Sunday snippet?

Today, I actually had some time and energy to write for the first time in months. I mainly tinkered with The Windsor, where I kind of want to do a flashback to Henry and his estranged childhood friend Stella on the first day of Hillerska.

I'm not sure how happy I am with this version or whether it will even make it into the final edit, but I thought I'd share it with you anyway!

There was something really familiar about the main building at Hillerska, and not because Henry had ever been there before. On the contrary, this was his very first time on the premises after missing the open house in the spring.

It wasn’t just because he always knew he’d be coming here, either. Sure, he could easily recognise the building from all the photos he’d seen and place it in the stories he’d heard growing up – but that didn’t mean the place was familiar to him. If anything, the hall was smaller and being there without any of his friends from home felt a lot more daunting than he’d imagined.

No, the familiarity was something else. Something he had mostly just been annoyed to hear over the summer but that really lifted his spirits now he was here.

“Does that remind you of anything?”

Stella reluctantly looked up from the phone she’d been checking for the last several minutes. She clearly didn’t appreciate him breaking the awkward silence that had settled in when their parents told them to wait here together.

“Excuse me?”

“That shape on the ceiling,” Henry clarified, prompting her to look. “Isn’t it the same as the ceiling medallion in your old room?”

She pinched her lips in obvious annoyance. “It doesn’t look anything like it.”

“No but like – imagine it way smaller and raised from the ceiling, and with squiggles on top. Then it’s exactly the same.”

She rolled her eyes and let them fall back on her phone screen, calling him a weirdo under her breath.

He figured that was fair. Many years had passed since either of them last saw the thing, and Stella had never shared his fascination for it in the first place. Of course she wouldn’t remember it as well as he did.

However, that was only the first part of his observation. He ignored her dismissal and went on, “And it’s not just the ceiling, it’s this whole place. This hall is basically the same except for the window shutters. That pink room over there is just like the one where we used to –”

“I am aware that manor houses in the same style look the same,” she interrupted with an exasperated look at him. “That can’t be news to you either, so what’s your point, Henry?”

4. a story idea you haven’t written yet

oh there’s soooo many. in the young royals fandom alone. i could go into all of them but that would take ages.

let me tell you about on the fence. it’s not a fic i’m actively working on and it might never happen, BUT i think it would be great fun to write. so the initial idea came from when i saw two people in fencing gear in the background of. s1? or s2?? anyway there’s fencing at hillerska!! and i went well what if they do fencing instead of rowing!! but that’s not all! it’s also a reverse fic, so simon’s the prince and wille’s the non-res. which brings with it a whole new take on their story because things will be the same but in a different way. there’ll be this whole layer of the monarchy being under constant scrutiny because a) the king seems to be having addiction problems b) the crown princess is autistic c) there’s already rumours about simon’s sexuality floating around and d) (and this is the big one) they’re not white.

now on the other hand wille’s family USED to be rich but they are very much not anymore. haven’t figured out what exactly happened there yet. ludvig isn’t really there cause i don’t care enough to give him a personality. kristina is trying to “keep up standards” whatever that means. erik is in a perpetual state of exhaustion cause he’s doing the majority of the financial and emotional lifting. and wille’s just a kid who doesn’t want to disappoint his mother so he goes to the fancy rich-kid school she got him into even though he very much doesn’t want to.

august is still related to wille and sees him as some sort of project and, predictably, wille hates it.

felice and sara have been friends for ages, and i still need to figure out how to get a felice wille friendship going. ayub and rosh met simon when he went to public school before going to hillerska and they’re still around.

anyway. that’s it. the plot is the same (at least for s1). but everything is still different. and also there’s fencing

14. where do you get your inspiration?

it’s literally the most random things. i see something and go how can i make a fic out of this. it never stops. the scene that started brothers literally came to me in a dream. conversation and brainstorming with friends is also a big part of it though, cause having fresh eyes on it and getting other perspectives is. so good and fun and makes it a better story!

30. share a fic you’re especially proud of

okay this won’t mean anything to you (or will it??) but it’s gotta be running from, running to. it’s a supernatural fic about claire and castiel about forgiveness and fatherhood and building something out of grief and anger and it’s the best thing i’ve ever written

7 Share a snippet from one of your favorite pieces of prose you’ve written and explain why you’re proud of it.

I don’t actually like my own prose, and often just see it as a ‘means to an end’, which is awful, I know. But I wanted to answer the question, so I’ve scoured my fics for something that I’m not cringing about sharing. This is the opening from Making Music.

Simon stepped down off the bus and tugged nervously at the hem of his hoodie. He took a deep breath, closed his eyes and started walking towards the building, pulling his holdall higher onto his shoulder. Hillerska was old and tired, but still held some of the gravitas that it must have had when it had been a boarding school for Sweden’s elite. Now though, it was just a memory; lending its halls to functions and events and trying to maintain its position of importance whilst slowly crumbling away into insignificance.

I’m proud of it because I love the idea of Hillerska being gone 😂

8 Share a snippet from one of your favorite dialogue scenes you’ve written and explain why you’re proud of it.

Conversely, I love writing dialogue. It’s how I find it easiest to forward the plot. This is from my very first fic, Please Try Again Later, and was the scene where I realised I love writing dialogue, and I love Rosh and Ayub being the voice of reason.

“It’s so fucked up. His brother fucking died, what am I supposed to do?”

“What do you want to do?” asked Rosh.

“I don’t know!” Simon said. “I just wanted to be … normal with him.”

Ayub laughed. “Well that was fucking brainless wasn’t it? He’s the Prince of Sweden, bro. It was never going to be normal.”

Simon laughed at that. “Yeah I know. I just wish it hadn’t got so messy so quickly.” He covered his face with his hands and groaned. “Why am I such a disaster?”

“Because you insisted on falling in love with the fucking Prince of Sweden,” Rosh said, looking at him pointedly.

10 Which fic has been the easiest to write?

Making Music. I’m a generally slow writer. I type fairly fast, but I have very little free time, and I’m not great at taking advantage of small moments to write. But I wrote all 15k of that in two days (started whilst watching my kiddo’s gymnastics class 😂). It probably could have done with some more editing, but I was so pleased that I’d actually managed to get the story down exactly as I wanted it. It was a gift for the wonderful @purplehoodiesandclementines and I think writing for someone else was such a thrill and a good motivator.

01. Favorite secondary character

Sara. She is so interesting and complex and her arc from beginning to end is my favorite in the show, it was done so well.

03. Favorite platonic friendship

Felice and Sara. It has been said before but I love how their friendship is treated and considered so important. And I love seeing their journey from reluctant horse-sharers to best friends. It's so sweet and relatable to see how much Sara craves friendship and is so happy when she connects with Felice and actually gains her own best friend, something I think has been said or implied she never had before.

09. Favorite non-Edmar actor

Idk if it's meant as favourite person or favourite acting besides Edvin or Omar but my favourite acting has to be Malte and/or Frida. They are such incredible performers and the way they play those characters with all their depths is so amazing. Especially Malte deserves so much recognition for the way he plays August, how he can be such a slimy douchebag but also portray his vulnerable and insecure side and he nails it all and makes it so fascinating to watch him. I saw them both in Fejk as well and I love seeing them in more different roles.

Also shoutout to Felicia, she plays the 'mean girl' that also yearns and pines for her best friend so well. And she is also an incredible actor outside of YR where she gets to show off her acting abilities even better imo.

7. Character you didn’t initially like/love but have now warmed up to Nils! The first season I had Nils and Vincent switched in my head. Like I thought Nils was bitchy for no reason and Vincent was nicer. And then season 2 came in and shouted "WRONG" and now I like Nils more lol.

8. Pairing you didn’t initially like/love but have now warmed up to I think maybe Felice and Maddie. A lot of the Felice ships actually took me a minute to warm up to because I headcanon her so strongly as aro. But while I don't ship Madison and Felice, I definitely don't hate it.

Definitely But I'm a Vampire Smile, you'll meet a sticky end! Not only because I rediscovered a song I used to listen to a lot yeaaars ago while searching for this title, but also because it ended up being not only fitting because "vampire", but also because innuendos haha.

20. Which work of yours have you reread the most?

Probably You crave the Applause / Yet hate the Attention, but mostly because I keep getting scared that I might accidentally completely fuck-up my characters and write them ooc in a way 🫣

But I also just like that one, so I did re-read it for fun as well.

30. Biggest surprise while writing this year?

THAT I COULD STILL DO IT! No, but seriously, just the fact that I still had it in me to write fanfiction was soooo surprising. And after that first shock: how quickly I could come up with something new to write and now, the more I write, that I actually do have original ideas.

Because the first oneshot was inspired by the first look at s3, and it felt like I could only work with canon and ideas that are already out there, but I quickly realized that inspiration does strike and that I can still come up with original stuff :)

Because I feel like I'm finally getting back into the groove with The Windsor and want to share this cute bit of reminiscence with you:

The concept of Henry’s marriage had been there all his life. It had already loomed over him and Stella when their parents arranged playdates for them, even if he was too young to understand that. He actually remembered overhearing Mikaela joke about her ‘future daughter-in-law’ once; he had genuinely assumed it meant they were about to become siblings. He’d been devastated to learn that wasn’t the case after all.

I really hope the new approach I'm taking with this chapter pans out! It's been a preposterously long time coming.

3. Favorite platonic friendship

felice and sara are incredibly dear to me. there’s something about the popular girl genuinely befriending the “weird” autistic girl that hits something within me, because for me, being the weird autistic kid, i’ve clashed with popular girls a lot in my childhood/adolescent years (even a bit at uni still which is. odd). which is why i am so attached to felice, because as early as episode 1 she just accepted sara how she was. sure it took a push (drunken shenanigans) but since then she’s been a wonderful and understanding friend to sara. and from the other side, with sara’s background with bullying, she’s found a true friend in a person that should be the antithesis of what a true friend is to her. but they find each other, and they become very important to each other, and they learn from each other and grow together.

i do have to also talk about henry and simon. they’re incredibly funny to me, and we’re gonna move into headcanon territory here, because while yes, there’s hints on the show, their friendship is so much more elaborate in my mind. like i can see them just being incredibly chaotic together. like, after all the drama simon went through henry is just the friend he can do very stupid things with.

(speaking of headcanons nils and maddie are besties who gossip about everyone)

4. Favorite triad or polyship

i have honestly never thought about it. i’d read a crack-fic about august/nils/vincent, that could be fun. stella/rosh/fredrika would be interesting to play around with. maddie/sara/felice but in a queerplatonic way. idk is this something?

20. Dream fanfic about a secondary character and pairing that you’d love to read but don’t want to write yourself

i know i’ve talked about stedrika before but i would actually be very interested in a long fic about stella and rosh. in a scenario where fredrika was actually the straight best friend and stella/rosh form a genuine connection. it would still be after stella was shitty to rosh, BUT that’s why i think i’d want the fic to be in the future, when they’re both older and more grounded. and stella is working on herself and on changing and questioning her beliefs. going into how isolated she (probably) grew up and what it’s like to come out of a bubble you’ve lived your whole life in. and her and rosh making it work. idk i think that would be nice

4 a story idea you haven’t written yet

I’ve already answered this here and here. But I have so many! I had a very vague thing come to me the other day where Simon is a teacher and Wille is doing school visits or has some other reason to be there. But very little else has come to mind about it other than an obviously very prickly start, which is always fun to write.

12 a trope you’re really into right now

I answered this here. (But putting out another plea for someone to answer this for me. Or maybe give me a trope to try out!)

14 where do you get your inspiration?

I… don’t know! That’s such a rubbish answer. But I’m not sure. I hadn’t written anything creative for decades before fanfic hit me in the face, and I was always so bad at creative writing at school. So I’m not sure what it is. It started with a moment in canon that I thought “what if?” and I think a few of my fics have been that. My current newest WIP came to me whilst I was losing my mind in a Claire’s Accessories for AN HOUR and I needed to make my brain do something. A slightly chaotic voice note to the group chat and the assurance that it wasn’t fake nail glue melting my brain and voila! Fic idea!

My 2024 follow forever

Another year has passed since my first follow forever and yes I'm doing another one and now it's my two year anniversary of this blog. A lot has happened in this year, so many beautiful memories attached to yr, getting to see Omar live (twice!!), meeting other fans there and sharing that connection, visiting "Hillerska" together etc. It's been such a good time and I'm so glad I got to have this and that this show brought us all together!

I also can't deny that it's been tough at times in the fandom. I have a more complicated relationship with young royals now than I would like it to be, especially with S3 when I really looked forward to it a year ago. Since it's not all I wished it to be it's been a bit hard finding and navigating my new space in the fandom and it's not always easy when everyone else is loving it and having fun and you feel like you missed the memo and don't quite feel like you belong here anymore.

Obviously though I am still here and working on creating that space because I am still invested in the show and do love it and I wanna have fun with it. So in that process I've found new blogs and I'm so grateful to have found this community of like-minded people. It's been nice to see how there is a sense of camaraderie and support of each other. Isn't there a saying about adversities and always finding something beautiful out of it because that's how it felt haha

It can be frustrating sometimes but I've also talked to so many people this year and made friends, talking fics, talking Edvin, Omar and so much more and that's been all worth it so I wanna shout out the old and new blogs I've been following this year!
