Draculaura Vampire Heart Review Part 1

I preordered her on Amazon when she first quickly blipped up after that now deleted Monster High Instagram post (such a sucky rollout Mattel, why must you bungle EVERY Skullector drop?!). She ended up being 90 bucks and she’s the best 90 bucks I have spent in awhile and my favorite Skullector doll EVER.

Her box is decorated with little hearts, hearts with vampire teeth, bat-winged hearts, the Vampire’s Heart, and filigree. The filigree on the box is really pretty and metallic and I love that it has a lot of bat wing motifs, but it’s not distracting.

I even like how they made the Monster High logo the same light pink that is present in her hair.

There are even little bats on the side of her box and a nice ombré effect.

I also love her box art. It looks like she is descending the grand stairs and bats are escaping on both sides of her. It’s just all so lovely. It’s not overt complicated but not too simple either….

The back of her box sadly doesn’t have any artwork on it, but instead a flipped close up (her heart is on the wrong side, haha) and the back of her doll.

The description on her box: “In another time…Draculaura is the Vampire Queen. As the Vampire’s Heart begins to glow, Draculaura can hear the stirring melody of a string quartet. ‘But how?’ She wonders, her dark eyes peering down into the ballroom as dancers swirl in a ghostly scene. Candles flicker with an ominous glow as the clock strikes midnight and Draculaura approaches the grand staircase. The crowd grows quiet as they watch the haunting beauty descend in a romantic and regal cage skirt ball gown. Her dark hair pulled back by and elaborate bat wing headpiece, the Vampire Heart glitters at the center and brings the crowd to a respectful bow. Draculaura has arrived and is ready to stake her claim as the new Vampire Queen.”

The description gives me similar vibes of the Ever After High SDCC releases, in which the dolls’ were experiencing their darkest timelines/endings. It’s like we had a dark ending to “Fright, Camera, Action” where Draculaura takes up Lord Stoker’s offer to be the next Vampire Queen and becomes his pawn.

She really came in perfect condition (with tissue paper and her own cardboard box). I was really worried on how she would come in after seeing/reading everyone’s horror stories of their’s getting smashed and mangled. I have never been so tempted to leave a doll in her box before….

…..anyways out of the box she comes!! The rest is under the cut.

Here is here authentication card. You know what would be a great addition to what was under here too? A diary!! I need my lore dang it!! Draculaura’s original collector doll’s diary is one of the best ones I had read in G1. It was chock full of new information on Draculaura.

She has a clear (very lightweight) saddle stand that works as well as any other Monster High saddle stand…so not the best…but I like how it is clear so it doesn’t show under her dress.

Luckily she can mostly balance on her own.

I wanted to compare her box to the original 50 dollar Amazon Exclusive: collector Draculaura from 2015.

It’s background is a lot simpler, but I love that they shaped it like a coffin.

I love the rock-marble details, along with the “handles.”

And her description (that was elaborated more in her included diary….): “She is a hopeless romantic with the soul of a poet. A gentle hearted friend who is kind and loyal to a fault. Her favorite accent color is pink and she loves the warmth and light of a sunny day. You almost wouldn’t know that she’s a vampire except that she is. Draculaura; student, Fear Squad member, friend of werewolves, fan of days at the beach, daughter of Dracula himself, and in all the ways heir to his legacy save for one. She is a riddle, wrapped in sweetness, inside an infectious laugh. This is Draculaura like you have never seen her before, resplendent in a satin and lace embodied dress. Every detail painstakingly crafted to represent the height of Victorian vampire fashion in the late 19th Century. Take a stroll with her through the foggy streets of Old Londoom and rediscover an old friend or make a new one.”

I don't remember if I posted these or not, but I found some very early character concepts from 2011. The most interesting thing here is that Brogan briefly had a skullet! I guess I decided that he and Itchy looked too similar, because in the end I gave him more hair.

Okay so here I was playing around with a different hair style. Specifically for post time skip. I ultimately scrapped it and decided to use the hair style I normally draw her with as her post field agent haircut. During her tenure as a field agent she had the long hair that is pinned back. So that’s how you can tell the difference between profession.

Fun fact: she actually created the foundation for the teleportation technology. It just had a hard limit on range for the longest time. But eventually her successors improved on it and made it what we see the GDA employ today that can teleport even to the moon.

Here are STUPID OLD PEOPLE getting caught being chummy. Cecil is not pleased at whoever found him. Please leave him alone he’s got a lot going on. Especially post time skip when this picture would be based on his hairline. (Pro-tip: Cecil’s hairline will also give you a point of reference for time period. Blonde + slightly receded is during both of their field agent days. Gray + moderately receded is during his later field agent days and his time as director. The fucking skullet is in the present. And of course, no scar is the earliest).

Here’s Cecil solo with some vaguely-beretta-m9-shaped pistols as a palette cleanser. Thank God. This pose I stole from some panel of Abe Sapien I found on Google and thought, “that looks cool.” I think I’m gonna do some John Wick poses next because I just rewatched that movie and kept imagining Cecil beating the shit out of people the whole time instead of Keanu Reeves. I think it was the suit tbh.

Anyway if you read that whole thing you’re a real one I guess. Thank you for tolerating my stupid bullshit. My brain always latches on to the worst fictional characters. And this one in particular had no foil character so naturally I had to fill it in myself.

Monster High: Twyla Boogeyman's Profile

For some reason, Twyla wasn't given an official profile like the earlier monsters from generation one. When a profile was created, several details were missing. This included her last name, pet's picture and skullet. Due to this, everything has been gathered into one post.

Got a couple dolls on vacation ^-^ I plan to do a proper haul post when I get home but for now have some rambling

As much as I wish they were still green, I do love this doll alot. This is my favorite rendition of frankies prosthetic leg, just metallic looking with no doodles on it. The three gears near the bottom are always my favorite detail. The hair is nice and soft, and the clothes are fun and interesting.

It also seems to have the issue all g3 frankies do in that the head looks like it's was too far down the neck peg. I love the hat, but I have seen other people point out the combo of that style hat with lightning bolts is. Suspicious. And I have to agree. I know it obviously wasn't what they were going for but I feel like they could have done less lighting around the head, like have a skullet on the hat or something and avoid any risk of them looking like. You know.

I am thinking of repainting the thing on the hat anyways as I find it a little ugly tbh, and I'll probably change the earrings as well. On the topic of changing their clothes I plan to nail polish remove the lightning print on the see through knee high boots. Also her hands nearly broke apart when I tried to remove them which is concerning, and they were really difficult to remove from the box due to those stupid plastic tabs in the head. Flimsy hands notwithstanding the good doll is good, solid 7/10

As a certified g1 nostalgia shill (got my first doll at age 8, 9 years ago) I'm starting to warm up to these new designs a little. I am still peeved about the skin color changes tho. The new variety in bodies is nice, the clothes are fun, plus a new generation of kids get to grow up with monster high dolls which is always a good thing. Im still never getting over the ungreenification though they literally did not need to do that. No good reason whatsoever.

I also got Draculaura and a random lol omg doll that really spoke to me, but I will wait till I get home to open them up. The mystery bag of doll accessories I ordered arrived recently so I will post that soon as well.

Ah, I just did MagPickles!  I’ll do Nickles for you now.

What made you ship it?

A lot of things! Their friendship is really dynamic, they play off of each other a lot for personal growth.  I think their personalities line up in a way that meshes well.  I like how much of canon is about them developing emotional intimacy towards each other.

What are your favorite things about the ship?

That shit where Nathan was a teen Snakes n Barrels fan and completely does not tell Pickles about it as the friendship develops because he’s scared of being weird or whatever?  That’s so cute and lovely.  I also like the idea that Pickles has a terrible relationship with his own parents, and so he gets the opportunity to hang out with Nathan and his mom and do all the shit Nathan considers to be lame and whatever that he’s wanted to but couldn’t. Let our boy get eggnog drunk with Rose Explosion, you know?  Let him just be warm and happy and feel like he just gets to be a part of a unit when he’s over there.

I did an RP once where Pickles goes with Nathan to Florida while Nathan is doing physical therapy after getting stabbed and the plot was basically... this shit, and it was incredibly lovely.

Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship?

Uhh, the height difference is not the end all be all, and usually I really don’t like massive ones in couples.  Pickles needs to just shave his fucking terrible skullet from hell, I would lick his bald dome any day I’m begging.  Oh! A lot of the NSFW fan works of them have Nathan as a power top, which I... disagree with... but I really don’t consume much NSFW so who knows really, I could have a false impression.  I also find Nicklegail compelling, where the’re just in a throuple post canon, even though I think both Nathan and Pickles would need to do a lot of emotional growing to be remotely worthy of my Best Girl, as it were.  As it is she’s.... too good for them imo lol

Sci-Fi Sound Design for Final Film RAD004

Traditionally a lot of otherworldly sci-fi is done through the editing of readily available sounds. “ Even though you may re-pitch and process these recordings to soundless recognisable or more suitable for their purpose, they will hold the essence of something the listener perceives as real. ” Through my experiments I’ve come to agree with this as I could take such things as

a washing machine on a cycle, and pitch it down for an eerie computerised humming ambience. 

White noise or generated tones have so much use, like a highly manipulable instrument for scoring, ambience that can be played at any cent level to change its tone. 

Space ships are generally large and powerful, therefore equal sounds such as the rumble of a ferry would be a good source. “The typical rumble we’re referring to would be from a spaceship that’s usually the size of a city; in general, these will also be slow-moving. A real-world equivalent would be a large ferry. Taking a cue from this comparison, you can imagine it will have a low, consistent tone, so you’re looking for something along these lines, with a decent duration to avoid looping and editing, but slight variation so it doesn’t sound too static. “

Considering the space craft:

Due to its dumbbell design, I’d imagine the ship to make very rattly metallic noises as the 3 piece layout would be fairly fragile. Furthermore I believe that it would have a light sounding engine, perhaps even two engine sounds at once, due to the two compartments. Sounds would be pitched up (I.E. washing machine) for the smaller craft, however I think rattling inconsistencies may be more realistic. Perhaps I could put some nuts and bolts in the drum when recording.

Voice sampling is a great way to produce alien sounding noise. ‘Avox throat’ is a decent software for such a thing. Can also be synthesised by sounds less natural. “ Similar tones to the Tie Fighter can be created from scratch with some FM synthesis coupled with pitch-bending to get a rise-and-fall whining sound ” 

Down or up pitching something that sounds similar to your source is an option for it seeming bigger or smaller. 

“ For movement on metallic surfaces or ruins, add recordings of a chain dropping on a hard surface, or fill a can with loose metallic objects and walk with them. Layering these kinds of sounds with impact noises can be very convincing. “

Mechanical movement noises “ Take the opening and closing of a DVD player’s tray, for instance. It has a consistent motor noise that gives a good thud at the end of its travel when it closes. Other sources include an electric toothbrush, beard shaver or toy car.” This is a good example to encourage me to think of sounds and their easily accessible equivalencies. Other sources that could be beneficial for a sci-fi film would by a soundscape of different devices disk trays opening / closing, the roar of computers fans when they’re strained or even a pond pump. These would all be applicable for sort of motorised sound to convey the movement and power of the space craft. 

Sounds to record and/or edit:

Washing machine (pitched down , flanged)

Computer fans (pitched down, flanged, stuttered)

Pond pump 

Train sounds (from afar and up close)

Synthwave in sci-fi:

Iron Skullet, 2018, What is synthwave?, Ironskullet, accessed 15/10/19, <https://ironskullet.com/2018/03/01/what-is-synthwave-2018-edition/>

Electronic music based on the music of the 1980′s, which tends to have some coinciding aestheticism. This is relevant to sci-fi, due to both genres of media being chronologically popular, which has given them given them a resemblance to one another. Furthermore the electronic synthesised style of music has many connotations of sci-fi, such as computers and technology. Genre and styling is used in an array of ‘Marvel’ movies. “ few songs from the genre could pass for vintage creations, and very little music from the past sounds precisely like synthwave. Instead, it is a retrofuturistic evolution of elements from the past, amalgamated and taken into an alternative timeline with suitably distinct musical and visual aspects.” This demonstrates how not just the musical style is relevant, but a visual synthwave style is applicable to the film, however the main focus is on the fusion of elements form the past (I.E. Electonic keyboard, guitars, violins and wind instruments.) and modernising it. In order to work in a film setting I must remember to create the score with very long drawn out notes at a low BPM so that it does not distract form the image. The goal is to barley notice it’s there and to gently set a mood. 

Depending on the tone of the script or what the director wished to do with it then investigating the sub-genres would be required. I believe that we will end up with a more lighthearted film due to the team we have, therefore I will preemptively study ‘retro electro’ and ‘dream wave’ since they would be the most applicable. I find that the former genre would be best suited for heightened scenes of drama whereas the latter would be better for scenes that explore the human condition, or that focus on beauty or emotion. 

‘Metroid’ as a sources of dreamwave inspiration -  Usually has an inspiration from videogame music, trying to be relaxing while still being euphoric. 

Retro Electro considers: Electronic drums, gated reverb and analogue synthesised bass and lead. Music reminiscent of the 80′s. 

Equipment considerations

AKG C400B - very good for dialogue in post with cardioid and hypercardioid settings.

Sennheiser sk100 radio mics. A sub microphone just in case boom is insufficient.

Sennheiser mkh70 for location sound and dialogue when applicable.

Sony c74 supercardioid shotgun mic for low noise recording. Recommended for collecting sound effects.
