Me seeing mentions of blot and Bucky and I think. I should actually write that. Because I do have AU thoughts about their dynamic. Guy and his “uncle” both of whom have some slight annoyance with one another but are United in hatred towards mark and broadside.
Once again they’re all throwing rocks at him. The only human in a world with company mandated fursonas /hj

7th April 1767 saw the birth in Torphichen of Henry Bell.
Not a well known name to many but Bell would make his name by building the the paddle steamer PS Comet and, in 1812, using it to run Europe’s first commercially viable passenger steamboat service on the River Clyde.
Bell was educated in the local Parish school at Torphichen his family were well known at the time as millwrights, builders and engineers.
After schooling he spent time learning trades as a stonemason, Millwright and Model ship modeler, he was something of a visionary and a jack of all trades, it was another trade, engineering that he ended up excelling.
He became fascinated by the then experimental technology and potential of steam propelled ships. He corresponded with and may have assisted the American steamship pioneer Robert Fulton who, in 1807, introduced a steamboat service in New York. However, Bell failed to persuade the Admiralty to take any interest in his ideas about steam propulsion. While continuing to experiment and speculate, he and his wife moved in 1807 to Helensburgh where they ran an inn and superintended the public baths.
He must have been bored for as well as doing the two jobs in Helensburgh Henry was still tinkering with his steam engines, and he commissioned a Port Glasgow shipbuilder to build a 30-ton wooden paddle steamer with a 3hp engine. He named her Comet after a spectacular comet that had appeared the previous year. In August 1812, after a trial voyage from Port Glasgow to the Broomielaw and then back down to Greenock, during which the boat made 5 knots against a headwind and dramatically cut the usual journey time, Bell inaugurated a regular passenger service between Glasgow, Greenock and Helensburgh. No longer did ferries need to be so dependent upon wind and tide. This was the first commercial steam passenger service in Europe.
Lengthened and improved, the Comet then ran a service to Oban and Fort William via the Crinan Canal, but in 1820 she was shipwrecked off Oban. A successor Comet sank after a collision with considerable loss of life. Bell’s pioneering venture was soon superseded technically and eclipsed by rivals but he had shown the way.
Bell was not a successful businessman and ended his days in poverty, dependent upon a public subscription on his behalf, supported by Thomas Telford among others, and an annual stipend from the trustees of the Clyde Navigation.
He died in aged 62 and is buried in Rhu Kirkyard at Gare Loch, Argyll and Bute, a grand statue of him marks his tomb, there is also an Obolisk monument to Henry Bell on the Clyde at Helensburgh where there is also a JD Wetherspoon bar.

So Sweetheart just rocketed straight into my top 10 horror movies of all time.
In summary: a woman shipwrecks alone on a deserted island, only to find herself hunted by a monster. Credit JD Dillard for amazing writing, directing, and producing and Kiersey Clemons for acting one of the best horror survivors I’ve ever seen.
There’s no time wasted on unnecessary information: you’re given what you need to know in a masterclass of Show, Don’t Tell. There’s no wasted space, either. Clemons’ character has (by the nature of being on a deserted island) an extremely limited arsenal of survival tools, which she uses to the fullest, making smart choices throughout. Of course, she’s no action hero, which means that even her cleverness doesn’t provide real safety.
The familiar hallmarks of the survival film are there, as well as slasher/monster movie tropes, but they’re played out so well that familiarity has no impact on their effectiveness. The movie is absolutely gorgeous, partly due to the filming location and partly due to cinematographic choices. There’s some social commentary present, and it’s very thought-provoking (remember, some anvils need to be dropped). The monster is a damn fine one!
Basically, if you’re looking for something to watch for an hour and a half, this is a really good choice. To say any more would be to spoil the movie’s best moments, so I won’t go on. Just...go watch it!

something i think about a lot is how much Jack’s youthfulness would have actually worked against him the younger he was ( and one thing i’m very glad about in dmtnt is that they did run with a very boyish young Jack aesthetic and matched it with jump street era JD ), and how i expect he spent the majority of his adolescence and twenties constantly trying to make himself look older so that he would be taken more seriously by the grizzled old sailors and hardened pirates he was surrounded by. we know that Teague dismisses Jack on numerous occasions in TPOF by calling him boy, despite his being 20 years old during the Shipwreck chapters and therefore a grown man, and that this leaks into Jack’s own critical inner voice during the rest of the story. we also know that he becomes a captain of a merchant vessel at the tender age of 25, and i imagine it’s his time in the EITC in particular that really makes him desperate to look older so that he can be taken seriously by the men he has to lead on board the Wench --- particularly as he never managed to break out and make something of himself when he was back on Shipwreck.
facial hair is likely one of the first key ways in which Jack tried to achieve this --- though i disagree with TPOF canon that Jack can grow a full beard, i really don’t think he can --- and then it extended to the outfit and the hat and the kohl and particularly post-TPOF became all of the stuff that he wears to create Captain Jack Sparrow. it creates not just a facade to hide behind but a way of looking older and therefore having more authority with his crew as a result --- something which would have been very important in those few years after TPOF since Hector was his first mate and this was a man much older and also more experienced than him, so Jack would certainly feel as though he needs to prove himself on some level ( you can also infer that a reason Barbossa incited a mutiny was due to feeling threatened by this younger captain and that Jack may have believed his age had something to do with how easily the mutiny seemed to come about ).
naturally this is something that becomes less of a problem the older Jack gets, with the anxiety of aging soon becoming the issue lmao, but the other point is that when you strip back the hat and kohl and outfit, even at the age he is within movie canon, one of the most striking things is how much younger Jack looks without it all

Jonathan Dickinson State Park as an Outdoor Adventure Destination
Tumblr media
With more than 35 years of experience in sales and customer service, Matthew Beckerle does stock counter sales at Speonk Lumber in Speonk, New York. Previously, Matthew Beckerle also served as an assistant biologist at Jonathan Dickinson State Park (JD) in Florida. The largest state park in Southeast Florida, JD has 16 distinct natural communities. It is a great site to explore through the bike and hike trails or by the Loxahatchee River. Bikers can enjoy paved bike lanes or off-road bike trails, while hiking trails lead through scrub forests, upland lakes, and coastal sandhills. There is also an area dedicated to equestrian. At Loxahatchee River, visitors can do canoeing, kayaking, or boating. Anglers may also fish from boats or along the river bank. JD also offers historical chronicles. Visitors can go back to the park’s World War II history when it became a secret training camp; or the story of Jonathan Dickinson, the Quaker merchant who was shipwrecked along with his family and sought refuge at the area. JD also offers ranger-guided tours to the homestead of Trapper Nelson, who is known as the Wild Man of the Loxahatchee. Displays and exhibits are also available at the Elsa Kimbell Environmental Education and Research Center.
