Review Proper

I can’t believe Yamanaka Hiko’s been terrorizing me for over twelve years now. OH MY GOD I’M SO OLD. And true to the Yamanaka Hiko brand, this turned out to be another fantasy masterpiece (read His 500 Years of Suffering Romance). This was definitely the type of thing that would do great even without the BL aspect of it. Now, I did have an issue with Kidou being an asshole (he's almost killed Yoshino more than once), so I’m not excusing it. But I do get how and why he turned out to be like that and I'm aware that it's important for his character development. The world-building was great, don't get me wrong, but it's definitely dubcon 2015. I would strongly advise you not to get into it if that's a deal breaker for you.

Anyway, onto the voice work.

Souma used a tone so close to Gucci's that I kept imagining Gucci being Yoshino. Yes, I didn't read the manga while listening to the BLCD. It was like after graduating Karasuno, Gucci went on to become a teacher, then a donor lmao. His Yoshino panics more like Honda-san, however, so my final verdict is that his Yoshino is half-Gucci, half-Honda-san.

This isn't Nakajiki and Souma's first rodeo, but I'm glad to say that their performance/dynamic here is different from Mikeneko and XL Size. I expected Kidou to be a mix of Amano and Anaconbayashi-kun 'cause the former was cocky and the latter was stoic, but Kidou was only 50% of that mix and 50% brooding, suffering, I'll-protect-you top. Am I even making any sense? Again, I listened to the BLCD first, but the sound direction they gave Nakajiki was very different from what I thought he'd sound like after I read the manga. It’s almost like what happened with OnoD’s expressive Hasebe-kun in the Kotonoha BLCD vs the more stoic Hasebe-kun in the manga. 

The voice work of our two leads was 👌. This might just be my fave out of their pairings 'cause the sex isn't over-the-top like XL Size and Mikeneko. I will say that I wasn't completely sold on Yamashita Seiichirou as Shibata-san 'cause I feel like he speaks too slowly, but I'm sure it'll grow on me by the time I listen to their spin-off. KawaKen was fine. My heart broke for him every time Shibata-san rejected him, so it's safe to say he's got Taki-kun down already.

Oh. I did have a slight issue with the sfx too. Why was it so watery??? Lmao. Even r18 otome cds aren't that wet. But it's not so glaring that it'll turn you off.

The BLCD was almost perfectly accurate to the manga. I highly recommend this to those learning mid to higher levels of Japanese. Futekiya has licensed volumes 1 & 2, so please try to support the official release if you can. I'd be lying if I said that I agree with how they translated it so... literally?, but I think it's also important to see how things are translated that way if you're aiming to dip your toes into translation aside from studying the language. For example, they used "Living God" throughout the manga instead of "Ikigami." It's correctly translated, but I personally prefer retaining the original title. You know, like how Viz uses "Kaiju no. 8" instead of "Monster no. 8?"

God knows if I'll ever survive the spinoff that I wanted to work on. I avoided talking about it for a reason lmao. Anyway, if y'all liked this, then please give 500 Years (Ono Yuuki x Suzuki Tatsuhisa) and Shortcake no Ichigo Sawaranaide (Nojima Hirofumi x Takeuchi Ken). These two are android bls and Ikigami to Donor is more guide bl, but they both share a futuristic vibe.

The set of the “Double-headed Eagle”, the dance ball and the numerous military uniforms and dress – all of this is an assembly of glamorous beauty. This famous work by Shibata Yukihiro was performed again and again, and this time it would be revived in the Grand Theatre after 30 years under the adaptation and direction of Koyanagi Naoko. Yuzuka delivers the joy and struggle of finding true love. It is refreshing to see how the tragic love story of Rudolf and Marie was approched as a human drama in the politically unstable 19th century Austria.

Minami plays as Johann Salvator. Taking the role of a storyteller, she plays a man who celebrates freedom, showcasing kindness and masculinity naturally.

Towaki Sea plays as the Archduke Franz Ferdinand, whose role was more deepened in this rendition. Her acting radiates the reflection of passing of time in light and shadow.

It was impressive to see that Marie is not only cute, but also shows a sense of motherhood and Rudolf almost seem like finding her for salvation.

看到瑪麗不但可愛，也有母性的一面，魯道夫更要向她尋求救贖，是很深刻印象的。

Takarazuka Spectacular “ENCHANTEMENT–Luxurious Perfume–” 「–ENCHANTEMENT–華麗的香水」

This is a revue delivered by Noguchi Kousaku which is inspired by the “ka”  (香 = scent) from Yuzuka Rei’s name.

It’s a beauty and glorious performance delivering the sweet and fragrant scent to the audience.

Not only is there the forest in Paris, but also the NY streets and a night club where the gentlemen are assembled.

It is exploding with the various colours and charms of this stylish Flower Troupe.

It looks like a hot dance battle in the night club where the men are wearing unique suits. It is heart-fluttering to see the connection between doukis Minami and Yuzuka.

What I liked in Diary of a Void by Emi Yagi, tr. by David Boyd and Lucy North (spoilers)

1) Theme of gender roles in workplaces. Shibata is the only woman in her section at the office, and all menial work like getting tea or coffee for others, cleaning up the fridge, etc. falls on her. It makes it difficult for her to focus on her actual work for which she was hired. It also gives her less time to herself at home as she almost daily ends up leaving for home from work past her time. So, one day in annoyance she comes up with the lie of her pregnancy. That solves all of the above issues for her in addition to gaining her the maternity leave that gives her a break from her annoying workplace.

2) Theme of loneliness. Shibata seeks solitude but she is also alone at times. She considers herself less miserable than the married women who despite being drained and tired themselves do the housework for their family, while she can spend her time doing what she likes. She does not like talking to people who do not care for her but would ask intruding questions about her private life and comment on what she isn't doing right according to them. Talking to those people makes her feel very alone. And it is not even as simple as avoiding the people she finds annoying because perhaps the vibrancy in those interactions makes her solitary apartment more darker: But why do I have to deal with these people who try to act like they care about me or my pregnancy while they ask the most inane, prying questions? Why is it up to me to produce answers that please them? And why is the way home so much darker and colder on nights like that? More than that, why is my apartment so dark when I come home alone from aerobics, after talking with the others about nothing in particular, snacking on whatever sweets are spread out on the table? There is also the fact that not everyone she finds annoying is so merely because they have nothing better to do or because they are inconsiderate. I think this was particularly emphasized through Higashinakano's character. He seemed annoying at the beginning, but later we find out that he has his own emotional reasons related to pregnancy and babies. At one point she also talks about family: Maybe that’s what making a family is all about: creating an environment in which people make space for one another— maybe without even trying, just naturally, to make sure that nobody’s forgotten.

3)Theme of lies. She is a 34 year old unmarried single woman living alone. But her lie turns her into an unmarried single mother, and she dedicates herself completely to this lie doing everything exactly as a pregnant woman would do for the entire period of a normal pregnancy. She does this because she doesn't care about lying to those intruding people and this lie enables her to maintain her privacy while still interacting with them: Even if it’s a lie, it’s a place of my own.

4)Theme of religion and motherhood. She talks to Mary, the Virgin Mother, in her head at parts. She sympathises with the role thrust upon Mary and the circumstances of her becoming the Virgin Mother and being eternally known as such, her personhood entirely ignored. Shibata too, after all, could get out of her uncompensated for extra duties only after she turned herself into a would-be mother through her lie. She finds solace in talking to this famous mother who must not have had it easy either, especially in those times, eons ago.

5) Theme of body. I liked how relatable Shibata's self-consciousness was: It was the bottom part of me that was different. I quickly dried myself off and tried on some skirts and jeans. Nothing looked right. My thighs were jutting out. And the way I looked from behind was . . . Well, it was just too painful to behold. This. I have felt this too. And I was happy for her when she felt better about her body after her walks and aerobics: It hadn’t even been three weeks since I’d signed up, but my body was already changing, little by little. Whenever I got out of the bath and looked at my backside in the mirror, I could see a real difference in my hips and thighs. My core felt stronger, and I didn’t feel like I was about to fall over all the time. My belly was getting bigger, and sometimes I felt a pain in my back, but it wasn’t unbearable. Honestly, I was feeling better than I ever had in my life.

6) The writing. I liked all the descriptions of the mundane day-to-day life activities. And her thoughts. Her overthinking tendency was also very relatable to me.

What I didn't like:

The visit to the doctor. It made zero sense to me. I was confused af.

A destacar: El día que me aventé a leer Shibatarian (Kazuya Iwamuro), por Mangaplus. Termina la semana entrante, por cierto :) y ansío que por lo menos de este lado del charco (porque dudo que Viz se anime en EUA, hablo de Panini MX) lo pueda traer.

Notas:

Estoy muy enojada con cómo andan las cosas en Nuestra Salvaje Juventud, a como terminó el vol 6, y creo que es más porque son temas fuertes (no por nada, tiene sello de "mayores de 18 años" acá) :))) Cómo demonios eso puede alentar a que termine una amistad.

Estoy todavía preparando un artículo/post completo sobre Umimachi Diary. Es una verdadera joya de serie y me da coraje que nunca me ha tocado ver a alguien comprándolo en la tienda en la que frecuento. No muy convencida con la forma en la que Yoshida la termina (con o sin el extra que conecta a su nueva serie que dudo que la traigan). No estaría mal que Lovers' Kiss POR LO MENOS si la pudieran licenciar (con o sin vínculos "canon" con UD).

Terminé comprando Undelu por Amazon :), ahora sí, hora de empezar el L101 (y JUSTO a tiempo que Andy regresa en la historia en la serialización al día en Mangaplus, ANDY REGRESÓ ;A;).

Soy la mensa que compra el volumen 6 de Dunmeshi... y aún no se pone manos a la obra para comprar el 5 :))) (pero ya me transfirieron otro pago, así que este mes será).

Hellbound y Shibatarian son lecturas que me pusieron "incómoda" pero cada una por su propio mérito.

Shibatarian fue un poco más "ligero" porque encapsula lo similar a una película B de horror, con todo y una "secuela". Es que el autor se la baña con cómo hacer un diseño que particularmente es un chico muy promedio que se podría perder en la multitud (Hajime Shibata) y el rollo del body horror con mutaciones y demás. Es una obra curiosa, y aunque no es "cinematográfica" tal cual, no siento que sea TAN buena, tampoco, es un homenaje a ese tipo de películas... el tipo de películas que los dos Hajime tanto les encantaba y por lo que se formalizó su amistad.

Hellbound... decir que retrata como sería la sociedad si de repente un fenómeno matara indiscriminadamente a la gente por x o y razón y lo tomaran como castigo divino, queda algo corto para mí. Incomoda por muchas cosas, el rollo de que hay gente bastante zafada que lo ve como un mensaje del más allá como castigo, el rollo de que se crea una secta bajo este mantra y luego estos locos te digan "es un castigo divino porque la persona cometió un pecado" cuando ellos bien también se aprovecharon de estos incidentes para propagar su "mensaje" para tener un determinado control... ¿por qué entonces ELLOS no fueron castigados? te deja claro sobre la manipulación de cualquier tipo de poder en la punta de la pirámide para influir en su gente. La verdad, la 2da parte/temporada del webtoon aunque te explica mejor unas cosillas, no sé... la situación y lo que uno vive acá al día con día con la mentada y media del gbno federal es... alucinante (derogatorio).

Es My Little Bookstore la historia que me dejó pensando si no estaría mal abrir una tienda/librería/lo que sea que de repente expliqué en un post pasado. Me deja pensando cosas aparte de la dichosa tienda, lol.

The Lunar Project, started by curator Adam Chau in 2019, is a series of exhibitions across the United States featuring artists that celebrate the Asian New Year. Fourteen artists are invited to create a work inspired by the animals from the Asian zodiac – a rabbit for the year 2023 – which will be exhibited at Baltimore Clayworks. It is important to note that multiple cultures are represented in this project, thus far including China, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, Myanmar, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam.
