The repetitive click of your heels on the dusty pavement below you seems to be the only thing you can hear over your laboured breathing as you rush to get back to the office building, the place that could only affectionately be described as your own personal hell.
When you'd first gotten the job, the ambiguously labelled title you had been assigned did confuse you at first. However, now as you grip the holder for four coffees in one hand, and a bag carrying a series of different flavoured salads, sandwiches, and kinds of pasta in the other, you realise it was all to cover up what you'd really be.
A bottom-of-the-barrel personal assistant.
The job itself isn't one you would complain about, everyone has got to start somewhere after all, especially coming straight out of college. It's just the assholes you work for that make you long for an escape.
Young men with no degree, making them easily less qualified than you, having the audacity to make requests that must be completed in unrealistic time frames seem to be the bane of your existence. The fact they have the power to do so only down to the fact they have family working the important positions in other branches of the company.
That and the thing hanging between their legs.
Pushing your thoughts of distaste aside, you glance at your wristwatch as you round the last corner of your journey before the building is in sight. You notice you've got a good five minutes before you're eligible for a scolding from your boss and let out a sigh of relief.
But as you get closer to your destination, you notice construction tape seems to have materialised around the walkway to the office building in the fifteen minutes you were gone, men already drilling into the ground you need to walk over to get where you need to be.
As you hurry to the now construction site, you stand for a moment confused, huffing as you look around for anyone who could help you in your predicament.
Your eyes scan a group of men standing by the bed of a pickup truck, presumably talking about their job at hand. You walk along the makeshift fence made up of scuffed traffic cones and more construction tape until you're near enough parallel to the truck, not crossing the tape out of concern you may disrupt whatever's going on.
"Excuse me?" Voice loud enough to be heard but still polite, you gain the attention of a couple of the men, their averted gazes prompting those who didn't initially hear you to look over too. A small but friendly smile pulls at your lips but soon falters when a few of them let out their renditions of low whistles and unsavoury comments towards you.
"You alright, pretty lady?" One of them smirks, dark, invasive eyes giving you a once over as he runs his hand over his dark brown, almost black, hair.
Was this building a magnet for sleazy male stereotypes or something?
"Um, I work here." You stumble over the statement slightly, the discomfort you feel under his penetrative stare affecting your speech as you weakly point at the building behind them.
"Yeah, no shit." The same man darkly chuckles along with a couple of the other workers, eyes raking your form, clad in a blouse and pencil skirt. But you feel you might as well be naked in front of them, stuck there like a deer in headlights as they continue to ogle your body. Before he can make any other comments, he's lightly pushed to the side as another man approaches.
"Shut up, Tommy..." His voice is deep and commanding but has a playful nature behind it, the two of them clearly well acquainted with one another.
He looks to be older than the men around him, broad frame imposing as he comes to where the tape separates you from him. Although, the way he carries himself suggests he's probably in a position where he could do whatever he wanted with the equipment on the site, but have no one to answer to for it.
"How can I help, sweetheart?" He sounds friendly enough but has that dirty, smug look on his face that tells you he's not any better than the men who'd previously been eyeing you like a piece of meat.
Despite the sickly feeling that swirls in the pit of your stomach when looking at him, you realise he's probably your best shot at getting you where you need to be.
"I need to get back in the building," your voice is timid as you try to avoid the burly man's gaze, opting to look back to where men are starting to pull up the concrete slabs that once made up your path back into your workplace. Though the pause after you've spoken prompts you to glance back up at him, catching him looking down the gap between your chest and slightly unbuttoned blouse, "I work here-"
"Yeah, you've said that." he cuts you off with a smirk, taking in your mortified expression before looking over the construction site with a huff. "Well my boys are pretty deep in their work now, and I can't have ya walking through here when we've got equipment running," he gives you another once over, "don't want a pretty girl like you getting hurt, do we?"
He's smiling again, but you see straight through it and tense at the realisation these men will be working here for god knows how long.
"What should I do then?" You ask with furrowed brows, readjusting your hold on the coffees that now uncomfortably weigh down your hand.
"I mean I could carry ya over," he laughs as though it's a joke, but first impressions tell you he'd jump at the opportunity to get his filthy hands on you -- no matter the circumstance, "how bout I take you in the backdoor?"
The way he worded the innuendo didn't fly over your head the way you wish it did, and the combination of his comment and the way he's now running his pink tongue over his bottom lip making you feel sick in multiple ways.
You reluctantly nod, just wanting to get back to work and away from this man. The obnoxious nepo babies that unfairly dominated your field of work suddenly felt like prince charmings in comparison to the man now stepping over the flimsy barrier that once separated you. But as he came that small distance closer, you couldn't help but feel some attraction to his broad frame and tan skin. And those arms...
His slight chuckle pulls you out of your thoughts, wide eyes snapping up to meet his leering expression as prickling heat floods your face in embarrassment.
"C'mon, I'm Joel by the way," he tilts his head, gesturing for you to walk in front of him. It's a request you realise most likely has ulterior motives, but you do so anyway after muttering your name in return.
Rounding the corner, you falter for a moment as the cluttered alley comes into view. Your gut instinct is screaming at you to tell Joel that he can fuck right off back to wherever he came from, but you figure that would cause more commotion than the slim possibility he'd try anything in broad daylight.
But as you carry on down the alley and squeeze past a particularly cluttered area of multiple dumpsters and bins, you become more uncomfortable as he spews another innuendo about how 'it's real tight, huh?'
His irksome behaviour soon becomes less of an annoyance and more of a concern though.
Once you're past the worst of the clutter you soon realise that it wasn't just an obstacle, but also serves as a wall -- blocking any further view for anyone passing by.
Turning around, you merely stand there as Joel comes closer. His daunting frame becomes more intimidating in the dim light of the narrowing lane you now find yourself trapped in, helpless.
"Doors just there," he mutters while pointing to the slightly beaten-up side door to the left of you, a twisted attempt at making you believe you still have any control over this situation.
Not trusting your voice, you simply nod at him with your eyes still locked. You'd prefer him to leave before you turn your back to him, but when he makes no move to do so, you quickly rush to the door in the hopes you may be faster than him.
But faster you are not.
First, you feel the heat radiating off of him, and then you feel the hard chest, the wandering hands, the grinding hips. As he invades your space and presses himself against your back, you try to squirm away, but only end up pinning yourself between the door and his imposing body.
"Where you tryna go, sweetheart?" His breath is hot against your neck, sending shivers down your spine and to places that make your body hot with shame. "You really wanna go back in there? Where those people are just gonna treat you like shit?"
His hips continue to grind into your ass, becoming more calculated rather than ravenous, as though his words and body are working as one to persuade you.
"I know those guys, they'll chew you up and spit you out." His words become harsh and his rough hands harsher, beginning to untuck your blouse from your pencil skirt, reaching up until his fingers are splayed across your stomach. The skin-on-skin contact is undeniably thrilling, as he now caresses it with finesse.
"So fuckin' soft," he mutters into your hair, inhaling before releasing a rumbling groan, "I'd treat you like the sweetest thing, baby."
You grimace at his words, far too much commitment behind them, leaving you spiralling into another panicked frenzy. You squirm again, this time having more success as you're able to turn to face him, although not fully able to escape his unrelenting hold yet. Facing him, you see how dark his eyes have become, set on you like a predator eyeing its prey.
His hair is slightly tousled, the way he'd previously been ravaging your body having that effect. You realise there's no way you can persuade him to stop his pursuit of you, so you decide to cave, at least you hope he thinks so.
"Let's not do this here." You say it quietly so as to not come off too demanding, peering up at him through your lashes in a way that you hope looks innocent enough for him to believe it. "Wouldn't you wanna do this someplace comfier," your voice switches from scared to sultry, “hm?”
He quirks a brow at this, slowing his assault on your body to a stop, but not yet taking his hands off of you, “you wanna do this somewhere else, sweetheart?”
The pet name still irks you, but provides some ease in telling you your comment hasn’t pissed him off at all. Trying to run along with your manipulative escape, you nod up at him, taking your bottom lip between your teeth and pushing your own crotch closer to his. You tell yourself it’s all for the bigger picture, but you can’t ignore the way your body has come more accustomed to his touch in such a short period of time.
"Mhm,” you’re nodding again, placing a hand on his firm chest, and slowly, teasingly, sliding it lower, “do this where you can take real good care of me… Show me what I'm missing?"
There's a pause, his expression unreadable as he continues to penetrate your façade with his stare. His lack of response has you rethinking your words, brows twitching as more sick scenarios of what could ensue consume your thoughts. But then a dark chuckle fills the tense silence, Joel shaking his head as he smirks down at you. Stepping back, he tucks his hands into his pockets and gives you one last once over before nodding his head and making his way back down the alley.
"I'll keep an eye out," are his last words before he disappears past the trash and clutter, out of sight.
But maybe not quite out of mind...

A few days had passed since the PTA meeting, and you were still adjusting to your new life in Austin, Texas. The town was unfamiliar to you, and the job offer had been the only one available at the time. Thankfully, your cousin lived in Austin and had kindly offered you a place to stay. The apartment wasn’t large, but it was cozy and gave you a sense of security in this new environment.
Settling into your new role at the school, you found that the staff and students were welcoming. The school itself had a warm, community-driven atmosphere that you appreciated. Your class was manageable, and you even began to grow fond of your students. They were eager to learn and showed respect in the classroom, which made your job easier and more enjoyable.
One student, in particular, stood out to you: Sarah Miller. She had a natural curiosity for science and was always eager to help. During science classes, Sarah often assisted you in arranging the flasks and beakers on the shelf, her enthusiasm evident in the way she carefully handled each piece of equipment.
One afternoon, as you were setting up for a lab experiment, Sarah approached with a smile. “Do you need any help?”
You returned her smile warmly. “That would be great, Sarah. Could you please arrange these beakers on the top shelf?”
Sarah nodded and began to carefully place the beakers in their designated spots. As she worked, you couldn’t help but feel grateful for her assistance. It made the transition into your new role smoother and less overwhelming.
“How are you finding Austin so far?” Sarah asked, her voice full of genuine curiosity.
You paused for a moment, considering your response. “It’s been an adjustment, but I’m starting to feel more at home. My cousin has been a huge help, and the school is wonderful. I really enjoy teaching here.”
Sarah beamed. “I’m glad to hear that! You’re a great teacher. Everyone in class really likes you.”
Her words warmed your heart. “Thank you, Sarah. That means a lot to me.”
As Sarah carefully placed the beakers on the shelf, you couldn’t help but notice how meticulous and dedicated she was. Her assistance was invaluable, making your adjustment to the new job much smoother. You watched her for a moment, grateful for her help and impressed by her enthusiasm.
Sarah glanced over her shoulder at you, a thoughtful expression on her face. “Have you had a chance to visit any places around Texas yet?”
You shook your head, a small smile playing on your lips. “Not really, Sarah. I haven’t had much time to explore. The only place I’ve really been to is the grocery store near my apartment.”
Sarah giggled, her eyes sparkling with mischief. “You know, there’s a great place for horseback riding just a mile away from here. My dad has a truck, and we go there sometimes. Would you like to join us?”
Her suggestion took you by surprise. It felt a bit unusual to be invited out by a student, especially since you were still getting to know them. You felt a mix of flattery and apprehension, unsure how to respond.
“That’s very kind of you, Sarah,” you said politely. “I’ll think about it.”
Sarah nodded, seemingly satisfied with your answer, but you could see the gears turning in her mind. She returned to her task, her expression thoughtful.
Internally, Sarah was plotting. She adored you and knew her dad had been lonely for a long time. What better way to help both of them than by arranging a casual outing? She envisioned them enjoying a day out, her dad relaxing and having fun, and you, seeing a new side of Texas. Maybe, just maybe, her plan would help bring a bit of happiness into both of your lives.
As you continued to prepare for the lab experiment, you couldn’t help but think about Sarah’s suggestion. The idea of horseback riding sounded fun, but the prospect of spending time with Sarah and her father outside of school felt a bit strange. You appreciated the gesture, though, and couldn’t deny a small part of you was curious about the experience.
Later, as you walked around the classroom, checking on the students and ensuring everything was in place, you found yourself thinking more about the invitation. Sarah’s enthusiasm was infectious, and her desire to share her favorite activities with you was touching.
As the day went on, you decided to keep an open mind. You could see how much Sarah cared about both her father and her teacher, and maybe this outing could be a chance to bond with her and better understand the community you were becoming a part of.
“Alright, everyone, time to wrap up,” you announced, bringing the class to a close. As the students gathered their things and prepared to leave, Sarah gave you a bright smile, and you couldn’t help but return it, feeling a sense of warmth and connection.
As you watched the students file out of the classroom, a wave of mixed emotions washed over you. The hustle and bustle of the day was winding down, and you found yourself alone with your thoughts. The adjustment to life in Austin had been challenging, to say the least. Moving away from your parents was a difficult decision, but the job offer had seemed like a beacon of hope at the time. Now, you weren't so sure.
Loneliness had become an unwelcome companion over the past few weeks. Your parents had been supportive, encouraging you with words of wisdom and confidence, assuring you that you could thrive on your own. But their words felt distant in the face of your current reality. Each day felt like a test of endurance, and even the small victories were overshadowed by an overwhelming sense of isolation.
The faculty room, a place that should have been a source of camaraderie and support, only intensified your feelings of being an outsider. You were the youngest among your colleagues, and their close-knit conversations left you feeling invisible during break times. They had their routines, their inside jokes, and you often found yourself on the periphery, unsure of how to break into their circle.
Your thoughts drifted back to Sarah Miller. She had been a ray of sunshine in an otherwise cloudy experience. Her genuine kindness and eagerness to help had been a lifeline. When she invited you to go horseback riding with her and her father, it had been the first time anyone in Austin had reached out to you in such a personal way. The invitation felt like a small crack in the wall of loneliness that had been building around you.
You sighed, leaning back in your chair, staring at the now-empty classroom. The idea of spending time with Sarah and her father was starting to seem more appealing. Maybe it was a chance to break out of your shell, to connect with the community, and to find a sense of belonging that you desperately needed.
"Why not give it a try?" you thought to yourself. "It’s just an afternoon, and it could be fun."
The image of Sarah’s bright smile flashed in your mind, and you felt a flicker of hope. Her invitation was a small gesture, but it held the potential to change the trajectory of your experience in Austin. Maybe, just maybe, it was a step toward finding the connections and support that you had been yearning for since your move.
You packed your things, the classroom now quiet and still. As you walked out, you made a silent promise to yourself: you would accept Sarah’s invitation.
Life as a teacher continued for you. The final bell rang, and the bustling energy of students packing their bags and heading out the door filled the classroom. You busied yourself with tidying up, ensuring everything was in place for the next day. As you straightened the books on your desk, you glanced up and were surprised to see Joel Miller standing in the doorway.
Your eyes quickly took in his appearance—typical flannel shirt, worn out jeans, and work boots covered in a thin layer of dust. He looked as though he had come straight from a job site. Despite his rugged appearance, there was a certain warmth in his eyes that you found comforting. You gave him a friendly smile.
"Mr. Miller, come on in," you said, motioning him into the classroom.
Joel stepped inside, looking slightly out of place in the tidy, structured environment of the classroom. Just as he was about to speak, Sarah and her friends came up behind him, chattering and laughing.
"Hey, Dad," Sarah greeted, a playful glint in her eye. "I’m going to hang out with Maddie for a bit."
Joel turned to her, a familiar, fatherly concern in his voice. "Alright, but remember, Uncle Tommy is picking you up before dinner. Don’t be late."
Sarah nodded, a mischievous smile playing on her lips. "Got it, Dad." Then, she glanced at you and back at her father, her smile growing wider. "And Dad, don’t forget to shoot your shot."
Joel looked momentarily confused, his brows furrowing. But then he caught the way Sarah glanced at you, and understanding dawned on his face. His cheeks flushed slightly, and he turned back to his daughter, trying to maintain his composure.
"Sarah, you need to go," he said firmly, though his tone was tinged with embarrassment.
Sarah laughed, a light, carefree sound, and gave him a quick hug before skipping off to join her friends. You watched her go, feeling a mix of amusement and curiosity.
Turning your attention back to Joel, you could see he was still slightly flustered by his daughter’s teasing. You decided to break the ice.
"So, you’re here for the field trip plans, Mr. Miller?" you asked, keeping your tone light.
Joel scratched the back of his neck, a sheepish smile forming on his lips. “You can call me Joel, Ma’am. And yes, here are the plans.” Joel handed you over a piece of paper, and it’s handwritten by him. Ever since the PTA meeting where he was elected class president, the responsibility had weighed heavily on him. He had no idea how to organize a field trip, and the last thing he wanted was to embarrass himself in front of you, the new teacher. Earlier, Joel sat at the dining room table, papers strewn about in a chaotic mess. He rubbed his temples, staring at the tentative plans for the upcoming field trip.
His brother, Tommy, wandered into the room, a look of confusion on his face. "What’s got you all riled up, brother?" he asked, eyeing the disarray on the table.
Before Joel could respond, Sarah chimed in, a knowing smirk on her face as she drank her hot cocoa. "Dad’s trying to impress the new teacher," she said, not bothering to hide her amusement.
Tommy's eyebrows shot up, and he plopped down beside Joel, his expression turning into one of playful mischief. "Is that so? Trying to impress the teacher, huh?"
Joel sighed, feeling a flush of embarrassment. "It's not like that," he muttered defensively. "I'm just trying to get these plans sorted out. Also, she seems younger, you know?"
Tommy laughed, clapping Joel on the back. "You’re making excuses, man. I’ve never seen you this worked up about anything before. Sounds to me like you’re more interested in her than you’re letting on."
Joel shook his head, but he couldn’t help the small smile that tugged at his lips. "She's just trying to do her job, and I don't want to make things harder for her. That's all."
Sarah giggled, leaning against the doorframe. "Sure, Dad. Whatever you say."
Tommy leaned back in his chair, still grinning. "Look, Joel, it’s okay to admit you find her interesting. But you can’t stress yourself out over this. We’ll help you figure it out. It’s just a field trip. Goddamn, you’re a lot more stingy to this rather than talking to the grumpy old man across the street that you almost cussed out."
Joel glanced at his brother and daughter, feeling a mix of frustration and gratitude. He appreciated their support, even if their teasing was relentless. "Alright, alright," he said, holding up his hands in surrender. "Let’s figure this out together."
They spent the next hour brainstorming ideas, Tommy throwing out suggestions with his usual carefree attitude while Sarah chimed in with practical advice. Slowly, the plans started to take shape. Joel felt the tension in his shoulders ease as they worked through the details. At least, he had an initial idea for your class’ field trip.
As the last of the students filtered out of the classroom, Sarah gave her father a mischievous grin before heading off with her friends. Joel watched her go, feeling a mix of pride and trepidation. Once the room was quiet, he turned his attention back to you, taking a deep breath. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a folded piece of paper, handing it to you.
"This is, uh, the rough draft of the field trip plans," he said, his voice a bit strained with nerves.
You took the paper with a warm smile and gestured to an empty chair nearby. "Why don’t you grab a seat Mr. Miller? We can go over this together."
“You can just call me Joel, Maam,” you nodded and looked through the paper.
Joel hesitated for a moment, but then he dragged the chair over and sat down beside you. You unfolded the paper, smoothing it out on your desk, and pulled out a pink ballpen from your pocket.
His eyes shifted from the paper to the colorful array of pens spilling out of your pencil case. The case itself was decorated with playful designs and a few strips of washi tape, each adding a personal touch that he found unexpectedly charming. He watched as you reached for your pink ballpen, your fingers deftly maneuvering it as you made notes on his rough draft.
As you started scribbling on the paper, Joel’s brow furrowed, a look of concern crossing his face. "Am I doing something wrong?" he asked, his voice tinged with worry.
You looked up, noticing his apprehension. "Oh, no! It’s just a habit of mine," you explained with a reassuring smile. "I like to doodle while I think. Helps me focus."
Joel nodded, relaxing slightly. He watched as you continued to make notes.
He couldn't help but smile as he observed your methodical yet creative approach. The pink ink swirled across the paper, punctuated by little stars and hearts that danced around your comments and suggestions. Joel was taken aback by how much personality you injected into such a simple task. It was endearing.
As he continued to watch, he found his gaze drifting towards you. He tried to be subtle, but his eyes traced the curve of your hand as it moved, the way your brow furrowed in concentration, and the gentle way you bit your lip when you were deep in thought. There was something soothing about your presence, a quiet confidence that he hadn't expected.
Joel's attention was momentarily drawn to the scent of vanilla that wafted towards him every time you moved. It was light and sweet, complementing the warmth of the room and adding another layer to the growing sense of comfort he felt in your company.
He shifted in his seat, trying to focus back on the task at hand, but his eyes kept returning to you. The way the afternoon sunlight streamed through the window, catching the strands of your hair and casting a soft glow around you, made it hard to look away. He was struck by how natural and unassuming you were, yet there was an undeniable spark that drew him in.
As you scribbled another note, you looked up, catching Joel's intent gaze. For a moment, neither of you spoke, the air thick with unspoken words. You broke the silence with a warm smile, your eyes crinkling at the corners. "You okay, Joel?" you asked, your voice soft and kind.
Joel cleared his throat, feeling a flush rise to his cheeks. "Yeah, just... watching you work. It's impressive."
You laughed lightly, “Thanks, Joel.”
Returning to the paper, you continued making notes, occasionally glancing up at Joel to ensure he was following along. He tried to focus, but his mind kept drifting back to the little details—the pink pen, the vanilla scent, the way you looked so at ease in your element.
After a few minutes, you paused, tapping the pen thoughtfully against your chin.
"I really like your idea of taking the kids somewhere engaging and interactive," you said, turning to look at him. "Rather than just going to a zoo or a museum, something hands-on will be much more memorable for them."
Joel’s eyes widened in surprise. "You really think so? I wasn’t sure if it was a good idea."
You nodded enthusiastically. "Absolutely. Kids learn best when they’re actively involved. It’s a great way to make the experience more meaningful."
Joel felt a swell of pride at your words. He had spent hours agonizing over those plans, and hearing your approval was incredibly validating. "Thanks," he said, a genuine smile spreading across his face. "That means a lot."
You returned his smile, your eyes twinkling with encouragement. "We’ll just need to iron out a few details, like permissions and logistics, but overall, I think you’re on the right track."
Joel leaned in closer, his confidence growing. "Alright, let’s do this then."
For the next half hour, the two of you worked together, discussing various aspects of the field trip. You appreciated Joel’s practical insights and his willingness to listen to your suggestions. He sat beside you at the small, cluttered desk in the classroom, the map of Austin spread out between you. His rough draft of the field trip plans was covered with your colorful scribbles, and now you were both leaning over the map, discussing potential locations.
"What about this park?" Joel suggested, pointing to a green area on the map. "It's got a nice picnic area and some trails. The kids might enjoy that."
You nodded thoughtfully, considering the idea. "That sounds great. It would be good for them to have some outdoor time."
As you both continued brainstorming, you glanced up from the map and remembered something Sarah had mentioned earlier. "You know," you began, "Sarah mentioned something about horseback riding. She invited me to come along with you two."
Joel's eyes widened in surprise. "She did? What exactly did she say?"
You smiled, recounting the conversation. "She said you have a truck and that there's a place just a mile away. She thought it would be fun if we all went together."
Joel chuckled softly, shaking his head. He knew what his daughter was doing and it’s not even subtle anymore but he did notice that you had no idea what his mischievous daughter was doing. Before he could say more, you interrupted, your eyes sparkling with genuine interest. "Actually, I'm interested. It sounds like a lot of fun."
Joel was momentarily speechless. He hadn't expected you to be so open to the idea. Gathering his thoughts, he finally managed to say, "Well, that would be great. I think it could be a lot of fun, too."
As you both continued discussing the field trip, you glanced at the clock on the wall and realized how late it had gotten. "Oh wow, it's already seven in the evening," you said, surprised. "I think we've done enough for today."
Joel looked at the time and nodded. "Yeah, we should probably call it a day."
As you started packing up your things, Joel looked at you earnestly. "Let me take you home," he offered. "It's getting late, and I don't want you walking home alone. This town has its share of people who might take advantage of someone new."
You hesitated, not wanting to be a bother. "I appreciate it, but I don't want to trouble you."
Joel shook his head firmly. "It's no trouble at all. I insist."
Seeing the genuine concern in his eyes, you nodded in agreement. "Alright, thank you, Joel. I appreciate it."
Together, you left the school, the evening air cool and refreshing. As you walked to his truck, you felt a sense of camaraderie growing between you. Joel opened the passenger door for you, and you climbed in, feeling a mix of gratitude and curiosity about where this new connection might lead.
As Joel drove the truck with you in the passenger seat, he suddenly glanced over at you and asked, "Is it okay if we drive through McDonald's? It's for Sarah."
You smiled and nodded. "Of course, that's fine."
The drive to McDonald's was accompanied by a comfortable silence, punctuated by the hum of the engine and the occasional rustle of papers from the plans you had been working on together. Joel broke the silence, his voice warm and curious. "So, where are you originally from?"
"I'm from Louisiana," you replied, a hint of homesickness in your voice. "This is my first time being away from my family."
Joel nodded, his expression empathetic. "I know it can be tough, especially when you're used to having them around. Just a piece of advice, though: don't walk around at night alone. And if you need anything, you can call me anytime."
You appreciated his concern but didn't want to be a bother. "Thank you, Joel. I don't want to impose, especially since you have a busy work schedule."
Joel waved off your concerns. "It's no imposition at all." He reached out to the dashboard, retrieved a calling card from his company, and handed it to you. "My number is on there. Don't hesitate to call if you need anything."
You took the card, touched by his kindness. "Thank you, Joel. I really appreciate it."
A few minutes later, the truck pulled into the McDonald's drive-through. As you approached the ordering kiosk, the cashier's voice crackled through the telecom. "Welcome to McDonald's. Can I take your order?"
Joel leaned over to the speaker and ordered, "I'll take two Big Macs and fries, please." Then he turned to you. "And what would you like?"
You hesitated, not wanting to add to the order, but Joel's encouraging nod made you feel more at ease. "I'll have a chicken burger, please."
Joel relayed your order to the cashier. "And a chicken burger as well, thanks."
As you waited for the food, Joel glanced at you with a smile. "Louisiana, huh? Must be quite a change coming to Austin."
You nodded, thinking about the differences between the two places. "It is. But I'm slowly adjusting. Your daughter, Sarah, has been a big help since I came to the class."
Joel chuckled. "She's a good kid. Always looking out for people."
The truck rolled forward to the pick-up window. The cashier handed over the bags of food, and Joel passed them to you to hold. As he paid and received the change, you couldn't help but feel a growing sense of admiration for him. His kindness and willingness to help made the transition to your new life a little bit easier.
"Thanks for doing this, Joel," you said as he pulled out of the drive-through and headed back towards your apartment.
"No problem at all," he replied. "I'm glad to help."
When you finally reached your apartment, Joel parked the truck and turned to you. "I'll walk you to your door."
You nodded, appreciating the gesture. As you both got out and he walked you to your apartment, the evening air was filled with the quiet chirping of crickets. When you reached your door, you turned to him with a smile. "Thanks again, Joel. For everything."
"Anytime," he replied, giving you a reassuring smile. "Have a good night."
"You too," you said, watching as he made his way back to the truck.
As you entered your apartment, the cozy familiarity of the small space greeted you. You placed your bag on the kitchen counter, the scent of vanilla lingering from your perfume. Joel Miller's calling card was still in your hand, and you set it down next to the fruit bowl, taking a moment to reflect on the evening.
Joel Miller. He was an enigma. In the classroom, his rugged appearance had caught your eye: the typical flannel shirt, worn-out jeans, and work boots—he exuded a blend of ruggedness and reliability. You remembered how he had seemed hesitant but determined to discuss the field trip plans, his deep voice carrying a hint of nervousness. Despite his rough exterior, there was a gentleness in the way he interacted with you and his daughter.
You recalled his strong hands pointing out locations on the map, the subtle scent of sawdust and pine mingling with the vanilla of your perfume. His genuine concern for your safety had touched you, and his easy smile had made you feel at ease.
But then you shook your head, trying to dispel those thoughts. Joel was a parent, and you were a teacher. It was inappropriate to think of him in any other way. You needed to maintain professionalism, especially since Sarah was one of your favorite students.
You made your way to the bathroom, flicking on the light. The cool tile floor under your feet grounded you as you leaned over the sink, splashing your face with cold water. The shock of the cold helped clear your mind. You stared at your reflection, droplets of water clinging to your skin.
"Cut it out," you muttered to yourself, gripping the edges of the sink. "He's just a parent. Focus on your job."
You took a deep breath and stood up straight, grabbing a towel to pat your face dry. The lingering thoughts of Joel Miller needed to be pushed aside. You were here to teach and not to get distracted by the rugged charm of one of your student’s parents.
You walked back into the living room and sat on the couch, opening your laptop to review tomorrow’s lesson plans. Immersing yourself in work was the best way to push those thoughts away. As you typed away, you reminded yourself of your priorities: teaching, supporting your students, and adjusting to life in Austin.
Everything else, including your confusing emotions about Joel Miller, would have to wait.
Whatever that even means for you.

Ghost Part 4 | Joel Miller
Pairing: Joel Miller x GN!Reader
Word Count: 1.4k
Synopsis: Reader, Joel, and Ellie continue their journey to Colorado. Cute moments between the trio, as well as a late night discussion near the fire between Reader and Joel. Still a slow burn folks.
Warnings: Implied physical abuse (in reference to the Military school Ellie went to), Sexual tension, Imperial measurement system used, Y2K mentioned.
Author’s Note: She’s a little short but I hope you forgive me as it was technically supposed to be half a chapter. Reader is given some more specific personal details due to the types of conversations had on the trip. Reader was a teacher, and it’s implied they have left-leaning political beliefs. It’s also clarified that the reader has known Joel for at least 10 years, so there’s definitely more of a specific age range the reader is supposed to fall in, but I guess you could just ignore that. Ellie is slightly out of character because this girl would never willingly go to sleep but I need it to happen for plot.
Previous Chapter, Next Chapter
___
You sway slightly on the horse, now riding side-by-side Ellie and Joel on a wider path. The journey so far has been filled with light banter and Ellie’s endless questions about the time before, wondering if things were different than they are now.
“Back then, there were two main ways of looking at things,” Joel says. “Some people wanted to own everything, and some people didn’t want anyone to own anything at all.” For a moment you’re tempted to interject, to correct the oversimplification, but you ultimately decide against it. It doesn’t really matter now anyways.
“Which one were you?” Ellie asks.
“Neither.” Joel responds. “I just did my job.”
“Which was… building?” Ellie fills in, occasionally glancing at the forest surrounding you.
“That’s right. Houses, stores, that kind of thing.” For a moment you imagine what Joel might have been like before all this. Doing hard, honest labor, coming home to a kid and maybe a spouse. You had met him nearly a decade in, so there was little frame of reference aside from his current behavior. You wondered had you met him back then if you would get to hear him laugh more.
“We were called contractors.” He finishes his explanation.
“The contractor.” Ellie repeats in a silly deep voice, causing you to laugh. “That’s pretty cool.”
“Yeah…” Joel pauses. “We were cool. Everybody loved contractors.” Joel said, sharing a grin and a knowing look with you. Thankfully you manage to stifle your laughter, maintaining Ellie’s romanticized view of Joel's previous occupation.
You suggest you begin to make camp as the sun begins setting. Taking the steps to create a fire after tying your horses to a nearby tree. You stretch out your back, it having become stiff from the day's journey.
It’s at this point you notice Joel starting to make preparations for dinner, crouched over the fire with Ellie sitting beside him.
“How about you let me handle this tonight, cowboy?” You say from behind him. Ellie laughs at the nickname as he turns to look up at you with an incredulous but slightly amused look on his face. “Take a break.” You suggest.
“I do not need-” he stops, looking at the hand you’ve extended for him to give you whatever non-perishables you’d be feasting on that night. He sighs, but ultimately forfeits and allows you to take over, finding a comfortable stop to wind down at. Ellie remains in the spot she held next to Joel, watching as you make dinner.
“Hey! Wait a minute.” She says excitedly, startling you. “You’ve never told me what you did before.”
“I was a teacher.” You respond with a small smile.
“Oh.” Ellie says, clearly disappointed as her posture deflates.
“Yeah, it’s certainly no contractor.” You say sarcastically.
“I mean, it’s just that you don’t really seem like a teacher.” Ellie clarifies.
“What’s that supposed to mean?” You turn to her and ask with a fake offense.
“Well all my teachers were really mean.” She says, pausing as she brings her knees up to her chest and rests her chin on them. “I mean, they yelled and…” she trailed off, staring into the fire. Your face falls.
You’d heard stories about the Military Schools in the QZ. Sometimes younger officers, freshly graduated, would get a little too drunk; say things of an unpatriotic nature that they wouldn’t have otherwise. What horrified you the most is that they don’t even fully grasp the extent of the abuse. So much of it is normalized within those walls.
“I’m sorry, that’s not right. It shouldn’t be like that.” You say quietly while stirring the contents of the pot.
Ellie shrugs, arms moving up to cover more of her face. You sat panicked for a minute, desperately trying to come up with a change in subject to improve her mood.
“Do you know what Y2K is?” You look down and ask.
“No.” She replies, shaking her head.
“Ah!” You say, sitting back slightly from the food. “Well then, let me tell you about a time we thought the whole world was going to end from turning a page on our calendars.” You say in a theatrical voice.
“Wait really?!” Ellie says perking up, a grin forming on her face.
“Yes! And all because of computers…” You say, wiggling your fingers ominously.
Dinner was good, well as good as soup from a can can be. Still, the company around you was pleasant with Joel finishing his nap and rejoining the conversation once food was served. After the sun had set, Ellie took to her bed roll and went to sleep. Which left you and Joel to softly discuss your plans for the rest of the journey.
Once the “business” talk was done things quieted down, and your ears filled with the sound of a crackling fire as worry grew about Joel mentioning the previous night.
His head was held straight but his gaze towards his hands. His lips pressed together lightly as he cleared his throat.
“Look uh,” he starts in a low voice, tilting his head to the side as he looks at you. “You were right.” You felt your chest tighten at his words.
“I’m sure I was, but about what?” You say, feigning ignorance. He gives a tense laugh that is really more of an exhale.
“That I…” He pauses, averting his gaze as he sways his head with his words. “That I don't have to be alone, that I don’t have to go through… things… alone.” You nod slowly with a smile.
“I’m glad that you realized that… that you feel that way.” You say in an equally tense tone as you toy with the material of your jacket. A silence falls over the two of you once again.
You briefly look up to appreciate the star filled sky, debating whether or not to say something. However you open your mouth to speak at the same time Joel does, resulting in a string of apologies and insistences that the other go first. Ultimately he wins and you speak.
“With the uh, other stuff… I said.” You say, ducking your head and bringing a hand up to rub the back of your neck. “I didn’t mean to make you uncomfortable or,” you gesture your hand at nothing. “Y’know anything like that I just-”
“You didn’t.” He cuts you off.
“Oh, okay. Well… good.” You say somewhat relieved, glad that you hadn’t offended your friend of many years, but still uncertain of where you stood with him. It grows quiet again and you turn to Joel, trying to get a read off him. His brow is drawn together in thought as his mouth opens to speak.
“Did you mean it?” He finally says, turning to look at you. His dark eyes look to yours from less than a foot away with firelight glinting off of them. Both of you had not realized how close you had become in your attempts to quiet the conversation. Your heart quickens in your chest.
“Yes.” You say breathily, knowing what he is referring to. His eyes flicker down to your lips as his own part. You swallow, mouth suddenly becoming very dry. From the corner of your eye you can see his chest fall and rise and quickly as your own, breath becoming heavy.
You both gasp as a log tumble from the top of the fire, startling you. Turning back to Joel you see a blush coming across his face, no doubt reflecting your own.
“You should uh,” he starts, licking his lips and leaning back slightly. “You should probably get some rest.” He says in a hushed voice, lips upturned in a way that is barely noticeable.
“Yes.” You say, pausing as your brain takes a moment to process. “Right, yes.” You stumble slightly when standing up, the blush on your face deepening with embarrassment.
“Good night, Joel.” You stammer out before going over and climbing into your sleeping bag.
“Night.” He says lowly, adding your name to the end. He adjusts his posture, preparing for the next few hours of watch. Just a few feet away you do your best to calm your heart and mind, knowing for certain that was not all just in your head.

The World We Knew ~ Part 2
Tumblr media
A Y/N and Soap Mactavish Story
The outside of the plane bustled with life the moment I stepped off, I always hated how the heat would get trapped inside those planes almost as if I was in an oven begin baked alive.
As I stepped out of the plane I let warm sun sunbathe my skin, I liked how warm it felt I could the breeze flowing along my hair. I was so relaxed I could almost stay in this state of mind forever.
I opened my eyes to be met by a small group of me .One of them steps forward to approach me.
"Lieutenant (L/N) or do you prefer to be called the Flash" the colonel, Alejandro Vargas welcomed me. The way my name rolled off his tongue with his rich accent, was so sexy to me.
He extends his hand to meet mines and I gladly shake his hand only for him to caress it and bring my hand to his lips giving a small kiss.
so he did read my file I smirk to myself as I gave a small chuckle "Flash will do" I glance over to the other boys one wearing a mask which caught my curiosity and the other one with his
hair as a mohawk his bright blue eyes captivated me it was almost as if I was looking at the ocean, it reminded me of the beaches in Mami where I spent all my free time listening to the waves crashing against the rocks.
"I'm Soap, I guess ghost isn't the only LT here anymore"
'like actual soap, hm intresting?" I smirked, Soap let out a small chuckle and smiled as he shakes my hand, I turn over my attention to the one that is wearing a mask which immensely I met with an intimidating gaze coming from him
"He's not much of a talk" Soap buts in I nodded and turn my attention towards Alejandro gesturing his head towards the SUVs behind him.
"I've never been to Mexico," I stated, making Alejandro chuckle lightly
"This isn't Mexico." as he extended his arms out "This is Las Almas"
"Shepherd" contractors are inbound to reinforcers. They're bringing hardware, they'll need room." Ghost states, Alejandro turns his head in acknowledgement.
All down to business, I think to myself where's the fun in that.
"My base is your base"
"Good, Now where's Hassan?"
"Cartel safe-house, ten clicks from here." Alejandro opens the door for me and winks at me which I smile lightly he closes the door and whistles loudly letting the SUVs
'Vamos, Vamos"
༻︵𓏶︵༺
Las Almas was beautifully filled with life, and creativity and so vibrant I always wanted to go to Mexico, I remember as a kid I would cling on to my Gramps for dear life begging him not to go on those missions since I didn't want to stay with the nanny even though she was nice. He would whisper down to my small ear and tell me he would bring me a souvenir.
For all those dangerous missions he would go to he would bring me souvenirs from different places he would go. Out of all the souvenirs he brought me my favorite was the conch shell from the beaches of Normandy he had given me for Christmas when I was 7 and I've kept and cherish it all these years.
I look out the window there was the natural beauty of nature filling the streets, alleyways, and nearby plazas. People strolled along the embedded with stones, the sidewalks clean and free of dirt. Trees and plants grew in abundance, creating limited shade even in the middle of the day
Kids played on the sidewalk, enjoying the warm weather and breezy air. I always wished to have friends growing up I was always alone the only thing I had was the giant house my Gramps brought near the shore of the beach and the serenity of the ocean it brought me peace. due to my Gramps job and the risks, it came with everything had to be done in secret. He didn't want me to get caught up with the Mania of his job apart from my birth.
I snap out of my thoughts and focus on reality stuck in the middle with two soldiers who could literally squish me, with their bulky muscles following ahead in front is an SUV that is leading the way.
"White truck, four armed in the back." Soap stated I spot it in the distance the truck quickly comes into view from his window, revealing the four men he was talking about all had their faces covered equipped with assault rifles.
My hand slowly grips my rifles carefully from begin obvious just in case there is any conflict.
"Hey "tranquilla" Alejandro was quick to assure me that everything was fine
"That's normal here. Guns on the street is a jurisdiction of the police."
"Where are the police." Ghost and Alejandro look at each other through the rearview mirror.
"Well, Las Almas has a very serious problem. there are a few that uphold the law, many who resist corruption... disappear."
"What about the military," soap questioned
"Well because we are well trained, soldiers are recruited by the narcos."
"Why not you?"
"We grew up here." In one instance you could tell Alejandro had a special connection to this town and to its memories. he will fight till the very end to keep those special memories.
"They call us Los Vaqueros, Cowboys. we love this place and would die fighting for it."
The vehicles trailed along passing by a small open area that was filled with shaded large trees. on the sidewalk, I was given a view of a man in a black tank top shirt who wore a skull mask beside him was a square cart, that was balloons tied to the cart. the balloons which the sun reflected on the side walk showing their beautiful colors.
The man handed a gold star-shaped balloon to the boy beside him were two men who were on guard on them they were carrying assault rifles.
"Kids, guns, and balloons .. that's a new one," Soap stated as he looked at me for a brief moment and then to Alejandro through the rearview mirror
"Narcos use generosity to win over the people."
"Even Children." I felt a pang in my heart these children didn't deserve to be brainwashed especially by narcos who cause nothing but destruction. in their way
"Especially the children" an unrecognized new voice spoke up, the driver speaks I think to myself
"Como te llamas senora?" the driver asked, trying to start a conversation with me since the drive got way to damn quiet.
"El Flash" I responded, watching from the rearview mirror his head slowly nod in acknowledgement
"You must be fast in the field, I'm Rodolfo Parra but you can call me Rudy" I smile and nod my head in acknowledgment as he watches you from the rearview mirror returning a smile back
All of a sudden the vehicle slowly comes to a stop. I slowly peered towards ghost's window along with Soap and tried to get a glimpse of what it is. My eyes were met with bright white sheets and had black writing on them covering the abandoned bodies.
"What's on those sheets?" Soap asked
"Narcomantas"
"Cartel Cloths" Rudy translates
"Message from El Sin Nombre. Warnings, marking territory. our streets are laced with death."
Before arriving in Las Almas Laswell gave you a brief introduction on who is El Sin Nombre and that he has been an issue in Las Almas but before I could ask who was El Sin Nombre ghost beat me to it.
"Who's Sin Nombre"
"El Sin Nombre", Alejandro corrected him. "The nameless, the leader of the Las Almas.'
"Where can we find him" my voice laced with a bitter tone
"You can't, no one knows who he is. but he's everywhere." Alejandro peered over the rear view of the mirror to make direct eye contact with me, but also watched the vehicles behind following us.
"And this is a challenge" I could sense a growing smile let alone Alejandro's tone. "But Los Vaqueros like challenges."
"With your mask, you will fit in well here, Ghost" Rudy butted in, I smirk at his statement, well he spoke facts in my opnion.
"Oye Calma" Alejandro gives a soft stern voice ordering Rudy to take it easy. The vehicle slowed down a bit, leaving me a bit curious about what was happening.
"Checkpoint, It's the army. Turn right, well go around."
"Why?" Ghost asked and I questioned myself on assuming the military guys blocking our road were allies or so I thought.
"Some troops are in the pocket of El Sin Nombre. Like I told said he's everywhere."
Rudy picks up the speed as the cleared streets gave the drivers behind us to go faster.
༻︵𓏶︵༺
Upon exiting the SUV, my high-laced boots came into contact with the dry dirt ground. Alejandro had let us to a rustic look old abandoned building it gave off a bad vibe.
"Team leaders, circle up on me." Alejandro ordered through his radion before looking back at Me, Soap and Ghost.
which we three nodded in acknowledgment. the rest of the soldiers rushed out of the vehicles, closing their doors. I grabbed my rifle in my hand and got of the car. as soon as I got off I inhaled the fresh air and felt the breeze cool my skin. I gather around Soap, Ghost, Alejandro and Rudy ready for the mission and the chaos that would unfold.
"Where are they holding Hassan?" Soap asked
"White two-story building. Back town" Alejandro raised the binoculars to give him a good view of the area he then put them down after a couple of seconds he managed a steady grip on his weapon and signaled everyone to quickly to approach the rusted old iron gate door.
In waiting for the command, I positioned behind Soap, who had positioned behind Alejandro. Once everyone was set, he radioed his team.
"All victors, stand by" Alejandro spoke into his radio, keeping his gun ready. Three seconds before commanding his men to breach, he fired a direct shot.
Ghost breached the door open on command, quickly following after Soap who was the first to enter he briskly walked through the entrance. I was left following after ghost.
Once inside the safe house, I was given a better look at the first few two-story houses I saw each made with brick and cement, the structure would be good for an incoming storm.
"Any civilians"
"Gone" Alejandro retorted, quickly approaching the next gate
"Where'd did they go?" Soap questioned after a small moment of silence."
"The Cartel took over, its now a hideout."
"It's a good place to keep Hassan, especially in the middle of nowhere," I said various shouts from the village center interrupted our conversation. We were shut off by another metal door that was lined with large, thick rocks and dense brick walls. Those cartel members who didn't know you were here sure as hell do now
Ghost quickly breached the next door open, allowing The rest of the group to reveal a more covered ground of the village ahead. Gunfire was quick to fill the air along with shouting chaos, Alejandro shot the first cartel member he saw hiding in what looked to be a one-bedroom that was in a complete mess across from him.
As we head down to the first floor of the safe house the walls are quickly riddled with bullet holes from the cartel who shot from various different places for cover.
I lingered behind Soap as he advances ahead, providing additional cover fire toward the cartel. took cover behind the nearest house wall, trying to avoid the gunfire and working with soap, shooting at the cartel men who cockblocked our way.
As we advanced forward, we encountered a narrowed pathway between the houses, which we crossed over the bodies of cartel members.
"watch out!" as I shot at the last man standing on top of a second-story balcony
"Thanks," Alejandro says he shoots me a soft smile which I return with a wink
Following the path to the last house, he pressed forward
"We secure this house, then we go for Hassan," Alejandro makes an announcement, the team members can be seen in his peripheral view.
"Cartels will move fast."
"Then we move faster. Soap, take the door."
Soap positioned himself in front of Alejandro and was set to the right of the door. I heard frantic screams coming from the house, it seemed they were well aware of my presence and were preparing to defend themselves.
after he breached the door, The man walked slowly down the hall and fired heavily at the man standing in the grim center moments after pulling the trigger before soap overtook him.
Following closely behind Soap, I kept an eye out and my gun aimed at every slightly ajar door in the hallway. Bringing pride to my callsign. I shot the cowardly man who tried to hide in the bedroom without hesitation. He was hiding behind a nightstand. The door opened just enough for his line of sight.
"Wow that was quick I'm guessing that's why they Flash" Soap commented in a low hushed tone, making me smirk at soap.
"Not even close, there's more to come." I look to the ghost who just gives me a cold stare which I immediately ignore and just keep on doing me
As Soaps reach the living room he look around trying to see if Hassan has been here or where his trail will lead us.
"All clear no sign of Hassan"
"What happened to the families here" Soap turned his head to see Alejandro entering the living along with me, ghost and Rodolfo following behind.
"The cartels bring violence so they leave." Alejandro approaches a nearby window closest to the door, spotting their objective just a few feet away. I made my way to the second window, peeking outside for anymore cartel members, only to be met with a peaceful view of the mountains and trees it was a truly beautiful day too bad you would spend it chasing down one troubled man.
"Stand by" Before Soap could open the door, Alejandro extended his hand on it and knelt down next to the window to talk into his radio.
"Victor-2, this is 1-1. deploy smoke. were moving external"
As I heard muffled explosions caused by smoke bombs being hurled in front of me, I heard his footsteps against the hard floor nearby. I notice a ghost behind me and I hear him breathing heavily, which doesn't bother me because of the environment we're in.
"Where's your family Alejandro" I asked with curiosity
"I keep that a secret, hermana. To protect them." The last thing we need with this kind of profession is to include the people we care about in this mayhem, thus I respect him for keeping his family and loved ones safe.
'We have concealment" Ghost announced, I enjoy it when guys are taller than me, especially since they have room for me in bed and can just scoop me in one single motion. he was near me, he was practically towering over me compared to my size.
"Let's move" Alejandro rose from the ground
"On me, soap" he nodded
Alejandro took lead, walking out the door to lead ahead through the smoke.
"This is where they were hiding Hassan. Expect resistance"
Alejandro led the group in the direction of the two-story house he had mentioned, which had crisp white walls and a welcoming balcony on the second floor. It was obvious how different it was from the other residences in the village.
A Vaquero opens the door and kicks it down after shooting the doorknob off the frame with his weapon. Alejandro took the initiative once more and threw a grenade, which caused a strong explosion and a brief shower of sparks to  stun enemies from attacking us.
I trailed after him, soap following after me then Ghost and Rudy
then, a second door that was on the opposite side of the living room had been broken through. Alejandro's grenade had surprised the adversaries, who were now stunned on the ground due to the effect of the grenade.
"Clear, no sight of hassan."
"Second deck." Ghost advised instantly
"Si. Vamos. Let's move upstairs and get Hassan"
Alejandro took the lead as Soap and I followed closely behind him, following him up the stairs at a steady, cautious pace. Alejandro manages to lower his head just in time after I heard several booming gunshots strike the wall behind him. He and Soap made it to the top floor, eliminated the last few cartel members, and then let us know it was safe to go inside.
The home's final room was incredibly roomy and appeared more like a living room. The last two cartel members were lying dead in the room, one under a small coffee table and the other through a cheap feathered couch cushion, as evidenced by the gunshot holes in his neck and chest.
"All victors, target building secure. Negative on Hassan." Alejandro announced in his comms, he sounded fed up with this man who we are currently chasing.
Ghost walked over to the sole table that had not been turned into a disorganized mess and started looking through a binder that was lying there. When he opened it, he discovered meaningless documents written in various languages. Hassan was rushing to be transferred out of the building and into a secret place.
"They must've moved him" Alejandro walked up to the table's right side and peered down at whatever the ghost was examining left by Hassan.
"They moved him recently." Alejandro looked at me exhaling in disbelief and disappointment.
"Quds force, that's his flag."The enormous, vivid blue flag with a recognizable yellow insignia was ghost pointed out.
"There's no doubt he was here, he's probably not to far from here, we can probably intersect to where he's heading." Alejandro nodded with you agreeing with my intel and ability to read ahead what were to happen next. Im always ten steps ahead everyone .
"your intel is good flash." as soap patted your soldier and gave a soft smile
Out of nowhere an erreie sound of tires groveling the dirt roads, I turn to the nearest window to try and catch a glimpse of the commotion. Vehicles heading our way.
"Vehicles inbounded" I quickly back up from the window and turn to the wall pretty much alerting the people around me.
"Mireda" Alejandro cursed and hurried over to the other window next to me. Soap followed, Rudy and Ghost joined me by the window. Everyone held their breath as the room fell silent.
"What is it?" Every passing car I saw primarily remind out of my sight from the windows as soap asked swiftly watching the strange vehicles making tight turns before coming to an abrupt hault.
"Its the army." Alejandro didn't sound so happy since they decided to show up out of nowhere.
"We got reinforcements" soap who sounded encouraging by this so sudden news
"Negative" Alejandro ordered his squad commanders and their men to leave. He tightened his grip on his gun to the point that his knuckles turned white, making it evident that he was furious with the army.
"What are we doin?" I watched as Alejandro kept his finger on the trigger
"Covering my men" Alejandro repeated, he peeked out the window from where he stood
"You want us the engage the fucking Mexican army?!?!" soap whispered in disbelief
"No hermano, these troops are paid by the cartel to protect Hassan"
"Multiple vehicle, troops transports light armor." Ghost says as I look through the scope of my rifile looking at the things they were transporting and trying to get more intel on what trick the got up their sleves, A sudden sharp minor explosion is followed by smoke that fogs up there cover
"They're deploying smoke." I peered through my scope, I try to focus my attention to at least the nearest targeted soldier.
"Hold your fire let them get close." alejandro says
As many gunshots can be heard around the the village and they are aimed at us, hell broke loose. I did my best to keep a safe distance from the window as I could hear the sound of the glass breaking and to avoid being fired at.
"Weapons free!!" alejandro shouted
Through my scope, I could see soldiers utilizing metal shields as protection, as if it were going to do any good. I saw that their helmets were of poor quality because even when they raised their shield to defend themselves, my bullets still went straight through their skulls.
Soap tried to cause damage and get rid of the men who were blocking our path while carrying only a little quantity of gernades. I was able to shoot those who had been hurt by the explosions and kill them as they came within my field of vision.
"My men are clear! we need to move!" Alejandro announced abruptly and moved away from the window. "Let's go!-"
He had been cut off from large, bulk grenades that were thrown through the broken glass window, landing against the hardwood floor with a thud. One of them had landed near Soap, he back away instantly . But I moved to him fast, grabbing hold of his forearm to pull him away from the blast. bringing him behind you.
the bombs quickly exploded, almost popping your ears. Black marks stained the wood floored board, murky brown clouds of smoke began to fill the room. I could tell that they used mustard gas to try and lure us out which could have work but we ain't going down without a fight.
"Are you okay?" as I landed on top of soap, he could feel your lower hips meet with his crotch, he blushed madly and nodded due to the explosion it didn't matter what weird position I was in all that matter was he was alive and breathing
He grabbed my arm and pulled me in front of him so we could move away from the ejecting gas canisters as I quickly got off of him and assisted him in standing. The gas was beginning to flood my lungs because it had completely eliminated all oxygen. The smell hit my nose and burned it difficult for me to breathe and causing me to cough.
When the wood panels and glass frames of the back window were broken by Alejandro, Ghost, and Rudy, the murky gas that was supposed to be pure mountain air began to seep out of the new area
"On me hurry !" Alejandro braced his leg against the sill and climbed out of the window, yelling as loudly as he could due to the damage the mustard gas was doing to his lungs. He then fell to the ground
I clutch the ledge and lower myself over it. When I jumped and awkwardly landed against the dirt ground, my gloves shielded my hands from glass splinter fragments.
"Army is right behind us!"
"Down the hill! We'll lose them in the mountains" Alejandro insisted." Fan out and stay close!"
"The old route?" Rudy shouted so that his colonel could hear him over the shooting.
"Straight for the bridge!" He confirmed, quickening his stride as he descended the steep slope. Jumping off a rock ledge, I descended the steep, dry dirt slopes after Alejandro and Rudy, with Soap and Ghost close behind.
The Mexican army follows us as we descend to the foothills, trying to flee while firing at us. A tree a few feet nearby was struck by a rocket as it shot through the air. The hit caused the tree to shake, its blackened, damaged bark aggressively creaking as a result of the harm.
My ear drums are damaged by the impact, and all I can hear is ringing and the painful hammering of my heart in my chest.
" Army on the ridgeline!" I heard someone yell out, an uproar of gunfire breaking through shortly after the blast, the soldiers took high vantage points now carried RPG'S with them. As they got closer and closer to the group.
As I took cover behind a rock , after take a couple of seconds regain my composure I joined in on the fight, Even if was in immense pain after surviving an explosion that could have killed if I would have taken a couple of more steps.
as soon as the final man fell from the ridgelines, "Anyone hit?!" Alejandro yelled.
"Flash, you okay, lass?!" Soap instantly looked at me with worried eyes as he saw blood drain out of my ears due to the RPG that nearly hit me. "Im fine!" I quickly nodded at him assuring him that I was okay and ready to get the fuck out of here.
Alejandro led the way once again, leading down to more steep paths downhill, he then stopped at a large rock ledge, the last tree ending at the corner of a steep cliff, giving a beautiful view of the mountains and the greenery terrain with its blue clear skies it was surrounded by that one miss step could end my journey not that I was afraid of heights, I was better than that.
As the group and I keep on advancing with Alejandro leading us to the bridge, As we run I could see the stunning view of the bridge surrounded by the lakes water it was breathtaking, I really wish I could go swimming as in the moment if I wasn't occupied.
Between Rudy and I, a piercing bullet sliced through the rocks, slamming painfully close to my left shoulder, sending shivers down my spine and nearly knocking me off your feet.
"Flash!" his hand clutched hold onto my forearm, preventing me from falling to my death. I cling to his arm, he guides me back firmly against the wall, helping me regain my mind and balance.
Another bullet pierces missing us, Alejandro shouting and commanding us to keep moving jolts me out of my dissociative state. I am then forced to keep moving until my feet touch more stable ground, at which point my hands tighten their grip on my own gun.
I instantly kneel down, look down where I thought the sniper was, and take a firm look through my scope. I watched for the crucial cue, like the smallest head tilt or a glint of sunlight reflecting off the enemy's scope. anything that would reveal their position.
I shot the sniper once I found him crouched by some tree, using the shrubs as cover to hide in plain sight. That one kill alone gave me redemption It turned the tables around if we were going to make it out of here.
"Good shot, that was amazing" Soap cheered me on as the group and I continued to advance, going up to the next available ledge, where I hauled myself up to continue. Because of all the running and hiking, my legs were on the verge of giving out. My knees and calves were burning and begging for a respite, but the rush of adrenaline coursing through my body compels me to continue.. Part of me wish this would come to end and hoping we catch that bald header fucker.
Upon sliding down another ledge, I regrouped with Alejandro as he froze at another
"you led us to a dead end mate!"
"We have to jump, hold on to your weapons!" Alejandro yelled and threw himself off the cliffside catching me off guard. Ghost and Soap were in total disbelief of what Alejandro did but hey did make the right call beside what other option did he have.
"The lad's gone mad!" Soap who was getting cold feet, I place a hand on his shoulder "You got this Soap! Its this or death." I exhaled slowly bracing myself before taking two steps back, the growing "butterflies" that filled your belly.
I sprang off and felt the wind blowing through my hair and clothes, chilling all the sweat that had accumulated on my face from the continual running and battling. I kept my weapon near to me and safely in my arms. I've never felt so light, and it gave me the impression that I was going to take off. This was the best and most insane thing I have ever done, and if I lived that long, I would definitely do it again.
My entire body felt instantaneously chilled as soon as it made contact with the frigid waves. I breached the lake and was devoured by the floods. When I opened my eyes, the lake's bottomless abyss and the surrounding blue and green crystal pure waters were both visible to me.
It was so peaceful I just wanted to stay there forever.

so…I’ve seen you write something for Hei from Darker than Black, and if it’s not too much trouble I WILL request more of him in the future, there needs to be more DtB content out there.
BUT
I also saw a note about November 11, and I wanted to ask if you might be willing to do something with him with a femme civilian reader? she’s very shy, not very outgoing and not prone to going many places on her own unless she has to go to a store or feels daring enough to go to a café, but wound up affiliated with a contractor and November’s job is initially to just get rid of said contractor, but as he gathers intel he winds up very interested in the reader. at first curiosity, but it blooms into something he just can’t quite put his finger on. meanwhile the reader just sees a very friendly Jack Simon, and falls for him too.
but he has a very icy secret, can he keep it or will he be forced to choose between his profession and what he knows is in his heart?
…also mild Dadvember because he’s very much July’s dad and I will hear nothing to the contrary

__________________________________________________________________________
This whole day was a mistake.
It was supposed to be simple. Go out, get groceries, and then go home. Maybe. Just maybe! You could stop at that cat café you had been dying to try on your way home.
Maybe Al wouldn’t be too upset about smelling other cats.
Who were you kidding? He was always upset when he smelled another animal on your clothes. It was part of what made having the little bobtail so much fun.
You stifle a sneeze and rub at your nose as people mill through the grocery store. There had been a sale on shrimp and vegetables, hence why you ventured out of your apartment in the first place. But it seemed that you were out of luck. You had yet to find said shrimp or even the veggies on sale.
And you were looking forward to eating healthy for once, too!
Oh heavens… You were turning into your mother.
You end up ducking out of the grocery store without having bought anything except for some cat treats and wet food and slowly make your way home to your little dingy one-bedroom apartment.
Only to run straight into the one person you don’t want to talk to the moment you get into your apartment complex. You hear your name from a shrill voice and cringe internally.
“Hello, Mrs. Ellis!” You say cheerily and pour all your fake happiness into your words. You wave ‘happily’ to the old woman outside on the bench near your building. She’s knitting something that looks vaguely like a scarf? She had made you something last year for Christmas, and you had just given it to Al as a plaything because it was so itchy.
Of course, you didn’t tell her.
“How are you doing, dearie? Are you eating well enough?” She asks, and you nod, pointedly ignoring the fact that you still didn’t have groceries for the week. She didn’t need to know too much. She already knew way more than she let on, and you blamed it on your ability to never shut up when you were nervous.
But she didn’t need to know that either.
You make aimless small talk for a few minutes until you are positively dying to go upstairs and see your beloved cat. Al’s probably getting close to yowling at the empty apartment by now, and you can’t afford another noise complaint.
“I really gotta get upstairs, Mrs. Ellis. Al’s waiting for me and all. I need to give him his daily treats, y’know?” You say quickly, and the woman nods happily, curls bouncing, before returning to her knitting.
Your assumption was correct. You could hear Al screeching his lungs out like a child possessed as you made it to the third floor of your apartment building. However, he quiets down when he inevitably hears your keys jingling in the lock. The second the door is open, you can hear his heavy paws on the floor as he tries to get out and see what you have. So, you stick your foot in the crack to stop him, nudging him back with your toes as you squeeze in through the door.
The little (big) bobtail cat chirps, meows, and weaves between your legs as if trying to trip you. He can surely smell the treats in your grocery bag and, despite already being rather hefty, is begging for more.
“I know, I know, I’m coming!” You say to your cat and set the bag on the countertop in the kitchen. Al doesn’t bother trying to jump up; he’s too heavy for that. And while you had tried several times to put him on a diet, it never seemed to stick.
It was clear that Al had you wrapped tightly around his paw.
But it was a routine you enjoyed, and routines were good, so you really didn’t complain too much.
Tumblr media
Your routine was obliterated that next week.
And it all started with a knock on the front door.
You look up from your Nintendo Switch from your parents and frown, pausing your game and heading toward the entrance of your humble abode. Al was hot on your heels, his collar jingling as you opened the front door.
“Mrs. Ellis? How can I help you?” You say hesitantly and yelp as she pushes something into your hands. Your heart sinks as you look at what she has given you.
It’s another scarf.
By the looks of it, it’s the one she was knitting last week. It’s horribly long and rather lopsided, with horrible colors of yellow and green that burn your retinas.
“Just a gift for you, dearie! For always working so hard!” She chirps and abruptly leaves you alone in the doorway.
You look down at your feline companion, who is on his back, batting at the end of the scarf. He trills and chuffs as he plays with the long knitted garment.
“Well, Al… looks like you have a new toy.” You mutter and shut the door.
That evening, you get another knock on the door. You look back up from your Nintendo Switch—you hadn’t moved since you sat down—and grimace. Two people at your door in one day? It could only be your landlord. Maybe you had gotten a noise complaint that you didn’t know about? You glance at your snoozing feline wrapped in his newest toy and shrug.
Hopefully, it wasn’t a burglar or worse. Your landlord. Or even worse than that, Mrs. Ellis with yet another scarf.
It’s none of the above.
You open your front door just a crack and come face to face with a chest. You blink and look up.
Styled blond hair, gray eyes hidden behind sunglasses, dressed in a white suit, purple button-down, and matching tie. He’s handsome, exceptionally so. And looks to be around your age, too. You feel your ears burn and your heart speed up.
Calm down! He was way out of your league anyway!
Besides… You shift your gaze and realize the man isn’t alone. A woman and a child are with him. The woman has dark skin and beautiful golden eyes. She’s dressed in a fuchsia coat with a fur trim. The boy wears a button-down and bow tie with shorts, suspenders, and loafers.
What an… odd group of people…
“Uh… Can I help you?” You hesitate before remembering your manners at the last second. The man dips his head as if tipping an imaginary hat, and his lips quirked into a dashing smile.
“Good evening, ma’am. My name is Jack Simon. Might we come inside?” His accent is incredibly attractive, and you feel your ears burning again.
But… You don’t know any of these people… So you close the door just a smidge. Jack Simon’s smile falters just the tiniest bit.
“Why should I? I don’t even know who you are.” You say, and the woman chuckles,
“She’s got you there.” She turns her attention to you and grins, “My name is April. This is July. We’re here on official business from MI6. We’re hoping to speak to you about a neighbor in your complex?” She says kindly, and you mentally take note of their strange names and open the door a crack.
“Which neighbor? There are like fifty in this building alone.” You say skeptically and narrow your eyes when Jack Simon reaches into the breast pocket of his suit jacket and pulls out a photo.
Is that…?
“It’s been some time since this picture was taken, but do you know—”
“That’s Mrs. Ellis.” You blurt, effectively cutting him off as you look at a photo of your much older-looking neighbor. The picture looked like it was taken about sixty years ago when she was in her mid-teens. But the slope of her nose was the same, as was the shape of her eyes.
Jack raises an eyebrow.
“Does she have a first name?” At this, you shrugged and bent down to pick up Al, who had woken from his nap and was currently trying to escape. April lets out a quiet gasp of glee and lets go of July’s hand.
“Oh, look at the cute kitty! Might I ask their name?” She asks and extends her hand to let Al sniff. A deep rumbling purr is heard as she scratches under his chin. You let out a tight laugh.
He’s getting heavy.
“His name is Al Pawcino. He’s an eight-year-old bobtail and incredibly overweight, but we’re trying to work on that.” You say quickly, and she lets out a loud laugh.
“Al Pawcino! You’re kidding!” Jack tries to step in, but you are emboldened by the interest in your feline friend.
“Al Pacino was my dad’s favorite actor.” You say, and even July steps forward to pet Al. His eyes creep you out a bit. They’re blank and empty like that of a doll.
“If we could get back on track, please,” Jack says, exasperated, and you nod.
“I don’t know her first name. I'm pretty sure she doesn’t know mine, either. She lives… actually, I don’t know where she lives in this complex. She mainly sits downstairs and knits.” You reply and shift Al in your arms.
You were starting to babble again.
Jack raises an eyebrow.
“Knits?” You frowned and nodded again, setting Al down and retrieving the new scarf on the hook by your door. Al tries to escape, so you nudge him back with your foot and step outside so you can shut the door behind you.
“Sure, all the time. Here, I’ll show you, they’re kind of bad, though. Al plays with the other one.” You say and hand him the horrendous article of clothing.
The man studies the knitted fabric and then to you.
“Do you know why she gave this to you?” He asks, and you shrug,
“She said she gave me this one because “I’ve been working so hard.”” You reply, and he hums before folding up the ‘scarf’ and tucking it into his trouser pocket.
It bulges awkwardly, but you don’t have the heart to tell him as you just let out an indignant cry,
“Hey! What are you doing?!” He looks pointedly over his sunglasses (who even wears sunglasses at night?), and your mouth snaps shut.
“We have reason to believe that she is not who she says she is. This scarf is evidence.” He says curtly, and just like that, the odd little trio left you alone outside your apartment.
You watch them leave, and when they descend the stairs, you turn and go to open the front door.
Only to find that it’s locked.
“Oh, you have got to be kidding me.”
Tumblr media
The next time you see the mysterious Jack Simon is just the following week. He doesn’t have April with him, which is odd. Even with your brief first encounter, you had the feeling they were always around each other.
One hand is occupied with his cell phone, which is pressed to his ear. The other holds July’s hand. The doll-like boy simply stands there on the street corner with Jack and watches the world pass by.
You gulp down the last of your coffee at the café and head out, having already paid for your drink.
What are you doing?
Surely you aren’t—
“Mr. Simon! July!” You find yourself saying, and they both turn to look at you, almost in unison. You offer a friendly smile that you hope doesn’t look too awkward and come to a stop before them. Jack says a quick goodbye and ends his call, smiling that same dashing smile as before.
Again, you can feel your heart speed up.
He says your name, and you duck your head in greeting.
“It’s a pleasure to see you again.” He says, and you fall in stride beside him and his… friend? Son? Acquaintance?
“Likewise, can I ask how your investigation is going?” You ask, and he pulls down his sunglasses to wink,
“That is confidential information, ma’am.” He quips, and you roll your eyes.
“I’m part of the investigation, right? Surely I can be told something.” You ask, unsure of where this excitement about the investigation into Mrs. Ellis is coming from. She was a bit obnoxious even though she meant well. But Al didn’t like her, so by proxy, you didn’t either. So, by all means, you shouldn’t have cared about what happened to her.
But there was something about this mysterious Jack Simon man that wanted you to keep him talking. He had a voice as smooth as silk that made tingles go from the tips of your ears down to your toes.
Said man sighed, looked both ways, and as the light signifies that you could walk, the three of you started crossing the street.
“I suppose you can know a little…” He muses and smiles as you give a quiet cheer. “But not here. We need to be away from prying eyes.” He continued quickly, and you blinked several times in confusion.
Just what was he about to tell you?!
Tumblr media
The car you’re in has blackened windows and heated leather seats. The driver is separated by glass and keeps his eyes on the road. Save for the size, this seems more like a limo than anything.
“Might I offer you a sparkling water?” Jack says and you lurch awkwardly as you get buckled.
“Uh… No thanks… I’m not the biggest fan of fizz.” You say, and Jack shrugs, taking one for himself before closing the center console that held the drinks. He raps on the glass separating you and the driver, and the car rumbles into motion.
“Now… What to tell you about the case?” Jack mutters to himself. You glance at him from where you had been looking out the window. He sat across from you, with July at his side. The little boy was watching you, hands folded neatly in his lap.
He kind of gave you the creeps… He was so… doll-like…
“What do you know about Contractors?” Jack says abruptly, and you startle slightly. Then you frown.
“What like construction contractors?” You reply, and he shakes his head.
“I mean the ones that appeared when Hell and Heaven’s Gate appeared ten years ago.”
A shiver ran down your spine at that.
You had heard whispers. People talking in hushed voices over coffee about speculations about people with supernatural powers. About Dolls with no emotions who could see you through their medium.
Wait a minute…
Your eyes narrow at Jack Simon and his mysterious child acquaintance, July.
“Are you a Contractor?” You ask hesitantly, and his eyebrows shoot up.
“What makes you say that?” He asks, but his tone has changed. Something icy cold, like frost glazing over a window and dropping the temperature. You can’t help but shudder.
“Your vibes. And July, too. I’ve heard about Dolls, and it makes sense that he’d be one of them.” You say, and Jack Simon stares blankly for a moment.
Then he begins to laugh.
A deep body-shaking laugh that has him covering his mouth. You feel your face heat up.
Eventually, Jack gets his emotions under control and takes a deep breath.
“You’ve got me. July is a Doll. I’m a Contractor. April is as well.” He says, and you freeze.
“But I thought Contractors worked for the black market? You said you worked for the United Kingdom and MI6!” You blurt, and he nods his head to the side,
“Not all Contractors work for the black market. Many work for corporations like PANDORA or secret services like MI6.” He explains, and you hum.
“So you’re like a super secret spy?” You say, almost teasing, and he chuckles at that, making your heart stutter for the umpteenth time that day.
You like the sound of his laugh.
It is then that you remember why you’re in the darkened car in the first place and snap your fingers.
“Mrs. Ellis! Why are you investigating her, and what does she have to do with Contractors?” You say, and Jack grins,
“Why, she’s a Contractor herself.”
You choke on your saliva and erupt into a coughing fit.
“She’s a what?!” You gasp as soon as your hacking subsides. Jack shrugs, adjusting his violet tie.
“MI6 has reason to believe she’s a part of an enemy organization. We don’t know her power, only that she’s encoding messages in her knitting.” A jolt runs through you.
Her knitting?
“But why give it to me?” You ask, almost scared of the answer. Jack glances out the window as buildings pass briefly before looking back to you.
“To hide her messages? Who knows. But—”
A phone goes off, playing a jaunty little tune, and he whips out his cellular device.
“Talk to me.” He says, and you hear someone female speaking on the other end. Maybe April? She chatters on momentarily, with Jack humming to show he was listening. But it isn’t long before he hangs up and looks at you seriously. All traces of his sense of humor were gone.
“It seems someone has broken into your apartment.”
Tumblr media
Your apartment had been ransacked.
The dining table was overturned, and the chairs were pushed up against the wall. Your bedroom had been ripped apart, and drawers from your dresser were thrown about. Hell, they had even gutted your mattress!
Al squeezed himself out from under your bedframe the second he heard your voice. He came yowling down the hall and cannonballed into your legs, causing you to stumble back against the ever-so-sturdy Jack Simon. He holds July’s hand as you scoop up Al and make your way into your abode in a daze.
The remaining scarf is gone.
As is your Nintendo Switch.
And your journal.
And probably something else, but you don’t care to check. How had no one heard the noise? The walls were thin enough that the floorboards creaking could be heard next door.
April is already there as well. She looks at you sympathetically, pulling you into a one-sided hug.
“Don’t worry, love. We’ll find out who did this.” She says, and you snort.
“It was Mrs. Ellis’s “enemy organization” wasn’t it?” You mumble, and April looks at Jack sharply.
“Just how much did you tell her?” She inquired, and Jack shrugs,
“She’s very persuasive.” That is all he says.
July approaches you as Jack steps out to make a call, and you sink onto your gutted couch with Al still in your arms. Tears start to burn your eyelids, and you bury your face in Al’s fur as July begins to pet his head.
“What do I do now? I can’t stay here, can I?” You mumble to April, who has taken a seat across from you, dragging one of the chairs over to sit down and cross one leg over the other.
“Most likely not. That’s what Jack is calling about. We can house you at an MI6 safehouse in the area.” She said, and you nodded with a sniffle.
At least you have that going for you. Jack comes back into your apartment and surveys the room.
“The car is still waiting outside. Pack a bag.” He says, and it spurs you into action.
You hand off Al to July, whose expression doesn’t change but seems happy to hold the overweight cat nonetheless. Then, you head to your destroyed bedroom and track down a duffel bag you had purchased when you swore you were going to start going to the gym.
Ha, that didn’t last long.
Clothes are stuffed in the bag, and you also pack some of Al’s toys and treats and pull out an unopened bag of food. It should last you a month or so. After all, you aren’t sure how long you’d be staying at this supposed safehouse.
Al is corralled into his carrier and then, you are all loaded into the car and off to the next destination.
Tumblr media
Weeks pass.
The safehouse is secure, and Al acclimates easily enough. He happily thunders through the halls after jingle balls that July tosses for him. However, you don’t acclimate as quickly.
You’re left with nightmares of people breaking in to murder you, and the tiny little safehouse does nothing to quell your fears. It’s all cement walls and cold floors. Your room is barely big enough for a twin-size bed and a dresser. There’s a crack in the window that lets in the frigid air at night, and the dining table is barely big enough for the four of you.
Not that the four of you eat together or something. Both Contractors and July are rarely home. Well… that isn’t entirely true. Usually, April is home with you while Jack Simon is out doing who knows what with the Doll.
April wouldn’t tell you what they were doing. She just said it was ‘reconnaissance’.
But things change three weeks into your little hiding stint.
You look up from the book April had lent you as Jack and July come in through the front door. July looks as bored as ever but makes a beeline for Al, who perks up at the sight of his friend. Jack, however, seems stressed. He holds an envelope in his hand, running his other hand through his hair and mussing it up.
It looks… really good like that.
“Any news?” April asks, and Jack simply tosses the envelope and collapses onto the sofa next to you, kicking his feet up in what seems like relief. His head leaned back, and you quickly looked back at your book before he could catch you staring.
“Read the envelope.” He grunted, exhaustion thick in his voice. April shrugs and opens the envelope.
You set your book down in interest as her eyebrows shoot up, and she looks vaguely alarmed. Well, as alarmed as a Contractor can look, you suppose.
“Is this real?” She asks, and Jack lolls his head to the side to look at his companion.
“Took it right out of Ellis’s mailbox. So, unless they planted it—which there might be a chance of that—it’s real.” He said, and you held out a hesitant hand.
“Can I see?” You ask, and April hands you the envelope and contents.
You stare blankly at the glossy piece of parchment. It’s an… invitation? The paper is shiny and black, with neat writing in gold lettering. There’s a time, a place, and Mrs. Ellis’s name—which her first name is apparently Ava—all embossed on the front.
It looked ridiculously expensive.
“And this is important… Why?” You ask, confused and more than a little worried. Jack finally sits up and plants his feet on the floor,
“It’s a gala. And Ellis is likely to be there. But there’s an issue. And that’s because this organization—and Ellis by proxy—already knows April’s face, which is why she’s been here with you.” He said, rubbing a hand down his face. It was as if a lightbulb went off in your mind,
“So you don’t have a partner to get inside, do you?” You say, and Jack nods an affirmative. April pipes up then,
“She could go with you.” She says and gestures to you. You blink dumbly before it registers just what she has said.
Go with Jack Simon to a gala?
“Absolutely not!” You and Jack say in unison, and it would’ve been funny had you not panicked at the idea. Though you are panicked likely for a different reason than Jack. April throws her hands up,
“She’s perfect! No one at this organization knows her face!” She tries, and you are already shaking your head.
“Mrs. Ellis knows my face! Won’t she be there?” You say, and April visibly pauses before her shoulders slump.
Jack, however, seems to be considering the idea despite the outburst. You jab a finger at him in your panic,
“Absolutely not!”
Tumblr media
“I can’t believe you talked me into this.” You grumble, fussing with the strands of hair hanging by your ears. The rest of your hair has been swept up into an elegant chignon at the back of your head. Jack reaches over and moves your hands away from your face.
“Stop touching it. You look stunning.” He says, and you have to turn your head to hide your embarrassment.
He looks handsome, almost excessively so. Dressed in a pitch-black suit with a plum tie and matching pocket square, he might as well have been a statue at a museum for people to ogle at. You were dressed in a matching plum dress with a low back and cascaded to the floor of the car. The windows were tinted black as always, and you were pretty sure it was the same driver chauffeuring you everywhere.
The two of you looked for all the world like a couple.
“Have you arrived yet?” April’s voice crackles to life in your left ear, and it takes all your power not to flinch. She’s just outside the gala event with July, keeping an eye with the Doll’s spectre and the earpiece hidden masterfully in your ear. Jack wasn’t able to have one on account of his shorter hair, so it was up to you to relay any information he or she told you.
“Not yet. Almost.” You said it, and it was then that the vehicle rolled to a stop. You looked out the window to see couples walking into a large building where the gala was supposedly held.
You suddenly felt very underdressed despite your extravagant gown.
Jack got out of the car first and extended a hand to you, which you took. His hands were smooth and cold as they always seemed to be. But he was strong and steady as a rock as you stood and settled your hand on his arm. He leaned down until his lips brushed your ear,
“Smile, darling, we’re on camera.” He whispered, and you shivered.
Did he know the effect he had on you?
He had to. You were rubbish at hiding it. Hell, even April had picked up on it and teased you about your little (ginormous) crush when doing your hair.
The two of you make it to the doorman, who accepts your (fake) invitation without any issues, and you are allowed inside.
It’s very quickly that you have to refrain from gasping at the sheer size and magnificence of the interior. There’s a massive crystal chandelier in the center of the ceiling, surrounded by murals of angels and demons and everything in between. Couples are already mingling and dancing on the dance floor, and a small string orchestra is set up in the corner, playing soft music. There are tables with white tablecloths set up around the dance floor where more couples and potential donors are chatting.
Jack leads you to the dancefloor,
“Shall we dance?” He asks, and you can’t bring yourself to say no.
But it isn’t long until you realize you are very out of your comfort zone. You step on Jack’s feet at least twice before he speaks to you again,
“Keep your eyes on me. Let me lead. There’s a good girl.” He murmurs, and you nod, keeping your eyes up and focused on his face. He offers you a charming grin that has your heart thundering in your chest.
“The target has been spotted. She’s on the second floor.” Comes July’s voice in your ear,
That was quick.
You start gently steering Jack toward the spiral staircase leading up to the second floor.
“July found Mrs. Ellis. She’s on the second floor.” You whisper to your dance partner, and he nods without a word, effortlessly taking the reigns of the dance until you leave the floor and make a subtle beeline for the staircase. But of course, you have to make it look natural, so you stop and socialize when the situation calls for it.
“She’s headed toward the server room,” July says again. So, you relay that information to Jack, who takes the initiative and seems to know where he’s going. Or, at the very least, he’s walking with the confidence to make people believe he knows where he’s going.
The server room is the third door on the right after rounding a corner in the maze of hallways. Your heels are thankfully muffled by the carpet, but you also have to keep a hand on Jack’s arm to keep from toppling over.
“Why did April talk me into these death traps.” You mutter under your breath and hear Jack let out a breathy laugh,
“If it’s any consolation, you look lovely.” He replies, and you roll your eyes to hide how your heart has leaped into your throat.
“So you’ve said.”
Mrs. Ellis is hunched over a computer, typing at blinding speeds for a seventy-something-year-old woman. She’s dressed in a turtleneck gown with long sleeves and a thumb drive stuck into one of the servers, which looks very expensive.
“I thought you’d have more tact than immediately heading to the server room,” Jack quipped from the entrance, and both you and Mrs. Ellis jumped.
Why was he talking now?! Shouldn’t you have snuck up on her?!
“I danced with a few strapping young gentlemen!” She defended herself without turning and pressed a button. All the lights go out, and you can hear screams of surprise from downstairs. Mrs. Ellis turns and begins to glow blue.
So she was a Contractor…
What was her power? Her arm shoots to an impossibly long length and wraps around your throat, dragging you across the floor until she has you in a chokehold against her torso. Her other arm snatches the thumb drive and stuffs it down the front of her dress for safekeeping.
“Elasticity. Now, that’s a Contract you don’t see every day.” Jack says, but you’ve spent enough time with him to hear the tightness in his voice.
He’s worried about you.
He takes a step closer, and Mrs. Ellis’s arm tightens around your throat until you gasp for air.
“Any closer, and I snap her neck.” Mrs. Ellis snarls, and Jack stops. You can see the lines around his eyes, illuminated by the lights of the blinking servers.
Then… He starts to glow… That pale blue glow with red glowing eyes that you now associated with all Contractors.
Right… You forgot he was a Contractor, too.
It seemed that Mrs. Ellis was not privy to this information because she backed up a bit, and you could hear the panic in her voice when she spoke next. He begins to walk forward and she is too panicked to follow through on her threat.
“Wait—Who are you?! Not the CIA?!” Jack grinned, and you cringed.
It looked so… sinister…
“Darling, I’m November 11 from MI6.” He said proudly, and by then, he was in front of you, grabbing ahold of her coiled arm around your neck. You watch as the skin darkens and frost creeps over the palm and fingers.
It’s getting cold.
Freezing even.
Soon, you hear a wheezing, rattling gasp behind you, and Mrs. Ellis literally shatters into frozen pieces.
Well, that didn’t take long.
You all but collapse with a choked inhale into Jack Simon’s—or is it November 11?—arms.
“Are you alright, love?” He asked, and you shook your head.
“I could’ve died. What do you think?” You snap, instantly feeling bad but also not caring.
He put you in danger.
You.
A civilian.
A regular human.
Someone who had a pet waiting for them at home.
Jack sighed, pulled you upright by wrapping a cold arm around your shoulders, and together, you started walking toward the server room exit. However, instead of bringing you back to the car, he took you to one of the balconies that dot the exterior of the second floor. You lean on the stone railing and rub at your still-tender throat. A cold breeze sweeps through the gardens, and you begin to tremble and cry.
You could have died.
What would’ve happened to Al had you actually died? Would he be given to the shelter? He wouldn’t be adopted. No one would want an overweight bobtail cat who was getting older and was as cantankerous as they came.
A suit jacket was draped over your shoulders, and you look over to see Jack, a lit cigarette between his lips and a sad sort of look on his face.
“I’m sorry.” He says around the cigarette, and you shrug,
“I agreed to this.” You reply, and he shakes his head,
“We more or less coerced you into it. And for that I’m sorry.” He says, and you give a watery laugh,
“Well then, I accept your apology. Thank you.”
Tumblr media
The mission is wrapped up without any further issues. Jack, April, and July are summoned back to MI6 headquarters.  You were gifted a brand new apartment with a few months off rent as a thanks for your contributions and an apology for the danger you were put in.
Part of you wonders if it’s Jack’s doing. You had a feeling that MI6 wasn’t usually this generous.
Either way, you weren’t complaining.
The trio is kind enough to help you move what’s left of your old apartment out of storage and into the new place. July isn’t much help, but he keeps Al occupied, and that’s all you could ask for.
“Will you be alright?” April asks as you heft the last box onto your newly assembled dining table. You turn and smile at her,
“I’ll be fine. Tell your boss thank you for all of this.” You say, and she cackles,
“You have Jack to thank for all of this. It was his idea.” She replies, and you blink.
So you were right!
Jack peeks his head out of the new guest bedroom where he had been building a bed frame.
“Are you telling her all of my secrets?” He teases, and April sticks her tongue out,
“Only because we love you!” She chirps, and you choke on the water in your mouth.
Love huh?
You actually liked the sound of that.
April decides to track down Al and July, leaving you alone with Jack. You meander your way into the guest bedroom, where Jack is lifting the mattress onto the box spring on the bed frame.
“And done!” He says, wiping the sweat off his brow and turning to see you. You grin at him and reach forward boldly to squeeze his hand.
“Thank you. For everything, I mean. Keeping me safe. All of it.” You say, and he dips his head in what you like to imagine is embarrassment.
“Don’t mention it.” He replies and squeezes your hand back.
The room is silent after that, but you don’t let go, and neither does he.
At least… Until…
“I should really get going. We received another mission this morning, and our flight will leave soon.” He says and your smile drops into a sad sort of quirk of your lips.
“Keep in touch, yeah? Come visit when you’re in the area.” You try, and he huffed a laugh.
“Of course.” He says and lets go of your hand.
You hold Al as Jack Simon, July, and April get into the darkened car on the street. Jack paused before he got in, turned to look up where you were standing, and waved. You waved back as best you could with Al in your arms and smiled until they were out of sight. Then, with a sigh, you head back inside to get Al some dinner.
You only wished you knew you’d never see them again.

Hey, I'm messaging random people out of desperation, so please forgive me if this is annoying- my partner is looking for a remote job while studying for his CompTIA A+ cert, and hasn't been able to find anything. We've hit a wall as far as where to look (LinkedIn, Indeed, etc. are filled with scams and useless) and I'm reaching out to whoever I can think of/feel called to ask, to see if they have any ideas/directions to point us in. Thank you for your time, and I hope you have a good night
Shit this is really hard because I usually gotta ask follow up questions before giving specified advice.
But I'm a misogyny experiencing person in the tech fields. So I'll try.
First of all. Is your partner a person that experiences misogyny or a person of color? (I use "person that experiences misogyny because trans-men or enbies that are AFAB that don't medically transition can experience sexism in the field.)
Another trait I have that I say "gives me experience in the struggles of the field" is I've been unemployed for over a year twice. (Not by choice).
Gaps in your resume, anything in your resume that can indicate you're a person that experiences misogyny, or anything that can give away that you're a person of color will make it harder for your partner.
You can apply to large companies if you want, but don't get your hopes up. Large companies get thousands of applicants and rely on AI to filter resumes. Unfortunately AI is racist and sexist. Because it was trained by people with an unconscious bias. Small companies around 100 employees is literally how I keep finding my jobs.
Go to career fairs. My resume wasn't that great, but I knew I was smart enough to get the job if I could get them to just meet me. Which sucked because I never got an interview. One employer met me, and I guess I said something right because he put a big ole star on my resume and I was put on top of the applicants list.
Use Christian resources. "But fae. I'm not Christian." Yeah. It was really fucking weird for a long time to constantly be told like "I'm so glad we're if the same beliefs. This is a Christian company." But like... companies that want to keep is "in-house" so to speak will only send job descriptions to Christian resources. And honestly I've seen near no competition at these places for jobs.
I'm not saying lie or exaggerate on your resume. I'm saying floof on your resume. Instead of "developed the website". Maybe think "Hey. I realize I was the primary person working on the website, and the person everyone went to for help." BAM. Put "lead web developer" on the job description (not job title).
Look at the type of job the description is asking for. If they're a company that contracts their employees time. You want to focus your job description on how much time you saved and money you made fit the company. If they build products. You want to focus on your skill sets.
POST YOUR RESUME EVERYWHERE. Put it up on indeed. LinkedIn. Monster. Everywhere. Check the box that says you're looking for a job. Make it visible. Many companies don't want to go through the hiring process and will pay a contractor to do the work. Those jobs won't be posted. The contractor will be searching resumes on these sites and making calls.
Have a job already. It makes you look desirable to employers.
If you have gaps in your resume. Pencil it in. You weren't unemployed during that year you were studying for your certification.
Your resume should only be 1 page (longer if you have work experience but no more than 2 pages) and the first third of the first page should have the most important info. A quick blurb about you. Your skills/certifications. Your work experience. If you don't catch their attention by then, your resume will go on the trash.
I see a lot of people put irrelevant information on their resume. You don't want gaps in your resume but they don't need to know about that baby sitter job when you were 16. They don't need to know that you also made the coffee in that job as a web developer. Don't include information that you can't relate to the job.
It never worked out for me but a lot of people suggest using those sites that scan your resume against the job description and it's honestly worth a shot.
Don't let anyone throw a thesaurus at you when they offer to help with your resume. If you have people that help by thesaurusing your words, don't listen to them. Hiring managers and recruiters see through that shit.
It's honestly been a hot minute, so I'm probably forgetting stuff, but I do hope this helps!

Not Exactly Out of Office
In the last 4 years of doing social media full time, we haven’t once taken a vacation and completely unplugged.
There have been so many times when I want to put our out of office email on (to be honest, we don’t even have one and wouldn’t know how to create one at this point) and just be present in the moment, soaking up the beach and precious family time. But we’ve never done it. Why is that?
As a content creator, is there a time to ever truly unplug when everything is potential content? I think for me, there’s always a small fear that I might miss out on an opportunity if I completely turn everything off. An important email might come through that is time sensitive, or what if I miss the chance to post something that catches people’s eyes? When posting about your life is your job, there is always an opportunity.
These are the irrational thoughts that come to me when we take vacations. In reality, I know our manager can handle any email we might not get to, and I know that posting on social media can always wait for another day, no matter what frantic thought flies through my mind in the moment. Nothing is so important that it can’t wait.
But alas, this just wasn’t our week yet.
I don’t know if I would even call this beach trip a vacation per se. We drove down because the kids are on fall break, so it’s definitely a vacation for them, but I’ve been on my laptop every day editing and responding to the regular batch of never ending emails (which, make no mistake: I’m extremely grateful for!! I love being busy and all the aspects of running a small business), so in a way, this is business as usual for PJ and I. He’s been working on the beach cottage lining up contractors to work on it in the coming months so we can get it finished.
We are hoping to take an actual vacation this fall, so who knows what will happen then?
And while our out of office didn’t get turned on this trip, I’m determined to make it happen in the near future. I’m talking no emails, no social media, maybe even no phone.
Maybe.
