I don't know why but I always come back to this scene. We never get to see him at a loss and confused on what he was. Guess this is why this page from Shin Spirits hits me like a truck.
Tumblr media
Hayato has the same emotional insecurity as Hongo does, it's just he's better at masking it. Take that as you will I guess. But there's something about him not feeling as sure as himself as a Rider that makes it every time he fails and gets absolutely beaten down by Tachihbana hurt that much more. I wonder if Hayato is the type of person who stares alone into the ocean at night questioning his reason for living. I think so, if you ask me.

Shin Kamen Rider Spirits
I read this manga raw sometimes as there isn't any fan tl extending beyond the first few chapters of the sequel manga unfortunately, but I got to these pages and I really wanted to share them TT_TT
I'm not super experienced with translating manga so sorry if there are any mistakes, I feel confident that I conveyed it to the best of my ability though!! Oh Hongo. What are we going to do about you...

where should i start to get into kamen rider?
If you want a short start, try Shin Kamen Rider! As it's just one movie rather than 50 eps. If you want a classic, I've heard good things about V3, Den-O, OOO, Fourze, and Black! My personal recs are Geats and Blade, with emphasis on Geats as the best 'if you only wanna watch one kamen rider watch this one' since it encapsulates several areas of what I love about rider. And if you want something longer than Shin Kamen Rider, classic, and pick-up-and-put-downable, I really recommend the original manga. Heard good things about Kamen Rider Spirits too.

On Shin Kamen Rider
I'm breaking through my insecurity as a new Rider fan to bring you some musings after my second viewing of the film.
I am placing @eclipse-song 's post re K and the movie's ending because it definitely shaped how I think about it and how I watched it this time.
I really love Hongo's arc in the first part of the movie. He's confronted with the reality of what having power means, right away he's so confused, he can't remember saying he wanted this, and having actually used his power to kill he can't imagine why he ever wished for it.
SHOCKER gives people in despair what they want most but they lose their humanity. To be human is to endure sadness and to remain hopeful. To be human is to shoulder suffering for the sake of others.
Hongo says he isn't like his father, who chose to spare a criminal and died for it. Hongo says he will use the power he's given to fight, but in the end he sacrifices himself as his father did. I can imagine that he didn't consider that someone else would be placed in the same position as he was, that is a bereaved loved one. Perhaps it was a way of showing Butterfly-Aug it's possible to move past such a loss.
As much as I agree with and respect Keelin's interpretation of Hongo's sacrifice and the joy he experiences in his oneness with Ichimonji(incredibly gay thing to do. be united in body with another man), I also desperately wanted Hongo to feel joy in the body he was given, even if it's not what he wanted, it's not perfectly human, it's strange and at times agonizing. I think that too is Kamen Rider.
I also think that if there had been time Ichimonji would have saved Hongo.
He deeply regrets not saving Ruriko. I can't imagine how difficult it must be, losing the people who had accepted him as the half-grasshopper he is only moments after meeting them. Blaming himself, probably, but playing it down, always laughing it off. I'm sure Hongo has assured him(many times) that it's fine, I hated being the Batta-Aug, I love being with you like this, it's ok Ichimonji. But does he really believe it?
Their bond is defined this way. See Hongo in Kamen Rider Spirits saying he shouldn't have saved Ichimonji. But to me love is when you are with the person who can teach you what you need to learn, and isn't Ichimonji the one to teach Hongo to love life?
I'm starting to get too emotional to write coherently.
Thank you for reading this far.
Sorry, Keelin, if you didn't want to be mentioned like this. I just think you're cool.

3 + 14 for the toku questions??
Thank you so much for the ask! This is my first time ever doing one of these, so I hope I do it okay! :D (Also, I realised I reblogged two toku questions things, so I'll answer 3 and 14 on both, if that's okay! :D)
~~~
3: Top 3 individual mecha 3: What shows have you watched so far?
For the first one, I'd have to say my favourite individual mecha are GekiPenguin/Penguin Animal Spirit from Gekiranger/Power Rangers Jungle Fury (since I had the full megazord it's part of with my siblings when we were younger, and the penguin was my part of it, so I've got a lot of fond memories of it), God Tarantula from King-Ohger ('cause I absolutely adore spiders, so seeing a spider-themed mecha was so cool!!!), and probably Sasori Voyager from Kyuuranger!
As for what shows I've watched so far, I've seen every single season of Power Rangers at least once (COVID lockdown sent me back down a rabbit hole of watching them all)! In terms of Sentai, I've only seen LuPat, Kyuuranger, Zenkaiger, and King-Ohger in full, but I'm currently watching Boonboomger and ToQger! For Kamen Rider, I've seen W, OOO, Fourze, Ex-Aid, Build, Gotchard, and Shin Kamen Rider, and I'm really enjoying Gavv as it airs so far! I've seen bits and pieces of Ultraman shows, but I haven't had a chance to watch 'em proper yet!
~~~
14: Favourite Monster Category? 14: Least Favourite Character(s)?
Favourite monster category is so hard to choose! I think it's probably tied between creatures and aliens, especially in seasons where it's hard to tell those two apart! I really liked the monsters in King-Ohger as a professional Bug Enjoyer™️, but honestly I have a huge love for the Showa era Creatures, even if I haven't seen much of their shows; they look equal parts goofy and awesome, which is what I love about toku monster designs!
As for least favourite character, I have to say either Shinkuro Isaka (aka: Creepy Doctor Guy) from W, or Barashitara from Zenkaiger, although both of those are in a "love-to-hate" kinda way! I think they were really good villains, but it killed me to see them winning, and it was great when they were finally defeated!
~~~ Thank you so much again for the asks (and sorry for the wall of text 😅)! Hope you're having an awesome day! :D
i know he’s technically not the Robot Detective K, but i’m glad his funny (read: evil) homage character from the Shin Kamen Rider prequel manga is written in the same spirit as the original from Ishinomori’s manga. i’ve missed this binch...
going to take a second to ramble about my favourite bug man for like, absolutely no reason. i was just scrolling shin kamen rider prologue hashtag and thought oh huh. there's nothing . and people wishing there were more appreciation for him,or the movie,just something with the movie and this rider. shin kamen rider prologue (1992) is my favourite movie. a comfort one perhaps, considering how i like to watch it from time to time or check clips from it. it was my first,if you don't consider the 2012 kr movie i watched without understanding ANYTHING,kamen rider movie i watched. by this time i was slowly reading spirits manga by getting myself more into kamen rider. this movie was really,really good. i just love it. it makes me think about the role of "love" in kamen rider. it makes me WISH there were more love in kamen rider. the horrors,the misery,being afraid of your own self and having this hope named "love". ai loves shin,no circumstances changes it for her. he was visibly afraid he could hurt her, putting his arm over her as carefully as possible. oh man. their hug scene made me cry the first time and will make me emotional for 10th rewatch. i was always a sucker for romantic feelings between characters if one is a hero etc. what's new the sky is blue,yknow,mentioning how i think love should be an important thing in kamen rider and the pain with burden the main character carries,like yeah. i want someone to be there for him. like you are a monster and it's okay,it's not your fault,and i love you no matter what.
on this note, here's a picture of me with my most expensive & dreamed figure,which is shin. i love him,please watch the movie. ok bye
I do think you've given the best explanation about why you don't think the themes of Shin Kamen Rider landed right, so I do appreciate that. I have to say for my own part, as someone who's tried watching 1971 Rider a couple times but hasn't yet made it past ~30, the themes of inhumanity and monsterous strength felt way more prominent than any overarching societal ideas (Nazi treasure episode aside), so maybe that's why I don't find myself taking as much issue with Shin Kamen Rider as I would if I'd read the Manga/Spirits/finished the show
As said the shows definitely did dampen much of this, in part because it HAD to to become popular -- Kamen Rider's first 13 episodes, which are pretty much verbatim in the manga; actually didn't do well in ratings at first, and it's only with the show's retool with Hayato's introduction and a much brighter tone and a more general good-vs-evil plot that Kamen Rider became the popular phenomenon it is.
I haven’t seen Shin Kamen Rider yet, probably won’t until to comes to home video unless there’s a Canadian screening.
But I feel confident in saying that if you saw the movie and liked it, you should go read Kamen Rider Spirits.
Now.
Shin Kamen Rider 2
- from HG Shin Kamen Rider
- by Bandai Shokugan
After a handful of Shocker grunts, I finally pulled one of the Riders. What an incredible sculpt for such a small toy. Especially on the coat.
It appears initially they were going to have Takeshi’s spirit physically appear for the ending as opposed to just the voice over
While cute I do kind of prefer the ending we got
HAD A SHIN KR REVELATION ABOUT WHY K IS IN THIS MOVIE
(MAJOR spoilers for the movie)
Tumblr media
[Image ID : Screenshot of a series of Discord messages that read, "
K's role in this movie is to observe humans and to help the AI for Shocker build a plan to make humanity happy and to never be sad again. He is primarily observing Ruriko and Hongo. When Hiromi dies and Ruriko finally breaks down, she becomes a lot more human and comfortable around Hongo. K places a rose in his suit in memory of Hiromi. When asked why he is doing that he said he's trying to be more human. When Ruriko dies it's Hayato who is broken out of his trance and he cries and breaks down and becomes INCREDIBLY human. K also places a rose in his jacket for Ruriko. Anno is a sicko and I hate him and he understands Kamen Rider intrinsically and his major takeaway is that it is sadness that builds us and makes us human and without that experience of being sad we also don't require kindness because there's no reason to lift up anyone's spirits and to be human is to experience every emotion and to feel all that there is to feel [6:14 PM] and Hongo also finally cried when Ruriko died but his character largely stays static until the end where his own happiness is achieved by no longer distancing himself and by giving up his entire body that makes him so dysphoric and uncomfortable to be one with Hayato and have companionship and finally no way of being lonely [6:15 PM] he was observing humans and learned from them that humans, more than anything, are meant to die and be mourned after each death someone became more human through their sadness [6:16 PM] Also I realized Hongo gave away every part of him until there was literally nothing left and he's like the Giving Tree and the happiest he is is when we hear him in the helmet speaking to Hayato. So he finally achieved happiness through his own death"
