⋆ ˚ 。 ☁︎ ˚ 𝗦𝗜𝗡𝗞𝗜𝗡𝗚 ⋱⋮⋰ for anyone. takes place 𝗔𝗟𝗢𝗡𝗚𝗦𝗜𝗗𝗘 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗥𝗜𝗩𝗘𝗥.
as frosty morning grass prickled his fingertips, taewook let a warm sigh fall upon his knees, bared by the frays in his jeans. he'd taken a brief pause from grinding railings at the campground to sit by the river and mourn the remaining distance between he and the coming summer. he may have been a may baby, but his heart belonged to the hottest months of the year.
wookie turned his attention to the sound of the sincheon flowing by, the trickle of water somewhat slowed by the cold, and tugged his hoodie sleeves over his hands. his breath was an intermittent cloud of vapor in front of him, tinting his view in a hazy white — a sight he wasn't exactly unfamiliar with. he'd originally taken a seat to rest his ankles from the impactful landings they'd been taking, but at this point, taewook had all but fallen into a daydream. in an instant, his back was touching the grass, eyes and knees angled towards the sky. he spent a few moments watching clouds roll by, before a sudden voice snapped through his distraction like a thunder clap. "huh?" he mumbled, head turned toward the foggy figure. "who'sit?" came another hastened mumble, one of his eyes partially obscured by the hood scooped over his head.

South Korea's City of Daegu
A visit to South Korea's 3rd largest city, which is Daegu, offers an experience that would reflect Daegu's colorful ancient history, which involves dynasties and the tale of the three kingdoms.
According to history, the pioneer tribe in Daegu was called the Dalgubeol and they thrived in the hilly grounds of the city. It was also by this name that the Daegu was known for in the olden times. They initially occupied the lower hills and to defend themselves of any invasion by other nearby tribes they have decided to build walls made of earth mounds surrounding their residential area.
It was told that during the Ancient Times, people flocked to Daegu due to its abundant natural resources. The place is surrounded by two rivers called the Geumhogang River and the Sincheon River which is a branch of the former, which formed very spacious fields coupled with fertile soil. Various ancient pots and knives made of stone were discovered in Daegu that indicate existence of ancient locals throughout the prehistoric period.
Three kingdoms namely the Goryeo, Hubakje, and Silla were known to exist in Daegu. It was in this region that the famous battle called the "Dongsudaejeon" was staged by these kingdoms since the place was a significant strategic point for each of them. During the war, a general named Shin Sun-gyeom of the Silla kingdom was made famous by saving the life of "Wang-geon", King of Goryeo Kingdom fighting against the attacks of the Hubakje army when the Kingdom of Goryeo came to the aid of Silla Kingdom.
The dramatic event happened when Wang-geon was on the verged of getting killed in the Dongsu battlefield and General Shin came to the rescue by pretending to be the King in the way of wearing the King's helmet while running away attracting the soldiers of Hubakje to chase him leaving the real King out of harms way and was able to get back to his kingdom safely by wearing a soldier's uniform. After some time, Wang-geon was able to achieve his goal in unifying the three kingdoms leading to a new era of the history of Korea, establishing the Goryeo Dynasty.
Joseon Dynasty followed in 1392 after the successful reign of the Goryeo. During this time, population in Daegu continued to grow and the region developed into an agricultural capital in the province of Gyeongsang. It was also during this time that Daegu improved their educational policies by the introduction of the Chinese Confucianism.
In the present times Daegu achieves the reputation of being a major textile center in the country of Korea, as well as a hub for metal and machine industries. Although the city is considered highly urbanized, it still has that countryside feel, and it is able to maintain structures and places that commemorate the stories of the ancient times.

Goodbye
hey seoul sister ain’t that mister mister on the radio….
So, I have officially left Korea and it’s super bittersweet. Yea, I’ve missed home and the general cocoon of comfortableness that comes along with your first language being the dominant language where you live, but now that I’m off Korean soil, I’m pretty bummed. Looking back on my trip, I did some pretty amazing things and met some awesome people. All the Light Fellows at Sogang left Korea today and unlike last time I travelled abroad, I made sure that my plane wasn’t super early in the morning, so I was able to relax before my plane left. The last few days in Korea were kind of a blur because I was frantically trying to see and more importantly, eat, all the things that I loved. I also tried to say goodbye to the few people at Sogang that I became somewhat close with during the program. One of the girls who I sat across from in class for the past three months ended up getting dumped by her boyfriend on their one year anniversary and one week before her birthday. To add insult to multiple injuries, they live together and he wants her to move out soon. And to add salt to that insulted injury, he may have cheated? Unsure. Unclear. Seems that way though. So basically I and another one of my classmates spent the day before I left Seoul eating lunch and comforting our class friend on her birthday. I say all of this to give an example of how much I learned about the other people in my class and how close I may have become with them if my time there wasn’t so short. Actually, this is a pretty good place to do a review about Sogang. If I don’t do it now I’ll never do it.
Sogang Review: Basically, should you go to Sogang?
Whether you’re a Light Fellow or a random that happened upon my blog (how??), deciding which university to attend in Korea can be really hard seeing as besides some students who have Korean parents or university age friends in Korea, Korean Universities are a complete mystery. I knew nothing about any of the schools the Light Fellowship funded so I ended up asking Professor Lee-Smith which school she recommended. Without hesitation, she recommended Sogang. So, without hesitation, I chose Sogang and all-in-all, I don’t regret my decision. There were some cons, but I think the pros were more weighty, if not more plentiful, than the cons. So, here it goes:
Pros:
Location, location, location: That may sound like some crap a pedo-stach donning real estate agent in LA would say but it seriously applies here. Sogang is part of an area that specifically caters to the needs of university age students. Sogang and three other universities are all situated together, meaning that the food is cheaper, there are a lot of options and there’s always something happening on the weekends. If you’re anything like me and large gatherings of young people scare you, don’t be worried, Sogang is close enough to the action but far enough away that if you live somewhere close by you won’t be bombarded with noise all the time.
Focus on speaking: Sogang has a reputation for emphasizing speaking over reading and writing which I was initially pretty interested in because I think I can better my writing and reading at home. Here’s the thing: Sogang does deal with a lot of speaking, but mostly because your classmates are usually not native English speakers. Only one other girl in my class of 16-ish people spoke English natively and although there were some girls from Hong Kong, they preferred to speak in Cantonese. Since everyone has different native tongues, class has to be taught all in Korean (although many of the teachers know at least some English vocabulary if you want to ask them a specific word).
Homework load: there is barely any work. Seriously. Maybe one or two worksheets a day but besides that it’s just looking over the vocabulary for the next day. The low workload allowed me and the other Sogang Light Fellows to see as much of Seoul as possible without being hindered by grades. Actually, I found out halfway through the semester that homework doesn’t even count toward your final grade.
Cons:
Homework load: so I know just above I said this was a pro, but the type A in me can’t help but feel a bit cheated by the low work-load and general lack of challenge Sogang offered. On the one hand, I really appreciate that I was able to travel around the peninsula, go out to eat with friends and generally not worry about school when I wasn’t in class, but another part of me still thinks I could have come away with more Korean knowledge if my classes had been more difficult. I mean, I could have self-studied but...you know...
The classmates: I don’t really know how to say this, but I’m going to try anyway: some of the classmates at Sogang came to Korea for reasons that were so different from mine that it made it difficult for us to become close. I know that makes no sense, I’ll explain further: I’m not sure if this is a Sogang specific observation, but I did find that a surprisingly large portion of my classmates were in Korea because they loved Kpop or were interested in dating/marrying a Korean person (for a variety of reasons). Now, I know what this sounds like: me being a judgemental academic you-know-what, BUT just to put it in context, many of my Yale classmates at Seoul National University had different experiences. I’m not looking down on people for coming to Korea and wanting to integrate into Korean culture, which could naturally include dating Korean people and consuming Korean pop culture, I’m just saying that I feel like the low workload of Sogang attracts a certain population that makes socializing at the school a tad difficult. I came into Sogang with the mindset that I wanted to learn a foreign language, mostly for the heck of learning one, whereas a bunch of my classmates were actively trying to integrate into the culture, mainly through dating. Honestly, now that I’ve started writing this I realize it’s much harder to explain than I expected and maybe it’s just me not getting along with the certain individuals I happened across, but the constant focus on finding a Korean partner kept me at a distance from even the girls I spent the most time with from my Sogang class.
Okay, that’s enough about Sogang. Korean, you were so good to me. I can’t wait to come back.
Peace
