A significant distinction that everyone should be aware of:

Calling the Ring “my precious” is a level of control/possession/corruption all its own. When a Ring-bearer calls it that, that’s when you know it has an unbreakable hold on the bearer.

Isildur says “it is precious to me,” which is pretty much equivalent.

Smeagol/Gollum refers to the Ring as “my precious” countless times.

Bilbo refers to the Ring as “my precious” in the book’s first chapter/the first few minutes of the film. Even though he manages to give it up, he still isn’t fully free from it, continuing to want to see it/touch it “one more time.”

Frodo, who literally carries the Ring around his neck for 6 months straight all the way into the Cracks of Doom where it’s most powerful, NEVER refers to the Ring as “my precious.” EVER. Even when it finally conquers his will in the end, he only says it’s “mine.” Not “my precious.”

Frodo and Sam both call it “the precious” when talking to Gollum, because that’s what Gollum calls it (I doubt Gollum even knows the word ‘Ring’), and they want to ensure Gollum knows what they’re talking about.

But not once, in a 1000+ page book or an 11-hour film trilogy, does Frodo ever call the Ring “MY precious” or claim that “it is precious to ME.” Even when the Ring wears him down enough to prevent him from dropping it into the Fire, it still can’t gain enough control over him to make him say those particular fatal words.

Rough WIPs from a small LOTR lyric comic that I may or may not finish — the comic (I hope) is heavily focused on the relationships between deagol & smeagol -> bilbo & frodo -> frodo & sam and revolving around the Ring (and how it connects them all together, how their relationships with it and eachother differ, etc). It'll be kind of angsty, sort of bittersweet, maybe a little cringe (but I am free).

I started it in the spur of the moment after hearing the song I want this to go to and was like "ooo, yay, nature!!" and then quickly realized that I'm very out of practice with drawing people and it's gonna be much harder than I thought it would be,, especially because my original idea involves SO many hands,,,, but it's fine. I think. It'll be fine. I truly do want to finish it though. I just wanted to get some of what I already have out there in case I change my mind (hoping maybe if people are interested I'll be peer-pressured intp finishing it... we'll see). Vaccination is a nice analogy and I do advocate for it but for this case in particular I'm leaning towards it being more an animal learning exercise. Like I'm imposing a slow process of habituation i.e. the reduction and then lack of response (flinching and disgust) to stimulus (gollum posting) through repeated exposure to the stimulus (learning to implicitly ignore or "filter" the sensory input because its registered as unimportant to your survival).

The "Dear Enemy" hypothesis by Temeles (1994) predicts that individuals will show reduced aggressive interactions with neighbours (mutuals), compared to strangers (non-mutuals). The mechanism for this reduction in aggression is habituation as non-mutuals present a threat (don't know what kind of weird shit they're going to put on your dash), while a mutual doesn't as you are already familiar with their territory (you already know what kind of weird shit they're going to put on your dash).

Habituation functions at the level of the receptor or within the central nervous system and it can be reversed after a stimulus-free interval or through new experiences, so occassional gollum bombs are necessary for reducing smeagol shudder events. I, for example, am practically immune to gollum's mossy cleft, second ring, fishy muff, etc. due to repeated exposure.

This imposes a fitness advantage as it allows the animal (you) to focus attention and energy on more important aspects of the environment (e.g. continuing to scroll unimpeded by smeagol mpreg art), ignoring background "noise" (e.g. gollum pounding in the breeding halls), and avoiding disruption (e.g. gollum saggy pierced naturals) to behaviour.

Recognising false positives (something that is not dangerous; e.g. people rping yoda and gollum sucking eachother off before being crushed by a steamroller in the replies of your post) is an economy response and therefore energy saving.
