Postcard confirming my membership in the Working Holiday singles series from Arlington, VA-based label Simple Machines, postmarked October 22, 1992.
I wrote a little bit about subscribing to the Working Holiday series in my last week’s post about a Simple Machines mailer, and here is the confirmation postcard. Apparently I was “Drone #306″ to sign up in October 1992. According to the Discogs page for the box set collecting all 12 7″ singles, there were “approximately 650 subscribers of the series.” So I was a real middle-of-the-pack adopter.
Unlike the monthly singles issued by Calvin Johnson’s band The Go Team (no exclamation point, thank you) on his K Records label in 1989, this 1993 multi-band series from Simple Machines made it past September. In fact, they did in fact release twelve records total, once for each month. Though I do recall many of those releases arriving quite beyond their corresponding months, as is often the case with such endeavors.
However, one teaser here they weren’t quite able to deliver on was regarding a couple of the advertised participants. While Lois Maffeo (”of Courtney Love”) did indeed contribute to the July single, neither Kathleen Hanna nor the aforementioned Calvin Johnson ended up providing any songs to the series. But hey, you probably have more than a few records by those two in your collection anyway, right?

Simple Machines with Legos
Simple Machines with Legos
Tumblr media
Today we decided to build simple machines with Legos. The idea came up when we were making a construction site. My son said it must be really difficult for the construction people to carry the bricks up & down all the time! That made think of teaching him about the pulley system. And since we are learning about Pulley why not just get introduced to all the simple machines!
So what are Simple…

Mailer/catalog for Arlington, VA-based record label Simple Machines, summer 1993.
This is one of many flyers from Simple Machines in my paper goods collection, as I was a frequent mail-order customer. In fact, I was a subscriber to the “Working Holiday” series referenced here. Subscribers received a two-band, split 7″ single for each month in the year, plus a year-end wrap-up package with a poster, calendar and a nifty box in which to store all that vinyl.
Also listed in this flyer are tour details for Simple Machines house band Tsunami. They were real musical road warriors in their heyday, as every Simple Machines mailing seemed to contain a new batch of Tsunami tour dates.
Another item that caught my eye was the “Simple Machines Tool Set,” a series of affordable cassette releases featuring “music that is insanely great, but relatively obscure.” While I was an ardent collector of the label’s music on vinyl, I was less enthused about cassettes. So I think the only tape I ended up buying was the one by Geek (pre-Tsunami).
However, there is one cassette in this list that has vaulted from obscurity, at least for mega-fans of a certain Seattle grunge band:
no 3  pocket watch - late ten songs by drummer dave (ex-scream and now uh...nevermind, where he plays all the instruments.
Yes, that would be an early solo project by Dave Grohl of Nirvana, and later Foo Fighters fame. And of course this tape has gone from affordable ($3.50 at time of release) to collectible. It was last sold on Discogs a couple of months ago for a staggering 100 times more ($350.00).
