Q4OS – I setup for myself Linux with Trinity
Tumblr media
I setup a Linux for myself. For not powerful system. With my Acer Extensa. It has two cores with 1.5 ghz. And 4gb of ram. I select in result – Q4OS. As light Linux. For not powerful systems. With its own graphic environment. It is easier, lighter. It has a name Trinity. Firm development from system’s authors. Special for this purpose – to system not to require lots of resources. And it is very good for me.
Tumblr media
With author`s website you to download distributive. It is written with flash as a boot. One little moment, check carefully. There are, also, Live CD images. It is for run system from device. Like flash or compact disk. And, there are for setup, install. So, for install, you need this version to download. I was not accurate and first, download Live Cd. And, I see – I cannot find option to install. But, you can run system at once! I was surprised. I see what is it. And, I start to understand, what is it all about.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Installation process. It is simple and easy. Nothing tricky. Nothing hard. This is good. Installation is friendly to the user. We are moving with steps of installation. And after - system, at last, launching. It is, already, installed. It is good to check updates. What is here. All is automatically checked by itself. It has a name packages for Linux. Lists with packages. You just need to start a certain purpose program. This means network is required. Without internet you cannot to do updates.
Tumblr media
And, later, with manager packages. You start it and see what it can show you. So, it has lots of different. I am not expert with Linux. I take it as a probe. I setup for myself a whole pack, preset for packages. Little game. It is Chocolate Doom with some pack. So, this is not only Chocolate Doom. And, also, some files included. To have all included. So, it includes FreeDoom. And this is comfortable! So, you can start to play at once. To play. Levels for FreeDoom are unique. Even, its own graphics. But, mainly, it is same Doom.
Tumblr media
Once again, I am not expert with Linux. And, better say, I try to try this with my own. But funny thing it is. Installer is looking like it is MS DOS.  So, it has such install line. And, system itself. It reminds Windows. Level Windows Xp or even like Windows 98, maybe. Such background, similar color. And windows forms.
Tumblr media
Interesting moment! Visually, I like a lot this Trinity scheme for desktop. About functions it is very good. I am very surprised. There are lots of things here. And main - there package manager. Using it to update. And install. And this is comfortable. For start – it is good way.
Tumblr media
Visual side looks like something Windows 98 with plus. I like a lot this visual side. Functions are good. And now it is my first launch.  I little about to play Doom.  I visit websites with browser. First launch was successful! And positive!

The absolute pain of finding a website that basically has exactly the paralax effect I want on my images but being completely unable to replicate it for some unknown reason :(
The website is www.smartaupairs.com btw, and I want the paralax images that are like a trapezoid.
(also idk anything about the organisation, not endorsing it or anything, just interested in the html/css if anyone could help me get my grabby hands on whatever kind of magic makes their images that way)

Debian 12 w KDE Plasma let's go~~~
I've got no idea why I didn't like KDE before tbh.... cause trying it now, its kinda nice~~~ last time I tried it was idk how long ago.... when I started messing around with linux to begin with.
It, unlike xfce, has a software updater so I don't need to use the terminal on debian~~~ it looks really snazzy tbh.
last time I used it was idk how long ago..... a decade ago? and I guess now it's just Plasma and not KDE anymore? ??
annoying problem that I fixed~~~~ also for some reason the icons and stuff on my second hard drive have reverted back to dev/sda for my main OS partition and dev/sdb for where all the rest of my data is... and idk why~~~ but the lock icons on everything in that drive is gone~~ and idk what fixed it......
also time.... the date and time was incorrect and i had no idea why given I've selected the proper time zone.... I was just really confused and idk why.... but now I did and it's fixed~~ I had to change the BIOS time to UTC
and since there's no "sync w internet" and you need EXACT SECONDS now the time is slightly off cause I didn't time it down to the second.... but putting my BIOS time into UTC instead of local time fixed it~~~
also still don't know exactly why I can and could get debian to boot and install perfectly fine on my machine even with secure boot and the like from a windows install still on. when linux mint debian edition just.... wouldn't......
stupidly simple fix but I'm happy to have figured it out myself~~~ hope I like KDE more than I did a decade ago. idk why I didn't like it that far back... maybe it was worse? or there was too many customize options and it paralyzed me?
but now I like it so far~~~~ wonder if I can do it up like windows xp/95? lol. throw myself into customize options of KDE and be lost here forever :)
slowly figuring stuff out and my preferences in the linux world~~ idk why I liked xfce..... the KDE log in screen is nicer and more sleek and modern~~~
will gnome stuff work with kde? if I install gnome games? I always install gnome games and then never play any of them lol I mean I'd assume they would but idk~~
idk why I'm documenting my journey with trying different distributions or desktop environments here..... cause I feel no one really cares..... but I got no one around me to talk linux to... even if I am still (in my own eyes) a newbie at it....
welp~~~ back to system config~~ :) hope that's fun~~ and to find accessibility settings~~
what was up with the clock tho? why did I have to set my BIOS time to UTC to get it to be local time? how does linux configure time? never noticed that before~~~
I distro hop a lot I think~~~~
and would ya believe it my function keys STILL WORK~~~~ WOOOO~~
edit: there are swipe gestures to go back on browser?? gonna like KDE I think~~~
yet another edit: double check bios cause I'm a doofus sometimes~~ secure boot is still on but now greyed out and can't toggle it off, fast boot and something below fast boot are disabled~~
still have no idea why pure debian is able to load with secure boot on (permanently now I guess) and linux mint wasn't able to despite it being debian as well.... but debian 12 works so neat~~~~
bad thing tho about the "swipe to go back" is that I keep almost doing that while trying to scroll down~~ could just use the arrow keys but got so used to using the touchpad to scroll ...

yk the deeper into game modding you get and wading through the jungle of cores, script extenders, tweaks, and requirements upon requirements of bases, only for a stray hotfix update to tramble this house of cards and now every mod in the familytree needs to be updated.
Really makes you grow to appreciate good old replacer mods. Just a simple mesh swap.

Windows: the end user shall not be able to do anything. They own a license key and are the admin on their own system? Yeah we don't care, you still don't get access. Suffer, I guess. And no, we won't actually answer your questions.
Linux: Here is your chance to completely fuck up some things - but you can also do really cool stuff! Sink or swim. We hope you don't drown? Just ask the community, someone will help you. Have fun!

windows is so desperate for people to use microsoft edge that they changed their lock screen thing, which is a bunch of images of nature and it had a button for saying 'i like this image!' or 'i dont like this image!' and i liked saying i like the images because i did
but they changed it so that if you press 'i like this image!' it actually now says 'i like this image! i would like to learn more about it!' so if you press that button, once you log into your computer it automatically opens a microsoft edge search for the location from the image
bitch

The annoying thing about Linux I am finding is that you seem to always need to have a second Linux to fix it when the first Linux stops working. Anyway I think I have finally set up my fstab so it won't block boot if my raspberry pi has a funny feeling about its USB external hard drives...

It is done (enough)!
I would hype it up more but this is really really simple. It randomly generates a set of symbols, colors, and a word, and then the expected thing to do with those is you draw some sort of character based off the result you get. So it's just an art challenge toy thingy.
There are also some practical features like you can lock parts of the result in place to rerandomize the rest, or hide parts of the generation you don't care about (like if you want to pick your own colors or hate the words being there)
You can try it out over on itch.io!
It should run in browser, but there's also a downloadable version for Windows if you want to use it offline. (No mac/linux versions for now, because I don't have appropriate computers to test those on and I...don't want to deal with mac's developer accounts or whatever their problem is...)
Here's something I made from one of the results I got for the sake of example:
Tumblr media
(It's a bit of a rushed drawing sorry I just wanted to get the actual generator out there)
I hope everyone has fun with it :]

I feel really dumb~~~
all this crap about not being able to install linux on my windows computer cause of a windows update somehow bricking secure booting into linux (eshim verification error; something has gone horribly wrong) "system shutdown"
for the longest time I didn't know how to fix it and now feel really dumb; but also really relieved that I have my gaming computer running linux again~~!!
and my function keys ACTUALLY WORK~~~!!!
how did I not realize this sooner tho? all I had to do was go into the BIOS settings by spamming escape, going to setup for the bios, going to security, scrolling all the way down to where secure boot was buried, and turn that off... I turned fast boot off too cause I didn't know what it did or does, I just assume it tries to help you boot into windows faster.
pardon me for yelling but; HOW DID I NOT EVER NOTICE THAT OR THINK TO DO THAT??? I thought it was a more serious problem~~ unless secure boot is more important than I think it is.....
I FEEL STUPID BUT AM ALSO REALLY EXCITED AND HYPED TO BE ABLE TO RUN LINUX ON THIS MACHINE AGAIN~~~~!!!!! I NEVER THOUGHT I'D BE ABLE TO RUN LINUX ON HERE EVER AGAIN~~~!!
and in protest I will never run windows on this machine ever again~~~
also for some reason on my machine's bios hitting the escape key before boot starts a menu where you can choose where you want to boot from, instead of the setup easy mode thing where you change the boot order of stuff, tho you can do that but idk if it actually works or not.... cause hitting escape takes you to the boot menu, then setup to enter the BIOS instead of taking you immediately to the bios.... :/ I don't get it.... it used to go straight to the BIOS i thought~~
suck it microsoft~~~~
it is late plz help me, lol
seriously I was fully expecting the install to fail with secure boot off. stuff had failed so often that I just expected it to fail, but when the disk booted and I begun the install.... I didn't expect it to boot at all cause I didn't know that was the problem.... pleasantly surprised when debian actually boots and works fine~~~
BACK ON LINUX BABY~~~~~~ LET'S GOOOOOOO~~~~~~

ok let's not blame individuals here- this is microsofts fault.
the problem is Microsoft ending win10 support. they are the ones who are removing large amounts of functionality from all those devices that cannot update.
is Linux an option? sure. but there are plenty of those 240 mil who cannot switch because they rely on programs that aren't available on Linux and cannot feasibly switch to an alternative (whether because one does not exist or would not preserve previous data etc). those people are still being fucked over by windows no matter what they do and they shouldn't be blamed for this bullshit. there is no environmentally responsible and functional choice in that situation and it is entirely because of microsoft. It is not 'all because people don't wanna switch to a Linux distro' because that wouldn't even be a consideration if it weren't for win10 being discontinued.
I talked about the problem of Windows system requirements being too damn high before, and how the windows 10 to 11 jump is especially bad. Like the end of Windows 10 is coming october 2025, and it will be a massive problem. And this article gives us some concrete numbers for how many computers that can't update from win10 to 11.
And it's 240 million. damn. “If these were all folded laptops, stacked one on top of another, they would make a pile 600 km taller than the moon.” the tech analysis company quoted in the article explains.
So many functioning computers that will be wasted. And it's all because people don't wanna switch to a Linux distro with sane system requirements and instead buy a new computer.
Like if you own one of these 240 million windows 10 computers, Just be an environmentally responsible non-wasteful person and switch that computer to Linux instead of just scrapping it because Microsoft says it's not good enough.
