Black Women in the Animating World

In a previous blog, Black Women Animate, founded by Taylor Shaw, was discussed and upon revisiting the field of animation, this blog will be taking shorter previews of various Black women in the animating world. By no means an autobiography of these individuals, this blog will act as a means of bringing to light multiple talented animators and artists, bringing attention to their work and ventures in animation, but condensed into short snippets.

Pilar Newton is the CEO and founder of PilarToons, LLC, a production company that specializes in animation, illustration, and design based in Brooklyn, New York. Newton graduated with a degree from Rhode Island School of Design and has worked on a number of projects, from Cartoon Network’s Courage the Cowardly Dog to MTV’s Daria, and is currently pursuing a master’s degree at the School of Visual Arts. Her company has worked with companies such as Homer Learning, Sirius Thinking, Nickelodeon, Ted-Ed, Search Films, Story Corp, as well as others.

Mia Lee is a Chicago-based artist who has had work featured on Adult Swim and whose portfolio includes designs for Nike, Kith, and Timberland. She has met with multiple executives in animation and production making sure to meet with those who want to hear from young people of color. She is a newcomer to the animating world but is already making waves through her artistry and networking talent, landing her jobs and even allowing herself to pursue successful passion projects picked up by famous networks.

Monique Henry-Hudson was born and raised in Queens, New York, and has used her community as inspiration for her work. After being asked to create the “Black in Animation” panel for Blerd City Con in Brooklyn in 2018, she became the founder of DiverseToons, an organization that highlights women of color in multi-media. DiverseToons works at emphasizing the importance of diversity in the animation industry and provides a platform for Black artists and people of color to share their passions and career experiences while also giving resources to their communities. DiverseToons has also partnered with Women in Animation’s Student Branch in 2018, connected even more women and non-binary people of color in animation.

Sonya Carey has cemented herself in technical animation and is considered the only Black woman to do so. Her past credits include Disney’s The Princess and the Frog,” “The Proud Family,” and “Winnie the Pooh,” and she is positioned as the leader of her team as Head of Studio Operations at Portfolio Entertainment in Toronto. After high school, she moved to Los Angeles then got married when she finished college. After getting married, couldn’t work for a year and during that year, she got a computer and did desktop animations for fun, unknowingly catapulting her career in the industry. These desktop animations resulted in her taking classes at UCLA and ultimately getting a job at MetroLight Studios working on “Ren and Stimpy,” the beginning of her famous career. She then ran the digital side of the company Toon Boom for ten years then moved onto 3D animation for ToonBox before going back to 2D at Portfolio Entertainment. She also ran her own studio for some time called Make a Scene.

Carole Holliday works as a storyboard artist, director, and is the founder of Crowded Metro Films. She attended the California Institute of the Arts and graduated with a BFA in animation, pursuing storyboarding with her degree. She has worked on films “Oliver and Company” (1988) and “The Little Mermaid” (1989) as an animation assistant before starting her career in storyboarding with “A Goofy Movie” (1995) while also being a story artist for “The Pince of Egypt” (1998) and “Tarzan” (1999). She has also worked as a character design supervisor and moved up to directing an animated short for DisneyToon Studio’s “Mickey’s Twice Upon a Christmas.” More recently, she has done storyboard revisions on Disney’s “Sofia the First,” and has been working on storybooks. She even has her own profile on the official Walt Disney website for all of the work she has done with them.

Lisette Titre-Montgomery is a video game artist and designer who graduated with a degree in computer animation from Miami International University of Art and Design in 2000. She was inspired to study computer animation after watching “Toy Story” (1995) and decided to go to school for it. Her first animation job was working as a character model for the game Freekstyle which helped her land a job as a senior character and special effects artist at EA Games in around 2005. She then worked on games like Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2007 and helped developed The Simpsons Game, The Godfather II, and Dante’s Inferno. She ultimately left EA Games in 2011 and went on to become the lead artist at Blackbone Entertainment where she worked on Zombie Apocalypse: Never Die Alone and Midway Arcade Origins. Titre-Montgomery later returned to EA Games in 2013 to work on games like Dance Central 3 and The Sims 4. She then started working as the manager of the art and computer animation department for the company Ubisoft in around 2015. Titre-Montgomery was also invited to the White House LGBTQ Tech and Innovation Briefing in 2016 and the following year became the art manager at Double Fine Productions, working on Psychonauts 2. Lisette Titre-Montgomery is also a member of Blacks in Gaming which is a nonprofit networking and collaboration group for African Americans in the gaming industry.

Although this blog does not go as in-depth into these trendsetters, game-changers, or trail-blazers in the animation community as it should, it acts as a small list of Black women animators that has made big waves in the industry as a whole. Their work in the field has allowed countless young women of color to believe that they can achieve their dreams in animation and allow them to have role models to look up to as inspiration. There may not be nearly as many Black female animators but the number is slowly growing and they are leaving their print on animation as a whole and that should be paid attention to.

All buildings are fully furnished, the ones that are households have characters living there, most of them have jobs already. All characters trades match they’re personalities. No CC, only one pack (get famouse) all builds and characters are made by me (gihzonzin on the gallery). Some buildings have moveobjects but not all of them. The file is completely playable and I really enjoyed it. Del sol valley is completely empty but I’m still thinking about putting more Disney stuff there (I take suggestions).

In a no!kira world, both fem!L and fem!light have a crush on misa. how do they try to impress her?

Beyond Birthday “accidentally” (its totally on purpose, he just doesn’t want to admit it) gets involved with the Kira case, and he and Misa become friends while they both annoy light.

Light Yagami wakes up in his teenage bedroom after he died at the Yellow Box warehouse. He still has all his memories, and it’s exactly one day before he originally found the death note.

The Kira case ended years ago, the Wammy’s House is shut down. Only very few of the original Wammy’s kids are still in touch with each other. Linda hasn’t talked to anyone from Wammy’s in years. One day, Near knocks on the front door of her atelier in LA.

Light Yagami is for whatever reason a Wammy’s kid. (Pre-canon, so not even LABB has happened yet, and we’re ignoring the timeline, so L, Light, Beyond, and the other Wammy’s kids (Near, mello, matt, linda) are all the same age.) Chaos ensues.

Fantasy!AU. The noble knight Light Yagami was tasked with slaying the “evil” monster Ryuk. On his journey through a fantasy land while trying to find and defeat the beast he meets many people, like the cutesy goth witch Misa Amane, the baker’s son L Lawliet (Watari’s the baker) and his twin Beyond Birthday, or the group of 4 students from a wealthy orphanage (Wammy’s House is the orphanage, Linda, Matt, Mello, and Near are the students).

Eldritch Terrors of The Magnus Archive as rated by me, now finished with season two (sequel post to). Cut for length.

The Eye: 10/10. I still know where my bread is buttered. Incidentally, when they held that Intervention and Elias gave Jon the CCV tapes like “maybe these will finally reassure you”, it was the equivalent of it my dog half-destroyed my backpack while rooting around it it for food and I pulled her away and gave her a stern talking to and then a sandwich, like “maybe this will stop you from being hungry.” Jon is a knowledge beagle. Side note: kind of took my suggestion for a performer who finds themselves Watched with that newswoman, but not quite as I’d wanted.

The Stranger: 7/10. Notsha was pretty good. I quite liked the taxidermy (same flowery smell as Sarah the noise tech from Melanie’s hospital ep, so her origin is settled, ish! Look forward to seeing her again.) More importantly, I remembered that one of the scariest nightmares I’ve ever had involved me coming home to signs that there had been an intruder in the house and finding that they’d made nearly perfect copies of all my stuffed animals and left them on the bed with the real ones - like they’d meant to replace them but didn’t have the time, maybe. And I could tell which ones were real, were loved and mine, and which were soulless copies with colors just slightly off and eyes slightly duller, but I knew, looking at them all, that no one else would be able to tell. And that’s the Stranger all over, isn’t it? The NotThem specifically - except instead of replacing the semi-imaginary friends you have slept with every night of your life, whose presence is an eternal reliable soft warm hug and whom you named one by one and gave personalities like pieces of your very self, it goes for, like, your cousin. Good concept, amateur execution relative to the terror my young mind cooked up in the wake of a Winnie-the-Pooh episode with alternate, evil New Jerseyean versions of Tigger, Piglet, and Pooh.

The Distortion: 9/10. Points for being the first entity to utilize the internet, and just...consistently being peak Cheshire Cat. I fucking love Michael every time he appears, even when what he’s doing is fucking with people just to see what happens (and, please note the title “Liar”: definitely wanted Jon to meet Leitner and definitely has an angle other than For The Lulz here. But it might be, well, upside-down and inside-out and twisted like a broken elbow relative to anyone else’s angle, so possibly we don’t even need to worry about it! Possibly.

The Flesh: 6/10. Solid, reliable performance from the cannibalism crowd this season, and connection with boneturners confirmed. MEAT IS ME.

The Slaughter: 9/10 god i just love Melanie King so much, okay. “It was like once I’d seen that there was a path to stray from, I couldn’t unsee it, and I couldn’t ignore the call from the woods all around.” Actually that’s more Eye, probably - 7/10 to the Slaughter, I wish we had more but also there may be only so much you can do with mindless bloodthirst; 15/10 to Melanie King, embodiment of “’[X]’s haunted’ ‘What?’ *cocks pistol, walking out* ‘[X]’s haunted.’” Also, I spent most of “Grifter’s Bone” thinking it was probably the Stranger but when the woman turned out to have mauled a neighbor and then herself with a hammer, I gasped, “Slaughter!” delightedly. Music of war!

The Web: 7/10. Won this season’s award for creepiness, I think? Annabelle Cane is clutch, y’all. Also, the grudge match with Desolation over Hilltop House is fun. ALSO, who the HELL is Adulard Dekker; I met him in a fic or two also and I have questions?? Anyway, shoutout to the Web for frequently reining the others in, actually - spiders killing worms, binding the NotThem...agreeing by uneasy truce to help raise Desolation’s...whatever exactly Agnes Montague is...

The Desolation: 6/10. Most interesting by far is that the Desolation/Cult of the Lightless Flame is the only beings we’ve seen using I would call “sympathetic magic” - whatever they were doing with those pictures of Gertrude + her hairs in that Scottish grove, some ritual with Agnes and spiders once her tree fell. TMA doesn’t seem to have much of a “magic system”, but this indicates...something with rules.

The Lonely: 6/10. Points for most interesting and long-term - both in practice and effect - destruction of a single human’s psyche, in “Personal Space.” That’s craftmanship, that is. Pretty boring season otherwise, aside from Peter showing up to lose a bet on whether a man would survive a brush with the Buried.

The Buried: 5/10. I dunno, it’s still just not doin’ it too much for me. I do love how I can’t figure out if Katerina Gorka is lying about her experience on the train or if she just...hasn’t noticed that she’s definitely become some sort of dirt-shedding avatar of death underground.

The Darkness: 3/10. Weak! Showing! Who CAN’T make the tunnels underneath an ancient church crypt creepy? Oh, wow, you also killed a handful of police officers and a guy in jail who nearly....god, I so desperately want to know exactly what Robert Montauk was trying to do. Raynard implied that he’d tried to kill the Darkness? Ballsy.

The Vast: 9/10. So, when I wrote that obviously autobiographical bit in the s1 ratings, I was really just remembering “Freefall”, which didn’t describe the Vast much like that at all. I listened back at “Page Turner”, the first Leitner, which was Vast, and it had some similarities that might have been bouncing around my subconscious...but the reason I checked back was that “Literary Heights” had a lot of similarities to the autobiographical bit I wrote, which I wrote BEFORE listening to that episode at ALL...9/10 because that’s actually the most unnerved I’ve been all podcast.

The Corruption: 4/10. Weak too, tbh, particularly relative to the magnificent Jane Prentiss. Introduced, I think, though, the concept of objects that can be wards (John Snow’s syringe) instead of harbringers, which is very interesting. Concept: Corruption episode based on rotting food, please? At a fancy restaurant or at a dump or just in someone’s house, everything going bad...maybe a dig somewhere at how much supermarkets just throw away...

The Hunt: 5/10. Vampires still neat. More to the point: Me, standing outside Jonathan Sims (the reality one)’s house at 2am, blasting Schubert’s “Erlkonig” from a boombox while shouting: GIVE! ME! WILD! HUNT! GIVE!! ME!! WILD!! HUNT!!

The End: 5/10. Did, uh. Did Mary Keay kill and partially flay her own son, binding his uneasy ghost to a page made from his own skin, and then give that page to Gertrude as a weird passive-aggressive present. I guess that book might be Flesh instead, but it seems more End and I just have to ask. Nobody should answer, but between scattered spoilers and what episodes I’ve heard, this is...an impression I have formed... The End didn’t do much at all but it always has decent credit just for being The End.

Questions about Childhood

(1/21/19) These questions are pretty general. I’ll expand more when we talk in person, don’t worry.

Childhood

Favorite childhood memory? My mom was a single mother for a while. I remember one night my brother and I were eating dinner and obviously not loving it based on her comment. Mom said “If you eat all of your dinner, I have a surprise for you both.” Of course, that got us to eat faster than we ever have! She pulled out a new coloring book and crayons for both of us! Mine was 101 Dalmatians. It was such a little thing, but it sticks into my mind as a sacrifice for her. Being a single mother she didn’t have a lot of money, but she still chose to get us something. It was just really special to me.

Favorite board game? Monopoly. Hands down. All day long. The original with real money. None of the card thing that’s super annoying. I just love the game play, bartering, doesn’t take a lot of strategy like Risk, etc.

Favorite children’s show? As a kid? Hmm...I remember watching power rangers with my brother. I liked Tom and Jerry. We watched Animaniacs and Looney Tunes. Man, this was a hard one, ha!

Favorite toy as a child? My mom always told me I loved playing with blocks as a small child. I know I loved playing with Barbies. I remember playing legos with my brother. I think legos were my favorite. I always built a house, always a standard four walls with a roof, but it was fun, ha! My brother is super creative, though. He built lots of complicated things. I think I just wanted to play so I could watch what he built.

Favorite teacher? My high school Algebra, Pre-Calculus, and Calculus teacher. She was AMAZEBALLS! Super fun, nerdy but was actually funny, you could tell she cared a lot, and she had a ton of different ways to explain something.

Favorite thing about school? Learning in general. I’m a learner. I can learn anything if the teacher inspires me.

Favorite age? First thought when reading this question: 30. Right now, I’m seriously living my best life. I’m comfortable with who I am, I’m confident professionally, and people actually take me seriously. I have a husband who I love and loves me. It’s pretty great.

Since it’s a childhood series, though, I’d have to say four or five years old. No responsibilities, all I had to do was play, and I didn’t have to worry about school yet.

Favorite Christmas present? I’m going to adapt this to favorite birthday present because that’s what I thought of first. When I was 17-18 my brother bought me a Bible. He went to the store, looked through all of them, and picked one out just for me he knew I would love. I still have it. I’ll never get rid of it.

Christmas, I think was a cross necklace hubby got for me when we first started dating. It was special since he doesn’t have a faith in particular. It was very much a sign of support for my beliefs.

Favorite Dr. Seuss book? Hmm...I think Oh the Places You’ll Go. It’s a good reminder to not stay stagnant.

Favorite Halloween costume you've worn? My mom made me a dalmatian costume when I was about seven. I also was princess Jasmine once--she’s my favorite princess, well favorite Disney movie. I think Belle is my favorite princess--I liked that she was so intelligent. This last halloween my mom made me a Wilma Flintstone costume! It was so great!

Favorite lunchbox snack? A bag of chips. Nacho Cheese Doritos. So delicious. I can’t keep them in the house. I will eat the whole bag and not even feel bad about it.

Favorite Winnie the Pooh character? Tigger! He’s so positive and happy and fun. I just love him.

Favorite thing to do during recess? I liked to play 4 Square. That’s so weird and I have no idea why, I just loved it! I also like the swings. It’s my favorite playground activity. I love the feeling of almost “flying”.

Favorite superhero? Batman. He’s so dark and mysterious.

Favorite video game? The Sims. I love it! I love making my sims and giving them a house, and a job. I’m the type of person who doesn’t cheat and give them a mansion. I start from the bottom and only buy things when I have the money for it.

But sometimes I do give them a ton of money and give them the biggest house. It’s just not as fun, there’s no challenge.

And now for the embarrassing one...I like Pokemon, eek!! The original with 150 pokemon. Not like they have now with 2 million. I just liked playing the games, catching them, fighting, the challenges, etc. It’s just fun! I’m such a nerd, ha!

Favorite color Power Ranger? Pink! She could do back handsprings and I’ve always wanted to do those. And she was pretty.

Favorite fairy tale? Um...Cinderella? Not sure, I don’t remember many fairy tales.

Favorite game to play outside? Gosh, I don’t remember. This is a hard one. Tag? I think I liked playing Tag, or jump rope. I liked to hula hoop, too. I hula hooped for 45 minutes once. I don’t recommend it, my abs hurt for a long time after that, ha!

Dream job: General Practitioner / Family doctor. Relationship status: Single Pets: Okay man get ready my dudes. Species, Oldest to Youngest. Pearl, a mean and sarcastic black lab she's 8. Benny, a buckaroo, nanny-dog Yorkie who acts like he has the hardest job but in reality he creates his own stress, he's 8. Finnegan, a fickle, vindictive and buff little Chihuahua, he's 7. Opal, a big ol' sweety face white lab 1/4 chow mix, and the daughter of Pearl and Bear (whos no longer with us) thats really shy, she's 7. Her Brother, SweetPea, a freckley doofus black lab 1/4th chow mix he also is 7. Puck, a wierd little weeny/chihuahua stray we found in front of the grocery store, hes the sweetest and nicest and dumbest little thing you'll meet, we found him in i think 2013 or 14 and he was barely 10 months when we found him; so I think he may be 3 or 4 prob 4. Okay. Dogs done, onto cats. Riley, we got him after Milo and Otis but he's older. My brother thought it'd be a great idea to get a cat for his gf who is... Lets just say it wasnt a good idea. And so we ended up taking Riley after a huge escapade. He's a normal american tabby, he's like 6 I think, he's super quiet, and a bit of a dick, but some how won the love of Otis and Simon. Milo, a scared can't-get-right zoolander Lilac Siamese, he's 5. His big ol' orange tabby brother Otis, he's large, and pushy and also a bit of a dick and very gay, he's also 5. Simon our newest edition an eternal kitten and a very talkative little fuc- ...booger he loves Riley and heating blankets, windows, and anything he can tear up, he's a Balenese which just means a thicc ass Siamese, he's 1 and still super tiny. Cats done. On to birds. Buddy a sweet little Indian Runner duck very dainty and bossy, she's I think 6. Bertha, a big ass egg layer chicken she also is thicc but very sweet and talkative, she's 4. Her sister Trudy also lays eggs she red cant remember her breed but a chicken is a chicken she's sassy and talks too much but is pretty cool, she's also 4. Ester, a beautiful black and white lacey chicken her, and her sister, Agnes, don't have much of a personality that I've seen, they both are 2 I think. Okay! Thats it, on paper it's a lot but when you're living with them it's nothing.
