And with it a new host of problems for a nation still shuddering in the aftermath of a disaster. They’ve only just repaired the main roads and now all their progress will have to halt once the snow begins to fall. Of course, he has prepared for this, as he has prepared for many eventual outcomes with the Maison Gestion.

Really, his apprehension comes in the realization of how quickly the year has passed when in his mind and his heart, he’s still upon that stage, watching a sword glimmer in the air. The breath he takes is sharp and cool, but it’s bracing enough to ground him in the moment. Perhaps this frost should be considered a boon, when it’s impossible for his thoughts to wander down avenues that do not lead to Wriothesley. There’s a slight twitch of his lips in suggestion of a smile. Leave it to the Duke to be so distracting an influence even when absent.

Though even that should be a temporary issue when his one and only appointment of the day is with the very duke himself, summoned from the depths for a matter of great import. / @petrokhelidon

Hidden forest fairies that heal you and restore your life in a time of need? If that is not a far-fetched story, Leonardo does not know what is.

... But then again, how many people would believe him if he told them that in his homeland live forest-dwelling Heron shapeshifters who sing magical songs that imbue you with the strength of two men? Probably not too many. So he should not judge those who have faith in such stories.

Speaking of which, he looks up at Leanne as they step into the forest. Leonardo feels comfortable in the woods, having spent much of his time there and treated it as a safe haven while on the run from Begnion soldiers for years; though no doubt, she is even more at home here than he is.

“They say it’s in the heart of the forest,” he says. He feels a little awkward - not because of what he had heard regarding Leanne still studying the modern speech, but rather his own side - how allowed is he, even, to speak to her? He, coming from a country with a history of hatred and contempt for the laguz that rivals even that of Begnion; and he who took many a life of those she likely sees as family during the war. He had no choice, sure, but that is an explanation, not an excuse; she is fully within her right to resent him.
