#six of crows in regency era

Link
Dear Reader, as the rowboats set adrift, so do the fates of our characters. Amidst the rhythmic strokes of oars and laughter echoing against the water's edge, secrets surface, tensions linger, and the dance of emotions unfolds. Will the journey down the river lead to newfound understandings or unforeseen complications? The waters hold more than meets the eye, and the quiet moments might just be where the most significant revelations occur.
New chapter arrived! Have you ever wondered how The Crows would act in the world of Bridgerton? I did, So I am writing a fic about it. Please come and join me on this silly journey.

𝔑𝔢𝔴 𝔞𝔡𝔡𝔢𝔡 𝔪𝔲𝔰𝔢𝔰:
Lord Lester Morrigen: Lester Morrigen is the Lord of Crow's Nest and the head of House Morrigen in the stormlands. His heir is his younger brother, Ser Richard Morrigen. House Morrigen supports Renly Baratheon during the War of the Five Kings. After Renly's death, Lester allies with Stannis Baratheon. Lester's youngest brother, Ser Guyard Morrigen, is slain in the Battle of the Blackwater. Stannis tells Ser Davos Seaworth that Lester is among the stormlords who still remain loyal to him following his loss at the Blackwater. Lester goes to the North among his brother, leaving his sister as Regent of Crow's Nest before it's fall. Crow's Nest is usually the seat where prisoners are taken before send to the Wall, henche it's name. Lester takes the newly arriveed prisoners to the Wall on his journey to provide more men to Stannis. He would later sworn to Jon Snow. Canon. Song Era.
Lady Hermia Morrigen: Hermia is the younger sister of Lester and twin of Richard Morrigen. As both her brothers were going to the North, Hermia was left as Regent of the Crow's Nest. Her Regency however, was cut short as the stormlands are invaded with the landing of the Golden Company. Ser Tristan Rivers sets off to seize the seat of House Morrigen at Crow's Nest and Crow's Nest is taken, with Hermia remaining at the castle under the pretense that Tristan Rivers and the Company are her "guests". Her own political views support a female leader on the throne, be it Daenerys or Myrcella or Margaery, believing the throne has lacked rights for women and ladies for a while. OC. Song Era.
Lord Alesender Staedmon: Alesander Staedmon, called Pennylover, is the Lord of Broad Arch and the head of House Staedmon. Alesander is part of Stannis Baratheon's army. He is captured during the Battle of the Blackwater and later submits to King Joffrey I Baratheon. Staedmon is forced to remain at King's Landing and attends the Purple Wedding as well the coronation of Tommen Baratheon after the death of Joffrey. He is called Pennylover for many things, more so, for spending coin on pleasure houses on the most expensive women. House Staedmon is known for bringing high Courtesans from the Free Cities for former King Robert and has contacts with all the houses there. Canon. Song Era.
Lady Alys Karstark: Alesander is part of Stannis Baratheon's army. He is captured during the Battle of the Blackwater and later submits to King Joffrey I Baratheon. When she was six, Alys and her father, Lord Rickard, visited Winterfell. Despite Alys's young age, Rickard wanted her to charm Robb Stark in hopes of arranging a betrothal. She danced with Robb, whom she considered courteous, and with Jon Snow, who was sullen. In some verses, she will be married to Sigorn of Thenn, for the new House Thenn, while in others, she is the now Lady of Karkhold and Lady of House Karstark, offering her shield to Jon, for saving her from marrying her uncle. Canon. Song Era.
Lady Jeyne Farman: Jeyne Farman is a noblewoman of House Farman. She is the sister of Lord Sebaston Farman, the Lord of Fair Isle, and is the wife of Ser Gareth Clifton. A former childhood friend of Cersei Lannister and companion, she spend her early days at Casterly Rock, attending to Lady Joanna and taking her courtly lessons from her as well making companionship with Cersei. She accompanied Cersei and Melara Hetherspoon into the tent of Maggy the Frog during the tournament in honor of Viserys's birth in 276 AC, to hear their futures told. When Maggy opened her eyes, Jeyne fled into the night, never hearing her future. Jeyne has at least 12 children, all surviving to infancy and is now at King's Landing. Canon. Song Era.
Lord Sebaston Farman: Sebaston Farman is the Lord of Fair Isle and the head of House Farman. His sister, Jeyne, is married to Ser Gareth Clifton and was a former friend of Cersei while childhood. Sebaston used to squire for Tywin Lannister in his youth and spend time there as companion to Addam Marbrand and Jaime Lannister. The Red Wedding has caused Sebaston to doubt House Farman support to the Lannister, as the sacred act of guest rights was broken and the Farman are superticious regarding prophecies and rites. Canon. Song Era.
Kasporio: Kasporio, who styles himself Kasporio the Cunning, is a bravo who serves as the second-in-command of the Second Sons, a sellsword company. He wields a slender bravo's blade with a jeweled hilt, and wears a slashed pink doublet. Sometimes cruel, dismissive and swift but a generous lover. As the second siege of Meereen resumes, Kasporio goes with Brown Ben Plumm to visit Malazza, the Girl General. After they return he attends the meeting Ben has called. During the meeting he remarks that Malazza and Gorzhak zo Eraz, whom he calls "Pudding Face", are no better than one another. Canon. Song Era.
The Merling Queen: The Merling Queen is a famous courtesan in Braavos, her given name is Nereia but only her highest ranking lovers, who pay for her expenses know it. She is said to enjoy having relationships in water, and her hair makes her stand out among Braavos, she is the first Merling Queen of Braavos and she is said to be a woman from Westeros, stolen as a child and taken to Braavos, who started as a helper of another courtesan and rose to her own rank due her beauty. The beautiful Merling Queen is never seen without her Mermaids, young maidens in the blush of their first flowering, to hold her hair and veil. Like every Braavosi courtesan, she has her own barge, and servants to pole her through the canals of Braavos to her trysts. Canon. Song Era.
The Nightingale: The Nightingale is a famous courtesan in Braavos. Her given name is unknown. She is however, candidly named Gale by those who are around her and who sleep with her or pay her services. Originally from Tyrosh, she worked in a pleasure house in Tyrosh before founding true fame and status in Braavos. In this city, the Courtesans seem to hold certain type of power and Gale sends messages and information of some of her clients to sellsword companies. She is renowned for her beauty. Like every Braavosi courtesan, she has her own barge and servants to pole her to trysts. In Braavos, men are challenged to a duel by bravos if they do not say that the Nightingale is the most beautiful woman in the world when asked. Canon. Song Era.
Moonshadow: The Moonshadow is a famous courtesan in Braavos. Her given name is unknown. However, she gained the nickname of Shade, taken from her courtesan name. The beautiful Moonshadow wears only white and silver. Like every Braavosi courtesan, she has her own barge and servants to pole her to trysts. The Moonshadow gives Dareon a kiss for singing so wonderfully by the Moon Pool in Braavos. All is known of her is that her mother or father were from Dorne and she was paid to be given proper lodging and raised as a courtesan. She is hired by both men and women, in the case of women, to teach them how to pleasure their husband. Canon. Song Era.
Dārilaros Jaeson Veltheos of Tyrosh: Jaeson Veltheos is from one of the ancient houses of Tyrosh who survived the Doom of Valyria and stablished power in Tyrosh after the dragonriders were killed alongside dragons. Jaeson is a maester of ships and a sailor. He is the heir of his house, given the title of Darilaros, meaning Prince or Princess in High Valyrian. Jaeson shows support for Daenerys Targaryen and offers her more Tyrosh sellswords and ships, in exchange he wants one of her heirs or herself to wed a Veltheos, as previous Targaryen had taken Tyroshi wives or lovers. OC. Song Era.
Riña Dārilaros Ember Assharis of Myr: Her title comes from Valyrian and can be roughly translated to Lady Prince or Lady Princess. Ember is one of the first women on her House to inherit the title of heir, which is why many use it as Lady Prince. The Assharis family had come first from Asshai by the Shadow and worship the Red God, R'hallor and Ember herself praises Nissa Nissa, she was taught in a Red Temple and is known to have visions. House Assharis, unlike the other houses who have Valyrian features or some features, they have Asshai'i features, like Melisandre, Ember has ruby quartz like eyes. She is said to be warm to touch. OC. Song Era.

20 questions for fic writers
Took me forever to answer but here I am! I was tagged by @echo-bleu
1. How many works do you have on AO3?
36 on my main pseud, the rest being either translations or old stuff I archived from Wattpad.
2. What's your total AO3 word count?
89,808 words... How? I write mostly one shots, where do all these words come from?
3. What fandoms do you write for?
Currently the Silmarillion and LOTR, but I dabbed into the Hobbit fandom and Six of Crows when I first made my AO3account
4. What are your top five fics by kudos?
Elflings don't grow in a garden (usually) (Silm/LOTR)
Change of the Seasons (Hobbit)
Once upon aDecember in Ravka (Six of Crows)
An unlikely friendship (LOTR)
An ever-growing family (Silm/LOTR)
5. Do you respond to comments?
Yes, even if it’s only an emoji and it takes me ages.
6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
Dreams of Doom. It follows Niënor from the moment she arrives in Brethil to her death so, yeah, canon is not kind to her. But I think Náro isn’t far behind because I played with the contrast between a very soft start and an angsty ending to make it even more brutal.
7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
I dont' know... Most of my fics have either a very fluffy ending or a bittersweet one so it's hard to decide. But after pondering the question I'm going to say Ice Age(s) which is bittersweet but the end is definitely very fun and promising for the characters
8. Do you get hate on fics?
Luckily never.
9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?
Nope. I wrote a few scenes with implied/vague sexual content in Dreams of Doom but it’s not smut.
10. Do you write crossovers? What's the craziest one you've written?
I dont' write crossovers. Anymore. I wrote a few super whacky Percy Jackson-Harry Potter crossovers when I was 13 and had just discovered fanfiction.
But in my curred era of writing, the closes thing I have to a crossover is my forever WIP A Season in Alqualondë which is a Regency Au, Jane Austen style Silm fic.
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Not that I know
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
No, but I translated two (one is currently still being translated but I dont' have the brain to work on it often)
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
Never, and I don’t think I’ll do it. I’m terrible at working with someone else.
14. What's your all time favorite ship?
Éowyn x Faramir and Celebrían x Elrond
15. What's a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?
Tori daughter of Nori, a Hobbit fic where Nori finds an abandoned elfling during his wanderings and adopts her. I have lots of notes and even a few scenes written for this fic but I just don't have inspiration for it anymore.
16. What are your writing strengths?
Making people feel things? I also really like roccuring images and metaphors thoughout the story, to emphasis the characters' feelings or background. From several comments I know I am good at writing very strong contrast between the softest scene and the angstiest angst in a few sentences/paragraphs X) (see Náro or Dreams of Doom)
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
Verb tenses. English isn't my first language so I admit to go a bit freestyle regarding verbs and sometimes even sentence structure. I also find writing dialogs quite difficult and always fear they'll come out as stilted and artificial, hence why I make the characters speak as little as possible (Tolkien did that, I am only trying to emulate his style XD)
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?
As said above, dialogues aren't one of my stengths so I try not to incorporate another language unless absolutely necessary to the story.
19. First fandom you wrote for?
Percy Jackson, on Wattpad, nearly a decade ago.
20. Favourite fic you've written?
Ask me to choose my favourite child! But if I have to pick the one I am the most proud of, the one I spent most time and research and went really out of my comfort zone to write, it's clearly Dreams of Doom. I feel that, in terms of writing angst and character developement this fic is a turning point in my style.
And since I'm so late I don't tag anyone

Look below the cut for kbirb's @purimgifts 2024 letter (a little late, I'm sorry, it's been so hectic these past few days)
For reference, check out my "dear podficcer" letter from ITPE, which goes into more detail, as I know we want to keep these short and sweet! (It doesn't look short because bullet points but trust me... I tend to be wordier)
Hi! I'm kbirb on ao3 or Kaje to the wider internet/many of my IRL friends. I'm a nonbinary creator - typically podfics & graphics, though I do occasionally spill words onto a page and call it writing. I started podding in August 2022.
I think it's easiest to put it this way:
Triggers/Squicks/No-Thank-Yous:
Rape/non-con/dub con - with the caveat of rape recovery and abuse recovery being something I do enjoy in stories
Incest - I understand that to some portions of the fandom, clone shipping is called clonecest, but I do ship clones (with some caveats)
Underage/power dynamics - as a teacher, it's a major no from me
On-screen suicide/suicidal ideation - aka, if a character is recovering from suicidal ideation? That's fine. A character commits the act or seriously considers it? No thank you. It's easier to just say a blanket no to it
Cockroaches - idk I just hate them so much
Yes Please Times 1,000:
Slice of life
Modern AUs
Fluff in general
Hurt/comfort
Soulmate AUs (my faves)
Period piece AUs (especially regency era, oh my)
No Order 66
Crackfic
My favorite ships (applicable to this exchange, so focused on Jewish characters/women/Jewish women):
I tried to pick from all the fandoms I listed but I like a lot of gen fic in some of them. Especially ones like OFMD where there's not that many women in the first place, so I like fics that focus on women being power houses.
Star Wars [most of my SW ships are M/M so this is a little limited]: Ahsoka / any woman ever (well not ever but you get it), Kanin/Hera, Jyn/Cassian, Bail/Breha/Fox, Bly/Ayla
Ted Lasso: Keeley/Roy, Keeley/Roy/Jamie, Rebecca & Keeley, Rebecca & Ted
Batfam/DCU/Young Justice: Harley/Ivy, Kate Kane/any woman ever (again, not ever, but you get it), Jason/Kori/Roy, Artemis/Wally, Barbara/Dinah, Barbara/Kara, Barbara/Dick, Selina/Bruce, Selina/Harley/Ivy
The Locked Tomb: Gideon/Harrow, the fucked up polycule that created Gideon
The Adventure Zone: Lup/Lucretia, Lup/Lucretia/Barry, Aubrey/Dani
The Old Guard: Quynh/Andy
Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Willow/Tara, Buffy/Spike, Buffy & Willow, Buffy & Tara
Six of Crows: Inej/Kaz, Inej/Nina, Nina/Mattias
The Good Place: Eleanor/Chidi, Eleanor/Tahani
My favorite canonically Jewish characters from my listed fandoms (tragically there is only a few due to the fantasy world element of many of my fandoms):
Harley Quinn (DC)
Kate Kane (DC)
[some versions of] Bruce Wayne (DC)
[some versions of] Barry Allen (DC)
Agnus McDonald (TAZ)
Willow Rosenburg (BtVS)
Also Roy Kent, my favorite character in all of media, is played by a Jewish actor.
I really like fics that portray Bruce as Jewish, due to Kate (his cousin) being Jewish, and especially ones that branch into exploring Judaism for the entirety of the Batfam. For example, I recently did a podfic of one for ITPE that was different Hanukkah stories!
Further, I love love love any fics surrounding trans women or really any fics that bring a new focus to a character that we haven't seen before!
Trans Clones!! My favorite thing ever in the SW universe. I have several of my own nonbinary/trans woman clone OCs. If you wish to make any characters trans, the only clone/clone ship I do not ship is Cody/Rex because they feel like siblings to me. My favorite clone/clone ships that could be made trans are: Rex/Bacara, Wooley/Longshot, Waxer/Boil, Hevy/Fives/Echo, Fox/Fives/Echo. My favorite clone/jedi ships that can be made trans are: trans!Bly/Ayla, Cody/Obi-Wan, Fox/Quinlan, Hevy/Jon Antilles, Fox/Jon Antilles, Fox/Quinlan/Jon Antilles
If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to reach out to me in an anonymous ask... or reach out to my best friend, FLOWERPARRISH, on discord if you know zir/on here and ze won't tell me who you are. Ze knows me very very well & might even be better to ask if you don't want to spoil a podfic or anything!!

jesper fahey's guide to high society and falling in love
read it on AO3 at https://ift.tt/9fWLMxc by demigodbeautiies Lord Wylan Van Eck seemed to make an explosive first impression with Lord Jesper Hilli Fahey. Onlookers enjoyed the sight of their chemistry as they danced although, as this author understands, too much heat with the wrong sort of chemicals can cause quite the ugly reaction. /// This is not the summer Jesper Fahey plans to marry. As the son of a modest baron, he has plans for the season ahead - but they don't account for meeting Wylan Van Eck. One bad dance is all it takes to launch Jesper on the season of a lifetime; one full of long days, gossip rags and marriage-minded marquises. The best he can hope for is to avoid getting into trouble too deep to escape from, but anything might happen in a season like this one. /// Regency-era courtship AU Words: 6103, Chapters: 2/?, Language: English Fandoms: Six of Crows Series - Leigh Bardugo, Shadow and Bone (TV) Rating: Mature Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply Categories: M/M Characters: Jesper Fahey, Wylan Van Eck, Kaz Brekker, Colm Fahey, Nina Zenik, Inej Ghafa, Matthias Helvar, Jan Van Eck Relationships: Jesper Fahey/Wylan Van Eck, The Crows Ensemble & Jesper Fahey, Colm Fahey & Jesper Fahey, background Matthias Helvar/Nina Zenik Additional Tags: Alternate Universe - Historical, Regency Romance, Slow Burn, Eventual Smut, Enemies to Friends to Lovers, Oblivious Jesper Fahey, Mutual Pining, Light Angst, Courtship, Jesper Fahey's Gambling Addiction, Historical Inaccuracy, Inspired by Bridgerton (TV), No Knowledge of Bridgerton (TV) Required, Other Additional Tags to Be Added, Rating May Change read it on AO3 at https://ift.tt/9fWLMxc

2, 15, 19 :)
THANK YOU ICON! :D
2: top five books of all time? I am so indecisive oh no 😭
1. The Secret History
I am obsessed with people who are horrible and gay
2. Pride and Prejudice and Emma
I am a basic bitch, but Pride and Prejudice made me get back into reading 🥰 and Emma is basically a irl shipper from tumblr but in the regency era, and I love that for her.
3. The six of crows duology
They are my messed up little found family
4. The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo and Hani and Ishu’s Guide to Fake Dating
I love girlfriends 🥰
5. The Picture of Dorian Gray
Again, I love gay people who are also horrible (and Basil)
15: recommend and review a book:
OKAYOKAY, I’m still reading this one currently, but when I was a fetus (I just googled everything about it at like age 12 🦧) I was obsessed with ‘Journey to the West’ which is a 2,000 page classic 🕺 it sounds threatening but luckily the popular translation split it into four books!
Is it very long and tedious, but but it’s a very fun time, where else are you going to get a story where two of the main characters drink water and get pregnant from it? 😫 or have a chaotic Monkey god who bullies people for sport? It is truly iconic <3
19: most disliked popular books?
This isn’t very surprising, but it’s definitely Colleen Hoover. I can definitely see why people would like it, but all her characters kinda felt 2D to me (such as Lily Bloom being a Florist, Laylas sister marrying a guy named Chad Kyle just to showcase he’s a fuckboy etc etc), and her love interest are usually very 🤨🤨 I also dislike her writing style a lot 😭
again I can totally see why someone would love her books because they are just filled with drama, but that’s just not what I look for when I want to read romance.

TMATM Sunday Six
An exercise in blatant self-promotion where you post six (or so) sentences from the monster FitzSimmons Regency-Era-Lite fanfic you’ve been trying to finish for four bloody years but have at last found renewed vigour for and hammered out 11,676 words of in the last week. Unless I entirely revise the plot it will pick up from ch25′s heartbreaking cliff-hanger thus:
“What a to-do!” Victoria crowed across her apartment as Melinda entered. “Are you not excessively diverted, Montrose? Come and have some tea and tell me the latest from downstairs.”
“What could there possibly be to tell that you have not already ascertained by your own devious means?” Melinda muttered, lowering herself into the seat opposite her companion and accepting the freshly poured cup from her hands.
Victoria sighed. “Then simply allow me to repeat my intelligence and correct me where I might be in error?”
Melinda silently nodded her resigned acquiescence over the rim of her teacup.

Searching for a long-term RP partner!
About me
Hi, I’m Phoenix! I’m female, 18, a forensic psych student from the UK. Though I’m a major night owl, so don’t worry about timezones, I’ll usually find a way to make it work. I absolutely love writing, most of the time, and I’ve dropped out of the RPing scene for a while now, but I hope to come back.  I’m kind of a history buff – as well as majorly into the psychology of crime, it all sort of interests me, especially when those two obsessions overlap (1920s is my jam, for basically those reasons).
I love worldbuilding, so much, as well as coming up with random headcanons – I adore plotting OOC, and generally just chatting about our characters and what might come next for them, as well as what their pasts may be.
What I do
As mentioned before, worldbuilding and character crafting. I don’t expect constant lore or anything, but I’ll usually start bursting with ideas once I get the ball rolling.
Moodboards, I’ll probably make them. Lots of photoshops, too.
I usually write paragraphs, but I tend to mirror whatever my partner is doing, so it’s depending on the scene.
Plot and plan quite a bit OOC. Sometimes I just want to chat a little.
I’m mixed about smut, it really depends if I feel comfortable enough to write it or not in the moment. I am however, totally fine with (in relation to the characters) discussing it as well as kink, ect.
I can respond multiple times a day to posts, but it may drop to less once my studies resume. But I’ll typically always be available on discord.
I do ocxoc and (occasionally) canonxcanon.
I’ll write male or female characters, and M/M, F/F and F/M, I’m really not picky.
I mainly focus on OCs – I’ve rarely taken part in fandom RPs, it just hasn’t been my jam. But there are a few I’d consider.
What I’m looking for
At least over 16, preferably. Absolutely 18 if you’re seeking anything more NSFW/Darker.
Someone who’s okay with me doubling – and maybe doing so themselves. (I’m flexible on this)
Someone who’s alright with mature themes.
We’ll have to be able to talk OOC! I love just discussing things and brainstorming together.
Someone who’s okay with me suddenly sending them ideas, plotbunnies and worldbuilding out of nowhere because I suddenly got an idea. I will also send you songs, memes and aesthetics that make me think of our characters.
Be honest with me and let me know if you’re not interested, I’d like to work together on something here :]
Types of role-plays
I roleplay on discord, but I’m also open to google hangouts, docs or even email. I just prefer to talk OOC on discord (or the tumblr chat if needed).
I mainly do OCs, and there are quite a few plots that I’m itching to do, and several genres that I’m into.
Urban fantasy (street magic, everyday life with the supernatural twists)
Western (I love some wild wild west, a lot)
Victorian-based (either realistic or with a fantasy twist)
1920s-based mafia stories (again, realistic or with some fantasy)
Regency-era drama
Medieval-era drama
Post-Apocalypse stories (any kind of apocalypse)
Mermaids, selkies, sirens and pirates (and basically any other mythical pirate crew)
Retellings of Arthurian legends, Robin Hood, or other fairy tales
Superheroes
Greek or Norse gods, idk, anything involving them,
Super dark plots with strained or problematic relationships (recognised as such by both of us) can also be fun sometimes.
I’m open to any other suggestions, too! I’m flexible to get hyped up for most ideas.
There are a few fandoms I might be open to RPing as well.
Last Airbender (OCs in the universe only)
Marauders era (depending on the ships/relationships involved)
Six of Crows (I don’t even know if anyone even RPs this but ey)
Game of Thrones/Song of Ice and Fire (Preferably OCs)

Hamilton: What Drove King George III Mad?
https://ift.tt/3e6HpMC
It never fails to get a laugh. Whether live in the theater or at home on Disney+, the bristling energy of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Hamilton comes to a sudden halt the moment King George III makes his pompous entrance. Draped in a red, white, and gold mantle, and trapped beneath a sparkling crown, he looks like an oil painting that’s been shrunk on a postcard—and a perfect satire of British monarchy.
I didn’t have the pleasure of seeing Jonathan Groff perform King George III live, but I giggled all the same at every stammering outburst in the three variations of the song “You’ll Be Back,” a fawning ballad fit for 1970s pop radio, save for the moments where George laughs maniacally. It all makes for a merciless sendup of the monarch remembered for being crazy, even in the UK where on playgrounds he’s recalled as the “Mad King Who Lost America.” But why exactly was he “mad” and what did it do to his reign? While no one knows the exact cause for sure, there are theories—even as he ruled over a relatively successful period of time… if one ignores his distinctly American problem.
During his lifetime, George III presided over multiple moments of change and upheaval in the British Empire. In addition to being the first monarch to see colonies forsake his crown, he also came to power when the British Empire reached unparalleled heights. He was there to declare victory in the Seven Years’ War at the beginning of his rule—the conflict started before his time during the reign of grandfather George II—and essentially claim supremacy over France as Europe’s greatest colonial power, including in North America where the western most region of the global conflict is remembered as the French and Indian War. He also saw the unification of Ireland and Britain, thereby becoming the first monarch of the “United Kingdom.” And he was there when France fell into revolution, and then embraced the imperialism and world conquest of Napoleon Bonaparte. Technically, he was even king when Britain had its shining moment at Waterloo, defeating Napoleon for good in 1815.
But by that period in his life, George III was only nominally king. With his son reigning as Prince Regent—hence the period being remembered as the Regency era—George wandered the halls of Windsor Castle, not knowing at points that he was king. Despite being the then-longest ruling monarch in British history (and still the longest-ruling king), the end of his reign was marked by infamous incidents like the Christmas of 1819 where he ranted about “nonsense” for 58 straight hours, or being unable to comprehend in his blindness and near deafness that his beloved wife died in 1818. The final decline over the last 10 years of his life can be attributed to dementia, but there is some debate about what afflicted George in his youth… and when it actually began.
Arguably the first fit of “illness” occurred in 1765 during growing tension with the North American colonies. At the time, the king considered himself to be a friend to the colonists. After the French and Indian War, George’s Royal Proclamation of 1763—which forbade westward expansion—was for the colonists’ benefit, as the crown saw it, so as to prevent conflict with Indigenous Native American tribes. The Stamp Act levied on all printed paper in North American colonies was also at a smaller rate than the taxes on the West Indies colonies, or the taxes paid in general by British citizens in Europe.
Of course colonists didn’t see it that way. Not when there was taxation without representation in Parliament—and not when a required British stamp would therefore be a discrete form of approval over what kind of newspapers were printed and by which kind of colonists. Rejection of the Stamp Act came around the same time George is first recorded displaying a fit of mania.
After the episode passed, the king would replace George Grenville with Charles Watson-Wentworth as prime minister, and therefore soon repeal the Stamp Act. But not long afterward, Parliament had the bright idea to save its British East India Company monopoly—which had too much tea sitting in London warehouses—by forcing North American colonies to only buy East India tea and enforcing a new parliamentary tax on it. As George himself explained, “It was one tax to keep up the right to [tax colonists].” Along with a list of other grievances, it also inspired the Boston Tea Party in 1773.
The resulting tensions, including most infamously the Intolerable Acts, which attempted to punish all of Massachusetts for the crime of a few by shutting down the colony’s charter, Boston harbor, and letting the British government appoint all members to the upper house of the colony’s legislature, eventually gave way to war. But even after the firing started, George exacerbated matters when he refused to hear the Second Continental Congress’ Olive Branch petition, which in 1775 attempted to explain colonists’ grievances. The American messengers were given an official response that “his Majesty did not receive it on the throne, no answer would be given.” Rather George preferred declaring the colonists to be traitors in open rebellion.
He got to meet one of them face-to-face, too, after the war. As referenced in Hamilton, George met with John Adams exactly once when the volatile New England lightning rod—who’d spent years demanding the Continental Congress declare independence—became American Minister to London. George told Adams, “I was the last to consent to the separation.”

Hamilton: The Real History of the Burr-Hamilton Duel
By David Crow
However, during this entire period of his life, that includes two of King George’s three satirical interludes in Hamilton, the only major bout of well-known illness (or “madness”) was the one from 1765. Yet he began a steady decline after the American Revolution. In 1788, he’d retreated to Gloucestershire and an episode of illness began that quickly spiraled out of control for months—including incidents of George speaking non-stop for hours at a time, to the point where he’d begin foaming at the mouth and losing his voice. Rumors about “Mad King George” also began circulating from this era, with one spurious claim suggesting he shook hands with a tree, convinced it was the king of Prussia.
The most common explanation among modern scholars for these episodes, which continued to multiply until the point of mental incompetence in 1810, is that he suffered from hereditary porphyria, which is the name for a variety of similar genetic diseases that see symptoms periodically occur for a short period of time. The episodes can be brief, but the symptoms can be rapid, aggressive, and violent, affecting both the skin and nervous system and resulting in abdominal pain, chest pain, body aches, vomiting, constipation, and blisters. They can also trigger seizures and paralysis.
The primary reason historians drifted toward this diagnosis in the 20th century is that among other noted events by the king’s physicians—including how he needed to be restrained by pages sitting on his chest while he was held on the floor—is that he excreted blue urine. With the hue being one of the symptoms caused by porphyria, many have hypothesized that it is what ailed George. Playwright Alan Bennett even wrote a play about it titled The Madness of King George III. Ergo, George’s “madness” was a physical genetic ailment as opposed to a mental illness, one possibly caused by arsenic, as high levels of the poison were found in strands of George’s hair during a 2005 examination. It is possible he used it for cosmetic makeup.
However, other recent scientific research seems to argue that George instead suffered from bipolar disorder.  A research project based at St. George’s, University of London counters that George really suffered from a mental illness that went undiagnosed in the 18th and early 19th centuries. This is based on the study of thousands of George III’s handwritten letters. By analyzing his use of language, the researchers concluded his vocabulary was more sophisticated, and his sentences much longer, when he was in the fit of one such episode. According to Dr. Peter Garrard and Dr. Vassiliki Rentoumi, via BBC, it was common for George to write 400-word sentences with only eight verbs. Like his long and frantic conversations—to the point of foaming at the mouth—these traits may suggest a manic moment in what psychiatrists now diagnose as bipolar disorder.
The researchers argue that porphyria is also not the only explanation for George’s blue urine. His medical records show that he was given medicine based on gentian, a flower still used today and that features deep blue flower petals that may affect the digestive system.
Whatever the cause, the results were bitter, with George suffering from cataracts and rheumatism when he surrendered his crown in all but name to his son in 1811. At the time, George and contemporaries believed he was suffering grief over the death of his youngest daughter. The late princess’ nurse recalls seeing “scenes of distress and crying every day… [that] were melancholy beyond description.” But after the Regency Act of 1811, George’s health never improved and definite signs of dementia set in. He died on Jan. 29, 1820, six days after the death of his fourth son.
It was an ignominious end to a king who began his reign with a victory over France and an expansion of his empire. But thanks to Hamilton, that early confidence—and firm assurance that the American colonists would return to British arms, penitent and contrite—has been given a new kind of immortality.
