of all dreams: you ─ songs of love & devotion. ⠀⠀⠀⠀pre-boyfriend!shisui, the laughter of promises.
Tumblr media
PRE-BOYFRIEND!SHISUI who loves to hear your voice. whether in the first rays of the day or in the last stars of the night, shisui was enchanted by your voice like a child is with the first snow. with sparkling eyes, attentively capturing all your pronunciation and all your intonations, shisui could only be amazed by you. with what nectar were you planted? with what tears were you watered? with what excellence were you harvested? your words seemed like a lake of serenity covered with water lilies so docile that they sheltered shisui in the creation of a new religion. each word of yours was blessed by the gods and all the stars made sure to guide your thoughts without any rush. and no matter what you said, no matter how you said it, the truth is that shisui would always fall asleep in your charm whenever he heard your sweet, gentle voice. ‘tell me that story about your teacher again and how she locked you out of the room. oh! don’t forget to tell me what you want for your birthday. and when you can come over for dinner!’
PRE-BOYFRIEND!SHISUI who guarantees your safety in the strongest storms. when the wind roared loudly and voices scolded incessantly; when the rain attacked without mercy and memories lashed your ears; when the thunder mixed with lies and the storm on the street found its way to your heart, shisui was there for you. with his hands on your face, in your ears, in your own hands, shisui tried his best to calm you down. gifted with intense patience and cosmic calm, shisui silenced all the friction that left you defeated, managing to silence the screams in your mind with small improvised melodies and making the bright lightning the light that guided you. ‘i know, i know. look at me. you’re fine. breathe in… it’s okay, i’m here with you. exhale… i won’t let anything happen to you. just close your eyes and remember that you’re here in this moment. everything’s okay.’
PRE-BOYFRIEND!SHISUI who invites you to watch the sunrise on the summer solstices. neither of you remember how this tradition started, but it hardly mattered. every year, almost at the end of june, shisui blushed slightly when he said goodbye to you with the promise to see you in a few hours. he didn’t know why his cheeks got hot, he also didn’t know why his heart was fluttering every time he heard your confirmation — but there was something in that custom of yours that made shisui shrink in an attempt to contain his happiness. although for many that day was something quite normal, shisui saw it as a refuge from the world. just you, him and the beginning of a new cycle, the beginning of a new promise of eternity. ‘i just arrived at the village and remembered what day it will be tomorrow and… do you want to go to the viewpoint? watch the sunrise? just me and you and all the hope that is yet to be born.’
PRE-BOYFRIEND!SHISUI who gets confused when he feels your touch. he knew it was childish. he knew perfectly well that his reaction was only comical for onlookers and totally embarrassing for himself. but he couldn’t help it. every time you touched him, even if it wasn’t intentional, you managed to transmit a bit of your warmth to shisui, warming him up inside, comforting him with a small fire of your essence. star particles from your soul were trapped in shisui whenever you touched him, and in those particles shisui could hear chanting, prayers, infinite voices that repeated the same words in a cycle of eternal devotion. 'i’m yours. i’m waiting for you. i won’t move on without you. you and me.’
PRE-BOYFRIEND!SHISUI who is constantly looking for a place just for you. we could say that shisui was looking for privacy. in such a small village, with so many people enjoying its beauty, it was rare to find a more isolated, unknown, forgotten place. in all the parks where shisui almost said the difficult words, there were traces of copied promises. in the various alleys that held your laughter, there was a wide variety of accumulated secrets. in every place, there was always something that turned your special moments into something extremely vulgar, as banal as a dog chasing its tail. that’s why shisui wanted a place just for you. a place that was devoid of memories and stories. a place that gave itself to you, ready to be welcomed into your complicity. ‘i discovered a new park nearby. it’s small, but it’s so cozy. it has a little greenhouse next to it and they let you go pick strawberries there. and a lake! it also has a little lake and i thought of you right away. do you want to go there with me tomorrow? just the two of us?’
PRE-BOYFRIEND!SHISUI who feels safe in your smiles. it was funny the way shisui loved you and didn’t even realize it. in your smiles, shisui saw constellations, eternal promises of a cosmic devotion, dozens of fairy tales that used you and him as models for happiness. when you spoke, when you liked what you were saying or hearing, shisui could perfectly distinguish what made him fall in love with you: it was your easy smile, the little lines you created on your face because you couldn’t contain your joy. your natural beauty, blessed by all the stardust and drawn with the most divine features, was what held shisui captive — and it was what left him at peace. with you, with your happiness and kindness, shisui felt good, safe, knowing perfectly well that nothing in this world could take him away from you. ‘i think you have no idea of your impact on my life. you’re not only my closest friend, you’re also the only friendship i truly want to keep. i don’t mind losing everyone, but if i lose you… i wouldn’t be the man i am anymore.’
PRE-BOYFRIEND!SHISUI who doesn’t want to scare you, but he really likes you a lot. inhale… shisui had known you for more years than he could count and with each year shisui could name all the times he had fallen in love with you. exhale… shisui knew it was love almost immediately — it was a want, an attachment, a need that he had never felt before and that he knew perfectly well he would never feel again, not for anyone else. inhale… shisui had all your stories running in a cinematic marathon in his heart, highlighting every shared laugh and invoking every exchange of glances. exhale… shisui couldn’t tell if it was mutual, or if you already knew his feelings, but none of that mattered at that moment. shisui was now decided. shisui was going to confess to you. ‘i have something to tell you, but i want you to promise me one thing. please, listen to me until the end. i like you, a lot. i know we have a very strong friendship and that i’m probably ruining it right now, but i want you to know this. i like you. that’s it. please, don’t leave.’

You shivered softly, eyes closing as he covered the barely there distance between you two, one hand resting on your nape and other on your jaw. The red hue of Sharingan glinted in the dark of his room, the other light being the soft illumination of Moon. Your breaths turned heavy when he leaned in, and your neck tilted automatically, breath knocking out of your chest as your lips met.
His right hand tightened on your nape as his lips gently claimed yours, other hand trailing down your spine gently. "Breath, Love." He breathed in your mouth, making you take a ragged breath in. He claimed your lips once again, the plush of your lips dragging against his chapped but soft lips again and again, your nose bumping lightly.
He kept kissing you softly and deeply, his hand holding on the small of your back as he pressed you flush against him, your arms automatically coiling around his neck, and you kissed him back with same fervour, holding onto his neck as the low rumbles of his chest made you weak to the knees.

I want to love you in a way that consumes me.
my love is melancholic, nothing but condemnation and unworthy offerings of devotion. I want to love you, regardless would I survive you or tear myself down with my fingers clawing at my veins, waiting for your saving hands. I want to love you selflessly, but I am a penitent, I am guilty, and I take and I take and I take until there's nothing left. I will ruin you as how I'll ruin myself. I want to tear your chest open, crack your sternum and crawl into the cradle of your ribs, curl around your beating heart, flow through your veins and blanket your nerves. in your arms, I am a violent dog. in your arms, I am a docile lover. kiss me, and I would press my lips to your palm, trace every line, the ghost of your veins; carve my heart bit by bit with your name in my breath until I drown and drip with blood and molten gold, served on a platter for you to take.

The first time Mikoto noticed anything amiss, it was in the bright eyed way Itachi described his new friend, Shisui. Shisui was four years older and already a genin (which she knew meant he'd already seen the horrors of the war). She considers briefly that he was simply an imaginary friend, but Itachi had never had any before and she recognizes that name as the current Uchiha prodigy.
Well, crap.
At least Itachi wouldn't be alone and isolated the way she had been.
When she finally meets Shisui, her opinion stays the same. He's a polite boy with eyes far too knowledgeable for a mere nine year old. Her investigation had revealed that he'd not only seen the war, but fought in it, losing his entire genin team in the process. He was later taken on by Inoichi Yamanaka, and remained with him to this day.
She knows, the moment she sees Itachi look at him with those big doe eyes he'd inherited from her, that one day, she'll be fighting tooth and nail to allow him to marry the boy he so obviously loves.
A few months later, a girl stops by asking about Itachi. They're classmates in the Academy, and she was hoping to do their homework together. Watching them work together, she has a brief moment of hope that he's different. Unlike her, he won't know a life of sneaking around, stealing kisses in back alleys to avoid people's judgment. However, she doesn't see the same light she does when he talks about Shisui, and she resigns herself to her fate.
Itachi would not be forced into a marriage against his will the way she had been. Not as long as she was alive to stop it.
(Not that she hadn't come to love Fugaku in her own way, but she'd never love him the way she'd loved Kushina once. A long time ago.)
As Itachi ages, she realizes she's right. The light he held when talking about his new friend never dims, and in fact grows stronger and stronger. All she has to do is mention his name, and Itachi will perk up no matter how rough a time he's having. No matter how distracted he is.
She knows he loves Shisui just as much, if not more than, she'd love Kushina, and it hurts her heart to think about the trials he'll face because of it.
When he's fourteen, Itach sits her and Fugaku down at the kitchen table, Sasuke away at the Academy. He seems unusually anxious, and she suspects she knows what this is about. Has been waiting for his day since he was four years old.
"Mother, Father. I-" He starts, hesitating. He glances at them both anxiously before ducking his head so his bangs cover his eyes. She glances at Fugaku, who she suspects also knows what he's trying to say. Itachi swallows. "I'm... gay. I-I don't like girls. Not... not that way."
She smiles warmly at him, considers telling him she's the same but doesn't want to take way from his moment. "That's okay. It doesn't change anything."
Beside her, Fugaku nods. "We still love and support you."
Itachi's shoulders sag in relief as he processes what they've just said. "Thank you." If his eyes look glossier than usual, she pretends not to notice. If her own feel the same, well, hopefully he'd extend the same courtesy.
Four years later on Itachi's eighteenth birthday, she throws the same elaborate clan wide party she always throws despite knowing how much he hates it. It's too loud with too many people, and it overwhelms him, but the elders insist on it. Just like every year, Itachi insists on making himself scarce during it.
This year, Sasuke's genin teammates are here, and she's distracted by all the chaos Naruto brings with him. Just like Kushina all those years ago. The thought warms her heart.
The crash that sounds from her living room a few seconds does not.
A few hours later, even she's overwhelmed with the amount of ass kissing she's had to do among the elders. She steps out onto the backporch, breathing in the warm June air. It wasn't unbearably hot this time of night, and the cool air feels pleasant against her flushed skin.
"-go somewhere else?" She hears Shisui's voice, softer than usual. A short pause later, she hears, "You sure? We can sneak off off to my place. No one will be none the wiser." There's a touch of annoyance in his voice, and she can't blame him. For something that was supposed to be celebrating Itachi's continued existence, the guests aren't paying much attention to him.
"I know," she hears Itachi reply, just as soft. "But this technically my party. I don't want Mother to feel bad if she notices our absence."
She peeks around the corner and finds the boys entwined on the porch, Itachi's head against Shisui's shoulder. Their fingers resting together between them. She considers coming out of hiding and telling them to go, that she'd distract anyone looking for them, but she finds herself rooted in place, feeling like she wasn't meant to be hearing this. Seeing this.
Shisui hums, tilting his head to press a kiss against Itachi's head. She leaves then, not listening to anymore of their conversation.
Now that Itachi is of legal age, she suspects it won't be long before Itachi announces their relationship. After all, despite the Mangekyo, Shisui wasn't blind yet, and Itachi was a very attractive young man. They're already close, so it feels like it's just a matter of time.
Four months later, she's seated across the table with Fugaku yet again, though this time Shisui is with them and looking anxious as all hell while Itachi stares more defiantly. Mother, Father," Itachi starts again, just like that day four years ago. "Shisui and I are dating." If Shisui scoots away from Fugaku, she pretends not to notice.
Beside her, Fugaku blinks. "Well, it's about time you told us," she says before he can interject.
Both give her an incredulous look. "What?"
"How long has it been?" She asks, directing her gaze at Shisui.
"Uh," he looks at Itachi, who simply smiles reassuringly. "Three months?" He tenses, prepared for her or Fugaku to blow up at him for dating their precious son.
"Uh-huh."
"Well, congradulations," Fugaku finally says.
She suspects Shisui would look less surprised if someone told him the Nidamine had been resurrected and wanted to take him on as an apprentice.
As the boys leave, she takes a sip of her tea. "How long have you known?" Fugaku asks once they're out of hearing range.
Mikoto smiles. "I don't know what you're talking about." At his unimpressed looks, she rolls her eyes. "Fourteen years. How did you not notice?"
While he struggles to reply, she thinks about how to broach this subject with the clan elders. She refused to have Itachi forcibly wed to someone he didn't love, but how was she going to win that fight?
Three years, a war, and too many close calls later, Mikoto puts the same hairpin she'd worn on her own wedding day in Itachi's hair. It'd been a long, painful three years, full of hardship and suffering, but it was worth it.
She puts her hands on his shoulder and lean in to press a kiss against his cheek. "Are you ready?"
He looks up at her and beams. Genuinely beams. It was a look she never thought she'd see again on him after Shisui was nearly killed on a mission. "I've never been more ready."
She smiles warmly. She'd known this day was coming for decades now, yet she still feels tears in her eyes as Itachi and Shisui recite their vows together. Beside her, Fugaku's eyes look just as watery. She doesn't think she's ever been more proud of her baby boy.

sakura bakes shisui a cake.
preview.
“ah, what’s this?” “strawberry cake. I was thinking about what you said the last time we saw each other and…I made it.” “strawberry cake?” shisui parrots, lifting the top to appraise his pink gift, delicately covered in pink icing and topped with sliced strawberries on the top. “oh, man…thank you.” he surprises her by bowing to her, to which she stutters and nods. “are you doing anything right now? wanna come in for a bit?” oh, he’s inviting her inside. sakura bawks. he’s inviting her inside. GO, BAKA!

cheap booze
oc | gen word count: 0.4k
Teenagers will do dumb teenage things. They have from time immemorial and will continue to in the far, far future.
So all things considered, Genma isn't surprised when he finds his baby brother sneaking a few cans home to drink with his team mates while Hyou and Takashi are away. Caught the smell of cheap beer long before he heard Shisui's loud, intoxicated laughter on the veranda.
Curly in question was just teasing Rio for smoking and drinking despite being the team's resident medic as Genma appeared before anyone could even think of trying to hide their crimes, right after Rio told Shisui to fuck off.
Not that they'd have a chance in HELL of convincing him that this wasn't what it looked like.
Frankly Genma wasn't even mad that they were drinking at all, it was the fact that he thought they were smarter than to do it unsupervised. Boys will be boys and all that, though. He turned to his baby brother in question to start off the oncoming lecture - suspiciously quiet through Shisui's sputtering and Rio's sheepish muttered apology.
The question of what he had to say for himself slowly withered in Genma's throat when Tae came into full view; curled into himself against a pillar, swirling around the contents of a can he'd been sipping idly from the entire time. Tae's gaze didn't meet his brother's through the tears when he asked if just maybe he could learn how to act a little more normal, maybe then his father wouldn't go out of his way to avoid him, making a note about how this brand was one Jiraiya would always skip for the low alcohol content.
Genma was still mad, frustrated even, they'd all get the proper chewing out they deserved for being dumb irresponsible kids. But comfort took precedence right now that everyone was mostly sobered up from this confession.
Tae still doesn't like the way cheap booze makes him feel. Rio doesn't serve it at their bar.
And he'd be reticent to say, but from then on Genma never fully could hide his distaste when the Toad Sage was mentioned or present, the image of his normally perfectly reserved baby brother sobbing open, drunken tears into his shoulder that night bubbling just underneath the surface.
Genma counts himself lucky that Tsunade was elected Hokage instead. He doesn't think he'd be able to keep an impassive farce if he was tasked with guarding Jiraiya constantly.
He'd served as a tokujō for the Kage since Minato, but the prospect of having to bite his tongue constantly for the sake of his job made him consider quitting.

shisui & itachi roadtrip nonsense
In Arizona
"Wha---what is that?" Shisui asks, eyes narrowing as he leans in closer to the glass case.
"I believe that is the Thing," Itachi deadpans, caught somewhere between annoyance and amusement at the novelty of this road-side stop.
Shisui narrows his eyes at the gray mass tucked in the case. "Do you think it's real?" He whispers.
Itachi rolls his eyes. "Probably not. It appears to be a paper mache craft project."
"Ah c'mon Itachi! The magic is in believing!" Shisui chides, looking up at Itachi with sparkling eyes. Shisui knows he is charming and insanely persuasive, hence why they keep making stops at every roadside attraction in the continental United States.
"It's not very convincing," itachi remarks, taking in what is supposed to be proof of the extraterrestrial but really feels like a waste of time.
"Then close your eyes and believe."
"I won't be able to see it then."Shisui smiles back at him.
"Exactly."
In Colorado
They camp for a night in the Great Sand Dunes National Park, because one of Itachi's goals for this grand roadtrip is to hot up as many National Parks as possible. The sand dunes are magnificent as they are astonishing.
"Isn't in crazy how all of a sudden there's just… sand. Like, sand everywhere," Shisui remarks, letting a handful of it slip through his fingers.
Itachi smiles softly.
"It's a little unexplainable, isn't it? I'm sure there's a reason why this is here, but it's almost more magical to not know why and instead just be amazed that it's here at all."
Quirking an eyebrow, smirk growing, Shisui quips, "Oh so now you're filled with mystery and adventure?"
The next day, Itachi buys a so-ugly-it's-cute Bigfoot Christmas ornament in a junky shop in Colorado Springs. When asked what compelled him to buy it, Itachi just responds with a cheeky grin,
"I don't know, kind of reminded me of you."
Shisui pouts a little at that.
In Oklahoma
Itachi's head whips to determine if what he saw in his perriferal is actually real. Interestingly enough, it is.
"Pull over there," he says, voice tinged with an edge of urgency.
Shisui follows where he is pointing, crossing the highway to find… Alvin and the Chipmunks?
Itachi's already half-crawling into the backseat to grab the camera. "You have to get my picture."
Shisui sits stunned at the events unfolding, not quite processing what is going on before it finally hits him that they are now pulled into the parking lot of a Marijuana despinsery so that Itachi can get his picture with three massive and slightly unnerving chipmunks. Of course he loves Itachi, so he takes the camera and gets out of the SUV.
In Arkansas
Their adventures have taken them to the Ozark mountain range, specifically to the small town of Eureka Springs, nestled and built into the mountain side. It has quirky, tourist shops, interesting restaurants, and a sex shop right in the middle of town. And not just any kind of sex shop, but a slightly trashy one.
So of course, Shisui just has to go in it.
Hand in hand, Shisui leads (drags) Itachi amongst the families visiting the little town towards the shop. Not one to be too embarrassed about his sexuality usually, the location and lack of any subtlety has a small blush growing on Itachi's cheeks. He finds himself keeping his head down and hoping his bangs will keep him from being recognized (as if he knows any of these people).
They make it into the shop, which smells very strongly of lemon intense, and immediately Shisui's eyes light up at the cheap lingerie sets and sex toys scattered about with seemingly no rhyme or reason.
They spend the next twenty minutes pursuing---at least Shisui is---occasionally stopping when Shisui finds something to menace Itachi with.
Making their way to one of the back corners, away from the very open windows to the street or the front counter, Shisui pulls Itachi in close for a kiss.
"You're cute when you blush," he whispers against Itachi's lips. Of course, Itachi blushes just a little bit at the compliment.
"And you're annoying."
"You find it endearing. Honestly, I'm a little horny. Want to get something and maybe go find a place to try it out?" Shisui nuzzles against Itachi's cheek. "I saw a maid set that you would look so cute in back by the window…"
Itachi pulls away with a blush and a scoff. "And the mood is dead."
They ended up not getting the cheap maid costume, but a few other things. Needless to say, the mood was not entirely dead.
This was fun to write. I couldn't sleep so I worked this out on my phone. If you have a state you would like to see them visit, don't hesitate to tell me! This is a fun little writing exercise and I would love to add more to it <3

a scene from a childhood of prodigy.
to serve konoha like this is a duty and an honour, lord danzo tells him. and shisui believes him.
it takes an extraordinary amount of energy to use the mangekyou, he remembers his father telling him. far more chakra than could be accessed by a child, so young and so fragile. “it’ll come, as you grow into your abilities, as you get bigger and stronger,” he’d said, pride and concern all wrapped together. “but for now you must be careful. patient with yourself.” but others are not so patient.
when word spreads of his awakened sharingan, the clan is unable to keep them away. they come from the village, through the front gate of the uchiha compound and over the threshold of their home, just to see the boy’s eyes. first the hokage, then lord danzo and the village elders, then more, others he’s never met before. he sees heads of the leaf’s respected clans, visiting lords and noblemen. strangers upon strangers with the same strange look as their eyes fall upon him. they are taken with him, ooh and aah, but much prefer to make their remarks to one another than speak to him.
shisui fidgets while he stands before them, unsure of what to do with his hands or his body, all the rest that is extraneous to the eyes they wish to see. as if they are separate from the boy himself altogether. he makes the mistake of getting nervous just once, shifting his gaze towards the floor when the room becomes too crowded and the looking too much to bear. there's a momentary uproar and a woman he doesn’t know tuts her displeasure loudly. before he can correct, her hand is on his chin, tilting it up to bring his eyes back into view. she is not gentle, like his mother when she wants to get a better look at a scrape on his cheek. “I’m not finished yet.” her voice is firm while she scolds him, before she settles back into cooing. “lovely. the leaf must be so proud.” someone else accepts the words on his behalf - or perhaps the praise was never for him to begin with.
the days drag on, an endless cycle of appearing before anyone, everyone the village sends to call. shisui obliges, even as the constant use of his ability, a repeating on and off, makes his head pound. even when he has to blink back the dark spots and the edges of his vision begin to blur. he obliges until he can no longer. his father’s warning proves true, and his sight - which has taken in every millisecond of these days and every detail he would rather forget - dissolves into nothing. in an instant, there is a shift from the heightened awareness of the mangekyou sharingan to a dwindling consciousness. the last thing shisui is aware of is his mother's voice, yelling for the strangers to clear the room. he doesn’t feel the floor as he hits it or her arms as she scoops him up again.
when he wakes some hours later, the word honour tastes bitter on his lips, but the duty weighs him down all the same.

Use Your Imagination
for Drabble_Zone's Prompt #413 | 100 words
3… 2… 1. Now close your eyes. "Everything is burned, red ash everywhere. The color of clay and maple leaves. Our ancestral home in Western Fire Country." Hear our fathers call their bannermen. "Your great-grandfather leads a charge against the Sun clan. Entire nations are split and remade from this plane." Time-warp, once more. "Butterfly wings are nothing compared to the ripple from Madara-sama's fan." "Uchiha generals climb mountains of dead to repel the invaders. Uncracked granite walls covered in invisible, red words." "Shisui-kun… this is scary." Your father instructed me to prepare you. I am sorry, my dearest cousin.

Thank You
Pairing: Uchiha Itachi x f!Reader
Summary: Going blind and coughing up blood, Itachi had to seek some kind of medical aid, if only to prolong the inevitable. It helped that some random farming village's secondary clinician was so understanding and willing to provide that aid - but now, after a year of visits and spinning a Parnassian lie, he's started to care for the clincian, against his better judgement.
W/c: 2.7k
Warnings: meh, fluff, just Itachi going blind and trying to be nice (also him negating to tell our girl that he isn't just some wayward poet)
Notes: totally totally totally inspired by this post by @weeny-mcbitch !! also, was supposed to be a drabble that I stayed up all night to write instead, so lmk if y'all want a part 2, im teeming with ideas rn (also, im working on my requests, i swear to god, this is kinda like a warm up for one of then - whoever sent in that itachi and shisui one ily youre a genius) anyway lmk if this sucks

He was such a kind man, there wasn't a thing in the world you wouldn't have done for him, for free. Just his thanks and the small, reluctant smiles he would give you were payment enough.
"I don't want your money, Itachi," you giggled as you reshelved an assortment of herbs. "When have I ever made you pay for my silly, little pills?"
"They're not silly, and you should."
Looking over to him and his holey cloak, you just asked with a grin, "When are you going to let me fix up that ratty cloak of yours, anyway?"
"I'm practically stealing from you as is," he grimaced, holding up the bottle of pills you had just pressed.
Itachi stared at the exam room wall in front of him with wide, unmoving eyes for a moment longer before letting them trail to you. Smiling at him softly, you returned a jar of Goldenseal essence to your wall. His stare made you nervous - it was as if he were looking straight through you, despite an effort. You shelved the final jar and put your hands up, one in front of the other, aimed at Itachi.
"What are you doing?"
"How many fingers am I holding up with the hand closer to you?"
"Why are you doing this?" He asked with a sigh, looking back to the wooden wall in front of him. Dropping your hands, you moved to sit beside Itachi on the bench of your family's exam room.
Your father was your village's clinician, trained by his father and his father before him. He had been training you thusly to carry on the title, which allowed you the facility to care for the wandering ninja before you, whenever he came along. It wasn't terribly often that Itachi would visit, but you always made sure to be thorough in your examination when he would.
"Last time you were here, I noticed you were having some issues with your depth perception. This time, your pupils aren't properly dilating with the light," you told him softly. Itachi just turned his head down to look at the floor instead. Sighing, you put your hand on his shoulder, squeezing lightly as you said, "I'm not an optometrist by any stretch, but my cousin is. If you're still here tomorrow afternoon, I can get you an appointment."
"I won't be."
His voice was firm, but had such an feeling of regret attached to it. You frowned, letting his shoulder go. He was an adult, and a wanderer, no less. There wasn't a thing in the world you could do to force Itachi to do anything.
The air in the room had gotten much too thick for your liking. So you smiled, bumping your shoulder against his as you stood again, remarking, "I suppose the life of a travelling poet doesn't allow time for optometry then."
"No, it doesn't..." Itachi trailed off.
You just chuckled lightly, collecting your notes on the wanderer that were strewn across your father's desk. Your desk. The practitioner's desk. A life of poetry and meandering seemed so nice in comparison to your boring life. Though, Itachi never meandered. He never seemed to have the time. You'd think a man of his lifestyle would have all the time in the world.
"Will you ever share one of your poems with me?" You asked, lining your year's worth of papers up before sliding them into your bag.
"What?"
Scared out of your skin, you jumped away from Itachi, who was suddenly standing beside you. He took a step back, extending his arms to you. Itachi's face filled with worry as his cloudy, black eyes jumped around your entire body.
"I'm sorry," he said quickly. "I didn't mean to frighten you, I should have made more noise. I'm so s-"
"It's alright," you murmured, taken by the slight parting of his lips and furrow of his brow. You just stared at his face, heart corralling itself, as a different Itachi stood before you. One you hadn't seen before. Inhaling deeply, you bit down on your lip, murmuring, "As an aside... you smell amazing."
Closing his mouth, Itachi blinked slowly as his expression morphed into that of confusion, then to a slight... well, you didn't know. He just seemed caught off guard, though pleasantly so. Itachi's brow relaxed slightly, and you were blessed with his small smile. The right corner of his mouth lifted just slightly higher as his eyes roamed your face, and Itachi leaned forward unconsciously. You smiled back, collecting the straps of your bag as you maintained your gaze on Itachi.
After a long while, Itachi rubbed the back of his neck, turning his eyes to the ground. "What do I smell like?"
"I dunno," you chuckled, pulling your bag over your shoulder and walking up beside Itachi. You leaned closer to him and took a long breath, deep and thoughtful. Humming, you mumbled, "Like a very foggy forest, I suppose."
"Ugh, that's terribly musky," Itachi complained with a kind of joke in his tone that was foreign to your ear. You smiled as Itachi turned his head to look at you, his minty breath washing over you as he asked hesitantly, "And you... like that?"
"I do, indeed," you confirmed with a nod. "Though, I can smell a distinct lack of mullein on you. Make sure you're steaming those pills properly."
"I do," he replied almost indignantly.
You chuckled as you asked, "With the towel over your head, and all?"
Itachi's nose twitched, nodding, "As embarrassing and time consuming as it is, yes."
"What colours come up after?"
"Black, and blood."
"Are you coughing while over the pot?"
Itachi's face scrunched up at your question. "No, ew, why would I-"
"Don't cough into the pot, take your head out for a second," you laughed, shaking your head. Walking to the exam room door, you flicked off the lights, allowing the moonlight from the window to illuminate the room. "You shouldn't suppress your coughs, that will only make you cough harder when you give in."
You opened the door and turned back to the beautiful, black haired poet. He stood by the desk, nodding silently and softly. Itachi's large eyes reflected the shine of the moon so wonderfully, it was like you could see the individual beams as they touched the different shades of his dark irises.
Eh, what the Hell. "Care to walk me home, or does the Poet's Life not allow time for that either?"
Elegant as a dancer, Itachi swiveled on his heel and came to you with his small smile returned to his full lips. His cloak swished as he walked toward you, his footsteps no louder than those of the smallest mouse in the largest church. Voice as rich as your grandmother's chocolate cake, Itachi hummed,
"I can make the time, if only for you."
"Oh, stop, now you're just flirting with me," you grinned as the black haired man followed you out of the primary exam room.
"And if I am?"
"Well," you grinned with a blush, locking the door. "Then I would smile, kiss you, and say thank you."
"Then I'm awaiting your kiss."
"You're awfully bold this evening, Itachi," you giggled, hooking your arm into his as you began to walk down the short hallway of exam rooms.
He smiled, looking straight forward as he walked with you, putting his other hand over yours. Just his presence was so calming, but it was like contact with him put your soul in a trance. Nothing bothered your mind, nothing nagged - everything felt peaceful, or at least tentatively so. The two of you swept into the waiting room and you both turned back to lock the door to the hallway.
"Do you have a boyfriend? A husband?"
"Cripes, Itachi, how old do you think I am? A husband?" You exclaimed with a laugh.
"You said you were nineteen a few months ago," Itachi said with a gentle voice. "A young woman like you... you should have a husband... someone to love you."
"Lots of people love me," you replied, mocking his earlier indignance, pulling Itachi through the dark waiting room.
"That's not what I meant," he sighed, pursing his lips. You frowned a bit, recognizing he thought you were upset. Itachi's hand stiffened over yours, as if he was worried you would let go. Drawing a deep breath, he clarified slowly, "I meant... I'm sorry, I just- you're so... it's unbelievable that no one has... you must decline a thousand proposals a day, is what I mean."
"Awfully poetic wording," you remarked jokingly.
Opening the front door of the clinic, you and Itachi squeezed through together while you chewed on your lip. The night air was crisp, wrapping you in a ticklish blanket, which had you you tighten your grip around Itachi's bicep. The muscle rippled beneath your fingers as Itachi pulled you a step closer to him while you locked the final door.
"My dad takes care of that for me," you admitted, drawing him down the steps of your family's clinic and onto the dirt road. "He needs me at the clinic, and in the garden, and at home - one day, he'll decide we need a next generation to continue the clinic, but I've still got a few more years."
Looking over, you remarked the frown that had settled onto Itachi's lips. Still staring ahead, Itachi looked genuinely upset by your words, almost troubled.
"I wish... I'm sorry," he simply said.
"Not your fault, poet," you shrugged, rubbing small circles into his bicep. "I'm content. I've got a job, a small nation's worth of friends, and the attention of the most handsome ninja in the world."
"Who?" Itachi snapped, head swiveling so quickly you could hear a small crunch of cartilidge.
With a chuckle, you shook his arm. "Don't tell me you're losing your sharpness along with your eyesight." Itachi quirked his eyebrow at you, squinting as he did. You snickered, "You, Itachi, are the most handsome ninja- no, human - and you're gorgeous. Drop-dead gorgeous."
"Now you're just flirting with me."
"I am, but I'm also telling the honest truth," you replied, feeling like your heart was going to beat out of your chest at any second.
Looking forward, you could make out the lights of your house in the distance. You turned your head up, hearing the crickets' chirps and the soft breaths Itachi took. The stars above where abundant in the black canvas of the sky, the white and yellow specks flickered in every corner, as far as the eye could see. Right in the center of the sky, directly above the two of you, a big, bright, full moon shone, bathing your little village in silver glow. Everything seemed so perfect, so picturesque - as if the whole world was as calm as you. Perhaps it was, if only while you walked with Itachi.
"Do you know any of the constellations?" Itachi asked you gently, only a few paces from your house.
"Not a one, you?"
"I could draw you a map of the sky, if you wanted me to."
You looked over casually as Itachi raised his eyes to the sky. He began squinting and widening his eyes, pupils stagnant and his eyes dry. Despite the obvious troubles, Itachi raised his hand from yours and pointed. Your eyes followed up his arm, his index finger drawing a strange figure eight in the Northern sky as he mumbled,
"There... do you see a really bright star and a kind of fish shape?"
Matching his squint, you looked where he pointed. Itachi's finger was a ways off the brightest star in that direction, but you assumed that was the star he meant.
"I see the bright one, I think, but the fish is a bit tough."
"Well, the star is called Vega, and the constellation is Lyra," he told you, bringing his hand back to rest atop yours on his bicep. Itachi squeezed your hand to his muscle and he continued, "It's a lyre, like the one Orpheus played."
"Who's Orpheus? And who's the liar?"
"A lyre is a harp of sorts, but Orpheus' is a very long story, sweetheart," Itachi chuckled lowly as the two of you approached your house.
With a shrug, you pulled him to the stairs to your door and sat on the second step, letting go of his arm.
"I've got the time for a story."
Smiling, Itachi sat next to you and began, "Then forget Orpheus for a second while I tell you about Jason."
Over the hours of the night, Itachi divulged the epic legends of Jason and his Argonauts, shifting to Orpheus and Eurydice after. You listened with rapt attention, clinging to every word as he gesticulated wildly. Itachi painted such vivid imagery with his tongue that you had no doubt he was a poet. Of course people would pay to listen to his voice, to be taken into a world of his creation.
As he recited the tales, you asked him questions. Silly, little questions, you thought, but they derailed him greatly, sending him on tangents about different translations and different versions of the same myth.
"He has to turn around."
"But he can't, you just said that was the rule."
"What would you do, if your love refused to look at you?" Itachi asked, eyes locked with yours.
You shrugged and yawned, "I dunno, you're always staring at me."
"Okay, then think," he chuckled. "I'm in front of you, and you can only see the back of my head, as we walk out of Hell."
"Sounds alright."
"We're in Hell though, sweetheart," Itachi reminded you with a smug smile. "The ground is alive, only to trip you - demons are swarming and taunting us - we're surrounded by danger. And I don't look back... I don't check if you're still with me, or if you're alright."
"Oh, I get it, I get it," you hummed with a nod. "But still, we would be fine, as soon as we're safe on Earth."
"Eurydice didn't think so." Itachi tore his eyes away from yours, looking to the sky as it lightened. "In the one version where Orpheus doesn't turn, Eurydice turned back. She returned to Hell, not wanting to live if Orpheus didn't care enough to check on her."
"That's terribly sad, Itachi."
He looked back to you, smiling softly despite your words. "I'm sorry, sweetheart. I don't mean to sadden you."
"I'm not sad." You yawned again, leaning on Itachi's shoulder. "Not sad at all."
"I should let you go in, get some sleep while you still can."
"Next time you come, you should stay with me," you suggested, almost ignoring his attempt to leave. "You could stay for a few days even, get some proper writing in. The village isn't awe-inspiring, but we've got a few nice streams and valleys."
Itachi took a deep breath, then leaned his head against yours gently. The two of you sat on your step, simply breathing together as the sky shifted from a navy blue to a darling lilac. Slowly, the stars that Itachi seemed to know so much about faded into the distance, leaving you only a twinkle in your mind to mark their presence. Birds stirred awake, the hatchlings cheeping desperately for breakfast from their diligent parents. The birds awoke the cicadas, who started their droning early, before the sun even began to rear it's stunning halo over the horizon.
The silence that you and the wandering poet had constructed began to seep away as the farmers began their morning duties. Machinery whirred to life, and farmhands slowly started stumbling from their houses, on their ways to their contracts.
No louder than a whisper, Itachi mumbled, "I need to go."
"Why? A limerick on the tip of your tongue?"
"You could say that," he smiled, lifting his head off of yours slowly. Once you raised your head from his shoulder, Itachi stood and extended his hand to you. You took it gratefully, and Itachi added, "I'll come back soon."
"I hope," you replied honestly, squeezing his hand. Itachi's Obsidian eyes flickered around your face, his pupils dilating wide. You grinned, "I'll work on some eyedrops for you - I can't restore muscle, but I can help quell the dryness."
"You don't have to do that."
"I want to."
"Okay," Itachi whispered.
Carefully, he brought his free hand to your face, tracing your cheekbone with his thumb as his fingers pressed against your jaw.
When you leaned against him, Itachi let go of your hand, in favour of cupping your face on either side. You rested your palms around his thick, bare, scarred forearms, as the tattered sleeves of his cloak had fallen to his elbows. For a minute, you and Itachi stood in the quiet of the morning as his fingers gently roamed around your face. They brushed down your nose, feeling each dip in your jaw and temples, gently squeezing the flesh of your cheek. Everywhere he touched, a trail of tingling fire was left, making your heart bounce around in your chest. Itachi's small smile grew on his face, deepening from a simple smirk to a full-blown beam.
Blinking a few times, Itachi said, a decibel louder, "You are... very, very pretty, Y/n."
You smiled, leaning forward to the balls of your feet. Lingering for only a second, you pressed a kiss to Itachi's cheek. His face bloomed quite the rosy red, as you said,
"Thank you."

late night. | Shisui/OFC
surprise, bitch Shisui/Akari drabble from a request on twitter<3
---
Tumblr media
Returning to the village late at night from a too-long mission is cathartic, in its own way. Even with exhaustion burrowing deep down to his bones until he can feel the weight of every breath, the struggle to put one foot in front of the other rather than risk a sloppy shunshin. It’s almost worth it, with the streets quiet enough that all Shisui can hear is his own breathing; a blanket of calm permeates the air, indolent, as the handful of jonin meandering from rooftop to rooftop give him a quick nod as he passes. Late enough that it could be considered morning, quiet enough it feels like a dream.
He doesn’t have to worry about questions dogging his heels from other nin, doesn’t have to stop and smile and promise his aunty he’ll be there for dinner later in the week (he will, always). All Shisui has to think about is ducking his head into the Hokage’s office, giving a quick report that he was successful on his mission, and then he can fall into bed and sleep for about twenty hours. He’ll have a proper write-up tomorrow, when he can see straight and jumpstart his brain into working once again. For now, he drags his feet homeward, desperate enough for the familiar sight and smell and feel of hearth and home that he can practically taste it.
He doesn’t bother locking the door, not in a village like this. Leans against the wall as he toes off his sandals, fingers tugging lazily at his holster until he can pull it over his head and drop the worn leather on the kitchen table. Remnants of earlier inhabitants occupy every corner; a stack of dishes litter the sink, a half dozen kunai spread across the tabletop to wink in the moonlight that spills from the open window. A forgotten book, cover a deep red and spine well-worn. Shisui cocks a brow at that, wonders briefly what could have possibly occurred that had Akari strolling down memory lane. Considers it for a moment, with scarred fingers that drag softly, lovingly, across the top; lifting it open for a moment, smiling at the sight of messages and letters passed, a single pressed flower sticking out between two worn pages. Remembers belatedly from his still-weary mind that she sleeps nearby, close enough to touch.
The book is forgotten as he moves down the hall on muscle memory alone, shadows pulling at his every footfall. The bedroom door is already open when he steps inside, and even in the dark of night still he can see her splayed across the mattress, blankets tangled around bare legs and hair an utter mess. His smile turns tender as he watches her breathe, eyes not once leaving her face as he plucks at his clothes and tosses them somewhere in the vicinity of the hamper - she’ll grouse about it in the morning, but for now he needs her in his arms nearly desperately.
Shisui takes his place at her side, selfishly burrowing above her. Arm across her stomach until he can curve a palm over her hip, nose buried in the crook of her neck; his eyes fall shut even as Akari goes still the moment he touches her, wide awake the moment she feels him. He doesn’t care if he woke her up, doesn’t care that his hands are cold and that she’s already whispering his name in that exasperated huff, sleep still clinging to her with lazy hands. She grumbles in his direction, rolling over until he’s pressed to her chest, hand coming up to tangle in his riot of curls. Her eyes are still closed, small pinch between her brows; he doesn't have to see her face to know, and he smiles into the kiss he presses, whisper-soft, to the line of her jaw.
She’s warm, enveloping him in her errant affection as their legs tangle together. Her heart beats steady and sure beneath his ear, and it’s the sweetest sound he’s ever heard.
“You’re late,” Akari whispers into the quiet, voice low and rough from disuse. She lifts a hand to ruffle her hair, leans down to kiss his forehead but misses and lands her mouth somewhere beside an eyebrow instead, all affection and no bite.
“Only a little,” he argues, half-heartedly. Feels her soft scoff that pushes her breast further into his skin and he could die a happy man, right here and right now.
Death is cruel indeed, when Akari shifts until he’s no longer cradled in her arms. Shisui pouts hard enough he’s certain she can hear it, laying flat on his back as she leans above him on an elbow, hair fluffed out around her ears and a frown twisting her mouth.
“Two weeks, that’s what you said.” Her tone makes him fidget, glancing away from the smudged shadows lingering beneath her eyes to instead look to where her hand in clenched into a fist on the pillow. Part of him wants to crack wise about a worried girlfriend left at home, another part almost wants to assure her that hey - they’re shinobi. Par for the course in the uncertainty of their lives; shit happens, missions go long. He knows that’ll earn him a swift kick to the shin and a potentially cold night spent alone on the couch, so he wisely keeps his mouth shut.
Biggest part of him wants to pull her down to his chest, ignore her words and her grousing that he loves so much because he’s here in bed with her; he’s home and she’s here and she smells nice and feels nice and holy fuck he’s tired.
He does none of that. Instead he tilts his head, mouth curved into a pout as he looks up at her. Feels like he’s kicking a foot in the dirt, hand caught in the cookie jar. “I know what I -”
“It’s been five.”
His sigh is heavy enough to drown him. “I’m sorry, you know I couldn’t get word out or -”
His world darkens further. Hands cup his cheeks as a weight falls over him. Akari shifts, quick as the seasoned ANBU she is, to straddle his hips and hold him like he’s something precious. She breathes him in, and kisses his words as they come. “Welcome home,” she whispers into his mouth, lips brushing softly over his.
Shisui’s breath comes out in a gust, muscles relaxing until he sinks further into the mattress. He brings his hands up to grip her hips, dragging her down until he can swallow all of her complaints. “Good to be back.”
