Truly the darkest timeline as a fan of SM artists...

Hybe getting involved does not feel good at all but selling the company to Kakao feels really, REALLY bad. They are a tech company and there's no predicting what they might do. Exclusive distribution rights to a company that pulled all their Kpop songs from Spotify feels dangerous. I wouldn't be surprised if Hybe's involvement is out of self preservation as well. Kakao is so much bigger than any of these entertainment companies, and if they were to succeed with SM the other 3 could very well be the next targets.

It's hard to imagine SM retaining their identity without their most prominent producers and songwriters, both YHJ left and YYJ said he won't work without SM.

tbh i'm at the point where them going to hybe IS the (slightly) lesser of two evils, but it's all bad every way you look. them going to kakao is fr a monopolistic endgame that spells extremely badly for artists bc it is a giant tech conglomerate that has fingers in everything and can very easily disrupt the industry, so yea i'm also inclined to agree that hybe stepping in IS out of self preservation, bc if kakao acquires sm then what's stopping them from acquiring every other big four company. it's still not gonna stop me from being worried about the artistic quality though, since we've all seen what hybe does

Speaking of the guy who built the sm sound can't remember his name but you know. From what I've seen a lot of korean sm stans are actually happy he's leaving because they think he ruined the music and it's gotten too weird and too "out there" and that sm should go back to making more generic music which even further proves that anything unique or non conventional gets met with hate and that's also why bts changed their music to the blandest fucking H&M background music as soon as they started getting big. And why we need that man to stay in sm!!

also sm is very good at solo careers, like it is so so so incredibly rare for most group members to do even mildly well when they go solo but sm is so good at it. like shinee? literally every single member has an extremely successful solo career. and like you could argue that hybe (bts) or yg (bp) have that too but genuinely 90% of the views and streams on those are from fans that would stream even if they screamed into the mic for an hour, but sm has even people who arent into kpop tuning in. like taemin? some people genuinely didnt know he was in shinee because they knew all his solo songs but never heard of shinee itself. and taeyon from snsd with invu? joy with red velvet with annyeong that literally somehow went viral on tiktok with ppl who dont even know kpop?? AND WHEN EVERY COSPLAYER KNEW "SHOW ME" BY KEY FROM HOW FAMOUS IT GOT!!! for all their faults you can never criticise sm when it comes to music itself

and that's saying nothing about how i think baekhyun is the best selling soloist of all time currently?? obvs and also boa, but she's always been a soloist. the fact that less than a decade ago they decided they were gonna try to launch a solo career from a group and it popped off so hard that they've been able to do it with every other group since is ASTOUNDING
