i'm babysitting my nephew and he just came in whooping and laughing about how he found a shiny pokemon on the beach just outside my house. i ask him to show it to me and… it's just a regular west sea shellos. he and his parents live near pastoria so i figure he's only ever seen east sea shellos, and i guess the whole "some pokemon have different forms" conversation has just never come up. he looks so happy about his "super-mega rare find"… how on earth do i break the news to him?

ah, that's a classic situation. i've heard the same thing about vivillon, oricorio, oinkologne, basculin, deerling, flabebe, lycanroc, squawkabilly, tatsugiri...basically any pokemon in paldea that has variant colorations that don't have too many other physical differences.

the way i handle this is always to start out by expressing condolences that it's not a shiny, congratulate them on having a good eye and noticing the difference, and then explain the real reason why that pokemon has variant coloration. a lot of the time, the other person is going to be understandably disappointed, and that might be the end of the conversation. but sometimes you can have a cool talk about biology that gets them interested in the pokemon they saw! i'd also recommend showing your nephew what a shiny shellos actually looks like and point out how each of the variant forms has its own shiny appearance. that way, he can know what to be on the lookout for. you could even go search for shellos with him!

he's probably going to be a little upset that he didn't actually find a shiny, but if you can foster his excitement and encourage him to keep looking, that might soften the blow a little bit.
