#233: What's the Deadline?

Recently, I re-read one of Tim Urban's most popular posts on Wait But Why? — Your Life in Weeks. It has a simple but powerful premise that is obvious and, at the same time, very difficult to grasp for most people.

Tim created a grid that visualises every single week of your life from the age of 0 up to 90. It's a grid like any other, except it can fit every single week that most of us will enjoy on this planet. Of course, we're all aware that life isn't forever. But seeing it laid out like that on a screen in front of you is still pretty shocking.

Time in Perspective

Time is normally something that flows past us no matter what we do. Most people don't zoom out and think about the inevitable end — the ultimate deadline.

Doing that helps put things in perspective. In the same way, thinking about how a story ends will help you figure out where to start it.

People have been doing it for thousands of years through memento mori. However, you don't have to be thinking about death all the time to get the benefits.

Artificial Deadlines

Some writers hate them; others swear by them. Regardless of where you stand, deadlines reflect the simple reality of life that you don't have infinite time. A deadline creates a similar form of urgency as you might have felt looking at Tim's grid of your life, albeit on a smaller scale.

Setting a realistic deadline and trying to achieve it can transform your writing life.

Deadlines Big and Small

Setting a deadline for your upcoming novel or another big writing project is great. But smaller deadlines work just as well or even better.

I've had some of my best writing sessions when I had to do something immediately afterwards. I have trouble focusing my mind when I have four hours to "work on my WIP." However, when I have an hour to write 500 words before meeting a friend, that creates the urgency that I need.

A Sense the Urgency

Two separate things are true at the same time:

There's plenty of time.

It's running out way faster than we realise.

No matter how old you are, don't panic. In all likelihood, you have enough time to figure things out. Having a sense of urgency will help you to use that time effectively.

Time will pass. Things will change. You may be able to get things done in the future, but at some point, there won't be enough future left.

Sara Morris - Evergreen.

Sara collaborated with set designer / stylist Sandy Suffield to create this quirky new series 'Evergreen'. The series plays with perceptions of scale. We get a sense of the size of the objects in this shoot from the glass vases and curtains – but the title Evergreen suggests the viewer should take a closer look. The ‘plants’ are actually not plants at all but common green household objects. They reveal the true size of the set, the collection includes rubber bands, food bag ties and electrical wire.
