THIS is a really good question. at the beginning, she doesn't necessarily resent who she is -- she just subconsciously wants for a place to belong, and for people to fit in amongst. she absolutely recognizes she's different but she doesn't fault herself for that, she just focuses on trying to fit in

now, as time passes and she comes to understand people more, her stance might change -- especially if she manages to spend time with people she cares about and makes friends, but ends up getting ousted or otherwise ostracized. at that point, she might idly wish she was someone else.

for the most part though being a wraith is something she doesn't dwell on, it's just a part of her that she accepts without thinking.

I was thinking about what different Sonic characters' names could be in sign a couple of months ago, since so many people headcanon Sonic knowing sign language, and I ended up making animations for a few!! Here's what I came up with for Sonic!! :D

In the video, Sonic is signing his name, comprised of the words ‘fast’ and ‘hedgehog’ in BSL. He signs ‘fast’ by bouncing his index fingers off of each other—his right finger coming down as his left goes up—with the other fingers and thumb curled in. “fast” is written in dark green on the left side of the background as he signs this.

The word in the background changes to “Hedgehog” as he signs the second part. His raised right hand opens up so that his fingers and thumb are all splayed, while the lowered left hand curls into a fist. The left arm moves horizontal in front of his chest, and the splayed right hand lowers to run the heel of the palm across the top of the forearm, to symbolise the spines of a hedgehog. Lifting his right elbow up to move the palm across the other arm obscures the “Hedgehog” lettering slightly.

Between Michizou Tachihara's bad habit of trying to pass the time and finding a reason to justify what he does with his life - being a guitarist in a small band -, he accidentally finds his religion in the form of their bassist - Gin Akutagawa - when she rarely gives him the time of day beyond impulsive hook-ups. Unfortunately, change is on the horizon after their drummer Higuchi walks in on something she shouldn't, and Gin doesn't want to talk about it. As per usual.

When Doppo Kunikida is seventeen, he goes out for a smoke on the pier and finds himself in the midst of a strange conversation with a Port Mafia-affiliated red-head with exhaustion as evident as beauty. Or, Doppo and Chuuya meet far before Doppo's employment at the Armed Detective Agency. Doppo's simply never put the pieces together of the two - the red-head with a flair for the dramatic and existentialism - being the same as the Executive of the Port Mafia.

Ranpo Edogawa is seventeen and alone on the anniversary of his parents' death. He does what any logical seventeen-year-old does when their grief threatens to drown them - steals Fukuzawa's sake since the man is out of town, and nearly drowns in his grief regardless. Fukuzawa takes everything Ranpo throws at him and comes back anyway.

the stages of a nightmare; — fukumori, 10,068 words

Fukuzawa Yukichi is no stranger to assassination attempts, or even assassination attempts made possible by strange abilities. That doesn't change the fact that it's inconvenient, often dangerously close to deadly, and often side-by-side with Mori Ougai. It's rather odd people always try to assassinate them both at the same time, but Fukuzawa deals with it as best he can when he falls asleep and wakes up in a world compromised of his worst fears brought to life.

Michizou Tachihara finds himself scorned from the only two families he's ever had - which is how he finds himself staying at Junichirou Tanizaki's dorm room while he tries to put his life back together. Tanizaki seems to have faith in him. Michizou doesn't know why. They find their middle ground in the middle of the night when neither can sleep.

Kouyou realizes how much Akiko Yosano truly means to when Akiko brings up her stance on the matter during the only time Kouyou is vulnerable enough to talk about it - in bed.

Atsushi's day starts at five in the morning with an emergency call from Kunikida. The next three weeks proceed as follows: Nakahara Chuuya uses Corruption, Nakahara Chuuya dies, Dazai's status as a married man is known to everyone but Atsushi, and Yosano wants to know why she couldn't heal him fully.

ink traditions (similarity in memory); — shin soukoku, 3,823 words

The tradition Atsushi and Akutagawa have is one born at three in the morning in a hotel room in Sweden with a ballpoint pen and the exhaustion of a sleepless night. Atsushi has never claimed to be an artist, but he and Akutagawa - solace offers its wings when he can draw his pain away, when he can cover the living memories on Akutagawa's skin.

Mori Ougai plans meticulously for many things, but digging up an unmarked grave on a cemetery walk is not one of them.

stranger to stranger (i can find your way home); — chuuya & junichirou, 4,516 words

Nakahara Chuuya is surprised by little in his line of work, but his night is thrown off-kilter when he finds a twelve-year-old Tanizaki Junichirou wandering around Yokohama's docks at two in the morning. Like a good citizen, Chuuya returns him. He finds they have more in common than expected.

Junichirou finds it hilarious that he's technically more of a delinquent than the mafioso he shares a bed with; naturally, this leads to piercing Tachihara's ears in the bathroom of his Agency-provided dorm with a safety pin.

from life to death, death to life; — mori & dazai, 3,350 words

Ougai Mori runs an underground clinic in Yokohama's slums. There's a particular boy that comes by, a stench of death following him whenever he visits. Ougai finds being a hero is not his specialty, but to save one kid, he has to save them all.

an easy kind of love; — chuuatsu, 7,499 words

Atsushi is rather confused when he finds himself in a mafioso's bed first thing in the morning, with no recollection of the night prior; and he's rather concerned when Kouyou Ozaki practically forces him into a fake relationship for the sake of... some reputation he doesn't care about. On the bright side, he gets to know more about Chuuya, and finds that falling in love was easier than he expected.

i find forgiveness in your devotion; — chuuatsu, 2,002 words

Love is foreign to Chuuya, and it's easier to lie to himself when he doesn't meet Atsushi's gaze, late at night with smoke between them.

homebound (my peace of mind is my piece of you); — tachigin, 5,608 words, complete.

Where there is never glamor in a life of betrayal and blood, Michizou has carved out a space for himself. Until Gin is severely injured after a mission, he doesn't realize she was always part of that space.

As the Director of the Armed Detective Agency, Fukuzawa would like to consider himself strong-minded, if not stubborn and headstrong as he's prone to be when it's his subordinates in danger. Still, he's only a man, and after a drink too many he ends up on the phone with his ex-husband for, perhaps, the fifth time this month. It's getting old, yes, but he still has Mori's number and it's time that took them apart. Is it wrong to miss till death do us part?

munkuposting (metastrap?) for the jellinclined (i am so sorry)

you tell me i'm insane but i know my truth and my truth is that munkustrap wants to help her. he wants to reach out and help her up like he just helped jennyanydots during her song. he leans down and it's not just so he can look at her better. it's not just cause there's no point to his defensive stance here except for her to see, for him to communicate she's unwanted, and he knows it. shit dude the guy can't look her in the eyes for longer than 5 seconds.

like come on. munkustrap's running after old deuteronomy and the rest of the older/less agile cats so much in this goddamn film he might as well be Munkustrap the Mobility Aid Cat. man knows what he wants in life and that's going on as many walks with senior citizens hanging off his arm as physically possible and neither god nor the heaviside layer will stand in his way.

his responsibility's a whole different thing, though. look at the lad puffing up when grizabella shows up. that's a guard he uses against perceived threats like macavity and it's well and warranted then, but what in the name of ye olde cat gods is the old lady gonna do? garbage stink them all to death? it's performative as hell on purpose. both of them know she's not gonna jump him and he doesn't need to protect himself or his fellow cats from her physically.

in the macavity scares, odd as it might look on a person, The MunkuStance™ is a genuine threat. he's up above everyone else or he's one of the few cats on the stage, he's spreading himself out to look bigger, he HISSES lmao.

look at the lad. hissssss lmao i love him.

not only is he saying i won't hesitate bitch he's also establishing himself as The Guy You Fight. if you're an outsider looking in, you're probably not gonna notice Mr Mistoffelees Scampering Through The Pipes Again, but you sure as hell are gonna see the Snarling Tabby Fresh From Hell hopping around in the middle of the stage with his legs 16 kilometers apart at all times. and okay, doing that for the entire musical sure is a Choice, but it's a Character Choice, and mr michael gruber the man you are. the star that you are. i want to send him flowers and chocolate and a card. i would greatly like to do that.

with grizabella though? jesus christ she's about as threatening as a patchy sock. it's not even his first instinct to go Tall Big Puffy when he's trailing after her because there's genuinely nothing to defend against there.

he just sort of slowly stands into it as though he's forgotten he was supposed to be Protecting for a second. the stance, the threat, all that's only there to set a dynamic. it's there to say you're not one of us, we don't like you, please go away, but he's half-assing it so much it loses all its i won't hesitate bitch and turns into i have never hesitated so hard in my entire life. he still establishes himself as The Guy You Fight, but it's obvious grizabella isn't about to fight anyone, so now he's just The Guy She's Staring In Incredulous Longing At, and he can't even hold her gaze for long enough to pretend it's not getting to him because at his core he's not a bad person and he knows that all this is kind of a Dick Move.

this is what makes munkustrap so dummy god tier as a character to me. he may wish he could help grizabella. hell he may even want her back, if not as openly as old deuteronomy does. when all the cats scuttle away and turn their backs to grizabella before memory reprise, munkustrap never even fucking bothers ?? like he's straight up just watching her, and then later watching old deuteronomy watch her like with the most somber wee eyebrows up so can we finally do something about this expression i've ever seen on a performer lmao.

but that means nothing without the approval of the entire tribe! absolutely nothing! because munkustrap, in that regard, is exactly like old deuteronomy: what he wants comes second to what the jellicles want. it's harder to see in him because old deuteronomy is mostly up on the tire being cat jesus and munkustrap mingles with the rest of the ensemble way more, but it's really obvious when you look. they defer to his leadership, but he defers to their collective decisions.

he moves mistoffelees away from grizabella (just like the rest of the older cats) because mistoffelees doesn't know any better and grizabella is untouchable, but then he stalls and waits when demeter reaches out to her. like, i'm pretty sure he would've just let her touch grizabella right then and there. had demeter been a little less aware of the fact that this was the first 30 minutes of the musical, i'm pretty sure she would've just taken grizabella back in right then and there and memory wouldn't have even been necessary. munkustrap sure wasn't about to do shit about it.

he's actively leaning back to give her space!! (i know logistically that it's mr michael giving an opening for ms aeva to execute her Conflicted Scuttle Away but munkustrap is still leaning back however you put it so i'm right automatically. haw yee)

i'm fascinated by it specifically because this way it's almost as though munkustrap is an extension of the jellicle collective, if that makes sense. obviously he's the narrator so we can't give him a complex emotional storyline if we want to keep the aryas in single digits, but in turn this means that now he's a character who chooses to forgo his own feelings in favour of those of his community, and that's just, man, that's just. man. ca(s)t of all time for real. a guardian and a weapon and a storyteller and a teacher and not one of those for his own sake. Man.

tl;dr, old deuteronomy can be hella proud of his kid, and i can eventually stop crying. also here are the gifs of him finally getting to comfort grizabella a little. experience emotions with me.

unfortunately i have similar (if slightly less rambling) thoughts on tugger and why he's constantly being such a massive cunt to grizabella lmao. if you guys are unfortunate enough i may subject myself to the giffing and writing of that post too. toodlepip ✌️
