lonely hearts club

veterans. modern au. 1176 words.

“To the Lonely Hearts Club,” Gunther says for the tenth time that night. He raises his glass of beer and his friends clink theirs against his before they all take a large swig, easily swallowing down half their mugs. It seems the more they drink, the easier the alcohol goes down.  

“Lonely Hearts Club!” Keiji says belated and letting out a huge belch that makes his companions cackle. Keiji scowls at them and then downs the rest of his beer. He slumps against his seat and pushes his empty mug forward. “Hey, order another round, will you?”  

“Which one’s this one?” Oluo asks, squinting at the empty mug as if a number will appear to answer his question. His mouth is pulled into a deep frown as he tries to concentrate. Oluo holds up a hand and begins to count. “One ... two ... three ... five ... four ... three ...”  

“You needa count down from ten. Countdown,” Abel hiccups. He’s slumped on the couch of the karaoke room, one finger pointed up at nothing in particular. “Ten, nine, eight...”  

Oluo and Abel begin to count down together, their voices overlapping. When Oluo raises his voice to be heard over Abel, Abel begins to speak louder as well. Soon, they stop counting down and begin an impromptu contest of speaking over each other, shouting the number “three” at the top of their lungs until their faces are bright red.  

“I thought we drank more than three,” Keiji mumbles, swaying until he falls over on his side. He flops against the arm of the couch like a dead fish, a loud groan escaping his lips. His outburst only causes Abel and Oluo to shriek, “Three!’ even louder. 

Mitabi is swaying in front of the karaoke screen, tears streaming down his face as he sings James Blunt’s “You’re Beautiful”. He had started the night as a decent singer, but his sense of pitch has deteriorated with each drink he downs. Now, he sounds like a dying racoon as he sings about a passing love on a subway for the tenth time this night.  

“Can we sing ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ yet?” Keiji asks, eyes closed but his head turned towards Mitabi. 

Mitabi holds a finger up to his lips and shakes his head. His lips are pressed against the microphone as he mumbles in reply, “No. Love songs only.” 

“It’s a love song,” Keiji protests, his voice muffled against the fabric of the couch. “I love the song. It’s a song that I love, so it’s a love song.”  

“Loveless flawless,” Auruo says, nodding in agreement even as he grows increasingly incoherent as the night passes. He throws an arm around Keiji’s neck and shouts, “Bohemian Rhapsody!” 

“Bohemian Rhapsody!” Abel echos. He jumps up and throws his hands up in the air but loses his balance and falls to the floor like a domino. His cheek pressed against the cold hardwood, Abel cries out weakly, “Bohemian Rhapsody...” 

Gunther is currently counting all the members of their group on his fingers. He keeps miscounting and has to recount four or five times before he realizes something is wrong. “Someone’s not here. Who’s not here?” Gunther asks, yelling so that he can be heard above Mitabi’s off-key singing.  

“Did you remember to count yourself?” Abel mumbles into the floor.  

“Ye-es?” Gunther says. He recounts everyone just in case he had gotten the number wrong but he comes up with the same number as he had before. “Who are we missing?” 

“Abel,” Oluo says. He yelps when Abel chucks his shoe at him. 

“I’m right here, idiot,” Abel grumbles before collapsing back on the floor.  

Gunther’s counting everyone up again to find the missing member while the rest of his friends bicker. It’s difficult for him to concentrate with the alcohol flowing in his veins and Mitabi’s awful singing in the background, but he finally realizes who has been missing this entire night.  

“Where’s Gelgar?” Gunther asks. Had they left Gelgar behind at the bar? He can’t believe they had forgotten him in the first place. Gelgar is such an essential member of their squad. Who else will harmonize poorly with Mitabi as he sings “You’re Beautiful” until the end of the night? Who else is going to throw up into the gutter as soon as they stumble out of the karaoke place at 2 AM? Who else is going to cry the entire time as the cab driver rolls their eyes?  

“Gelgar’s with Lynne. They’re going on a date tonight,” Abel replies. He rolls over on the floor but the 360 degree roll only results in him returning to his original position with his cheek pressed against the hardwood. “I wish I had a date.”  

“Do you wanna be a lonely heart and curse Valentine’s Day and all those stupid couples like us or do you wanna fall in love and be a traitor like Gelgar?” Auruo scowls. 

“Traitor,” Abel replies without missing a beat. His eyes begin to well up with tears and his bottom lip begins to wobble. “I want to be loved.”  

“Me, too,” Mitabi says into the microphone, his voice echoing across the room as James Blunt continues to croon sadly.  

The five of them listen to “You’re Beautiful” in silence.  

“Do you think he misses us?” Gunther asks.

Lynne hadn’t expected to enjoy her date with Gelgar all this much, although she hadn’t expected his friends to drop in midway. They had stumbled into the restaurant Lynne and Gelgar were in, insisting to the waiter that they were friends and absolutely needed to be seated with Gelgar and Lynne, and squeezed into the booth beside the couple. They smelled of alcohol and fried chicken, but otherwise were very sweet albeit still drunk from whatever shenanigans they had gotten into earlier that night. Gelgar has had his head in his hands, absolutely mortified, ever since his friends had appeared unexpectedly.  

“Do you normally bring your friends on dates, Gelgar?” Lynne asks as she takes a sip of water. 

“Please kill me” is all Gelgar groans in response.  

Lynne is squeezed between Mitabi and Abel who are drunkenly telling her what a good guy Gelgar is and how she should treat him well.  

“Because of you, he doesn’t have to be part of the Lonely Hearts Club. He’s not part of the sad, lonely single guys’ club anymore,” Auruo hiccups as tears stream down his face. He wipes them away with the sleeve of his shirt. “Lynne, you should keep him that way.”  

“I’m so sorry,” Gelgar mumbles into his hands. He’s too embarrassed to even make eye contact with Lynne.  

Is it the ideal Valentine’s Date? Perhaps not, but Gunther did say he was going to pay the bill so Lynne doesn’t mind it as much as she would have otherwise. 

She lifts her glass of wine and the rest of the group save for Gelgar lift their glasses as well.  

“To the Lonely Hearts Club?” Lynne asks with a smile.  

“Lonely Hearts Club!” the men chorus and take a drink.

any thoughts on the game awards street fighter trailer?

Not too many but a few, the game's got a loooot of content to cover and I'll stick with mostly some character impressions

Dee Jay! I have never been happier to see Dee Jay! ...I've never usually been happy to see Dee Jay, granted, but this redesign is really all that was needed for me to unreservedly love the dude, it does away with the biggest problem with him that was his basic and kinda-racist design (the new art style also helps a lot). It's such an upgrade in terms of his style and vibe and conveying the kickboxing DJ concept. He looks like someone I'd find at Mongaguá beach if I went down there tomorrow, drumming away and living his best life. I'm so happy for this dude.

I like that they opened the trailer with him, with a club party and him dancing along with the protagonist. LOVE the music notes on his new Super, love his new animations and that camera autograph victory pose, love the sparkles and ways they've incorporated his old moves (he's got a Sonic Boom fakeout and, as obnoxious as that's gonna be to deal with, it's a pretty brilliant choice and one that fits him superbly)

Love that the new minigames, I mean of course they brought the basketball parry, and I'm sure the car destruction's gonna be real fun as always, but I'm surprised they dug back that far and brought some things we haven't seen since Street Fighter 1.

I think it's really remarkable that, for the trailer shown at The Game Awards of all things, they chose to focus on the return of, arguably the least popular of the New Challengers, and three new characters. Everyone assumed it was a dead giveaway that this was gonna be the Cammy trailer and the fact that it wasn't, and that people still absolutely loved it without complaints, man, what a testament to how confident these guys are in what they're doing. I have never seen a Street Fighter title be this brazen in it's new faces in the trailer period, I've never seen one where EVERY new character or return of an old character, without exception is incredibly popular and well-received.

I'm not too big on Manon? I do like her but she's probably my least favorite as of yet, feels a little more gimmicky than the others and I kinda wonder if she wasn't some SFV concept that they held off on (in fact I'm pretty sure I remember seeing some characters like her on the drafts for Kolin and Menat). She's definitely filling a much-needed niche as the agile pseudo-grappler and, those months of dance training I took for music theater definitely give me a greater appreciation for her animations and pose work.

She's been compared with Abel a lot but I kinda feel like she's a response to Shermie? Definitely with her alt costume. Capcom and SNK riff on each other all the time and I do wonder if someone in the SF6 dev team saw that KOF XV Shermie trailer a couple years back that got the biggest viewcount of all the characters and thought to themselves, hey why don't we have our own sexy French fashionista grappler lady, and that's how Manon was born.

Oh GOD, Marisa, the standout of the trailer to me. I was hooked from the design alone but that trailer, good God, what a character. Everyone thought she'd be a grappler but no, she's just a tank, absolute beast mode woman who just bulldozes through whatever puny shit you do to repaint the pavement with your face. I get stupid looking at this character, what a glorious addition to the Giants Club of Street Fighter characters.

SHE LIFTS LIONS LIKE KITTIES, living the dream.

She might have some ties to the Illuminati characters? I’m curious if she’s gonna be a villain or anti-hero or on the “just here to fight good” alignment, I’m cool with all of these.

She’s Zangief-size and built for it and we’ve NEVER seen a female character be depicted like this in a fighting game. Every other “big girl” people point to in these games is pretty much always some fitness model with, at best, muscle definition in the arms but a typically thin stomach and torso, identically-attractive to all the other female characters but slightly more ripped.

You never see women characters built the way Marisa is, You just don’t see muscular women depicted often (if at all) outside of either someone’s fetish or someone’s punchline. Fighting games have a marginally better track record with body type diversity than other game genres but still an incredibly, painfully limited one when it comes to women, who are given like two body types to work with and no one would be able to tell 80% of them apart in either type if they switched acessories.

I am supremely glad over the fact that this is a SF6 character just now making her debut, because if Marisa had debuted at any prior installment in the series I do not think she would have been allowed to be this way. If she was in the 2/Alpha/3 titles, there is no way she'd have been given such an unapologetically burly design, and if she was a IV/V character, she'd be most certainly some kind of awful joke they’d have to rework later.

I love that Marisa is a bruiser, that she’s got an rowdy attitude and might even be a villain, but that she’s not fucking Abigail (...I mean maybe she IS fucking Abigail, I don’t know her life, if anyone could do it it’s her but why would anyone want that tho), that she’s allowed to be so cool. I have nothing but praise for this character so far and I really wanna see how her story unfolds and also I NEED TO PLAY THIS.

I main Big Lads in fighting games and I main all the Big Lads in Street Fighter and now I need to main The Big Lass, I need to land that glorious counter of hers ASAP, I need to Sparta Kick my way through matches, this character has my playstyle written over her and I need this game to be out now damnit

I’m sure he was a nice guy and obviously not saying he was the sole cause of everything, but every step of this development process I’ve been thanking my stars that Ono quit the team, we are so unbelievably lucky

While I was holding out some hopes that Capcom would make the final boss a woman this time around (especially with all the new characters being so great that this wouldn’t be a worrying prospect), I was also very curious for JP and I’m really excited with how he’s turned out.

He definitely feels like they took their time connecting a whole lot of separate design ideas and undercurrents into a single character to carry them. He is a rich fighting dandy, a modern equivalent to Dudley and Eagle (Eagle in particular since he was the first weapon user in the series). Some have brought up comparisons between him and Rugal Bernstein, which makes a lot of sense as a character to emulate if you’re doing a Final Boss who’s supposed to be like Bison but different, a next evolution of Bison and his power, since that’s kinda what Rugal was, the next evolution of the Fighting Game Final Boss after Bison and Geese.

Like Ed and Falke, he’s another new character who wields Psycho Power and has mysterious connections to Bison, except he doesn’t suck. He’s got a fantasy wizard vibe and his single-letter name and style seems to imply some sort of connection to G, another powerful fighting wizard dressing and behaving like authority figure, and by far the standout character of V.

G was also said to be the Final Boss of SFV, a position I do think he was qualified for but never really fulfilled because, I don’t think he was supposed to be that entirely, I think they retroactively made him the Boss when Necalli proved to be a dud and the story mode revolved around Bison but they still needed someone who could be the V Boss for assorted reasons.

I think JP is kind of them taking that idea, of G as a Final Boss and important character in the storyline, and sort of doing it right this time around, as he also follows that theme of succession they’ve been doing with these bosses: Emperor/King (Sagat) - Dictator (Bison) - Cult Leader Messiah (Gill) - C.E.O (Seth) - President (G) - N.G.O Oligarch (JP)

He hits such an absurd amount of my aesthetic and conceptual tastes that I, almost don’t believe he’s real? He’s Bison 2 + Eagle + Rugal + G. He’s a Russian supervillain with a dapper red suit vest, gloves reminiscent of black claws, a wonderful mustache and beard combo, and he fights with a cane. He’s got a killer design I absolutely need to take a crack at cosplaying after the game is out.

He has a cat, a detail deemed important enough to go in his bio. He’s voiced by Wally Wingert and Tomokazu Sugita, two people I could watch in anything. He’s got a sick fighting style summoning portals and claws and spike energy spires and one of the most murderous supers in the game yet.

He’s Christopher Lee as a Street Fighter final boss. Can you blame me for thinking more and more that this game is made for me?

Since SNK manga has ended, I wish we got the prequel of the snk,but with the VETERANS this time. They had sacrifice a lot to eren & 104th but not all of these veterans being remembered & appreciated enough.

Y'all maybe didn't agree 'cause their personalities were bland & didn't contribute much too the plot.NO, most of them barely has screentimes & died too quickly. The manga/anime focus more on 104th kids & for now, the marleyans(I actually didn't give a fuck about most of them). Even the spin-off serious like junior high & snk school castle didn't give enough content to the veterans

The veterans got much screentimes if it involve 104th(eren with Og levi squad,Historia & the others with Mike squad. Hange squad(aside Moblit) didn't have much screentimes) We didn't get to know them enough & we didn't know how is their relationship with other veterans.

AOT veterans content/information we got in canon,mostly are Levi,Hange,Erwin,Mike(but not much).The fandom didn't help either.

I might be biased 'cause I usually focus more on the minor characters,but I NEED MORE OF THEM.

Edit: If Isayama has enough time & much ideas to make SNK spin-off series(junior high,snk school castle etc),then why the fuck not to our beloved long-forgotten survey corps veterans?

Okay. I know this is really reaaaally ooc, but I have this headcanon that the Reiss' children undergo a hard training at the very start of their lives. They learn how to handle every weapon with ease, are excellent fighters and are able to track down every single spy. Through this time, they refine their senses to perfection, up to the point where they could easily surpass the Ackermans. And all of this only to protect their true and only king!

Bonus: they all wear beautiful knight armors and primarly fight with the sword.

The people in Hange’s death vision

Idk what to call the “emotional moment where character imagines the ghosts of all their fallen friends” so I’mma call it the death vision for now.

Based on the little cap, I think that might be Dieter/Dita Ness in the background, but that’s just speculation. In the second panel with dead ghost-people, I think it might be Nanaba all the way on the right, but again, not at all sure. The rest of the people are unrecognisable to me.

Now on to the clearest part of the death vision.

In the first panel we see clearly see Nifa and Keiji on the left. All the way on the right, we see goggles-kun, who is credited as Abel in the anime. All three were part of squad Hange and all three were killed by Kenny’s gang during Uprising.

Unsurprisingly, Moblit, their’s right-hand man and executive officer of squad Hange, is also there.

Front-and-center is Erwin, with Miche behind him.

In the second panel we see Moblit, Erwin, Miche and Abel again, as well as two rather clearly-drawn characters whom I don’t immediately recognise.

The first one is indicated by a single question mark. At first I thought this was Eld, but Eld has a little beard and this character does not so that’s a dead lead. I can’t think of anyone else who this could be, but it’s hard to believe that it’s just some rando dude, because he is very clearly drawn.

The we have the second mystery character, indicated by two question marks. I thought it was Petra at first glance, but it doesn’t quite seem to check out. The face and hair are slightly different, and it’s odd that the rest of Levi squad wouldn’t be with her (as they were in Levi’s and Erwin’s death visions). Again, I can’t think of anyone else who this might be.

Squad Hange

Six headcanons about this subset of the Fourth Squad!

1. Hange didn’t pick random soldiers to constitue the Titan Reserach Team, also known as TRT. 

They selected those who met the requirements:

They've been in the Survey Corps for at least 5 years

They can work collectively and individually

They have strong analytical skills

They can keep confidential information

2. Hange didn’t force anyone to join the team. 

If some of them had refused, Hange would have chose other soldiers. Moblit, Nifa, Basima, Abel and Keiji accepted the job.

3. Members of the TRT worked longer compared to normal officers.

Their tasks included:

Studying Titans

Recording and analyzing data about Titans 

Taking part in experiments and tests

Creating new weapons and testing prototypes 

Writing research reports while following a specific format: Abstract, Introduction, Material and Methods, Results, Discussion and Conclusion

They pulled all-nighters to finish their duties. Nifa, Basima, Keiji and Abel couldn’t last more than 48/72 hours without sleep. Moblit’s limit was four days. Hange held the record of six all-nighters in a row.

4. They often apologized for any damage caused during the experiments.

The material they used for their numerous experiments costed money. They reported what happened to the Commander: destroyed equipments, injuries, etc. As the leader, Hange always took responsibility for every incident.

5. They had a great group dynamic.

Hange trusted their subordinates, the Vice Captain and Officers believed in their Captain. Even off-duty, they spent time together by playing cards or drinking in a pub.

6. Moblit drew the squad few days before Abel, Nifa, Keiji and Basima left for their mission in Stohess District.

He kept the group portrait in a separate file. Hange found it while they gathered Moblit’s belongings. They put the portrait in a frame and hanged it on the wall of their office.
