oh my god i don’t think i’ve thought about the words “significant annoyance” in so long. bringing back good memories for sure.

i can tell which parts were written by riordan and which parts were written by oshiro. i don’t think their voices are blending very well together…

also, maybe it’s because it’s the start of the book and they’re trying to familiarise new readers quickly with the characters but it feels like they’re making nico the caricature of ‘emo and shadow and ebony darkness dementia raven way 🥀⛓️🖤’ and will the caricature of ‘happy and sunshine and blonde and flower gleam and glow ☀️🌈🫧’ and i usually like this dynamic when it’s not blatantly pointed out every other page. i have faith they’ll show more complexity than this later on though. future yan will let me know by the end. (future yan here, im not at the end but the characterisation def does get more complex thank gods)

A whole flock of obscure ravens rushed across the night sky. The moon’s soft glow wasn’t nearly enough to light up their feathers, so Lyra couldn’t see them surround her standing figure as they violently escaped the forest, only being able to hear their evil squawks. Not that she cared at all. She was absorbed in the uncontrollably shaking trees around her, as they danced to the sound of trembling rocks.

To Lyra’s delight, the mossy ground was soon enough cracked open. It was her sign. They were coming. Lyra took a deep breath, trying to calm herself down by focusing on her respiration, as a choked gasp left her ruby lips. She felt like she would faint any moment. The young witch tightly clasped her hands together, unconsciously playing with the silver ring on her petite finger, distracting herself from the cold drops of sweat that slid down her back.

Was she actually ready for this? She wasn’t so sure anymore. Did she desire it? Her soul was yearning for it. Would she be enough?

There were three of them. Three sisters. Three witches. Three faded silhouettes, slightly drawn before her eyes. Coal-dark mane, fiery red curls, snow blonde waves. Barely colored shades, alive shadows (not so alive) that slowly started to gain shape. Lyra felt her heart fill up with excitement as a rush of powerful magic, dark magic, ancient, diabolic, blood magic ran through her veins. She suddenly found it hard to blink. Small, crystal teardrops threatened to pour out of her eyes, blurring her vision. Three devious laughs resonated through Salem’s night air. Lyra couldn’t help but let out a soft moan in pain as her legs weakened, giving out to let her fall on the ground.

- ¡Oh, Winnie…we’re back! - Mary Sanderson’s shrill voice once again broke the settled silence.

A mischievous grin adorned the redhead’s mouth.

-Indeed we art my dear sister! We’re gonna burn this town to the ground!

Mary and Winnifred’s spooky laughter was interrupted by the softest of the voices. A velvety, sensual whisper grazed Lyra’s ears.

All of a sudden, all six eyes were on her. The three witches approached Lyra at an unsettlingly quick pace, causing their young liberator to unintentionally retort a little out of nervousness. Lyra’s parted lips revealed her labored breathing. She wasn’t paying any attention to that fact, though. All she could bring herself to care about at that precise instant were those icy blue eyes, expectantly observing her. She could barely hear Mary sniffing around, unable to concentrate in anything else.

-They’re one of us, sisters! I can smell the magic inside them-Mary excitedly announced, startling Lyra up.

-What do we have here? How…lovely. – Winnifred firmly held her chin between her fingers, her emerald eyes examining Lyra up and down, maybe just trying to decipher whether they should trust her or not-Whoever they art, they can’t seem to keep their pretty little eyes off of Sarah-the oldest witch laughed.

A rosy blush covered Lyra’s frozen cheeks, heating her face up with embarrassment. She couldn’t help but to lower her gaze, visibly ashamed.

A cold finger lifted her chin up, guiding her eyes to take a closer look at Sarah’s. The cheeky grin drawn across the youngest Sanderson’s gorgeous lips made her flustered, leading her to unconsciously slip her gaze away once more.

-Look at me.

Sarah’s warm, sweet, yet demanding tone made her weak to her core, sending shivers all over her body. She couldn’t help but oblige.

Lyra’s expectations for that night, already over the roof, had been greatly surpassed by the overwhelming reality of the blonde woman touching her, looking at her and even talking to her the way she did. She could swear she had fallen under some kind of spell. She couldn’t care less.

If Sarah wished to lure her right to her death, she would obediently comply.

Okay so here are some of my standalone/2 book series book recs:

Enchantment of Ravens is a fantasy book that stakes place in the realm of Fae but not ACOTAR Fae, more folklore. A human girl has a gift for painting and she paints a Fae prince with human emotion in his eyes which is a big no no. The prince then takes her to try and get her to fix the painting/undo the damage done. It’s not a super stand out book but it was nice easy read that actually got me out of a reading slump.

The Shadows Between Us is a fantasy book where the MC is on a mission to become queen and get the kings hand so she can rule a kingdom. Pretty much Cinderella in the beginning and the changes into some toned down Game of Thrones plot, as the king is trying to figure out who killed his parents while also trying not to get killed himself. It can be cringe at parts because it’s the “I’m not like other girls” trope, but overall solid book.

To Kill a Kingdom is a fantasy book that is essentially the Little Mermaid (with MC being a mermaid that turns human and the LI being a prince who sails), but with an enemies to lovers trope, betrayal, and pirates. Great book with the only major critique being I wish there was smut.

Radiance is a fantasy YA book with a friends to lovers, arranged marriage trope. The banter is great, neither of the MC’s are annoying or an asshole, and the romance felt natural. There is a second book but I didn’t read it and honestly you could just read the first book as a stand-alone.

The Bridge Kingdom is a 2 book series but it’s one of my favourites of all time. It’s a YA fantasy (it’s listed as NA but it’s really not), arranged marriage, enemies to lovers book that deal with lying, deceit, loyalty, forgiveness, and romance. One of my comfort reads that I adore and highly recommend.

Fable is a 2 book series that is about finding your destiny, has a sorta enemies to lovers/kind of friends to lovers trope, with a found family trope too. It based on the MC named Fable who is the daughter of the king of pirates. Her father cast her on an island and in hopes of seeing him again entrusts West and his pirate crew to get her to her father. It’s a really good book and it’s one of the few I’ve actually purchased (but that’s also because the sequal Namesake has a cover that matches Fable)

The Kiss Quotient is a romance book that is a about an autistic MC who wants to start diving into the world of sex more. She hires an escort to basically teach her about sex. Very cute, very fluffy, I enjoyed.

The Simple Wild is a romance book where the MC travels to a very rural area to spend the last month with her father who is incredibly sick in hopes of patching up their rough relationship. From there she meets a pilot and they immediately clash heads. Enemies to lovers trope commences. Cute read, not my all time favourite but definitely good enough to recommend.

Josh and Hazel’s guide to not dating is a big comfort book for me. Josh and Hazel knew each other back in college and when they meet up again as adults they become unlikely friends as Hazel is kind of crazy and extroverted while Josh is very by the book. After Josh breaks up with his longtime gf he had Hazel make a pact to find each other dates and then the 4 of them go on a double date. This is a comfort book for me and I love it.

From Lukova with Love is an amazing YA romance book that has enemies, to friends, to lovers trope about 2 figure skaters who partner up with each other. Has a whole lot of hurt comfort and fluff. The romance seems genuine and the trust they build together is great. I always go back to this book.
