Portrait of poet and author Siegfried Sassoon (1886-1967). One of the most notable War Poets, Sassoon, who had multiple received multiple decorations for his bravery during WWI, took a strong stand against the war in his literary work. During and after the war, he became a major literary figure and was friends with many great authors and artists, from the Bloomsbury Group and beyond. His fascinating relationship with Stephen Tennant was very intense and painful (especially for Sassoon, I guess). I am looking forward so much to get the opportunity to watch Benediction, the newest film of the great @terencedaviesofficial - it's all about Sassoon AND made by one of my favorite filmmakers, so I just can't wait. (When will it be released in Belgium, I wonder...?) #siegfriedsassoon #warpoet #poet #literature #queerauthor #wwi #terencedavies #benediction #stephentennant #bloomsburygroup https://www.instagram.com/p/CfbFhcmtU_z/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

everybody sang
Everyone suddenly burst out singing; And I was filled with such delight As prisoned birds must find in freedom, Winging wildly across the white Orchards and dark-green fields; on - on - and out of sight. Everyone's voice was suddenly lifted; And beauty came like the setting sun: My heart was shaken with tears; and horror Drifted away... O, but Everyone Was a bird; and the song was wordless; the singing will never be done.

I finished the third part of Pat Barker's marvellous Regeneration trilogy, with the Booker prize wunning The Ghost Road. Even though I am no expert on Lewis Carroll or his Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass, there are aparent references to them that add further layers on top of the Jekyll & Hyde refs of the second book, building even more intrigue and fascination to the beguiling stories of Billy Prior, Dr Rivers, Wilfred Owen, Siegfried Sassoon and other real-life people from 1918, with the novel veering off in unexpected tangents to worlds far away. Small passages of the book, such as the inevitable First World War battlefield trench warfare scenes, evoke such unexpected horror and sadness. The stupid things humanity does. Devestating. Amazing writing. So worth reading. Also apt that I managed to read some of this book whilst on the island of Malta so steeped in centuries of war and defence, looking out across from my balcony towards St Angelo... #books #Booker #bookstagram #whatimreading #goodreads #bookworm #PatBarker #TheGhostRoad #war #LewisCarroll # WilfredOwen #SiegfriedSassoon #poets #warpoetry #Malta #travel #travelphotography #roomwithaview #balcony #Valletta (at Valletta, Malta) https://www.instagram.com/p/B0Sx_79A5ap/?igshid=1b619246odn23

Today's #1000BooksToReadBeforeYouDie is the Regeneration trilogy by Pat Barker. I know many of you out there have read at least one of these novels about World War One poet #SiegfriedSassoon and his time at a convalescent hospital. I haven't. But when I do, I'll be pairing them with my @penguinclassics editions of Sassoon's memoirs, the covers of which form an awesome triptych when placed side by side. https://www.instagram.com/p/Br3J3eHnKaE/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1oj85n5bopm5u

Portrait of socialite, painter and writer Stephen Tennant (1906-1987). This 'brightest of the Bright Young People' was famous for his extraordinary good looks, as well as for his rather idle and decadent lifestyle. His paintings are (to me: surprisingly) modern and witty, and if his biography wouldn't be that expensive and rare to stumble upon, I would definitely try to dig deeper into his life. His relationship with Siegfried Sassoon fascinates me, as does the myth (is it even a myth?) that he spent the last 17 years of his life in bed. #stephentennant #siegfriedsassoon #brightyoungthings #brightyoungpeople #portrait #queerartist #illustration https://www.instagram.com/p/CfeWD4MN76n/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Well, how are things in Heaven? I wish you’d say, Because I’d like to know that you’re all right. Tell me, have you found everlasting day, Or been sucked in by everlasting night? For when I shut my eyes your face shows plain; I hear you make some cheery old remark— I can rebuild you in my brain, Though you’ve gone out patrolling in the dark.
You hated tours of trenches; you were proud Of nothing more than having good years to spend; Longed to get home and join the careless crowd Of chaps who work in peace with Time for friend. That’s all washed out now. You’re beyond the wire: No earthly chance can send you crawling back; You’ve finished with machine-gun fire— Knocked over in a hopeless dud-attack.
Somehow I always thought you’d get done in, Because you were so desperate keen to live: You were all out to try and save your skin, Well knowing how much the world had got to give. You joked at shells and talked the usual “shop,” Stuck to your dirty job and did it fine: With “Jesus Christ! when will it stop? Three years ... It’s hell unless we break their line.”
So when they told me you’d been left for dead I wouldn’t believe them, feeling it must be true. Next week the bloody Roll of Honour said “Wounded and missing”—(That’s the thing to do When lads are left in shell-holes dying slow, With nothing but blank sky and wounds that ache, Moaning for water till they know It’s night, and then it’s not worth while to wake!)
Good-bye, old lad! Remember me to God, And tell Him that our politicians swear They won’t give in till Prussian Rule’s been trod Under the Heel of England ... Are you there? ... Yes ... and the war won’t end for at least two years; But we’ve got stacks of men ... I’m blind with tears, Staring into the dark. Cheero! I wish they’d killed you in a decent show.
- To Any Dead Officer by Siegfried Sassoon.
