Short Biography of Steve Jobs
Steven Paul Jobs was born on February 24, 1955 in San Francisco, California. His unwed biological parents, Joanne Schieble and Abdulfattah Jandali, put him up for adoption. Steve was adopted by Paul and Clara Jobs, a lower-middle-class couple, who moved to the suburban city of Mountain View a couple of years later.

The Santa Clara county, south of the Bay Area, became known as Silicon Valley in the early 1950s after the sprouting of myriads of semi-conductor companies in the area. As a result, young Steve Jobs grew up in a neighborhood filled with engineers working on electronics and other gizmos in their garages on weekends. This shaped his interest in the field as he grew up. At age 13, he met one the most important persons in his life: 18-year-old Stephen Wozniak, an electronics whiz-kid —and an incorrigible prankster, much like Steve himself.
Five years later, when Steve Jobs reached college age, he told his parents he wanted to enroll in Reed College — an expensive liberal arts college up in Oregon. Even though the tuition fees were astronomical for the poor couple, they had promised their son's biological parents he would get a college education, so they relented. Steve spent only one semester at Reed, then dropped out, as he was more interested in eastern philosophy, fruitarian diets, and LSD than in the classes he took. He moved to a hippie commune in Oregon where his main activity was cultivating apples.
A few months later, Steve returned to California to look for a job. He was hired at the young video game maker Atari, and used his wages to make a trip to India with one of his college friends, Dan Kottke, in order to 'seek enlightenment'. He came back a little disillusioned and started to take more interest in his friend Woz's new activities.
Woz, whose interest in electronics had grown stronger, was regularly attending meetings of a group of early computer hobbyists called the Homebrew Computer Club. They were the real pioneers of personal computing, a collection of radio jammers, computer professionals and enlightened amateurs who gathered to show off their latest prowess in building their own personal computer or writing software. The club started to gain popularity after the Altair 8800 personal computer kit came out in 1975.
The knowledge that Woz gathered at the Homebrew meetings, as well as his exceptional talent, allowed him to build his own computer board — simply because he wanted a personal computer for himself. Steve Jobs took interest, and he quickly understood that his friend's brilliant invention could be sold to software hobbyists, who wanted to write software without the hassle of assembling a computer kit. Jobs convinced Wozniak to start a company for that purpose: Apple Computer was born on April 1, 1976.
Although Markkula was a bit too optimistic (it actually took 7 years for Apple to make it), he was right that the company would become an overnight success. Steve Jobs was a big believer in the Lisa computer initially. It was he who came up with the name. Indeed, in 1978, his ex-girlfriend from high school Chrisann Brennan gave birth to a little girl, who she named Lisa. Steve denied paternity, although it was obvious to everyone who knew him that he was the father, given the on-and-off relationship he still had with Chrisann at the time. Many dreamers from around the world hope to  build their startups or successful tech careers in Silicon Valley. Fortunately many international hackathons and startup conferences would be held in these months, which helped him create a credible story to get close to his target. At first he thought of notifying Christian that he had arrived in the country, but soon  he dropped this idea. It would be better to contact him when he found any substantial evidence.
After the tiring long-haul flight he really just hoped to get some rest at the hotel. He took d Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) to Millbrae, so that he could get on board a Caltrain to Palo Alto. There is a higher chance to get spotted in a hackathon by senior management of large tech corporations, which means they might be able to stay in the US to develop their careers. Even though they may not have any progress in Vid’s hackathon, they would still join hackathons in downtown San Francisco, San Jose and Santa Clara. To keep his motives secret, he only mentioned to them that he just wished to learn more about Silicon Valley’s current development and he was planning to move to California to start a business. Those students just thought he might be a rich investor based on his Asian appearance, so they all showed interest in his potential startup tale.
Students are really gullible, he thought. Certainly he would not create a startup in California. His main objectives are to gather intelligence about the previous bombing in Jakarta and Helen’s location from Andrew and investigate his possible involvement  in the terrorist attack, but this tech tycoon must be a real hard nut to crack.
About an hour later, they arrived at a five-star luxury hotel. As Vid’s offices could not accommodate hundreds of participants like the other tech giants did, it rented a large hotel instead, and it generously arranged accommodation for most participants who struggled with it, but the staff of the hotel and Vid had to be busy with the logistics involved.
Kyle did not mingle with the three students any longer. After signing up at the registration counter, he entered the restaurant to enjoy a complimentary buffet breakfast. At the same time, he used his MacBook and iPad to organize the information he had gathered regarding the target. Outsiders may only get the impression that he was just preparing for the hackathon, as other competitors were preoccupied with checking their devices as well.
Andrew Hector and a few directors’ unexpectedly arrived at the same restaurant. It caused an uproar among the participants, so he had to shut down his devices to avoid drawing anyone’s attention to him. Similar to most tech tycoons in Silicon Valley, Andrew seemed casual, friendly and easygoing. Having had a clear undercut styled haircut, he just wore a long-sleeved V-neck white tee, jeans and a pair of Nike sneakers. The directors’ dress style was mainly smart casual. They parted with Andrew and went to have their own breakfast first, while Andrew mingled with the participants with a smiley face under the protection of two bodyguards and his assistant. Some participants requested taking selfies with him and he welcomed it.
This time he would not only attract the eyeballs of his fans and the press. The tech world would soon go abuzz about his company’s new product, the sharp black V10 Spectacles he was currently wearing. They were not only waterproof, but capable of shooting longer videos and livestreaming what the wearer saw onto VidChat. The large screens at the scene were showing a high-resolution footage of what he was seeing, and it was at the same time being livestreamed to his own fans on his official account.  
He may be a secretive introvert, but it did not mean he did not know how to pitch and sell his product. Some reporters anticipating  the news immediately captured the scene. He was the target of their cameras’ limelights. He did answer some of their questions, but an assistant intervened and asked them to interview him instead after the opening of the hackathon. Then they were directed to the press seats.
Just right after the reporters left him, he noticed Kyle. ‘I hope you like my new Spectacles. A friend of mine has just come to visit me. See you again at the opening,’ he casually said goodbye to his fans and logged out. He then took away his Spectacles and made sure both his smartphone and the spectacles were offline. He came to sit opposite Kyle at his table without regard of the other people turning their eyes to them. ‘Kyle, can’t believe you’re here. How’s it going?’ he just greeted him warmly, as though he saw him as a very good friend. 
Lucky me. I was quick enough. Otherwise all people on the spot know I’m here to dig up his dirt. He secretly sighed with relief. As his target had just come into his way, he seized this valuable chance to get into contact with him. ‘I’m doing ok. I’ve just quit my job, and the development in my hometown’s tech scene is too slow, so I am seeking opportunities overseas. That’s why I’m here.’
‘That sounds great. It’s better to leave the sad place for a while, isn’t it?’ Andrew’s dark blue eyes are as tranquil as the quiet ocean, and they seem to wield the power to soothe people’s worries. His voice was quite captivating. ‘As this is your first time to come to Silicon Valley, I should invite you to my home for a meal.’
‘I’m afraid this might disturb you. Would it be better to meet at a restaurant near your office?’
‘Sorry to tell you that it might not be a good idea. We’ve moved most of our offices to Venice. That’s where Zap’s headquarters is. It’s good to be its neighbour and enjoy its prettier seaview.’ The cutthroat competition between VidChat and Zapchat was too well-known in the  global tech scene. They struggled hard to persuade companies to place social ads and entertainment content on their platforms. Competing head-to-head for speed in updates on camera functions, their apps’ interface, camera filters, AR effects to attract users and production of the latest VR goggles and other compatible hardware is just their usual business. Not long after Zap Inc.’s IPO, Vid rose as if out of nowhere. The two companies’ founders were below thirty, and they shared bitter rivalry. When Andrew finally moved to Venice, sparks of enmity would surely erupt.  ‘Palo Alto’s office is now just the place to organize hackathons here. I ‘ll not work there. After the opening I’ll first return to Venice.’
Venice…..This means LA? If his Palo Alto office is only a place for running their hackathons, then why was it the origin of the virus? Is he trying me to bar me from investigating it there?
Kyle was a bit disappointed with this answer, but as the target was right in front of him, he did not wish to give up. And it seemed God listened to him.  ‘But well, I’ll still be here when the hackathon ends. That means we’ll have more time to meet.’ Andrew seemed quite enthusiastic about more contact with Kyle. ‘How about coming over to my house for lunch? Is 12pm on November 30 ok with you? I ‘ll still have to stay in Palo Alto to pack my stuff before moving to Venice, so it’s still ok for me to have a lunch with you and take you around Palo Alto.’
‘It’s very nice of you. Thank you.’  Kyle decided to wait and observe as Andrew appeared to welcome his visit. If he had any intelligence and was even a member of Olympus, he may give away some leads.
‘Andrew, sorry to interrupt.  The time for the opening speech will come soon. You still haven’t had anything, ’ Andrew’s assistant had been waiting for them for some time and he finally intervened.
‘Sorry, I have to go. I hope you’ll enjoy the hackathon.’ Before leaving both men shared their contact details  and VidChat’s accounts.
Kyle had a hard time as the hackathon progressed, as it requires participants to innovate within a very short time frame. The organizer only revealed the hackathon’s theme during the opening speech: new application of VR/AR. Kyle was paired with three steadfast Indian postgraduates who apparently knew nothing about fatigue. And they decided to create an AR exchange platform based on VidChat’s interface. This really just tested Kyle’s limited coding and hardware engineering knowledge and his ability to stay awake. They just worked on this project non-stop. When the hackathon finally ended, they celebrated and bade farewell to each other at a nearby pub. Even though he disliked alcohol, he still sipped two glasses of tequila before returning to his suite.
He had a shower and got dressed after a sound sleep. After having another big breakfast, he took a cab to Andrew’s home on Palo Alto Hills.
This meeting won’t be that simple. He shouldn’t have been so passionate about inviting a mere acquaintance to his home.

A.P. Giannini: Banking, (Re)building, and the Crafting of California
When the sun sank over San Francisco on April 18th 1906 most people were wondering if light would ever return to their lives. At 5:12 a.m. that morning residents felt a shock shortly before their world came crumbling down. The 1906 San Francisco Earthquake crushed the city with a magnitude of 7.9 that flattened buildings, uprooted roads, and caused uncontrollable fires that raged freely due to broken water mains leaving the fire department with few options to retaliate.
 The city would rebuild, but to do so people needed funding. Their first steps to a new life were taken toward the neighborhood of North Beach.
 Amadeo Pietro “A.P” Giannini was born on May 6th 1870 in San Jose, California. His father Luigi was an Italian immigrant, lured to the states by the California Gold Rush in 1849 before returning to his home country in order to marry Virginia Demartini. The pair eventually returned to California and in 1872 Luigi bought a farm to grow fruits and vegetables launching his career in produce.
The growing and selling of produce was a family business for Luigi, Virginia, and their two children but they were hit by an unexpected blow when Luigi was shot and killed by one of his employees over a wages dispute. The business continued under the helm of Virginia and her children but in 1880 Virginia married Lorenzo Scatena officially rebranding their family business as L. Scatena & Co.
 Amadeo Giannini grew to be successful in the family business and beyond working as a produce broker, commission merchant, and produce dealer for farms in the Santa Clara Valley region. At the age of thirty-one he left the produce industry and became director of the Columbus Savings & Loan, a business his late father-in-law owned an interest in. Banking was a new career for Giannini but he quickly saw underutilized opportunities to serve the booming immigrant population of San Francisco. Banks at the time only catered to big businesses and the wealthy, turning a blind eye to those who did not have a bank and depended on themselves to protect their savings. The other bank directors did not agree with Giannini’s ideas to reach out to the immigrant population and in frustration Giannini left the company. If this bank would not help those who needed it most, he would do it himself.

In the summer of 1904 Giannini and five other Italian businessmen opened the Bank of Italy inside a single-room converted saloon, even hiring a former bartender as a teller. From the beginning Giannini’s practices were drastically unorthodox. Unlike other banks who shunned reaching out to find new clients Giannini did everything possible to reach out to the people who had never had a bank or who had been turned down due to big bank egos. He walked door-to-door and approached people in the street offering savings accounts, loans as low as $25, mortgages, credit, and an opportunity to earn interest on savings. He wanted his bank to be for the hardworking “little fellow”, stating that he judged people not by their wealth, but by their character. Along the way he interacted deeply with the people, explaining in full how banking works, the benefits of his bank, and encouraging people that banking with gold and silver was far safer than keeping their hard-earned money unprotected in their own homes. Among his first clients were immigrants, the poor, farmers, small businesses, women, and minorities. Within the first year deposits reached what would equate to nearly ninety million dollars today.
When the earthquake hit San Francisco on that early April morning Giannini knew his single-room bank was holding the financial lives of too many people to risk any damage. Using a garbage cart from Scatena & Co. he loaded up what would amount to just under two million dollars today, covered it in orange crates, and navigated the streets that were crumbling into chaos and quickly falling prey to not only the natural disaster but also to looters and thieves. Giannini made it back to his home outside the city and until the danger dissipated he hid the entire financial foundation of San Francisco inside his fireplace.
The level of destruction left behind by the earthquake was unimaginable. The city was flattened, torn apart at the seams, and scorched leaving people wondering how they would ever return to anything resembling normal. People lost everything but in order to take a step in any direction they would need their money. The problem was that they could not get to it. The large metal bank vaults were turned into mini infernos from the fires and even though the money inside may have made it through intact, they could not be safely opened without risking the contents inside. The cooling process could take weeks. As a result, almost every large bank in San Francisco was forced to shut down with their futures in limbo. The only banker that has access to his client’s funds was Giannini. Within days after the earthquake Giannini was in the North Beach neighborhood with a plank of wood sitting across two barrels taking deposits and giving out rebuilding loans signed for with a handshake. The Bank of Italy, the bank for the “little fellow”, was open for business.

The San Francisco Earthquake was not the only upheaval that Giannini was able to navigate through due to his unusual business practices, instinct, and absolute faith in the common man. When the financial crisis of the Panic of 1907 hit the country the Bank of Italy patrons were protected. Months before the Panic Giannini had been hearing about possible issues at the New York Stock Exchange and he began campaigning for people to make deposits while working toward increase his gold reserves. When the stock exchange fell nearly 50% in October 1907 the ripple effect hit banks across the country hard but Giannini’s foresight and planning meant that all the assets in his bank were safe. While other banks around the country were forced to place limits on banking or close down, his clients were safe and were able to continue on as usual.
Giannini founded his bank to give opportunities to people and in 1909 the pool of potential clients became infinitely deep when California passed laws allowing the establishment of bank branches. The first branch of the Bank of Italy opened in San Jose, California in October 1909 and within a decade it became the first statewide branch banking system in the United States with twenty-four branches possessing more than ninety-three million dollars in assets. After several years of acquiring and consolidating, in 1928 Giannini merged his bank with Bank of America and other bank branches to create what would become the largest banking institution in the country. On November 3, 1930 the Bank of Italy was officially renamed Bank of America National Trust and Savings Association, today known as simply Bank of America.
Giannini had success and wealth that few people could imagine but for the produce manager turned banking mogul this just meant he could help on a grander scale than ever before. With two barrels and a wooden plank he helped rebuild San Francisco and his further efforts continued to mold the state of California. In 1923 the place now considered the home of Hollywood was still new to the entertainment industry with less than two decades of filmmaking under its belt. It was in this year that Giannini’s banks created a motion picture loan division to help encourage the new industry’s growth. The loans given out by his banks did more that encourage, it helped to ignite the film industry in California with backing going toward hundreds of films. Funding also went to Charlie Chaplin, Douglass Fairbanks, Mary Pickford, and D.W. Griffith in order to solidify the United Artists Corporation which is still operating today. In 1937 Bank of America was approached for another loan, this one for 1.7 million in order to finish production on a groundbreaking film. The film was Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, the first ever full-length animated feature. Armed with the funding needed to complete the endeavor, Walt Disney was able to finish Snow White and present it to the world on February 4th 1938. Bank of America went on to finance the production of Bambi, Cinderella, Dumbo, Fantasia, Peter Pan, and Pinocchio. Decades later Bank of America also financed the construction of Disneyland and Disney World.

 Another one of A.P. Giannini’s contributions to California was one that literally brought two parts of the state together. In the 1920s the only way to get from Marin County to San Francisco was to take a ferry across the San Francisco Bay. An engineer named Joseph Strauss saw the imminent problems with only relying on a waterway connection and he developed a plan for a suspension bridge that would stretch across the bay linking Marin and San Francisco. Unfortunately, the Wall Street Crash of 1929 was a very recent memory and many people did not have faith that the extravagant (and expensive) plan would work. Strauss faced multiple lawsuits from skeptics and special interest groups that drained his finances. Strauss approached Giannini, telling him that he was the last hope for the construction of the bridge. Giannini had one question for Strauss, how long would this bridge stand? Strauss’s answer was “Forever!” and it was enough of an answer for Giannini to agree to fund the construction of what he considered to be a crucial addition to the state of California. Construction on the Golden Gate Bridge began in January 1933 and it was completed and opened on May 27th, 1937.

The list of causes funded and founded by A.P. Giannini is extensive and includes the foundation of the Giannini Foundation of Agricultural Economics at the University of California, rebuilding Fiat factories lost in Italy during WWII, providing capital to William Hewlett and David Packard to help form Hewlett-Packard, and on his 75th birthday he created and endowed the A. P. Giannini Foundation with a personal gift of nearly $500,000 to support research into the discovery and treatment of human diseases. If he chose to, he could have been a billionaire but that was a title that he avoided at all costs, working without pay and donating yearly bonuses to causes he believed in. Giannini had a distaste for extreme wealth and believed it would only lead to him becoming out of touch and unable to help people. “Money itch is a bad thing,” he once commented, “I never had that trouble.”
When A.P. Giannini died on June 3rd 1949 his estate was worth $500,000, a fraction of what it could have been, and definitely more than he wanted it to be.
A.P. Giannini grew into a force of change in not only his home state, but across the world. He rebuilt cities, sheltered his clients through multiple financial storms, and went on to have a hand in pouring the foundations of numerous parts of daily life today including banking, films, amusement parks, medical research, landmarks, and wine produced in California, just to name a few.
There are few entrepreneurs with his level of success and involvement, let alone in so many fields. From banking on barrels in the earthquake ravaged streets of San Francisco to giving footing to Disney and establishing foundations dedicated to defeating disease, A.P. Giannini became a giant…without ever forgetting the “little fellow.”

California Hospitals Face Surge With Proven Fixes And Some Hail Marys
California’s hospitals thought they were ready for the next big disaster.
They’ve retrofitted their buildings to withstand a major earthquake and  whisked patients out of danger during deadly wildfires. They’ve kept patients alive with backup generators amid sweeping power shutoffs and trained their staff to thwart would-be shooters.
But nothing has prepared them for a crisis of the magnitude facing hospitals today.
“We’re in a battle with an unseen enemy, and we have to be fully mobilized in a way that’s never been seen in our careers,” said Dr. Stephen Parodi, an infectious disease expert for Kaiser Permanente in California. (Kaiser Health News, which produces California Healthline, is not affiliated with Kaiser Permanente.)
As California enters the most critical period in the state’s battle against COVID-19, the state’s 416 hospitals — big and small, public and private — are scrambling to build the capacity needed for an onslaught of critically ill patients.

Hospitals from Los Angeles to San Jose are already seeing a steady increase in patients infected by the virus, and so far, hospital officials say they have enough space to treat them. But they also issued a dire warning: What happens over the next four to six weeks will determine whether the experience of California overall looks more like that of New York, which has seen an explosion of hospitalizations and deaths, or like that of the San Francisco Bay Area, which has so far managed to prevent a major spike in new infections, hospitalizations and death.
Some of their preparations share common themes: Postpone elective surgeries. Make greater use of telemedicine to limit face-to-face contact. Erect tents outside to care for less critical patients. Add beds — hospital by hospital, a few dozen at a time — to spaces like cafeterias, operating rooms and decommissioned wings.
But by necessity — because of shortages of testing, ventilators, personal protective equipment and even doctors and nurses — they’re also trying creative and sometimes untried strategies to bolster their readiness and increase their capacity.
In San Diego, hospitals may use college dormitories as alternative care sites. A large public hospital in Los Angeles is turning to 3D printing to manufacture ventilator parts. And in hard-hit Santa Clara County, with a population of nearly 2 million, public and private hospitals have joined forces to alleviate pressure on local hospitals by caring for patients at the Santa Clara Convention Center.
Yet some hospitals acknowledge that, despite their efforts, they may end up having to park patients in hallways.
“The need in this pandemic is so different and so extraordinary and so big that a hospital’s typical surge plan will be insufficient for what we’re dealing with in this state and across the nation,” said Carmela Coyle, president and CEO of the California Hospital Association.
Across the U.S., more than 213,000 cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed, and at least 4,750 people have died. California accounts for more than 9,400 cases and at least 199 deaths.
Health officials and hospital administrators are singling out April as the most consequential month in California’s effort to combat a steep increase in new infections. State Health and Human Services Secretary Mark Ghaly said Wednesday that the number of hospitalizations is expected to peak in mid-May.
Gov. Gavin Newsom said there were 1,855 COVID-19 cases in hospitals Wednesday, a number that had tripled in six days, and 774 patients in critical care. By mid-May, the number of critical care patients is expected to climb to 27,000, he said.
Newsom said the state needs nearly 70,000 more hospital beds, bringing its overall capacity to more than 140,000 — both inside hospitals and also at alternative care sites like convention centers. The state also needs 10,000 more ventilators than it normally has to aid the crush of patients needing help to breathe, he said, and so far has acquired fewer than half.
Newsom and state health officials worked with the Trump administration to bring a naval hospital ship to the Port of Los Angeles, where it is already treating patients not infected with the novel coronavirus. The state is working with the Army Corps of Engineers to deploy eight mobile field hospitals, including one in Santa Clara County. And it is bringing hospitals back online that were shuttered or slated to close, including one each in Daly City, Los Angeles, Long Beach and Costa Mesa.
The governor is also drafting a plan to make greater use of hotels and motels and nursing homes to house patients, if needed.
But the size of the surge that hits hospitals depends on how well the public follows social distancing and stay-at-home orders, said Newsom and hospital administrators. “This is not just about health care providers caring for the sick,” said Dr. Steve Lockhart, the chief medical officer of Sutter Health, which has 22 hospitals across Northern California.
While hospitals welcomed the state assistance, they’re also undertaking dramatic measures to prepare on their own.
“I’m genuinely very worried, and it scares me that so many people are still out there doing business as usual,” said Chris Van Gorder, CEO of Scripps Health, a system with five major hospitals in San Diego County. “It wouldn’t take a lot to overwhelm us.”
Internal projections show the hospital system could need 8,000 beds by June, he said. It has 1,200.
In addition to taking precautions to protect its health care workers — such as using baby monitors to observe patients without risking infection — it is working with area colleges to use dorm rooms as hospital rooms for patients with mild cases of COVID-19, among other efforts, he said.
“Honestly, I think we should have been better prepared than we are,” Van Gorder said. “But hospitals cannot take on this burden themselves.”

Harbor-UCLA is using 3D printers to produce ventilator piping equipped to serve two patients per machine. And in March it transformed a new emergency wing into an intensive care unit for COVID-19 patients.
“This was a shocking thing to do,” Mahajan said of the unprecedented move to create extra space.
He said some measures are untested, but hospitals across the state are facing extreme pressure to do whatever they can to meet their greatest needs.
In March, Stanford Hospital in the San Francisco Bay Area launched a massive telemedicine overhaul of its emergency department to reduce the number of employees who interact with patients in person. This is the first time the hospital has used telemedicine like this, said Dr. Ryan Ribeira, an emergency physician who spearheaded the project.
Stanford also did some soul-searching, thinking about which of its staff might be at highest risk if they catch COVID-19, and has assigned them to parts of the hospital with no coronavirus patients or areas dedicated to telemedicine. “These are people that we might have otherwise had to drop off the schedule,” Ribeira said.
Nearby, several San Francisco hospitals that were previously competitors have joined forces to create a dedicated COVID-19 floor at Saint Francis Memorial Hospital with four dozen critical care beds.
The city currently has 1,300 beds, including 200 ICU beds. If the number of patients surges as it has in New York, officials anticipate needing 5,000 additional beds.
But the San Francisco Bay Area hasn’t yet seen the expected surge. UCSF Health had 15 inpatients with COVID-19 Tuesday. Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center had 18 inpatients with the disease Wednesday.
While hospital officials are cautiously optimistic that local and state stay-at-home orders have worked to slow the spread of the virus, they are still preparing for what could be a major increase in admissions.
“The next two weeks is when we’re really going to see the surge,” said San Francisco General CEO Susan Ehrlich. “We’re preparing for the worst but hoping for the best.”

California’s hospitals thought they were ready for the next big disaster.
They’ve retrofitted their buildings to withstand a major earthquake and  whisked patients out of danger during deadly wildfires. They’ve kept patients alive with backup generators amid sweeping power shutoffs and trained their staff to thwart would-be shooters.
But nothing has prepared them for a crisis of the magnitude facing hospitals today.
“We’re in a battle with an unseen enemy, and we have to be fully mobilized in a way that’s never been seen in our careers,” said Dr. Stephen Parodi, an infectious disease expert for Kaiser Permanente in California. As California enters the most critical period in the state’s battle against COVID-19, the state’s 416 hospitals — big and small, public and private — are scrambling to build the capacity needed for an onslaught of critically ill patients.

Hospitals from Los Angeles to San Jose are already seeing a steady increase in patients infected by the virus, and so far, hospital officials say they have enough space to treat them. But they also issued a dire warning: What happens over the next four to six weeks will determine whether the experience of California overall looks more like that of New York, which has seen an explosion of hospitalizations and deaths, or like that of the San Francisco Bay Area, which has so far managed to prevent a major spike in new infections, hospitalizations and death.
Some of their preparations share common themes: Postpone elective surgeries. Make greater use of telemedicine to limit face-to-face contact. Erect tents outside to care for less critical patients. Add beds — hospital by hospital, a few dozen at a time — to spaces like cafeterias, operating rooms and decommissioned wings.
But by necessity — because of shortages of testing, ventilators, personal protective equipment and even doctors and nurses — they’re also trying creative and sometimes untried strategies to bolster their readiness and increase their capacity.
In San Diego, hospitals may use college dormitories as alternative care sites. A large public hospital in Los Angeles is turning to 3D printing to manufacture ventilator parts. And in hard-hit Santa Clara County, with a population of nearly 2 million, public and private hospitals have joined forces to alleviate pressure on local hospitals by caring for patients at the Santa Clara Convention Center.
Yet some hospitals acknowledge that, despite their efforts, they may end up having to park patients in hallways.
“The need in this pandemic is so different and so extraordinary and so big that a hospital’s typical surge plan will be insufficient for what we’re dealing with in this state and across the nation,” said Carmela Coyle, president and CEO of the California Hospital Association.
Across the U.S., more than 213,000 cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed, and at least 4,750 people have died. California accounts for more than 9,400 cases and at least 199 deaths.
Health officials and hospital administrators are singling out April as the most consequential month in California’s effort to combat a steep increase in new infections. State Health and Human Services Secretary Mark Ghaly said Wednesday that the number of hospitalizations is expected to peak in mid-May.
Gov. Gavin Newsom said there were 1,855 COVID-19 cases in hospitals Wednesday, a number that had tripled in six days, and 774 patients in critical care. By mid-May, the number of critical care patients is expected to climb to 27,000, he said.
Newsom said the state needs nearly 70,000 more hospital beds, bringing its overall capacity to more than 140,000 — both inside hospitals and also at alternative care sites like convention centers. The state also needs 10,000 more ventilators than it normally has to aid the crush of patients needing help to breathe, he said, and so far has acquired fewer than half.
Newsom and state health officials worked with the Trump administration to bring a naval hospital ship to the Port of Los Angeles, where it is already treating patients not infected with the novel coronavirus. The state is working with the Army Corps of Engineers to deploy eight mobile field hospitals, including one in Santa Clara County. And it is bringing hospitals back online that were shuttered or slated to close, including one each in Daly City, Los Angeles, Long Beach and Costa Mesa.
The governor is also drafting a plan to make greater use of hotels and motels and nursing homes to house patients, if needed.
But the size of the surge that hits hospitals depends on how well the public follows social distancing and stay-at-home orders, said Newsom and hospital administrators. “This is not just about health care providers caring for the sick,” said Dr. Steve Lockhart, the chief medical officer of Sutter Health, which has 22 hospitals across Northern California.
While hospitals welcomed the state assistance, they’re also undertaking dramatic measures to prepare on their own.
“I’m genuinely very worried, and it scares me that so many people are still out there doing business as usual,” said Chris Van Gorder, CEO of Scripps Health, a system with five major hospitals in San Diego County. “It wouldn’t take a lot to overwhelm us.”
Internal projections show the hospital system could need 8,000 beds by June, he said. It has 1,200.
In addition to taking precautions to protect its health care workers — such as using baby monitors to observe patients without risking infection — it is working with area colleges to use dorm rooms as hospital rooms for patients with mild cases of COVID-19, among other efforts, he said.
“Honestly, I think we should have been better prepared than we are,” Van Gorder said. “But hospitals cannot take on this burden themselves.”

Search of Gilroy gunman’s home finds items suggesting massive attack, white supremacy materials

Investigators who searched the Nevada home of the Gilroy Garlic Festival shooter found the makings of a massive attack, including a gas mask, bulletproof vest and empty boxes of ammunition, along with reading material on white supremacy and radical Islam, federal law enforcement sources said Tuesday.
The search of the apartment in the desolate town of Walker Lake, in Mineral County, also turned up a knife, a gun light, a camouflage backpack, gun pamphlets, computers and numerous electronic hard drives, an empty bottle of Valium, and a mysterious letter from “Virginia to Santino,” apparently referring to 19-year-old gunman Santino William Legan, according to copies of a search warrant released Tuesday.
The extremist reading materials were not listed among the items found during the early Monday search, but a federal law enforcement official told The Chronicle they were among paper items collected from the unit. The source was not authorized to speak to the media and asked to remain anonymous.
The search affidavit and probable cause statement remained sealed, the Mineral County district attorney said, as the FBI continues its investigation.
Legan, who grew up in Gilroy and nearby Watsonville, killed three people and injured 12 others when he opened fire with a semiautomatic rifle at the annual garlic festival Sunday evening, police said. Within a minute of firing his first shots, Legan was shot and killed by three uniformed police officers who were on patrol at the festival.
Much about Legan and what motivated his attack remains unknown, but the items found in his rented apartment, along with evidence collected in and around the festival site, paint a clearer picture of a planned attack meant to cause massive death and injury.
“We continue to try to understand who the shooter was, what motivated him, and whether he was aligned with any particular ideology,” said Craig Fair, a deputy special agent with the FBI, at a news conference Tuesday.
Gilroy police said they believe Legan acted alone, though they have not fully ruled out that a second person may have been involved. Photos and video from surveillance cameras show Legan shopping at several Gilroy stores the day of the shooting, and he was always alone, said Gilroy Police Chief Scot Smithee.
Police found a shotgun in the vehicle Legan drove to the festival site, which had been parked about a mile away, Smithee said. They also found a bag of ammunition near the creek that Legan is believed to have crossed when he entered the festival through an unguarded fence, possibly to avoid metal detectors at the main gates.
Both the WASR-10 semiautomatic rifle — an AK-47-style weapon used in the attack — and the shotgun that was found in the car were purchased by Legan in Nevada.
Legan bought the semiautomatic rifle from Big Mikes Gun & Ammo in Fallon, Nev., about 65 miles from his apartment in Walker Lake, a federal law enforcement source said. The store is a home-based business, located on a quiet suburban street in the small city. Residents of the home didn’t answer the door on Tuesday afternoon.
The source said Legan bought the Remington 870 shotgun at Juggernaut Arms on July 1, then returned to the store later that month to buy a drum magazine. It is unclear if the gunman used such a magazine in the Gilroy attack.
Investigators will need several more days to finish collecting evidence from the festival site, Fair said. Meanwhile, authorities are scouring Legan’s online activities and searching the electronic devices found in his apartment for clues to what motivated the attack.
“Reviewing digital media, historically, has been very revealing in terms of somebody’s mind-set, ideological beliefs, intentions,” Fair said. “We’ve got to get into the computers, the towers, the thumb drive, the phone, to get a holistic picture of him and who he was in touch with, what sentiments and thoughts he shared with others, what he cataloged for his own consumption.”
Legan did not have much of an online presence. But right before his attack, photos were posted to an Instagram account under his name that referenced a book associated with white supremacy. Fair said the account, which was taken down shortly after the shooting, has not yet been definitively tied to Legan.
In Nevada, meanwhile, the Mineral County sheriff said Tuesday that his department had no contact with Legan during his brief time in Walker Lake, where he lived in the middle unit in a run-down, gray stucco triplex. Walker Lake is an unincorporated outpost of a few hundred people, about 70 miles southeast of Carson City.
His neighbors there said Legan was quiet and kept to himself — which wasn’t unusual in the dusty town, where people often drift through before moving on. Marty Neff, 64, a retiree who lives next door to the apartment Legan had rented, said Legan waved to him a few times as the young man walked to the lake at the end of the town’s one main street.
But, Neff said, it’s hard to remember much about Legan because nobody ever lives in the rentals next door for long.
“They stay there until they can find someplace better to live,” Neff said, pointing up the hill to the triplex.
In interviews with investigators, one of Legan’s brothers said Legan was a loner and in the days before the shooting he gave away pieces of property to people, according to a federal law enforcement source.
As in Walker Lake, Legan did not seem to make much of an impression in Gilroy or Watsonville, where people who went to school with him said they could barely recall his name or face.
Legan attended Monte Vista Christian School in Watsonville between 2013 and 2016, before transferring his senior year to Gilroy High School, where he graduated in 2017. He’d moved to Nevada at some point after high school.
“I saw him around, but not much else,” said Sierra Myer, who graduated from Monte Vista in 2017 with about 200 other students.
Another former Monte Vista student, Anna Moreno-Takegami, said she was shocked to learn that she and Legan had attended the school at the same time, but she didn’t remember ever interacting with him.
“I was just thinking, (what if) he thought about shooting up our high school or the other high school he went to?” she said.
In Gilroy, residents are taking tentative steps toward recovery — raising money for victims, putting up signs around town thanking first responders and offering food, coffee or simply hugs to strangers who are hurting.
The community is rallying around the phrase “Gilroy strong,” even as people try to make sense of how a hometown boy from a well-known family could have struck with such violence.
“I remember the chaos,” said Gilroy Councilman Fred Tovar, who was walking around the festival with police officers Sunday when the shooting began. “At first, walking, you think it’s fireworks. And then you realize it’s more serious than fireworks, you saw people running and falling.”
Since that moment, Tovar said, Gilroy has responded, asking: “How can we help? How do we donate? What are the things we can do? Who needs a place to stay?”
At least seven victims with gunshot wounds remained hospitalized Tuesday, five at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center and two at Stanford.
Crowdfunding sites to help cover victims’ medical expenses were being shared on Twitter, Facebook and other social media. A group of local children organized a lemonade stand to raise money. The Oakland A’s announced that proceeds from sales of garlic fries and Gilroy Garlic Burgers would go toward victims and their families.
At Cal Silk, a small T-shirt printing business on Church Street, dozens of Gilroy residents waited to purchase black T-shirts with a simple message: “#GILROYSTRONG.”
Shop owners Tim and Michele Pierson are printing and selling the $20 shirts on behalf of the Gilroy Foundation and the Gilroy Downtown Business Association, which will donate the proceeds to victims of the shooting and their families.
“It’s a simple, powerful logo,” Tim Pierson said.
The couple were asked to print roughly 600 shirts. By 2 p.m. Tuesday, the organizations had asked the Piersons to print another 1,000 shirts to meet demand.
“It’s my honor to do this for those families,” Michele Pierson said. “Everyone is looking for something to do — this is my part. This is how I can give back and help. The line outside is making that point very clear, that we’re here for each other, we’re here to help each other, and we will not be broken by this event.”

MIT Professor Silvio Micali‘s Algorand project, via the Algorand Foundation, will hold its first in a series of Dutch Auctions out of Singapore on On June 19th, 2019. These auctions will allow Algos, the native tokens of the Algorand platform, to enter circulation via a mechanism where the market determines the fair price. This inaugural auction also marks the launch of the Algorand network.
The co-inventor of zero-knowledge proofs, Micali is an Italian computer scientist at MIT Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory and a professor of computer science in MIT’s Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science since 1983. His research centers on the theory of cryptography and information security. He won the Turing award together with Shafi Goldwasser in 2012 and the Gödel Prize in 1993.

The auction also signifies the launch of the Algorand network, which validates the maturation of MIT professor and Turing Award winner Silvio Micali’s vision to create a more robust and efficient blockchain platform that solves the blockchain trilemma and will ultimately transform the underlying technology of our global financial systems.
Algorand’s TestNet has demonstrated the platform’s ability to solve the blockchain trilemma with key milestones including:
Demonstrating decentralization -TestNet has over 500 nodes deployed around the world
Showcasing scalability – In a series of performance tests with 10,000 globally distributed participants, TestNet consistently reaches over 1,000 transactions per second (tps) with five second latency.
Approved Security– Algorand has recently undergone security audits from Trail of Bits and NCC.
Additionally, a number of organizations have been actively engaged with the Algorand platform in its TestNet phase including Top Network, AssetBlock, Otoy Inc. and Syncsort. These organizations are leveraging Algorand to build new solutions for the borderless economy.
The Algorand Foundation believes in the value of the Algorand platform, the Algo, and the potential for everyone to have an opportunity as we enter a new, borderless economy. With a goal of investing in the sustainability and performance of that economy, the foundation has also announced a refund policy for auction participants. Should any participant be dissatisfied with their purchase of Algos, they may return their Algos back to the foundation one-year post-purchase at up to 90 percent of the value paid.
For the first auction, 25 million Algos will be available at a starting price of $10.00 USD and a reserve price of $0.10 USD. The auction will last for 4,000 blocks (about 5 hours), all bids will be posted to and processed from the Algorand blockchain for transparency and Algos will be distributed after the close of the auction.
