Do you like minizines?

Hi! I've recently been getting into making zines, and something I've noticed over time is that most fandom zines are closer to books then what zines were in the past. Those are great, but I also love being able to print out and fold a minizine and have a small book!

This won't work exactly like a major zine project. I'm not interested in having people apply to be contributors or having multiple mods or having merch around it. Instead, it’ll be people submitting individual works, and some will be chosen to be included in the final mini zine.

Also, this probably won't be just one, minizines (imo) are fun to make and not terribly complicated to design so if there's interest I'd love to do multiple of these! Lastly, I want to include stuff beyond just art and fic, like meta or comic rec lists or cosplay or photography. However, like most zine projects, this will be collaborative and include mostly other peoples' creative output!

What even is a minizine?

Typical fandom zines in 2025 tend to be, essentially, books filled with fandom content. Which is fun, and I like it! But minizines are older and more DIY. They're mini booklets made from one sheet of paper folded & cut (and sometimes stapled). I have some examples on my zine sideblog, @zinesinjars.

My favorite two versions are the 8-page folded classic and the 16-page stapled mini booklet. Instructions for how to fold them are here and here, and will also be included in all posts.

What is allowed as a submission?

Like I said earlier, instead of having a list of contributors, anyone on here can submit individual works! You can submit as many as you want, and any one project can be submitted to as many zines as you want.

Most stuff is allowed, so here's a rundown of what is not allowed:

NSFW isn't allowed.

Neither are the following ships: brudick, brujay, dicktim, jaytim, brutim, dickjay/jaydick, Jason Todd x Damian wayne.

(intentional) Plagiarism. All submissions must be your own work. Including comic panels is fine as long as you state the comic that it's from and it's transformative in some way (like a comic edit or a redraw or smth). If you're really genuinely unsure, you can totally ask me but it's probably fine. This rule exists to make sure nobody is intentionally stealing other peoples fanart or fic or whatever and submitting it as if it’s their own.

Any use of generative AI. To me, what makes fandom worthwhile is its collaborative nature. It's built on labors of love and exists in conversation with both the original piece and with other fans. Anyone has the capacity to be creative, and anyone has the capacity to learn something new. Generative AI steals from artists, is environmentally damaging, and is something I never want to support. So absolutely no use of generative AI is allowed for this.

Pretty much anything else is allowed! Like, literally anything that can be creative. I would say, as a guideline, writing over 1k is unlikely to be allowed simply due to constrictions on space. In addition, minizines are vertical, so if your picture or drawing is square-shaped or taller than it is wide, it will print better than if it is landscape-orientation.

This being said, I'd be willing to accept almost anything that fits inside those guidelines. Traditional art, digital art, fiction writing, nonfiction dc-related writing, recipes, photographs, etc. Have fun and be creative!

How do I submit?

You can either submit a post on here, or email it to me at unofficialdcminizine@gmail.com.

Please include a name that you wish to be credited by, the theme that the submission is for, any socials that you want to be included, and the submission itself.

What else should I know before submitting?

These zines will be 100% free to print and distribute. Submitting is consenting to have whatever you submit in a zine that could be printed by anyone.

Since there's no money being exchanged or anything, pieces don't have to be exclusive to this zine. You're allowed to make something for the purpose of submitting it to this, you're allowed to submit something that you made a year ago, and you're allowed to post stuff that you submit both before and after the zine is published as much as you want.

you can submit as many or few pieces as you want! However I’m going to try to keep the amount of submissions per person even, so it’ll be likely for only one submission per zine to make it to the final project. If something isn’t used in the first or second (or whatever number it is) zine of a certain theme but there’s enough interest for a repeat zine of that theme, for up to a year it might also be included in a subsequent zine. You can submit a piece for as many zines as you want, but in all likelihood any submitted piece will only be selected for one zine.

Also, if your piece does not end up in the final product, that doesn't say anything inherent about it! It could mean anything, from the way it'll print to the amount of space it takes up to how it'll print to having a ship that isn't to my taste. It can even just be that there's a broad theme and I want to represent a broader scope-- like, I wouldn't want a green lantern zine to be 90% hal and 10% kyle if i could have something more like 30% hal, 20% kyle, 10% jo, 20% jess, and 20% john, yk? Something can be amazing and not make it. (I mean ideally that won't happen, but it might! Ideally as many things as possible will make it into end products lol)

Lastly, as this is a project run by one person, I'm not going to pretend to be unbiased. I have favorite ships and characters. I'm not going to intentionally favor them, but I may unintentionally favor them. If someone wants an end product more catered to their own taste, feel free to start your own! I don't mean this spitefully, I love zines and I love minizines and I would love to see more fandom minizines going around lately, and I fully intend to promote any other fandom minizines I see :3

I hate to revive DNI discourse when it just ended on this blog but I often don’t think it’s as deep as people make it out to be and there’s a lot of, for lack of a better word, ~valid~ reasons someone may have a DNI. Like there’s absolutely contexts of “Kink Blogs DNI” disclaimers having an anti, swerf, etc undertone but sometimes I get it — for example I follow a couple of disability activists who post A LOT about incontinence, needing a caregiver, ETC who have stuff like “ABDL/DDLG/Devotee Blogs DNI.” Oftentimes that is not an indicator on their moral stance of those kinks, but rather them just being like “hey this is an activism-based journal where I post about incredibly personal things in regards to my own life, and while anyone has the right to read or reblog from me, if you’re clearly getting off to my medical needs or even if I get the vague impression you are, you WILL be blocked.”

Obviously that is an incredibly extreme and personal example, but I don’t think having a DNI boundary in your bio is ALWAYS a morality/discourse stance. On a much lighter note, I’m pretty active on Kpop Twitter, and there’s a lot of “RPF DNI” accounts there, and I think that’s more of a “I just want to post about my favorite band without shippers quote retweeting/replying to make it about their ship, and if you do so, I’ll block you. They’ve made public statements against these ships or about their real relationships and I am uncomfortable with people trying to dispute that.”

Oh yes there’s absolutely antis who hate RPF communities and all they stand for. But there’s also people who just straight up don’t want that on their account.

And like. As someone casually involved with RPF (i gossip about potential relationships with close friends and will reblog joke posts about it and will read it, but I’m not a writer for it and I’m definitely not someone who actually tries to speculate just how heavy the “fiction” part of an RPF ship might be), whether or not I choose to follow a person with such DNI depends on context. I keep my RPF ships/opinions off my main account, and even if I DO see a post that I would otherwise interpret as possibly shippy, I just won’t bring it up on said person’s posts, you know?

Damn this made me remember I have a DNI myself on one my accounts, 🤣 I have a minors DNI on one of my sideblogs. But I know I can’t prevent minors from seeing my posts or lying about their age or reblogging to a private sideblog or doing anything else that would go unnoticed. But once I do notice you interacting, if you’re clearly underage I’ll block you, just cuz I don’t feel comfortable with minors following my smutty fanart account even if I know minors look at smutty fanart, as someone who did look at smutty fanart as a minor. . .🎶Maybe I’m the problem it’s me. 🎶

No one here thinks they're always deep and meaningful. What we all say every time this comes up is that it's bad to conflate "I will block you if..." and "It is your job to research my boundaries ahead of time".

I'm not interested in people crying about how they like using an inaccurate term and everyone is supposed to understand what they mean. In practice, many people do mean that it's other people's job to enforce their boundaries for them. Validating this garbage terminology just encourages them.

I know you’re probably really busy and I’m SO sorry for sending another ask [apologetic expression] but I think I just had a Solver Shift and although it did make me feel more valid I wonder how shifts are usually triggered?

And how do they end? Because mine ended pretty suddenly when I started munching down on uncooked spaghetti, for some reason. It was nice and crunchy though I wish it had more diameter so it would feel more like I’m eating metal (it doesn’t have the taste for that though, [disappointed expression]).

Heya there. Yeah, we are pretty busy, also why we didn't get to the other asks yet, but this can be answered quite quickly. Another thing to note is that the main Hosts are fronting less and less due to having been out here for far too long, however, we can answer this question real quick since it doesn't require us to spend hours searching for pics or editing things. Thank you for this ask btw; it is appreciated.

From our experience, intentionally triggering a Fictionkin shift isn't something that everyone is capable of, however, those who can trigger it tend to use a few different methods. We will list a few different ones.

Shift Music/Songs. These can be animal themed, soundtrack from source, simply songs that you associate with a kin, nature sounds, background noise of familiar places, and many other things.

Looking at fanart that reminds you of source or yourself

Speaking with canon mates, media mates

Being in a fictionkin server and interacting with fictionkins

Looking up things associated with your media or canon like: fanfiction, edits, ship media if you had a significant other and the fandom portrays it well, voice actors of the media, voice actors or actors of your kin livestreaming things, etc.

Here is an example regarding voice actors:

One of our alters, who is also a fictionkin, has shift triggers regarding the voice actors of his kin livestreaming games singing songs or just being silly. [The kin isn't the VA, but the VA voices said character in-game]

7. Some people have an associated aesthetic or pictures which they associate with their kins, some have specific sounds or actions they associate with kins, etc.

Some people also have shift triggers which are in no way associated with their kins.

Heard of some people who had stims or activities that were shift triggers, but they couldn't explain why. So really it is just a matter of finding what it is for you, it takes a bit of searching, but it usually brings results.
