Geniue question - how's religious guilt even works in dwarfs?

Hi Sigrid!

Oh that tag referred to my fic A Swift Ascending. It’s currently on hiatus, but I am looking forward to getting back to it, when things are better.

In the fic, Fíli is trans and Dwarven society isn’t very open to that and a big factor is the role of Mahal as the Maker. I wrote something for that last year: here.

And since poor Fíli collects quite a lot of tragedies in the fic, one of the worst the events on Ravenhill, where Thorin and Kíli die, there is always this underlying feeling of being not only forsaken by his Maker, but also actively punished for not just playing the role society expected of him.

Though, it is fair to say that guilt in general is one of Fíli’s big themes in that fic, next to self-worth, identity and closeness to others.

Sigrid: - Faste gir meg glede og innsikt

-Fasten er en helt spesiell tid. Det er en tid med tilgang til dypere meditasjon og refleksjon over livet. 

Det sier Sigrid Leinum, 56 år, en av over fem millioner bahá'íer verden over som møter våren med fastetid. Sigrid ble bahá'í da hun var 25 år gammel. Hun er sykepleier og yogalærer og jobber nå som miljøterapeut for ungdom under barnevernet. Hun bor i Bærum og har fire voksne barn.

Sigrid har fastet fra hun var 25 år bortsett fra de årene hun var gravid eller ammet.

Bahá'í-fasten varer i 19 dager, fra 2. til 20. mars. Denne perioden sammenfaller med bahá'í-måneden Alá - som betyr opphøyethet – og som blir etterfulgt av bahá'í nyttår, Naw-Rúz.  Det er en tid for bønn, meditasjon og åndelig forfriskning.

Fra soloppgang til solnedgang, eller fra klokka 06 til 18, avstår bahá'íer mellom 15 og 70 år fra både mat og drikke. Unntatt er syke, gravide, kvinner som ammer, de som er på reise.

Trodde faste var umulig

-Første gang jeg skulle faste, trodde jeg det nesten var umulig å gjennomføre, sier Sigrid. - Jeg ble veldig overrasket. Sulten kommer i løpet av dagen, men så avtar den, og jeg opplever at jeg har mye energi tross ingen inntak av mat og drikke. Jeg kunne f.eks. ta lange skiturer og allikevel ha bra med energi. Det som også er godt med fasten er at en slipper å bruke så mye tid på å lage og spise mat på dagtid. Og så setter jeg så stor pris på maten kl. 18.

-Hva er mest utfordrende?

-Det vanskeligste med fasten, må være fastens siste dag......at det er et helt år til neste gang. Jeg føler meg fornyet, klarere, mere harmonisk. Jeg får mer glede, innsikt og takknemlighet over livet. Når jeg faster opplever jeg forbindelsen til sjelen min mye sterkere. Det er som om mat sløver kontakt med ånd og sjel.

Starter fastedagen med Smoothie

-Hva spiser du?

-Hva jeg spiser om morgenen varierer fra år til år. I år tenkte jeg å lage en sunn smoothie. Drikker også godt med vann før kl. 06.00. Når jeg bryter fasten om kvelden spiser jeg en god, sunn, lettfordøyelig middag.

-Er det fellesmåltider under fasten?

-Det er veldig hyggelig å bryte fasten sammen med andre. Det å komme sammen å ha bønnestund og spise sammen er et stort høydepunkt.

-Hvordan er "morgenritualet" ditt?

-Når jeg står opp om morgenen er det bønn, meditasjon og yoga, enten før eller etter jeg har spist- helst før.

Fasten gir dypere kontakt med meg selv

-Hva gir mest mening med fasten?  -Det er å gå enda dypere inn i eksistensielle spørsmål og opplevelse av hvorfor jeg er her på jorda, hva min oppgave er og å få klarhet i hvor veien går videre. Jeg merker tydeligere mine gamle mønstre som hindrer meg i å utfolde meg. Og ikke minst gir fasten en dypere kontakt med sjelens uendelig glede, harmoni og fred. En følelse av lykksalighet.

-Hva er reaksjoner fra familie og venner på at du faster? -Mine barn er vant med foreldre som faster, så det er helt naturlig for dem. Alle mine venner synes det er flott at jeg faster.

-Kan faste anbefales? - Jeg anbefaler alle som har en åndelig lengsel å faste, uansett religion og tro, sier Sigrid Leinum. ……………………………….

YESSSSS! I read a great fic about those two and I loved it so much! (here is the fic)

"What made you ship it?": The fic, definitively. And, as usually: I just love Dwalin, man. There are a few ships I don't like, but aside from them, I really enjoy nearly everything with Dwalin in it.

"What are your favorite things about the ship?": Dís is always kind of a wildcard, because everyone pictures her differently and so it's always something new and interesting with her. And of course, Dwalin is in it, which makes everything 10 times better. And don't forget the complex dynamic thanks to royalty and also Thorin as the King. I just love complex dynamics.

"Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship?": I think the ship in itself isn't that popular, so maybe shipping it is already the unpopular opinion?

Hello, do with this information what you will, but I would like to share with you that there is a tropical liana - Dischidia major is her Latin name - that produces balloon-like leaves in which ants build their colonies. (The plant then grows her roots into a nest full of nutritious soil arise from dead organic matter brought there by ants for construction purposes. Just like self made pots.)

It would be very unfortunate if Kili had accidentally, and in no way intentionally, shot down such an ant nest on someone's head, wouldn't it? Shire is such a strange place after all, full of uncanny plants and animals.

I also learned something new about myself, when I read the second past of your ask: the idea of getting hit on the head by a leaf full of ants gives me the heebie-jeebies (including full body shiver), lmao! I didn't know that about myself beforehand 😂

Immediately, I started wondering, if there could be a cool headcanon for the Dwarves using a similar technology for moving in the dark underground. Maybe they hang up metal plates in a special shape in escape routes, so they can find their way in the darkness by the echo of their steps or something similar, if enemies break into their mountain.

Using phenomena in nature for technology is nothing new for humans, but it would be so interesting, if the Dwarves do something similar.
