I can’t get this outta my head - spoilers below!
Tumblr media
This particular scene broke my heart in so many ways.
The way he tried to steady his hands to roll for himself - likely for the first time in decades since Stack did it for him - and has to accept that he can’t do it. Not without stack’s help.
How he rips the protection necklace Annie gave him off (I know it has a different name - so sorry I can’t remember what she called it!) as a physical sign that he has no interest in surviving what’s next.
Annie showing up and telling him to put out the smoke he had desperately needed so he could hold their daughter again?!?!
A literal puddle of tears
MBJ really cooked in this scene because ya girl was UNDONE. The action was amazing but it was the emotion he displayed, the flashbacks to earlier in the day from his perspective (or was that when Sammie and stack reunited or were there flashbacks in both - I need to see this again lol). It was one of MBJ’s best scenes in any movie he’s ever done. Truly phenomenal.

I think Sammie would have definitely tried to marry Pearline. The woman who saved his life, who told him to run, whos last song was one of pain as they killed their nightmare.
Sammie naming his place after Pearline, well, I just feel like that was his way of marrying her.
Of being able to play beside her again, to look up and honor her as he played his heart out. Sammie ran off with his blues and he kept Pearline in his heart the entire time. He didn't open a church, he opened an altar to those Sinners who needed music as much as they needed holy.
I also think those three scars he left with can mean so much. Of the three things he lost that night:
The Father, The Son, The Holy Spirit.
Smoke, Stack, and Pearline.
I don't know, I'm still processing things 🤷🏾‍♀️ it was such a good movie 😭

When you realise that Mary being the one who turned Stack is lowkey a representation of how she (very much unintentionally) and their relationship would have gotten him killed at some point if they hadn't been turned/survived the attack by the KKK-
From the moment we first meet Mary, we very quickly realise that she isn't afraid to speak her mind. That she matches Stack in this regard and is part of the draw between them. However, her boldness comes with a LOT of danger. Mainly for the fact that she racially passes. It is also heavily implied that Mary speaks the way she does because she is often given more leeway compared to those she considers family based on her physical appearance alone. As a result of this, she often doesn't think much of the consequences because, typically, she doesn't receive any. It's why she was so comfortable approaching Remmick and his companions, why she was so sure that nothing untoward would happen because that was what she had experienced as a passing individual.
This subconscious tendency to say whatever she wants, when she wants, is the most prevalent in the scene where she encounters Stack for the first time since they had separated, very openly and LOUDLY speaking about the sexual aspects of their relationship in a place where even the mention of a black man LOOKING at a white woman for too long could end in that man's murder, could end in HER being thrown in JAIL for sleeping with someone outside of her presented race, and she did all that where there are law enforcement officers hanging around at any given point.
I don't doubt that Mary deeply loved Stack. She grew up with him, was likely his childhood sweetheart and was genuinely very hurt by how he chose to end it. And likely genuinely just wanted to find a way they could be together like how they used to. But if said relationship, before the events of the film, was filled with moments like that? I do not blame Stack for deciding that it would be safer for the BOTH of them to be apart rather than together, regardless of how much he loved + adored her.

Sinners talk
I see some people talking about how Annie was dressed down or homely while the other women were more sexy. I disagree. Also sexy can be defined in so many ways…and yes of course the idea of ‘sexy’ is a personal thing…but lets get into this Annie supposedly being dressed homely crap…
Annie, for who she was, a wise down to earth conjure woman, was accurately styled in my opinion. Her costume design made complete sense to me. She’s working with the roots, communing with the ancestors, and as we see providing a service and tools (via her apothecary) for her community. All in the Mississippi Delta heat. Why would she be doing that in a sexy outfit or whatever. My 2x great grandmother from Georgia was an Annie, she had an apothecary and dressed in a similar way.
Annie’s clothing was pratical and fit her personality and the work she did. And can Queen Annie dress the f up if/when she wanted, yes! Did you see how hot she looked at the juke? Come on people. For who the women were, their ages, and where they were when we first saw them and why - i fully believe all the costuming was dead on.
I will shout about and defend this movie wholeheartedly. And as a Bipoc woman with southern, Caribbean, creole and Afro-indigenous (the Caddo of LA and Afro-Creek via my 2x great paternal grandpa) ancestry this film means something even deeper to me than just a casual viewer.
I will also defend and gush about Annie up and down. This is fully an Annie stan house okay.
And you know what, let me talk about Pearline too cause she’s getting judged for the same kind of shit Mary is getting a pass for. Am I saying cheating is right? No. But it’s obvious (and predictable) why Mary gets a pass and Pearline doesn’t. And to be clear, I don’t dislike Mary but whats happening here is very loud. People, with the quickness, call Pearline fast, but give Mary a pass. 🤦🏾‍♀️
I think, head canon time, Pearline was likely married to some older man she didn’t even choose (happened often back then). Maybe to some financial benefit for the family (the way shes dressed tells us she ain’t struggling as bad as some folks) but love was not part of this marriage and maybe she was unhappy but had to hide that. And that night at the Juke, and with Sammie, she could really let loose and be herself. She could shine and be youthful instead of the woman she was expected/forced to be (maybe earlier than she was ready for). I would have liked her to live, and see how her and Sammie would have played out.

More Sinners talk that I didn't see a lot of in the tag:
SPOILERS
‼️‼️‼️
I would have liked to see a little bit more of the Native Americans. Like. Did the lead vampire guy try to turn someone in their tribe and that's how they knew what he was or are they official vampire slayers/hunters? I know this is a movie centered around the Black Americans life/history - that they are the center of the movie.
But how can you add such great characters like that and then have them be so empty? Maybe that's not the right word but like you inserted this little thing (words are escaping me right now) and then it didn't really go anywhere - at least to me. Obviously it was the lead up to revealing the bad guy but... Come on.
They obviously knew of vampires because they knew to leave before the sun went down.
Also how did vampire guy GET to that house without burning? That house is in the middle of nothing.
I think I'm thinking too hard about this.

Id also like to add that when Sammie comes back in the morning to service, literally no one is asking where he came from/if anyone was with him/ why he's as visually fucked up as he is walking in to church WHILE EVERYONE ELSE AROUND HIM IS IN PRISTINE WHITE SUNDAY BEST/ where the rest of his guitar was (???)/ and to me personally, why did his mother listen to Jedidiah when he asked Sammie to come forward??? I get we are shown Sammie's fractured and conflicting state of mind when he enters the church, but commentary on how NO ONE in this 'community' reached out to him as he who's past them. He is already Other.
I also have thoughts on the fact that in this movie, everyone but the Choktaw died - showing that race didn't matter to death - but at the same time, only Smoke is seen at peace (understandably, duh!) and the only one to have an afterlife with his wife. Most movies with correlating themes have either both races or just the white folks being shown living happily in paradise after death, so showing that Annie and Smoke were the only ones able to be happy and safe in their deaths also leads to the entire tragedy of the story as well.
They were always going to die, but even if they were doomed from the beginning, does that not mean that without the supernatural singer others would/ souls not have been able to be peaceful in their afterlife/death??
I've been having SUCH a good time in the Sinners tag, reading so much interesting and insightful meta!
So here's my contribution—spoilers ahead.
The thing I can't stop thinking about is the horror *after* Sinners. Like something truly goddamn awful happened in this community and nobody knows!!! Like 50-60 people just DISAPPEARED overnight and everyone else just has to pick up the pieces???
Sammie knows, but he can't tell anyone. They probably know he knows something, but like...... there's just no explanation. No wonder he runs away to Chicago. Yes, blues is his dream but ALSO how could you stay home after that?
Maybe they think the Klan crashed the party and killed everyone? Since the next day someone will find Smoke and all those white Klan corpses there. But WHERE is Stack. Smoke and Stack are always together. And WHERE are the fifty+ other people who were at the party last night! There's absolutely no trace of them. It's mind boggling and mystifying and upsetting.
Grace and Bo never go home to Lisa. Annie will surely be missed by all the people who counted on her, for magic and food and being there. Cornbread doesn't go home to Therise and their baby on the way. Delta Slim was a staple in the community and he's just gone. Pearline and Mary both don't go back to their husbands. And repeat that over and over and over for everyone who was there and there's NO CLUE for where they could have gone.
What a traumatic thing to rip through this community. It's horrible. And I can't stop thinking about it.

Now why would you get on here and say this?!😩😭😭 If this is indeed canon, they both would’ve gotten to mourn each other. Smoke mourned Stack after Mary bit him and turned him, while Stack would’ve mourned Smoke the very next night because he can’t be out during the day. AND BURIED HIM ON TOP OF THAT (as someone else pointed out in another post that I had read and most likely reblogged)!!! Still not over the fact that both of them died and just did it differently. 💔💔💔
saw that the jukejoint was boarded up and locked at the end because stack was still inside, so i realized that he probably watched smoke die.
maybe when night came and he could come out, he went over to his brother’s body and held him. spoke to him, maybe even cursed him out for not letting him turn him. he just holds him. all night. until the sun comes up.
his dead brother in his arms. maybe that was the last time he saw his brother and the last time he saw the sun.

One of my favorite aspects of Sinners how they use the musical scenes to build tension. Because they start out small, with just Sammy and Stack in the car, then the performance with Slim at the train station, and then working up to the scenes in the barn.
The first juke sequence is the most visually stunning, of course. It's chaotic but overwhelmingly positive, beautiful, and joyous. When we move to Pearline's song, things start to darken. The thumping stomps are timed with the twins beating the man with the loaded dice. We've already seen violence in the film, but this is a steep escalation intentionally set to music.
Then, we think the tension is going down when the ******** show up (no spoilers 🤫), but they are so immediately unsettling that we never feel at ease. Their music is sweet and their voices are soothing, but it's a front, one that fractures pretty quick but shatters completely with the Rocky Road to Dublin.
Rocky Road is a perversion of the first juke scene, twisting the joyful chaotic energy of the dance into a masterfully disturbing parody, where the full evil and madness (and twisting of spirituality) of the ******** is put on display.
It's just such a good way to build the narrative. I love love love how serious they were about making music the keystone of every filming decision.
