pokemon: yeah, we've added more and more shiny locks to starters, legendaries, and mythicals bc we don't want players wasting hours and hours of their time in front of the screen not playing the game the way we want them to play it
also pokemon: let's start distributing shiny mythicals, but only after players have wasted hours and hours of their time catching/trading for every single pokemon for specific dexes, which means they'll also need to literally invest hundreds of dollars into a bunch of half finished games and their dlc's. that or they waste literal weeks of their time if its one of the shiny mythicals that are/have been distributed through Go through paid researches

this soundtrack genuinely makes me so emotional like damn. the jack vs fiona scene at the end of ep 2 is already so perfect and then they had to go make this beautiful as hell ost with it too. those bastards
#yeah im gonna gush abt the borderlands ost again#it slaps so hard and i dont see many people talking abt it SOB#but this one especially got me by the balls#cause it really adds to the intensity of the decision of whether you should trust jack or fiona#like you can feel rhys' nerves and conflicting emotions through the soundtrack alone#cause even tho you yourself know jack is Bad and fiona is the objectively good option you also know that rhys has a different perspective#fiona is a pandoran con artist which should be reason enough to not trust her (dude is NOT immune to hyperion propaganda)#but shes also tough and survived for 29 whole years WHILE ALSO protecting her sister so she's gotta be doing something right#and even rhys could tell fiona is very genuine. plus they set out to find the vault together so he kinda has to trust her at some point#but then theres jack who hes idolized for so long and hes literally in his ear telling him not to trust fiona#but trusting jack means giving jack way too much access to his cybernetics and even tho hes a massive fanboy hes also aware of jacks nature#and on top of this hard decision theres also a time limit. like he had to make this choice on the spot#IM TELLING YOU MAN THAT SCENE IS CRAZY. I GET GOOSEBUMPS THINKING ABOUT IT#and no matter who you pick at the end youre always like 'well. this doesnt bode well'#because youve either essentially given jack access to your brain or youve pissed jack off and neither of those are good#rhys was in a lose-lose situation there#txt

Roxas: Had the Halloween town kids throw bombs in his face for multiple missions in a row before finally breaking down and smacking them around a bit.
Ventus: The dwarves were rude and refused to talk to him, immediately resorted to chasing them down and whacking them.
Characterization I see frequently: Ah, yes, Roxas is the one always willing to throw hands and Ventus is a smol sunshine boy.
Tumblr media
#kh#kingdom hearts#these are really silly examples but the point stands!#in fact I think it expands when you look at their full screen-time#I am once again begging people to watch a full let's play of Days#don't get me wrong Ventus IS brightness and sunshine#but he also has the energy of a chihuahua ready to fight the world and I will stand by that#where as Roxas will tend to just try to avoid it until he Very Much Can't#now I think Roxas does BITTERNESS better than Ventus or Sora#but bitterness is not temper#in fact bitterness is usually negative emotions left on the backburner until the resentment caves in on itself#I suppose this is up to interpretation but from my reading...#a lot of times Ventus seems to burn out his anger then let it go#whereas Roxas doesn't do anything with the emotions until he/the situation self-destructs catastrophically so it ends up being nastier#but on the day-to-day?#yeah no Ventus is going to be the one reacting first#you can also exchange Sora for Ventus for some of these arguments#though I think he lands somewhere between Ventus and Roxas for short-temperedness#all this is more complicated than this reductive commentary of course#you have to take in how and in what orders the characters were introduced and marketed#the difficulty of getting the handheld games historically and the biases that set in before they were easily accessed#not to mention stock archetypes for fandom joke set-ups that then perpetuate the characterization...#like there's a LOT to how this came to be#but it Gets To Me sometimes#yza talks about a thing

y'all i've been upset about nanowrimo's shenanigans since last year, when kids weren't safe, and now there's this AI shitshow, and i want to cry about it again, because nano has been SO IMPORTANT to me since 2008--it helped me hack my writing process and make a bunch of cool shit, and i've written so many stories i love using it as a jumping off point. but. we gotta protect kids, and we gotta get the fuck out of here with AI bullshit.
so. the decision i have come to is that i will still be participating in nano. but now it stands for "now a's [that's me] novel writing month." i'm still going to write a book in november, and i'm still going to shoot for the 1,667 words/day (even though my finished projects wind up way longer than that, invariably), because i've structured my creative life around this routine, but i won't be using their site any more.
i will also not be tagging my november project posts as nanowrimo, but i WILL still be tagging them as "nano[YEAR]" (because that's been my tagging system for untitled projects for uh. years.). and it's now a's novel writing month :)

The Stairs Under the Bridge
If you've been following my blog for a while, you know that one of the many mysteries/points of discussion that come up repeatedly is: what is happening in the space under La Sirena's bridge? There's a door leading there from the mess hall and we see Picard walk through it in S01E06, "The Impossible Box", but we never find out what that space is being used as.
Tumblr media
(At least, we don't know what its in-universe use is. We know from set plans that in the studio, the space apparently held the playback setup.)
We got a glimpse of a cross-section of the ship in the Blu-ray set tour, which has some impossible geometry happening under the bridge...
Tumblr media
(That is not a proper floor and something is definitely clipping through it!)
... and if you remember my post from a while back, I speculated that the most likely explanation is that the model has an extendable ladder there, that would allow people to board/leave the ship by a means other than the loading ramp. This would fit with the early idea of the season 1 writers to have Picard board La Sirena in a space port, rather than beam him on board while she's in orbit.
Tumblr media
Well, a couple of weeks ago, we got confirmation that this is indeed what the production team originally intended.
Dave Blass, the production designer for PIC Seasons 2 and 3, tweetet some images showcasing a cross-section of the Sirena set/model:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
As you can imagine, this gave me enormous joy (and a not too small amount of glee)! I have long insisted that the panorama windows, i.e. the exit the Motley Crew use to get off the ship once she crash-lands on Coppelius, don't really work as a proper access point to the ship. There is a three foot drop right inside the window the crew needs to bridge, no proper hatch, no ladders, etc. The only reason it makes for such a convenient exit is that Sirena is buried in a few metres of dirt, bringing the window level with the ground.
And indeed, La Sirena has, or at least was originally intended to have, a proper access to the front of the ship, one with a ladder and hatch and everything! And it's located in the mysterious space under the bridge!
But, me being me, this schematic also immediately raised a question: Isn't that ladder a bit too short?
If you remember this post, it seems like one of the changes made during Sirena's design process was that the wings were dropped quite a significant amount. Where the early concept art has the ship sitting fairly low to the ground, she is raised much higher when she reaches her final form.
Tumblr media
Essentially, we went from a configuration that might have looked something like the version on the top to the actual model on the bottom:
Tumblr media
This change increased the ship's clearance significantly.
For the non-imperial-measuring among us, the height of the ladder given in the schematic shared by Blass, 14' 10 1/2", translates to about 4.8m. However, when you line up the orthogonal view of the ship with the cross section, the length of the ladder is not really enough to reach the ground once the ship has landed.
Tumblr media
(The green line indicates the bottom of the stairs.)
There is some speculation that maybe Sirena can fold up her nacelles for landing, and that might be true. There are rooms extending into the wings that would end up at an odd angle, but I suppose with artificial gravity, anything is possible -- if somewhat unlikely.
Still, if we presume Sirena's wings are rigid in general, the distance from the tarmac to the belly of the ship (here: the stage floor in the schematic) is a bit larger than 4.8m.
I wanted to adapt the ladder accordingly, but getting good measurements by converting between feet, pixels, and metres is a bit of a hassle. So instead, I simply used the measurements already on the schematic and extended the ladder so that the ship's clearance would be 5.5m or around 18ft.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This brings the total length of the ladder to about 21ft or 6.5m, and overlaid on the orthogonal ship view, it looks like this:
Tumblr media
(The green line once again indicates the bottom of the stairs.)
As you can see, this length requires for the outer engines to fold up a little bit and would have the lowest point of the nacelles basically sitting on the ground. I personally think that would make a lot of sense, and in season 2 we did see that the outer engine pods are on hinges and can definitely fold down.
Tumblr media
(It's subtle, but they do move back into their resting position towards the end of the gif.)
It was never confirmed that the engings can fold farther up as well, but looking at how they're attached, I think it makes sense that they could.
Now, in the adjusted S1 concept art of Sirena at the space port, the outer engines are in their normal positions and the wings are actually fully off the ground, with the ship resting on extended landing gear:
Tumblr media
So, my extended ladder is the absolute minimum length needed to account for the dropped wings. In all likelihood the ladder would have to be even longer than that, because the clearance would be over 5.5m.
One thing that playing around with all of these views and measurements made me realize, though, is that La Sirena is quite a bit larger than I usually picture her. I have this realization about once every two or three months, so to make it easier to internalize, I asked the wonderful @regionalpancake to assist me.
Google helpfully suggests that 5.5m / 18ft is about half the size of a telephone pole or of three Michael Jordan's standing on each other's shoulders. It is also the size of...
Tumblr media
... one average adult giraffe. (This is more or less helpful, depending on when you last went to the zoo, but I really enjoyed that as a visual aide.)
And because Regionalpancake is a good sport (and extremely proficient at adding animals to La Sirena), she also gave me this second edit:
Tumblr media
(She also helpfully removed the spacedock workers who were a little to tall in comparison to Sirena. Hopefully, the friendly Averagely-Sized Adult Giraffe will make the ship's real dimensions slightly easier to gauge.)
So, now we have an idea of what might lurk beneath La Sirena's bridge!
I imagine in-universe, there is more stuff stashed under there than just the stairs, though. Perhaps the space gives easier access to the phaser banks in the nose of the ship, or to some other flight control or power distribution machinery. And there's still the question of why Picard, after a very emotionally draining conversation, chooses to head into this space rather than going straight upstairs to his cabin or to his study on the holodeck. (Yes, I know the Doylist answer is because it was the more dramatically satisfying blocking/staging choice, but on this blog, we like to dig for Watsonian explanations, too!)
My personal guess is still that there's some communal washroom down there, because those have to be somewhere on the ship, and that space would actually make sense, being in such close proximity to the bridge and mess hall.
But, since we never saw any of it on screen (and won't ever see La Sirena on screen again), I guess the space under the bridge will always remain a canonical mystery -- and thus available for any interpretation your writing /mapping/ headcanon might require ;)

literally just looking at various potential research labs for grad school and my brain has the audacity to give me the “fucking up the protein purification in front of everyone so badly they all think I’m an idiot” nightmare again
#haven’t had that bad boy since I left my research tech job#to be fair I’m p sure I’m the only person in the labs I’m looking at that has ever even purified a protein#like. of the labs I’m looking at the only wet labs are somewhere that doesn’t have the equipment on site#the others aren’t wet labs at all#but it is funny bc I was talking to a potential PI and she mentioned a problem that I could consider working on and my brain was like. well#this is prob best approached by enzyme activity assays#and I’m p sure this guy can’t be assayed in vivo#so. protein purification for in vitro testing?#but I HATE PURIFICATION.#and also literally if I wanted to do it I’d have to go to the other campus that has the centrifuges and liquid nitrogen!!!!!#which is fucking bizarre to me bc I worked somewhere where those things were standard#the university doesn’t even have an fplc……….#they simply don’t do that shit. which is kinda the point bc I don’t like that shit#and YET#somehow this specific problem offered to me as a potential thesis activates my sleeper agent purification brain#maybe if I were purifying my Own proteins for my Own assay to answer my Own questions……….#like. I wanna study evolution and genes!!!!!!#but if your genes keep having similar deletions in a protein under a certain condition I wanna know why????????#is it loss of function????? and if it’s not how is it changing function???????? how is it benefiting the organism?????#I was like okay well. have you tried knockouts of wild type and subbing in just this mutation#and PI was like /: we try to avoid knockouts bc expensive#and I realized how spoiled I have been bc I was in a lab where we already had and could afford knockouts and double knockouts#like oh you wanna study this gene? wanna sub in a modified version?#cool let’s order primers we have the knockouts you can put it on whatever plasmid expression system you want#that said. we did not have a plate reader or easy access to genotyping esp expression mass spec so#pros and cons. they do different stuff that they are set up for#but also apparently during Covid the prof that studies malaria literally used his own blood bc he couldn’t afford to source it#which. honestly given current events it’s good to know everyone already can buckle their belts and run a lab on two cents and fellowships#456 words#lab tag

so i've hit the dragonborn dlc in my latest skyrim run and my brain immediately latched onto the idea that deshret absolutely had some sort of hidden library 'realm' where he stored everything - every scrap of information, every bit of research he's ever done, all the knowledge he's gathered in his years
obviously deshret's library would be less eldritch horror and more technological and accessing it wouldn't be as simple as reading a creepy tentacle book but-

As someone who plays games to enjoy them and not to suffer, I really hope Silksong has a difficulty slider on the start screen like other games that can be notoriously difficult on their standard setting (Kingdom Hearts I am looking at you specifically, thank you for letting me choose my experience). I loved Hollow Knight so much but I could never finish it because it's just so ridiculously hard. When I posted on the steam community page about it, I just had a bunch of gamer dudebros yelling that I just had to "get good" and if it frustrated me so much I should just watch someone else play it, that if it were any easier it would "ruin the experience".
It was the players and not the developers, but like, how fucking toxic is that mentality? I was not aware that Hollow Knight was considered "the Dark Souls of platform games" when I bought it; it just looked like a really cool, atmospheric experience. The platforming challenges were satisfying to overcome, but as I got further in the boss fights just got unmanageable. A game that's designed exclusively for people who are already good at stupidly difficult games is incredibly inaccessible and it'd be a damn shame if the sequel didn't have the option to play on a lower difficulty for beginners.
I don't like walking into a boss fight, having absolutely no room to dodge, having minimal health, and barely doing enough damage to the boss. It gets to a point where it's not even fun fun. It's torture. Maybe some people like their games that way but I fucking don't, and I'll forever be sad that I'll likely never finish Hollow Knight because of that, lmao.
