Hello all!!

Hebden Bridge Discord Server is planning to host a fic writing/art event for April! I have made a prompt card, feel free to share far and wide :D I will make a collection on A03 and share nearer the time where pieces can be shared as and when throughout April. No pressure at all - do as many or as few as you like!

Rules:

The event is for ANY ship that involves characters played by Nicola Walker or Sarah Lancashire

The collection will be open throughout April 2024

Any rating you like, but please tag clearly and add trigger warnings if neccessary

not sure if this counts as an AU but.. thinking about the Per Aspera crew as horror game bosses like.. you are wandering through a forested mountain range and you know somethings wrong because the forest shouldn't be this eerily silent, this devoid of life, and then you hear the crash of falling trees and there is a hand that is half your size glowing golden in the night and it is grabbing you and its claws are digging into your flesh and you see the spines running down the golden arm that is far too long as it lifts you over a crater in mountain, over a coiled, serpentine thing with a visage that is not of this world, and if you look closely you can see the shape of a child curled at the centre of the thing, golden hair reflecting the glow of the creature and if you listen closely you can hear her sobbing, 'Don't hurt me, I don't want to do this'. you are sailing through the astral sea when you see an ephemeral, resplendent spelljammer cutting through the starry waters and you rejoice because you have been lost on the seas for so so long, so you board the ship looking for help, supplies, anything, and you are greeted by a blue fire genasi (you wonder, do those even exist? but you can't get off the ship now because where else will you go?) and she tells you she is the captain of this ship but as far as you can tell there is no crew on board, and if she is not appearing right behind you from a trapdoor you've never noticed she is always in the engine room 'fixing the ship' even though the ship seems to be sailing perfectly fine ('Where are we going?' you ask her once and she doesn't even turn to look at you, 'Don't worry about it') and if you are ever so unlucky as to damage the ship in any way, you begin to catch flashes of red and orange out of the corner of your eye, a fire genasi wearing the woman's face who whispers at you with hollow, angry eyes 'Don't you fucking dare hurt my ship'. you are sailing through the astral sea when you see a rotting, decaying spelljammer, so badly damaged it's barely moving although you have to wonder how it's even staying afloat at all, and out of some morbid curiosity you climb on board and the deck of the ship is in no better shape than the hull, the marks of hard-fought battle - scars in the wood from sharp blades and arcane energies, stains of blood and oil splattered about - still fresh but you know time doesn't pass on the astral sea so who knows how long ago this all took place, and as you climb below decks you start to notice the writings on the walls, pieces of parchment nailed to every surface and connected with fraying, rotting threads, or words etched directly into the wood, the deep gouges barely readable, and you start to hear the creaking and clanking of rusted machinery slowly moving about and you turn a corner to see a figure standing in a room facing the wall, slowly scratching yet more of that unintelligible writing into the bones of the ship, and it turns as the rusted dented mechanite stares at you with eyes ablaze and he asks 'Who are you? Where is my crew?' as sparks of arcane lightning begins to arc through the room. you are running through a feywild forest and you know, even without the figure chasing you, that you have made a horrible mistake, you should have known better, should have been more careful, should have kept your impulses in check, and now you are being chased through an unfamiliar forest and the figure, the Hunter pursuing you knows this realm like the back of his hand, knows every tree and shrub and vine that is slithering up to grasp at your ankles, and you glance back desperately to catch any glimpse of your pursuer but there is no pursuer, he has hidden himself with some arcane trick or some innate power or just the knowledge that this realm is his home, and you hear his voice even though you cannot see him as he cries out 'You should not have hurt my family. Prepare to face the Hunter of Hundkiln'

can i ask why you don't like xingyun? /gen not a shipper myself but i'm just curious since a lot of chongyun lovers love that ship, i've never seen anyone NOT like it

rant warning by the way, I accidentally got more and more annoyed writing this 😬

im gonna be honest the number one reason is because i see it everywhere

the first effect of this is that content depicting xingqiu and chongyun in a nonromantic manner get tagged as xing/yun, which is annoying to me. you can draw 2 characters together in a nonromantic manner and you don't have to tag the ship guys. it's real it's called being friends. the second effect is that there's never any content with chongyun and Other Characters. people are so hung up on him and xingqiu that chongyun almost never exists without xingqiu. like you might notice i have a tag for chongyun and hu tao (mostly platonic) stuff except that there are only 7-8 posts tagged with that, because although the "exorcist and girl who can see ghosts" dynamic would be so cool, nobody seems to think abt that bc almost everything with chongyun includes xingqiu. this also goes for chongyun and xiangling (who canonically makes him his cooling popsicles) and like random other characters whom he Could interact with and be friends with (ayaka and him is a crack friendship i talked about once, and ofc chongyun and xiao). i hate it. xingqiu got his mr worldwide arc with venti and albedo please depict chongyun alone with other friends (it literally doesn't even have to be romantic). of course, this might just be a separate problem that I'm conflating with the ship, but it annoys me. i'm not focusing on xingqiu's side because although fan content for like idk him and yun jin? him and hu tao? albedo? is also super rare, at least that stuff exists in canon.

the second reason is because xingqiu's prankster attitude towards chongyun annoys me

yeah i love my little shit son but idk, it's just annoying when people make him feed chongyun spicy food, play pranks on him that cost chongyun Something (losing face, wasted time, frustration) idk. i guess i don't like that his condition isn't taken seriously. i don't think it's bad to have friends who pull your leg but at least not in a malicious way? like iirc he's implied to have triggered chongyun's yang energy overflows at least a couple times, and it's like . why. why is it played for jokes the kid literally passes out. "(He) needs more practice. Especially… with eating spicy food, haha." bro please do not !! don't trigger his condition just for kicks! xingqiu's other pranks also annoy me, given that i hate being tricked, so some of this might be projection or smth idk, but like idk you can give him good suggestions for where to demon hunt instead of making up shit and then going after him to make up for any costs. it's just annoying i think chongyun gets annoyed but then later forgives him, as friends are, but i cannot imagine them getting together like this. unless it's toxic idk . if they're friends i can give a pass to the pranks and stuff but in a romantic relationship i don't think i could see this kind of dynamic being a good one

As a Black person who's been in nerd spaces for almost 2 decades now, the whole "I've never seen fandom be so negative before!" is starting to get on my nerves. Its always been this way, it's just that now you're on the other side of it or you can't ignore it anymore.

I was there when ff.net writers tried to run Black fic writers off of those C3 communities back in the day. I was there in the Gaia Online days of "I don't accept characters played by people with dark skinned avatars", being proudly displayed on Barton Town threads. I was also there when congoers complained about Black people "ghetto-fying" con spaces. I had to delete my old blog after being branded the "Sally Donovan of the Sherlock Fandom" .

Yes, getting dogpiled and hated on because of some kid's false moral outrage can be super disheartening. Yeah, the community is much bigger and chaotic than we could have ever imagined. YES, social media and the general state of the world is affecting how we cope with things mentally and we should all strive to be kinder to each other.

But some of y'all are STRAIGHT UP LYING about how internet fandom used to be and how much you participated in it. Your old forum account with your "anti-yaoi" sticker and banner signature are still out there, you know. Some of you here STILL use the same names you did 20 years later and you're just as guilty as the kids you complain about now. IF NOT MORE.

I’m not sure if this is the originator for Greskrendtregk shortening his name to Gres in beta canon, or if this is following another beta canon novel’s decision to do it. I’ve also seen fic authors shorten his name this way - not sure if it’s because they’re following beta canon or that Greskrendtregk is a lot to type out.

But!

As a person with a long name that starts with a G that absolutely no monolingual English-speaker can get right on the first try I hate this decision. It’s not that humans physically can’t say Ktarian names - Samantha has obviously figured it out and can say it. So it’s more that awkward balking that happens when people just don’t want to try, that annoying little laugh of “oh haha, that’s quite a name/ I’ll never be able to keep that straight” or the immediate insistence of “Well I’m going to call you [nickname].” Greskrendtregk has clearly met that multiple times, and just decided its easier to forward an alternative, a nickname, a shorter version, which I get because its tiring! I have also made the decision of “I guess I will simply be a different person at work” after spending weeks correcting everyone. I get it but it doesn’t make me any less mad about the phenomenon.

The episodes with Ensign Ro fighting to get her name said correctly in TNG touch on this as well, the (because its sci-fi) human-centrism and, more importantly, the (because its sci-fi written by a specific make-up of people) English-language-centrism that casually strips people of their names and the personal and cultural import they have.

Nozel x Vanessa surprised me too, to be perfectly honest. I think I mentioned this somewhere in the bingo game so I apologize if I am repeating myself, but Vanessa is definitely one of those characters I could see happy with a lot of different characters (and different types of characters), so I like and/or could see lots of different ships with her in them. I could also see her perfectly content as the unmarried fun, 'wine aunt' of all her Black Bulls nieces and nephews too. It's really up to her and what life she would choose for herself! (Or, I suppose, that the author would choose for her. As Vanessa's love life hasn't played much of a role in the story, I doubt we'll get much of a resolution on that point in the canon, but you never know... 😂) Vanzel/Nozessa may not my all-time favourite ship with Vanessa in it, but it definitely could be fun! [Vanessa x [Fill In The Tsundere] is just such an entertaining dynamic in general! Really fun stuff!! 😁] I'm glad you liked what I had to say about them. I really have the fandom to thank for helping me see the possibilities of that ship! 💕

I'm certainly no expert on Nozel x Vanessa fanfictions by any means 😅--I've really only dabbled in the ship a little bit, but here are a few I really enjoyed! (Listed in alphabetical order below the cut)

Hurdles by Oighear (on AO3) -- Domestic fluff about Nozel and Vanessa trying to assemble baby furniture. Really all the warm and fuzzies! [I've really enjoyed all of the Vanessa/Nozel fics I've read by this author, but this is probably my favourite! It was just so adorable! 🥰]

Poetry Hour at the Bookshop by @crazedstoryteller (on AO3) -- This was one of the very first Vanessa x Nozel fanfiction I read, and it brought the biggest smile to my face! Just fun, funny, and fluffy in a modern AU (Also really shows off Nozel's tsundere side and gives Asta his moment to really shine with an absolutely inspired poem about potatoes 😂).

Night of Vows by Vilandel (on AO3. Rated T) -- This was a great story even if the premise didn't exactly fit with my personal headcanons of how I imagine their relationship. I loved the depiction of vulnerable Nozel (and gosh he's such a tsun too), and Vanessa comforting him. Also, the traditional Clover Kingdom vows the author came up with are just beautiful! 💖

Sugar, Spice and... by succulentsunrise (on AO3) -- It's about Vanessa and Nozel's first kiss with each other, and the author gives them a refreshingly healthy dynamic for a secret romance. Very cute! 💕

I also loved this one @lyranova wrote on request about Yami and Charlotte discovering Nozel and Vanessa are dating! (It has a little bit of YamiChar and some great Yami and Vanessa friendship in it too!) 🥰

Finally, I'm not sure if this one is actually Vanessa x Nozel or not because it's really more focused on Vanessa giving up her feelings for Yami, but there is an excellent moment between her and Nozel towards the end that is really what first endeared their friendship (or the idea of their friendship). I don't think I would have been as open to the idea of them as a romantic ship without having read this, so I'm mentioning it here. It's also very well-written, and I really like the author's insights into Vanessa's character. Little Birdie by S.C. Tucker on FFN. (Honestly one of my favourite Vanessa fanfictions in general too! 💗)

To be honest, I think what ever they had was platonic. That kind of uncanny valley of woah wait I'm realizing you're a living thinking entity and just starting to come to grips with that on Ace's side. Because I really was picturing her in like early 20s getting the job and so in over her head. If there was a spark for her of ever feeling something romantic it would've been pretty much stomped to bits while seeing Bonnie have to go through all of the updates/personality changes. Like at that point you're just like holy shit my friend is in deep deep distress and I can't help him

I think if things hadn't ended the way they did for Bonnie, if management had listened and Bonnie was still around to live freely, then there could have been the potential there. Like in her 30s they could've given it a go

But then it's also that really sad shit of would've could've should've where who knows if Ace would have even stayed at Fazbear had it not been for what happened to Bonnie

So! Extremely long winded no, but if they did it would have been the most sad shit ever (if you're looking for some real deep pain with your romance haha)

Humans entering space and realizing we are so small. We are mice compared to these giant races with their advanced machinery and technologies and experiences beyond us- except that we're humans. And our engineers dive into the new tech and once we learn the principles we also soon realize how Inefficient everything is. Their "microchips" are the size of cars, their storage drives are basically buildings, and they somehow store less data than ours. So, human companies take advantage, and tech starts rolling out. Massive and there's a lot of wasted space so that it can be managed with larger hands/pincers/claws/tentacles, but also so much more efficient than anything the galaxy has seen before.

Human technicians start hopping ships and upkeeping the general maintenance, the stuff that most aliens put off or don't notice because they never access the crevices of their ships. As human companies become more popular and lead the tech world in everything from warp cores to game stations ("it's so compact! How are the graphics so good?" Says a 60' tall grimbleback, holding a new VR headset that has all of its components included because it's so BIG by our tech standards), soon many things have accessibility ports for humans to be able to use as well. This means that these shiprats hoping ship to ship cause such a huge improvement in everything running smoothly, and there's a huge downtick in pests on ships because those "pests" are not only big enough and aggressive enough to bite a pitbull or a person in half, they're invasive to so many planets and humans hate nothing more than dog killing planet overrunning monsters.

All the while, from the Aliens perspective, humans are an elusive race that don't fraternize much with them. You almost never see a human as most places aren't exactly safe for the little things to run around in. They do export so much stuff though, and the custodial staff at the Central Galactic Outpost insists that there's more humans around than any other race if you just know where to look.

And sure it's somewhat known that some of the little daredevils hop ships and help out in exchange for room and board, usually without permission, but that can't be that common, can it?

Maybe your ship is running better this cycle ever since you stopped at the last station, that just means that tuneup was better than you thought. And maybe for some reason that program you were working on last night is finished when you wake up, but you're so tired maybe you finished it before you passed out. Somehow that faulty light in the galley has fixed itself as well, which is odd, but maybe the Engineer finally got to it. You'd know if there was someone else on your ship.

Right?

... You leave a little bowl of berries out as a thank you, just in case. You're not sure what humans like but you've heard they have a sweet tooth.

Law - wearing glasses

You had hid your glasses from Law at first, worried that he would find you less attractive, but when he sees the glasses case in your room, he begs you to put them on.

You two have been relaxing in bed together, and innocent kisses quickly escalate to heavy petting. You're straddling him, rocking your hips against his. You start to think you might cum without even taking your clothes off, but Law's firm grip on your hips stops your movement.

“Can you do something for me?” he asks, leaning over to rummage in the bedside table drawer. When he pulls out your glasses case, you go to protest but he speaks before you can open your mouth

“Babe just put them on for me. I want to see them on,” he says. You haven't noticed yet, but he's already hard thinking about what you'd look like. You groan and take them from his hand.

“I don't get why you want me to put them on. It's not like I'm any hotter with them,” you say as you push them onto your face. Law goes to respond, but after seeing you in glasses he freezes. You begin to feel self-conscious because of Law's lack of response. However, you're shocked when you reach your hand up to take off your glasses, and Law shouts out ‘no’.

You're initially confused about his outburst but Law is quick to recover and pulls you in a kiss. His tongue pushes into your mouth against yours and his hands begin to wander your body. When he pulls back for air, he explains himself.
