• Ty Lee wants to keep her eevee unevolved. Azula might convince her to "make it more powerful." If she does, it'll be a Sylveon.

• Zuko and Azula's mom got both of them a litleo each as kids.

• Fire Nation mostly use fire types, but electric are common enough. Earth Kingdom is mostly ground and rock, but steel is ok. Air Nomads obviously use mostly flying, but fairy is common. Water Tribes use mostly water and ice, but obviously the swamp tribe uses grass.

• The Earth King still has just a bear. It's not a pokemon. It's a bear.

I'm sorry to announce that all of these mons will just be grouped into one entry each! While that seems like a fun idea, it would definitely take forever and I don't think it would be a worthwhile time investment. Especially since spinda has endless ammonts of shiny patterns.

I will be using the winner of @ultimateunowntournament to represent unown and fancy vivilon to represent the lines, and of course just plain arcues.

The only time a Glitch mon should be removed is if it is causing damage to the enviroment (EG: Bad egg glitches making mons that should not be in that location - For example an Espurr being in Alola where it can cause damage to local wildlife!)

secret posts for tumblr cuz i dont like posting long rambley blog things to twitter :3 decided to do the shiny pokemon alongside the masterball which might against all odds after 22 years be one of if not The first regular ass items retexture...

the textures are all for the most part just ripped from pokemon stadium 2 which is fair considering melee's development time and also the considerably lower necessary poly count for a little spawnable dude. it also means that i can just use whatever ps2 does for shinies and LUCKILY it has that weird ass HSL system that means i can just grab the textures off of spriters resource (large shoutout to my man Mr. C for extracting them so i don't have to) and wiggle the colors around correctly and just chuck them in. i did have to grab the master ball texture from some furret minigame for authenticity. both this texture and the pokemon colors are different to modern colors but melee players are either too zoomer to care or too old to know they changed, so it's fine. the master ball wouldn't work on the regular uv so i had to fiddle around in blender and i figured i might as well add a Little detail but i'm p sure this is my first actual model swap so i probably still fucked up...i know some stuff didn't import correctly but it looks mostly fine now.

melee pokemon fun facts:

ditto has a unique texture for his Goo

porygon is made of solid color in melee. seemingly all the other pokemon in melee use tiny 8x8 solid color textures for bodyparts of a single color (something that stadium did) but porygon is Properly done with like vertex lighting and shit, probably because his original texture was just a fake shiny thing so it would have looked ugly with a proper lighting engine

unown models don't show up in hsdraw idk why!!! probably bc there are 26 of them. it works in DAT wizard tho

snorlax has a yellow mout in the viewer but i think that might also be hsdraw dying

a lot of textures with partial transparency like goldeen fins or porygon eyes are very subtly different in melee, i'm not sure if its the melee dev team cleaning them up or if its a case of the originals being compressed and losing some of that in stadium, but regaining it in a more sophisticated engine. cant say but the textures still line up so idc

hey remember what i said about unown? its not even differently colored so i dont have to change it anyway

clefairy is the only pokeball pokemon in melee with unique textures for its shiny form, and i have to be specific because some are not in melee (like gyrados) and some are not from pokeballs (like jigglypuff)

Pokemon: Shiny vs. Default, 001-003

Okay I guess we’re doing this now, let’s talk about Pokemon default forms vs. shiny forms. I’ll be using the Home images for most of these comparisons, because it puts them all in the same artstyle, and eliminates sprite differences.

I’ll be going through in Pokedex Order, and doing whole evolutionary lines together, and hopefully I’ll keep up with it.

Let’s start with the best Gen I starter for actually playing Gen I, Bulbasaur.

Default wins. The teal looks significantly better than the pale lime, and the more vibrant bulb helps.

Now for Ivysaur.

Going with default again, for similar reasons. Hell, I think the gap is actually wider for Ivysaur, because the shiny one loses the red eyes.

Time for Venusaur.

Third verse, same as first. Yeah, the default still looks better. However, the eyes being yellow rather than orange does help the shiny’s case here, largely because I’m a sucker for yellow eyes.

In most cases, we’d be done now, but this is a Gen I starter, so actually there’s more!

First up, one of the worst Megas in terms of design, Mega Venusaur.

Yup, that sure is Venusaur with some more leaves and a flower on its forehead. Also this time I’m actually going to line toward the shiny one, because I feel like being weird. It’s got the red eyes back, the brighter turquoise on the lower leaves makes them stand out more, and the richer brown for the tree branches on its back look better than the muted, pale ones.

And we’ll finish up with The Cooler Mega Venusaur.

Aaaaand it’s back to normal, default better. The added red effect most G-Maxes have looks better with the pink petals and eyes than the orange/yellow. Probably the closest overall, though.

Tomorrow, I’ll be back with the Charmander line, which will be the longest one by a long way. No, I’m not rating every Unown or all the Arceus and Silvally types, or all the Alcremie variants. I don’t have that much time.

hangon actually I JUST realized you already reviewed scraggy line, would love to hear your thoughts on sigilyph or cryogonal instead!

I've always been a big fan of Sigilyph. It's just so weird, having one eye (and two false eyes), a bunch of abstract "wings", and just floating everywhere. It reminds me a bit of Unown, especially because both are based on Nazca lines, to the point where it almost feels like this could works as a Unown evolution if they really tried.

Design-wise, it works really well despite the amount of details in it, mostly thanks to the repetition of the patterning and using the contrast of the black to highlight the most important parts of the body, such as the eyes. This complex patterning also harkens back to the aforementioned Nazca line thing, as well as various types of ancient pottery.

My only complaints about it visually are pretty nitpicky. First, the spikes under the body feel kind of random. They might have been aiming to make a sixth set of something to match the wings, but I feel like it would be better just to drop the spikes and put the vertical lines in the green part like it has up top.

And secondly, color-wise, I feel like the red on the wings could've been green, or the green should've been red, just to reduce the amount of excess accent colors. This doesn't bother me as much as it usually would however, as pottery and other ancient art tends to be very colorful and it's still pretty cohesive despite this.

So yeah, overall, this is a very cool, very abstract Pokemon with a mysterious vibe to it that really stands out visually. Love it.

Also side note, I love the mention of how these things continue to patrol the area where their city used to be, almost like ghosts.

Cryogonal is interesting, but I'll admit, I never was able to really get into this Pokemon for whatever reason. There's some really interesting stuff going on with it, like how it's a carnivore that can turn into steam and revert back in warm temperatures:

But it doesn't leave that much of an impression beyond that. I think the first reason is that it looks weirdly inorganic, and not in a good way like Sigilyph up there. It naturally occurs in nature, yet it looks almost like a Pokemon version of Sinistar or something; except I can't really say "Pokemon version" because it doesn't even look that much like a Pokemon due to how visually busy it is, with lots of details due to the number of rings/layers in the middle of it.

The other reason I think it doesn't stick is that it doesn't have a really clear concept. It's a snowflake, sure, but what makes it unique? It's, uh, very robotic looking, and very... geometric? Like, I'm not sure what they were really going with with the design, which makes it stand out less than if it had a clear direction.

And finally, monotone colors; it's all shades of blue. Even just making the orbs red/yellow or something would've helped to break up the design a bit. In fact, they actually did this with the shiny, raising the question of why they didn't make this the default and the all-blue the shiny:

Also, maybe have some darker color towards the inside and lighter towards the outside (or vice versa) instead of rotating colors with each ring. That would help it read much clearer and faster, as there wouldn't be so many details to get caught up in.

Aside from all that, the mouth also looks weird to me. It should just be a single downward ^ shape, yet it has two extra angles in there. And unlike the eyes, there are too many orbs in the mouth and they don't fit with the shape, so it just doesn't read that well.

If anyone's curious, one of the artists for the New 151 project did an alternate take on Cryogonal that I really like, with a more Pokemon-like feel, a simpler design, and better colors:

So as a whole, I can definitely give Cryogonal points for being interesting and at least unique, but it's too busy visually and has too little focus from a conceptual standpoint to really work for me.

While I’m doing research to write what is happening while Dawn and Prim are in Hisui (and oh boy, there is a lot going on) I got an idea for a protagonist inspired by Gene.

They are Giratina’s Protagonist made for… something. After Giratina noticed that a lot of legendaries make their own protagonists, it decided it also can make one. Problem... it doesn’t know much about humans or pokemons. I think that legends should be able to travel to the Distortion World, so when someone comes for a visit, Giratina decides to ask them all about humans. I thought it would be funny if it’s some of the Unowns that tell Giratina how they created a hero. Somehow Giratina creates a functional human being with their help. How? No one knows, but the protagonist looks normal, so it’s a suckses. Oh! Maybe the hero was created so that Giratina can have a way to look at the world. I mean, it probably has one, but maybe it’s not very good, so it wants a better way. Also it gives its hero some funky portal powers, as a treat. He uses it to steal pokeballs so that he won’t need to buy them. After he gets out of Distortion World he is on the Spear Pillar. He gets down and on the way befriends a shiny Zubat that he catches in a Dream Ball, because why not. I think he wouldn’t be interested in saving the world (at least at first). He doesn’t think that he is needed with so many other heros around, so he mostly just watches from afar while eating popcorn or something. If someone would want to force him to save the world, they would first need to take away his portal abilities. But that isn’t really possible, so he is safe from this burden… Right?

I honestly have no idea what name I can give him. I want it to fit with the whole “naming a hero with some word” but I don’t really know what word that could be. Also, he uses he/they pronouns.

I always find used Pokemon games really interesting, and a couple years ago I bought a used copy of diamond that I never actually got around to erasing the file on. So I'm gonna make a big, long post about everything interesting on it

So the first thing that probably jumps out is that the game is in spanish. A couple months before I bought this, I bought a spanish copy of Pokemon emerald to do some arbitrary code execution that worked differently depending on region. I wanted shiny deoxys but I never got around to that. And I would need a spanish gen 4 game to transfer up from that copy of emerald.

The next thing of note is that whoever RICARDO is, they were clearly pretty dedicated to this game at one point, given the playtime and dex number.

The pc boxes are interesting. First of all, every. single. one. has the ocean background. There's also none of them with names along the lines of "box 1." Several are named ".........." There are some others based off level that seem to have gotten disorganized at some point, probably when ricardo was moving Pokemon off this card before selling it. For example, this bibarel may be above level 30, but there's also a box for above level 50, and that would seem to make more sense for it.

I didn't count but I think they caught every unown, cause I see a lot of them in these boxes. Most of the Pokemon in here just look like Pokemon caught from the wild, with a few exceptions which I'll get to. I think ricardo tried to complete the Dex but never finished. They have 97 caught in the sinnoh dex, 179 caught in the national dex, and 279 seen in the national dex.

There were a few rare Pokemon left behind, but they look pretty hacked.

"Huevos" translates to "eggs" but that's clearly not what's in this box. But what I did find were 5 eggs elsewhere in the pc. I hatched 3 of them and they were drifloon, so I'm pretty sure I know what the other two are. Perhaps ricardo was trying to masuda method for a shiny, but of that's the case they must have moved the foreign parent cause I don't see any Pokemon from other regions. Or maybe they were just trying to get more cause drifloon is KINDA rare.

A few more oddities about this pc. First of all there was this pidgey. There were a few others like it, and given that it's from a "lugar lejano" (faraway place), and has Ricardo, not all caps as the ot, I think it's pretty clear ricardo traded these in from their own copy of hgss, probably in exchange for good Pokemon they were trying to move. This isn't that interesting on its own, but what captured my attention was

1. The fact that this pidgey is from 2005, meaning ricardo's ds clock was pretty wrong for whatever reason

2. The fact that this pidgey specifically was given a nickname for some reason. Love that tbh

Last little thing about the pc, I found a skuntank holding a fire stone and an anorith holding the tm for fire blast, which seem like oddly specific items for them to hold.

Now for the hall of fame. There were 19 entries with the first being in 2009 and the last being as recent as 2015 (for context, I bought this game in 2017). They're in chronological order too, so I think the dates are accurate, unlike edgar's catch date. Here's the team they beat the game with. Interestingly, the staraptor and roserade were left behind.

The 2015 entry is an outlier, as all the other entries are gradually over 2009-2012. It also must have been around summer 2011 when ricardo got a gameshark or something, cause a bunch of shinies start appearing then. There's no trace of most of them in the box, but I did find the swampert and lugia.

There were a lot of entries with really interesting teams, like this one. There was one with an unown w, one with a level 100 shiny quilava, and another with a skuntank that I think is the same one holding the fire stone.

Additionally, what I found interesting is that every entry is a combo of Pokemon that only shows up once. Except this one, which shows up several times. Initially it had a fearow instead of latios.

And that's about it.

Making Up For Lost Time

I’ve wanted to write some blog posts that were larger compared to some of my latest ones. But I was too busy with important schoolwork. It didn’t help that the pollution in my country grew to the point where I couldn’t focus on the things I loved that weren’t Pokémon.

Thankfully, things have gotten better for me. For one, some close acquaintances are actually doing something to combat the air quality problems and the people who cause them. I’ve also recovered both physically and mentally. Now I can go back to working on the things I couldn’t do all those weeks ago.

It’s time to make up for all the time I lost!

JULY 17TH

I finally found all the orange stakes in Pokémon Violet! When I went to find the shrine for the next legendary Pokémon, I found out that it was in a completely different location.

And when I touched it, a Pokémon that WASN’T Chi-Yu popped out.

What is this thing, and why doesn’t its fur match up with the color of the shrine/stakes?

After one Master Ball, I managed to add it to my collection.

If it has something to do with swords, then why doesn’t Chien-Pao lower every other Pokémon’s Attack?

JULY 18TH

I spent most of the time I had for the day collecting shiny Pokémon.

I first went back in time to Hisui so I could trade this shiny Sylveon I caught in a Max Raid battle for another shiny Pokémon I haven’t gotten yet. After HOURS of waiting and haggling, I was eventually able to trade it for a shiny Yanma.

And with Yanma, the Yanma line has finally been completed.

Before I moved on to the next game, I had to release another Pokémon. And when I did, something happened.

Apparently, Pokémon you release in this game leave behind gifts for you. I’ve never seen this behavior since I never release any of the Pokémon I have. (Outside of specific situations...)

At least it was something useful.

After all of that, I moved onto Pokémon Brilliant Diamond Version to trade the Drapion I had. Thankfully, I found someone who was willing to trade something good to me. (Whatever that Pokémon is, you’ll just have to visit the Shiny Collection to find out.)

I was also fortunate to fight in a few battles. Naturally, I won them all. Even after 2 months, I’m still the best!

I should draw with my stylus more. (If only it wasn’t so terrible.)

I also managed to get another shiny Pokémon in a trade. The second shiny Unown I’ve ever owned!

It’s not an S. But it’ll do for now. (I could catch shiny versions of the other Unown and create a new Unown laboratory. But I think I’ll save that for later.)

JULY 20TH

I was kind of busy with schoolwork that day. I battled someone in Violet Version and I managed to get over whatever I was worried about the previous day. I even finished that assignment I mentioned earlier.

JULY 21ST

I managed to improve my battle skills. I feel like I can make smarter decisions now that my brain is getting the oxygen it needs.

I got a Charizard through an event. It has a Dark Tera Type. (Although, I don’t know why anyone would change it to THAT...)

I’m not sure WHY it has my name registered to it. (It was supposed to be someone else’s.)

I guess this makes Charizard the first event Pokémon I’ve caught that has a Classic Ribbon. (I should take him back to Sinnoh with me so I can win him even more ribbons.)

To improve my brain’s capabilities, I went to the academy to take on the Battle class.

I’m pretty sure the Treasure Hunt ended a month ago. (I hope I don’t cause any trouble by bringing a legendary Pokémon to this class.)

Then this class could become on par with the classes at Earl’s Pokémon Academy.

But it doesn’t completely restore their HP. (Most of the time...)

If they feel that way, they should have gone with a Pokémon that was right for the job.

The midterms are here already? I guess this class really is the one I excel at the most.

To be honest, an indoor area would be a more ideal place to hold a test like this.

A perfect A+. And THIS is what I get for it. (Captures the education system perfectly.)

Time to take on the last few lessons.

But will Auto-Battles increase a Pokémon’s specific stats?

Hopefully that hacker isn’t someone who comes to this school on a daily basis...

I wish the lessons in this class would go over stuff like this. Pokémon Stadium 2 went over battle basics in a much better way.

But what about Triple Battles? Or Sky Battles?

But they’ll be no good if their stats weren’t trained properly.

Eventually, I managed to complete the final exam and pass the class. Now that I’m done with this one, it’s off to Art.

JULY 22ND

When I was about to exit my dorm room, the map stated that Penny was somewhere in the main hall.

I mean, that WAS the plan for the admins, wasn’t it?

It HAS been a few months since they’ve reformed. Life should have improved for them in that time.

That should cover the previous week. I’d focus on battling more. But I want to go back to drawing. It’s been so long since I’ve sketched anything...
