Cold sintering may rescue plastic, ceramics, battery components from landfills
Recycling does not necessarily prevent an item from eventually ending up in a landfill, according to Enrique Gomez, interim associate dean for equity and inclusion and professor of chemical engineering in the Penn State College of Engineering. Instead, recycling simply delays its end of life. Plastic bottles that are recycled and then turned into carpet, for example, eventually end up in the landfill when the carpet gets worn out and is thrown away. However, cold sintering—the process of combining powder-based materials into dense forms at low temperatures through applied pressure using solvents—allows for materials to be recycled again and again. "That's the idea with cold sintering: you can take two or more materials that were destined for the landfill, combine them and create a composite, and recycle the composite again and again, without a loss in performance," Gomez said.

When Moni is extremely nervous or scared, she’ll twiddle with her necklace or her hair and look away from what’s making her antsy. She’s held onto her necklace before every Overblot battle and is grateful that somehow it hadn’t broken off during those fights or usual shenanigans she supervises. Monica puts a brave face on every time she goes to fight the overblot students. The only telltale sign is her absentmindedly holding her necklace. But when she’s not in those deadly situations, Monica plays with the ends of her hair and looks away from whoever is making her scared or nervous.

Zane LOVES LOVES cats! He especially loves how chill they are and independent felines are. He thinks that if he were an animal, he’d either be a cat or a dog. Either an orange street cat or a pit bull if he had to choose. He thinks dogs are cute, huge cuddle bugs that, despite their looks, love to cuddle! He’d love to have some sort of pet to bring along with him and confide in when they're alone. Zane’s also is pretty good at math, it clicks with him, and the young man brags about it a lot.

Shu gets extremely severe headaches around his horns and the back of his head. The pain comes in waves and randomly. He tries to get it under control so that his students and coworkers don’t worry about him. But it is noticeable if he gets them in class, he’ll pause and continue with the lesson, but his actions lack his typical enthusiasm. The reason for his headaches was that when his powers got sealed away by his brothers, it was a painful and bloody process, but the traces of his magical bloodline were his horns and the bits of magic he could produce now. He’s gotten used to the pain but it makes his personality become muted.

Leif’s stepbrothers names are Conrad and Derek. They have a hot and cold relationship. While they’re not inherently mean or rude to him, their personalities don’t match up, but they have mutual respect as brothers and people. Conrad regards him as warmer at times, but it can be hard to connect due to their differing upbringing. But Derek and some other high-standing families would sometimes have snide things to say about his ‘lower-class personality.’

Rosealio’s white hair is a recessive gene in the family and is from his grandpa, that was in a high society court that also had white hair and green strands. His late grandfather, however, was regarded as a madman in his later life and never taken seriously. Still, Rosie didn’t care about how “crazy” his grandfather was and loved him very much. His dodo doll is his last gift from his grandpa before his passing.

B₄C–TiB₂ composite ceramics with adjustable mechanical and electrical properties
In recent years, electro-conductive composite ceramics have gradually become a research hotspot in the functionalization of structural ceramics. However, the improvement of conductivity is generally achieved at the cost of increasing the content of conductive phases or sacrificing the mechanical properties of the composite ceramics. Therefore, achieving high conductivity of composite ceramics at low conductive phase content is of great significance. In a recent study, electrically conductive B4C–TiB2 composite ceramics containing only 15 vol% TiB2 were prepared by a two-step spark plasma sintering process, and their mechanical and electrical performances were adjusted by the optimal particle size coupling of raw material powders. A team of material scientists led by Songlin Ran from Anhui University of Technology in Maanshan, China recently prepared highly electro-conductive B4C–TiB2 ceramics by a two-step spark plasma sintering method.
