It’s unbelievable how the Akademiya’s Scribe chooses to show off to you out of all the scholars he could choose as a “rival”. You had a really, really hard time keeping up with whatever tricks he’s got up his sleeve to “impress” you... “You ought to fix your posture, a proper scholar never slumps even with a ridiculous amount of theses and presentations due by the end of the week.” Stupid scribe, he doesn’t even get to report the same projects you’re working on, since he only record the Sage’s meetings or something close to that- “Are you even listening? Dirkjake Fic Recs

i will be the first to admit im picky about my dirkjake, largely because i will not fucking stand for any fic where i feel like jake isnt given his just dues. jake is too fascinating and great of a character to just be that guy dirk liked. so here are my four absolute favorite dirkjake fics that i still stand by with my whole chest

The Four Kings, the God Thief, and the Black Diamond Pirates

Dirk and Vriska have it good. They raid ships, pillage merchant vessels, constantly poison each other, possess a lucrative pact with the Wind King, sing a lot of dope fuckin’ sea shanties, and captain a loveable crew of pirate scum. They’re ready to kick back, take it easy, and become the vile and revered scourge of the diamond trading line. Then they find someone in the water.

this has to be one of the greatest dirkjake fics ever written. oxfordRoulette excels so brilliantly at writing homestuck characters as theyre meant to be: assholes. horrible, horrible, terrible assholes. they pull no punches writing the pirates in this story to be just the most irredeemable pieces of shit and thats what makes it so goddamn good. their dialogue is hilarious, the relationship between dirk and vriska is EVERYTHING to me, and the gods are written so fucking brilliantly its impossible not to love them (predictably, i am particularly in love w dave, but theyre genuinely all so good). plus, its ILLUSTRATED, and their art is just fantastic

Wondrous Adventures of Harley, English, and Strider

Jake English has a pretty straightforward life: he is an amateur writer who travels around the world with his twin sister Jade Harley and their dog Becquerel, thinking this is the best a life could be. Meeting Dirk Strider is only the beginning of the journey of changing his worldview, as well as an epic quest of saving the world, when spirits from an ancient legend come to life. A story about adventures, magic, conspiracy, sacrifices, smart people and clever plans, people who make mistakes, and many instances of great love. Set in a sort of steampunk world (no computer technologies, airships are a predominant way of travelling).

this is ANOTHER one of the greatest dirkjake fics ever written, but its also just one of the best homestuck fics ever written. if you liked my godstuck fics, you should DEFINITELY read this bc it inspired me a lot. the things they do w classpects are so fucking creative and while it is dirkjake its just as much a fic about jade and jake. its brilliantly fucking done, and i recommend it to absolutely everyone and anyone

medievalstuck. this one, as well as @callmearcturus's followup fic, A Spark, A Flame, A Fire, is definitely worth a read. jake is so often shafted in dirkjake fics, its a rare treasure when you find him written with quite so much care as he is in these fics. both authors have fascinating things to say about who jake is and how he communicates with people, and when it comes to arcs fic, i just LOVE how dave and rose are written, augh. theyre so fucking precious. im also a big big fan of roxy and jakes friendship! i still think about roxys little petnames for jake all the time. the derse vs prospit worldbuilding also just lives in the back of my head rent free at all times. if you liked my fic, Tactical Retreat, you should definitely read these bc god knows they totally influenced my worldbuilding

In which Dirk plays the role of resigned god-prince of Skaia, locked in a twisted version of the Year King fable. His life is a sorry routine until one year, he receives a very bold, strange offering from the heir to House Harley, Jake. A story about cycles, and how to break them, and the patterns left in the scattered pieces afterward.

sort of a medieval, fairytale style fic. i just love the way jake is written in this one, hes so fucking charming. the story itself and the plot is really compelling, and the worldbuilding is great! arc also just has a writing style that just sort of... flows, you know? its fucking beautiful honestly i wanted to write like that so bad

Sci-fi Brotherband would make a dope moodboard @brotherbandchronicles just saying...

- Hal's spaceship The Heron (named after an ancient bird) is small, slightly beat up, and is packing an absolutely unregulated, one of kind, blast cannon that packs a mean kickback to the wielder but absolutely destroys shields and hulls

- Skandians are notorious space raiders, raiding any ship that comes into their atmosphere and going to other moons and planets to raid them. Skandian ships are known for their graceful curves that mimic wood and for their frightening mastheads that represent fearsome beasts from the ice planet of Skandia

- on the bright side, in the vast expanse of the galaxy, it's frighteningly easy to drift away and escape authority. All one needs is a hood, a large crowd, and a malfunctioning chip scanner. Or an alien ability. The Heron crew doesn't care either way.

- out in space, the Herons find that drifting through endless stars is actually quite relaxing. Luminescent jellyfish the size of a human float by the ship and radiation storms, when heard from afar, provide lovely melodies. Ingvar's never seen the mythical tide whale of Hallasholm-2 in the sky, but he's always watching.

- Lydia was picked up from the space station, Limmat, orbiting around the planet Skandia after the Herons help stop it from burning down at the hands of space pirates. Lydia stole the emeralds from the station and the codes to several off-station emerald mines. A girl has to make her way in the intergalactic world somehow and selling meat to visitors at her grandfather's stall wasn't cutting it.

- There isn't always fresh food around, but Edvin works magic with the food replicator. No one can make flavorless paste taste as good as Edvin. He carries a significant spice collection with him, including some of the hottest spices known in the galaxy.

- Hal is one of the best interspace navigators since Erak's time and his quick calculations and willingness to take a risk in hyperspace has saved the ship multiple times

- Stefan sings haunting space shanties that he learned while visiting his mother's home moon.

- Hal's mother is from the planet Araluen and was abducted by raiders. She now runs a planetside hostel and supply store while refusing to ever go on a ship again. She would've made a crack engineer.

- Since navigation takes up most of Hal's attention, the main upkeep and engineering falls to Wulf and Ulf. They aren't good at designing ships, but give them directions to follow repairs and there's no one better.

- Stig has a laser battle axe. Jesper has a pistol that disassembles into just about anything. Lydia has a long range sniper rifle. Ulf and Wulf have large blasters. Stefan may have psychic abilities, it's unconfirmed.

- In the bright darkness, amidst the twinkling green and red lights of ships passing through the station, silver metal glinting all around them, the Herons pass battered tins of coffee around while dangling their feet from the station balcony. Silence wraps around them and there's no place the crew would rather be than together in space.

#12 is favourite music genres! Generally what I mostly listen to is probably indie folk (Lord Huron, Lumineers, Sufjan Stevens, Monsters and Men, Bon Iver etc) and also classic rock (dad music...), pop punk and folk songs like sea shanties and trail songs (Marty Robbins, the Longest John's). I do listen to a wide range of things but those are probably my most listened to. I especially like melancholic songs haha. Current song I'm microwaving in my head is I Don't Want Your Voice To Move Me by Laura Gibson.

Also a fun fact: just learned that Angus Stone is the same dude as Dope Lemon and I'm completely floored since they have such different mood to the music.

and theres no way actually, other than just practicing constantly. also look at your reference more than your actual drawing (ik this seems weird, but its the only way you'll be able to draw it close to the real thing. you'll have the reference in mind constantly, so you'll know where to draw what and how. if you keep staring at your own drawing more and at the reference less, its not gonna be that accurate)

also dont overwork any area, keep moving from one portion to the other (this is so that you dont overwork an area, then it'll look a little wonky). also grids are your friend. i love using grids, but the only complex thing is you'll have to decide how big and how many. i usually just use 1 inch big, but you can make smaller ones if its a smaller drawing.

Where I used to live in NorCal there’s a pirate festival (kinda like a medieval faire but with pirates but it’s all the same folks that participate) and they had a local-ish band come do sea shanties. It was pretty dope to see in person. There were singers and people playing double bass, concertina, etc. This was like 10 years ago, but I hope they’re still going strong.

I'd love to see something like that! I am seriously considering going to my state's local RenFaire this year, I went to one once, like 10 years ago, but this would be my first time not as a minor, and if I land a job+save up some money by then, I could have enough disposable income to dress-up/cosplay, which would be DOPE as hell. I'd have to look into whether or not they have festivals like that near me tho.
