

MERLIN We could talk about your feelings while you walk.

ARTHUR Shut up, Merlin.

I also managed to get a snapshot of a commentary Bradley James and Colin Morgan did for this particular episode and it is available on the DVD. Bradley's commentary is indeed very telling.

Well, now I gotta ask... What happened to Eclipse after Sun and Moon began running the Daycare? Was he put to work elsewhere? Did he help them out with running things?

so! he was shifted to the Daycare initially but when there were simply too many kids for one bot to handle, Sun and Moon were built. and then all three of them Moon worked at the Daycare. since Management didn’t want to completely overhaul Eclipse’s code, they left him as is. while Sun and Moon were programmed to be nurturers, Eclipse kept his original programming as a child’s entertainment bot.

so while Sun and Moon took care of the kids, Eclipse would perform for them and play games with them. it wasn't too big a change, just his same old gig, only with more responsibilities 😅

Moon also had a side-job as nighttime security, but after a couple incidents where he got distracted and failed to report a break-in*, Eclipse was sent out to keep track of him so he doesn't get sidetracked again.

*the story is, Moon spotted a teen breaking in and found out they had been peer-pressured by their “friends” into breaking into the Mega PizzaPlex after hours. moved to tears, Moon kept the teen company all night long, found them a late night snack, and even found them a place away from the cameras to sleep over. After that, Moon was paired with Eclipse for nighttime security, but Moon had made a good friend and the teen would often come visit him at the Daycare until that PizzaPlex went out of business.
