We use the shorter, less formal word "bi" rather than "bisexual". The practice is not an accident, it's the result of careful consideration!

What’s in a Title?
Recently, I've been dwelling on my sexuality and how I should label myself. Am I straight? Am I bi? Am I bisexual enough to be bi or am I “too straight”? It's a matter that has bothered me for several years of soul searching, confusion, and accepting that part of myself. On July 3 of this year, like an anvil out of the sky in classic cartoons, I crash landed with a hard thump on the label of bisexual, decided it fit, and allowed myself to accept ME.
I am so overjoyed and relieved by this revelation. It's like a black hole that was forcefully tugging this self-truth from me and hiding in the void has finally just popped out of existence. I feel so much lighter without the gravity of denial on my shoulders. It only took me 33 years to get here.
Although I've been internally struggling with my sexuality for several years, the sudden affirmation stunned even me, but the signs have always been there, are deeply rooted and extend into my elementary school history. They were only obvious AFTER I came to terms with this aspect of myself.
During all of my soul searching, I tried to tell myself that labels didn't matter. The fact that I am married to my opposite gender husband of eight years afforded me a sort of “comfort zone” in that I never needed to adopt any label other than straight. After all, what was the point? We intend for our marriage to last, and coming out would only confuse people and spawn tons of uncomfortable questions. This is the ONLY reason I'm still “in the closet”.
My husband knows about this newly found label of mine, and soon, I'll be telling a close friend, but I don't intend to enlighten anyone else on the matter. Despite wanting to keep closeted for various reasons, including my job for a highly conservative company, part of me wants to shout it proudly from the rooftop and let the world know that I finally accepted myself. I don't want to hide behind it, but I really don't know what I should do in this situation.
In the grand picture, labels shouldn't matter. I've read many LGBTQ+ resources over the years that repeated that, drilled it into me so deep that it actually delayed me accepting my sexuality and lead to my continued denial. Some find labels to be harmful, and their arguments are 100 percent valid. But ultimately, it was labels and the definitions associated with them that aided me in accepting my suppressed desires and understanding that some of the nuances I've been hung up on (specifically what I think I'd be interested in doing sexually with a female) don't make me any less bisexual.
Regardless of labels, I knew one thing for certain by this point: I am not straight and I have to let myself accept that. I am far too aroused by the same sex to consider myself straight, even though I've never been with a girl. I've never even kissed a girl. Fantasies of this sort do not turn me off or repulse me, however. I desire these experiences intensely, even more so since I've acknowledged this part of myself, but I love my husband and have no intentions of experimenting.
I don't need that experience to be valid.
If there are any morals to this story that I'd like to impart on you it's that you don't need physical or sexual experience to validate your feelings or confirm your suspicions of your sexuality. You are valid, and you're not alone. Everyone who has identified as any part of LGBTQ+ has had to go though their own unique version of a soul searching stage to accept themselves.
The only confirmation I needed to accept to realize my sexuality was simply knowing that if something were to happen to cause my husband and I to part ways, I would be comfortable if I moved on with a man or a woman. At the same time, I do not wish for this to happen and look forward to an amazing future with my sexy man stud.

Dating apps, such as Tinder, are very popular regarding the heterosexual market. However, these widely used dating socials are problematic for lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans,  and queer people concerning their sexual disclosure. Lindsay Ferris’ article titled “Tinder’s lesbian digital imaginary: Investigating (im) permeable boundaries of sexual identity on a popular dating app” features a study that specifically looks at women seeking women (WSW) on Tinder, and their experiences while navigating through the app. For example, many women that participated in the study expressed that once they switched the default settings to someone seeking the same gender, or to Gay Tinder, they have found cisgender presenting men, couples, predatory accounts, and heterosexual women upon their page. Considering that Gay Tinder is suppose to be a space where women can connect with other women, and their sexual identities, this is very problematic. Women have felt the need to heighten their sexual identity, or to try to look queer, and use lesbian stereotypes in their profile in order to aid in the the mutual recognizability. The study also investigated Tinder’s lesbian digital imagery, where participants referenced the use of certain emojis and whether they liked different lesbian bars on Facebook as indicators. Participants also voiced how visual self-presentation can also be an indicator of sexual identity, such as short hair, and the usage of rainbow and plaid. The participants admitted that most times, the user’s profile picture features these lesbian stereotypes, and reference to LGBTQ+ culture. Essentially, I wanted my image to indicate how dating apps, such as Tinder, pose a boundary when it comes to one’s sexual identity. Relating back to the article, it is visible through WSW when it came to their bodies and changing their appearance so they would not be considered heterosexual on the app . Women should feel comfortable while on Gay Tinder, and not feel the need to “look queer” in order to get a swipe. Additionally, Gay Tinder should also be a private space, reserved to those who identify with it, without the need to question whether a fellow user identifies with it too, solely based on appearance. Tinder and other dating socials need to recognize that while there are primarily heterosexual users on the app, there are many other sexual identities that want to enjoy the app too, but are deprived the chance of expression once they change the default the settings.

Not so much a holiday...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is a love story with a difference – and what a difference. Yes we have the usual rich girl meets poor boy – there are problems – they get separated – she gets married to someone else – and then he comes back no longer poor, but there it stops. And there is no holiday involved – so title is weird.
In between we have all the issues that India faces culturally, socially and economically. Not to mention marriage between people of different races and religions and sexuality.
This book covers all the above, plus! And the plus is what makes this story stand out – the plus being organ smuggling – although we don’t know that at the start – corruption of politicians, police and medical staff at all levels.
We move across cultures as we go from Goa – just before and after the Portuguese leave their colony and the inter-racial and inter-religions marriages that led to, including skin colour – remembering that pale is ‘better’, and Goa’s reincarnation as a hippie destination for free love and drugs; to Mumbai which is not quite as liberal but is rich and urbane; to Delhi, which is neither rich nor urbane but very conservative in its values and mores. Delhi being the place where we recently heard of the terrible case where a girl on a bus was gang raped – girls on their own we/a/re seen as fair game – and we have that reflected here in the story with other women believing that a woman living alone, and having male visitors, is clearly running a brothel! Little things like this enhance the truth of the culture clashes between older India and modern India.
India has many well educated women – and many Indian women here in the UK keep on taking degrees as, was confided to me once, their bridal value increases with a degree – and also it puts off the wedding! Which is still often arranged.
I remember the bombing in Mumbai well. The Taj hotel that was bombed was one I had stayed at the previous year and a colleague of mine was caught up in the incident – he got shot but the bullet passed vital organs as it was deflected by his wife’s glasses case he had gone back to get!
This is a true saga of India and its wide ranging problems that only got richer as the story progressed. So many issues covered in one book – almost too many but so well woven into the storyline that until you pondered the story you almost didn’t realise they had been addressed. However, a little editing of some sections would have helped as the book is long – (and for some readers too long), and it would have been sharper in its textual surfacing and elucidation.
If you’ve been to India you will recognise the things you have encountered, if you haven’t, you will be educated.

To be honest, I don’t like labels. At their best, they are a reflection of who you are. However, at their worst, they can be pretty confining. Since your gender and sexual identity are things that exist in a spectrum, I find it very unnecessary to restrict yourself to a certain identity.
Throughout the course of our lives, at one point or another, we’ve felt the influence of society’s views on us. Regardless if you are aware of it or not, our identities have been affected by assumptions others make about us. These assumptions turn into labels and before we know it, these labels get attached to us. It’s pretty hard to shake off something that reflects how people think about you, but it could also become pretty harmful if your identity is dependent on the opinions of others.
Personally, I think our identity is something we should explore. Considering that we go through multiple developmental stages in our lives, I feel that we should use it as an opportunity for growth. Change is the only thing constant in life. Life would not be as fulfilling if we remained stagnant. And so, currently, I identify as a woman whose gender expression is usually feminine. I’m also sexually and romantically attracted to both guys and girls. These things are subject to change but also things that reassure me of who I am at this point in time. And, for me, that’s more than enough.
