As of midnight, Sherlock Holmes enters the public domain, so here's my very official poem declaring him canonically gay and autistic:
"Watson, I am gay and autistic," said Holmes.
"Yeah, no, I like. Got that," replied Watson.
that's all good night

Sherlock Holmes, despite being one of the most adapted characters in media, is almost always characterized differently than in the source material. Despite having a habit of unnerving people with his deductions, and his distaste for the police force, Sherlock Holmes is canonically good at reassuring people, gets along amicably with clients, and has an affectionate relationship with Watson. However, he is almost always adapted to be extremely stoic and unable to interact with people in a regular fashion, as is a common trope with genius characters. Whether being smart but socially inept is a caricature of Savant Syndrome or a result of an effort to create flaw in a character whose skills were not balanced out with much deficit, it is clear that Sherlock Holmes has been the subject of much transformation in the public consciousness, straying from the envisioning of Sir Arthur Ignatius Conan Doyle. Is this modified personality better, creating a more well-rounded and interesting character? Or, does it instead stereotype and boil down the traits that, left alone, made Sherlock Holmes the quintessential star of detective fiction, restorting to trite and digestible cliché? In this essay I will

For those who have never seen Jeremy Brett's depiction of Sherlock Holmes, the entire collection of his Sherlock Holmes episodes / movies (from 1984-1994) is available to watch for free on Youtube.
I highly recommend watching these if you are a fan of the original Sir. Arthur Conan Doyle Sherlock Holmes stories. These are (in my opinion) the most faithful retellings and they are very well-acted.

Jeremy Brett With Dame Jean Conan Doyle ⭐️⭐️
“He was charming. He was the only actor who played Sherlock Holmes who took the trouble to get in touch with me and to come and see me.
All along, he would ring me up and ask my opinion. Jeremy was trying to do his very best to be faithful to my father’s stories.” (Dame Jean Conan Doyle)

Back at it again with the weird Sherlock shit from the original cannon
- Sherlock becomes a beekeeper
- Sherlock spends two years in Tibet and meets the Dali Llama
- Sherlock describes the countryside of Cambridgeshire as "flat as the palm of Watson's hand". The description is accurate.
- they foil an attempted murder by using a wax model of Sherlock. Incidentally, if you visit the Sherlock Holmes museum on Baker Street, you'll find a bunch of incredibly creepy life-size figures of the characters. The staff think they're haunted. I asked.
- to sneak through a dark house, Sherlock and Watson hold hands. Watson keeps commenting on it
- to establish an alibi, a man invites some guy to his house, gets him drunk, changes the clocks and shouts that it's 1am, when in fact it's much earlier. Presumably, this guy doesn't wear a watch
- A visitor to 221b says that it's a long carriage ride from Baker Street to his home in Hampstead. It's 3 miles
- the final appearance of Sherlock Holmes is in 1927, which means if he were real he could have met David Attenborough
- the line "elementary, my dear Watson" is never said in the original stories, but Sherlock often calls Watson "my dear"
- unlike in Sherlock (bbc), we do find out how Sherlock escapes Moriarty. The two tussle, then Moriarty falls off a cliff whilst sort of running backwards through the air like a cartoon. Sherlock hides on a ledge for a bit
That's all for now, but I'm sure I'll find more bonkers shit

As much as he can be bombastic as Holmes the subtlety that Jeremy has is brilliant.

The early Sherlock Holmes novels are so interesting bc Watson takes an almost antagonistic view to Sherlocks deductive capabilities which results in a "deduce this, asshole" vibe
