if you haven’t seen it yet, GET OUTTA HERE. if you have, i’m gonna try attacking this detail by detail because i physically cannot rest til i’ve taken these two episodes piece by piece (and maybe cursed the langs a couple hundred times) and reasoned a happy ending for all of them in my mind! that’s just how this works! also i’m doing this directly from memory and discord vents, so if i miss anything please tell me

the homeless dude knows foreverandalways!emma from somewhere and is trying to stop her and paul from getting married (more on this later!)

ted’s at the wedding on october 17, 2019 (this is super important)

faa!emma matthews (to separate from tgwdlm!emma perkins) isn’t the real emma perkins. she’s an android double constructed by ccrp technical (oh yeah bitch) who has emma perkins’ dna, face, and life because--

tgwdlm!emma perkins sold her biological info in a shady deal for quick money to some corporation (mmm thAT one). she also spent her time backpacking in guatemala. in this universe, she’s never met paul, was presumed dead because she nearly died in guatemala, had her things and identification stolen, and had to make it back to hatchetfield without any form of id

tgwdlm!emma dies by paul’s hand, goaded on by faa!emma matthews, and is dropped in a lake (rip, sweet bby, you deserved so much better)

what about paul, you may ask? oh, this isn’t tgwdlm!paul, this is paul 23, a clone of paul produced by ccrp who later killed tgwdlm!paul and led a revolution of clones against the company that made them. he has most of our paul’s person down, except for his relationship with emma and memories here and there

android!emma and paul 23 are gonna kill homeless man in the ending (oh man yeah this is important)

time bastard

(where the HELL do i start)

in this universe, professor hidgens talks to siri instead of alexa. this is while he’s talking to ted about the potentials of getting laid by robots (which is the most disgusting thing i have ever had to type but it does, in fact, get worse)

ted had a previous love named jenny. in this time, he isn’t an asshole and he doesn’t objectify women, he repeatedly calls jenny the love of his life and his best friend (which i’m so soft for), but on october 17, 2004, jenny agrees to move in with andy to clivesdale (fuck clivesdale), even though she loves ted (who wouldn’t). this causes ted to become the pushy asshole we all hate. (it gets worse)

ted gets blackout drunk and transported to an alternate reality where he and jenny get married and he’s the boss of ccrp technical.

this vision is shown by a new eldritch horror god named tinky, who explains that he has ted in some yellow box of time/space/reality, and deems ted the time bastard. essentially, he’s fucking with ted on supernatural levels.

ted’s office is directly under what’s basically a time machine, an experiment worked on by coven communications research and power. when ted tiredly drudges over to his office for late night paperwork, he falls asleep on his chair and jokingly says he’ll be there for 85 years, which is how he accidentally tim travels

ted wakes up on october 17, 2104, 85 years in the future. he finds out that ccrp is doing human experimentation, using emma perkin’s biological info as an example, the world is divided into corporations and the leader of future ccrp is kilgore, someone who’s been waiting to hunt ted down because

ted is now outside major timelines, meaning his dna has genetic codes to unlock time travel. kilgore wants to kill ted for his dna.

ted manages to escape. he uses a futuristic weapon to disintegrate kilgore. he runs away back to his office and realizes that he can travel places anywhere in time. instead of going back to 2019, he chooses to travel back to 2004 to get back together with jenny

in a horrible turn of events, ted kicks andy 2004 ass, who identifies ted as “the bastard” and vows revenge (who’s andy? READ BACK UP) and jenny accidentally gets disintegrated. ted’s traumatized and tries to go back to his office to go back four hours earlier, but because the time machine hasn’t been invented yet, he gets stuck in 2004

tinky reappears and fucks with ted some more, forcing ted to listen to that yellow box of people living, dead, and nonexistent. this warps ted’s mind and permanently traumatizes him, leaving him alone, mentally disturbed, and homeless. (i can’t say enough how many times i typed “i’m so sorry ted” on all the chats i was on during watching this it HURTS)

as the homeless man, on october 17, 2019, ted tries to stop paul and emma’s wedding, having remembered that info on emma from his earlier trip. this fails and he gets kicked out

i’m sure you know what happens, but android! emma and paul 23 kill homeless man ted. this gets his spirit (?) stuck inside tinky’s box

inside the box is a maze of of strange proportions, and tinky controls ted and other people

ted considers paul his best friend

ted’s last name is spankovsty (not even gonna comment on this)

5am

Ugh, awake far too early. I was up late, and figured I’d have a bit of a lie-in this morning, because it’s saturday, but no! no. traitor body.

of course i’m fretting about how I can’t get to the farm. so, a quick farm update:

Normally by this time I’d’ve been out there twice. I go help on my sister’s farm every spring and summer and fall, and it was ostensibly to help with chicken processing but I always wind up doing childcare and household tasks.

This year they have more help than normal, but they also can’t quarantine. So Annie initially said no don’t come, and then said I could come if I wanted to but she wasn’t going to ask me to, and then last night said don’t, again. I’ve still been toying with the idea of joining them for the first chicken processing day, which is at the end of this month, but if I did, I’d have to isolate for two weeks afterward I think, so I couldn’t come back to MM and DF’s house to help with the kids for two weeks after whenever I finally manage to tear myself away from the farm.

If I still had my yurt I’d probably chance it-- get out there, set it up, spend a while there-- in fact I’d’ve gone before now. But, that burnt down in October, and I haven’t found a replacement, and there are no firm plans for a replacement, and I can’t live in my sister’s guest room indefinitely. Well, maybe I could, but. (I got the yurt because at the time they didn’t have a guest room, and I’ve kept it because they only have the one guestroom and BIL’s folks all live far away and love to show up basically unannounced on no notice, and also it is just really nice to have a place of one’s own to go and keep one’s things and keep one’s own hours. No, the yurt doesn’t have a bathroom, but there’s an outhouse and I was working on getting myself a little washing-up sink at least.)

They don’t need me at the farm. The way the labor market is, and the way they’ve been adaptively suddenly setting up the on-farm retail space, they’ve got income and also staff, and it’s not the usual needing more help than they can afford bind. They’ve got not the usual two interns, but three, and to boot they’ve got a livestock manager-- an expansion they’d been working toward and planning on already, but. The crew seems super nice this year, and chatty and motivated.

And that’s good, but I’m sad to be missing it, and I have not seen or heard my Farmkid niece in months and I am so, so, so sad. I like the kids here, of course I do, I’ve known them since they were born and they’re basically niblings of mine at this point, sure-- I expect I could just call them my godkids and it wouldn’t be incorrect except for how there’s no church stuff really involved-- but I’ve always been there for Farmkid and now I’m not, and I miss her.

(I should probably Zoom or Skype or Hangouts them at some point. I am not so good at that sort of thing.)

Ah well. It’s getting on toward 6am, which is the hour at which the Boy of this house awakes. We made him several stuffed animals last night, while the Xboxing was going on-- I’ll probably discuss those when I eventually write that recap-- and have left them for him to find in the living room, and i am quite certain I will overhear him making the discovery. If I try to sleep now, that’ll put an end to it when it happens...

I had anxiety two Saturdays ago, too, and you know why? it’s my body completely misinterpreting my anticipation that Dude is going to visit, and warping me into complete garbage. It’s just my dude, he’s just going to come out and see me for the first time in two weeks, he’s just going to spend like, 24 hours here and then go back, and it’s not going to be that dramatic, but it’s been so nerve-wracking to be suspended in this nothingness that any stimuli at all = anxiety attack.

Also I got my documents from the DOL, and the determination is that since my social security number has been incorrect on my W-2s for some years because my employer is a dumbass, I therefore have zero income eligible for unemployment, and so I have to apply instead for pandemic assistance, but that’s stupid, and I don’t know how to fill out the form because there’s no part in there to be like “listen my employer’s fucking stupid and I have in fact been working for the last eleven years, I do have eligible income for this and you should give me money” but I don’t know how to get help and I don’t understand what to do with the forms, and I just. Might. Maybe. I don’t know what to do. So that sucks.

Yeahhhhh I’m not getting any more sleep this morning. Fuck.

Top 10 creature cards in Core Set 2020 that I’d like to see reprinted -within reason-

With Modern Horizon’s on the horizon of release, I thought we should talk about Core Set 2020. Because you know that’s how this works. What with a constant ever hype machine...seriously Wizards, let people breathe and play the cards for two months, before you do spoilers for the next set... Now while many would talk about cards they want to see reprinted; Goblin Guide, Doubling Season, etc. (Myself included). I want to talk about some cards that are less likely to warp a format, that desperately need a reprint, and might breathe some life into Standard. Now in Core Set 2019, Wizards of the Coast gave us two highly sought after Modern Cards in Scape shift, and Crucible of Worlds, so I hope that’s a continuing trend. This also aids my choices. Both those cards never touched Standard at all. This will be a multi-part article, with enchantments, lands, artifacts, instants, and sorcery’s. To follow at a later date. All will be top 10′s as well. With a follow up of what mechanics I’d like to see in Core Set 2020 So, shall we? We’ll start with the least likely of reprints, to the most likely.

Number 10

The least likely of reprints to grace us. Let’s talk about why. MT here is a colored artifact, and while yes, Bolas’ Citadel is one, Wizards might consider that a bit too “complicated” for a Beginner level set. Now let’s talk about why MT should be reprinted. There’s very little artifacts that MT could bring in that could warp the format. Given the example above of Bolas’ Citadel, this brings it out at the earliest a turn early, and yes there’s other implications, but that doesn’t break standard. My other reasoning is the price tag. While TCG player has Transmuter at a reasonable price of $9 - $12, it has applications in Commander, and a lower price and some new art would be great. Also this let’s us play some fun head games, given what Wizards could print in the Artifact department over the next few sets. Number 9

A mythic, that saw tons of play in its Standard tenure. MotWH can interact with the new Tolsmir, Arlin, etc. More of a Timmy deck, and a great way to keep slower control decks in check, and can help in the Mid-range Vs. Mid-range decks. While not expensive in the $4-$6 range, it could stand a reprint at a rare slot this time around. Number 8

The Sad robot, has seen countless reprints. Solemn doesn’t break standard, and the decks it does help; Mid-range/ control decks, there’s better slots that this card. This card ranges from $5- $8. This is merely to stable that price, and yeah, maybe help budget Standard decks get some mana fixings.

Number 7

Got Elk? Control is annoying...Says everyone who doesn’t play it. While this should be lower on the here. We need a solid replacement when we lose Carnage Tyrant. The can’t be Countered and the low mana cost is what really sells this card. Protection I think is still easy for a beginner to understand. Also, it’s an Elk. Smash face and avenge Bambi. Number 6

With 46 Auras in Standard, at least half will rotate out in October. Kor Spiritdancer allows us to have a Voltron/ Enchantress Standard deck for Standard. It’s a simple, and sweet card for beginners. I do not think this will break Standard. Most Aura’s don’t achieve much, and even in Core Set 2019, we have the White and Green Enchantress, and that had no impact on Standard. This card is less than $5, but can, under the right conditions. Make for some fun budget Standard decks.

Number 5

So with rotation, we might lose Shock and Lightening Strike. While Unlikely, Wizards did at one point think Shock was “too good”. So if those do Cycle out, let’s bring back another red classic. Ball Lightening at best is six damage on turn three, at worst it does nothing. It’s a fine card to reprint. Rather hard to splash in other decks. Seeing as how we’re losing a large portion of our “perfect” land base. It’s also what red and most aggro decks want to be doing on turn 3. Tons of damage. Seeing as this card is less that $3, I couldn’t see why this card can’t be reprinted. Other than Wizards not wanting to hear players scream “I came in like a Ball Lightning~” at Mythic Championships.

Number 4

It ramps, it blocks, and it even has a lion. This card isn’t super expensive, nor is it flashy. We had a Knight sub-theme in Dominaria, and this is a sweet tie-in to that. Another card that’s under $5, it won’t go crazy for the market. White’s issue is the lack of land searching, this is a fine balance. If you’re going first, you’re not playing this on your turn 2, or even 3. It’s a great draft card, and could even stand to be dropped to Un-common, because I don’t think that warps sealed too much either. Beginner friendly, and just some great art.

Alright, this card should be at like number 9, but here me out. 42 elves in Standard with 17 rotating out (possibly less). Even if let’s say Wizards reprints Nettle Sentinel in the same year. What are we currently ramping to? We’re losing Banefire, and other go big strategies. This card ranges from $6-$9, and can help people trying to build Elves for Modern. Also, this was a rare in Eternal Masters. Bring this back to Uncommon and just leave it be. Again, there’s no win-cons that people have access to. This is a perfect Standard to reprint it...I dunno, help the elves. Number 2

Bring back Young blaz-y. Spell decks could use a legit win-con...because infinite turns and doing nothing is dumb...give them this $1-$2 uncommon, and let combo/ control decks win with creatures.

One of my all time favorite cards. This card is everything. A great sealed card, a sideboard answer to problematic cards like lands and such. No reason for this card to not be reprinted. This is at most $1, but it can help push green decks into a more stable playing field. In limited, this is fine late game drop, that helps those aggro mirrors. Also, it’s oozing with potential~ Well that’s a wrap on the creatures I’d like to see reprinted that are within reason. What are some cards you’d like to see reprinted? I know I didn’t hit many top dollar rares and mythics, but I am doubtful that Wizards will be doing that in Coresets. Given chapter 25 summary

Soooooo :D I'm back with chapter 25~ The first time I saw the spoilers of this chapter, [thanks to @kat-division who always uploads them quickly for those of us who CANNOT wait- thank you honey :3] -I hated it. I was frustrated and pissed at Akihiko! Not anymore~~

Spoilers ahead! I'll leave my comments within brackets [ ] excuse my random fangirling *cough* I apologise Feel free to point out any errors :) Enjoy~

The chapter starts off with a rather unsettling scene unfolding at Haruki's place. Haruki is walking around his apartment looking for Akihiko. Its day one of the third round of competitions (finals) of the Countdown Amateur Contest (CAC) and they had made plans to go check it out. Haruki is trying to reach Akihiko on his cell phone but he isn't attending the call. He seems a bit worried as he thinks Akihiko should've returned home a while ago if he had to do a late night shift at his part-time job. Finally, he notices Akihiko's cell phone in the corner of the couch (/Akihiko's makeshift bed) while the call connects to voicemail. Haruki looks upset.

cover page: Akihiko :) [is it just me or does Akihiko look a lot less WILD in the recent chapters 0.0] "Feeling like someone called me, I look over my shoulder. I always wanted you to call my name. I wanted to wish for it" "By the person that loves the music which did not love me."

scene change: Live house (CAC venue) Its raining outside and we see people entering the venue. In the following panel, Ueno and Mafuyu are seen collecting ballot paper. Mafuyu turns around after hearing someone call his name and he finds Shizu and Hiiragi looking at him

[aren’t they pretty? :3] He quickly goes over to greet the pair. Ueno looks at him- his expression a little wary?[and super adorable]

In the narration that follows, it is explained that its the month of October and the first day of the CAC- the competition was about to start. Mafuyu calls Uenoyama and he joins the trio. Hiiragi and Shizu look at Ueno [ Its funny to see Hiiragi and Shizu sizing him up- serving curious (~Shizu) and borderline hostile looks (~Hiiragi) ]

Mafuyu introduces them to each other. He tells Ueno that they're his "childhood friends Shizusumi and Hiiragi" (Shizu- drummer; Hiiragi- base and Vocal) That they're participating in the CAC and will be performing on that very day. Uenoyama greets them with a "hello". Mafuyu continues, true to his eccentric nature- introducing Uenoyama to the pair as his "boyfriend". (Uenoyama is shocked :D :D) and tells them that he plays the guitar in their band. Hiiragi looks openly hostile by now ->

[ can we take a moment to appreciate this ^ panel :D :D look at that CAT!]

[ lmaoooo this cat :"D ]

*ahem* Shizu, on the other hand seems shocked at the fact that Mafuyu has a boyfriend. Mafuyu notes that its the first time he has seen Uenoyama but Hiiragi already did see him once (Uenoyama doesn't remember Hiiragi's name or face) Hiiragi scoffs and turns away saying "disgusting" :D Then Hiiragi displays his prickly and warped personality: launching attacks on the pair- asking them why they're there even though they only have to perform the next day. If they're being complacent and not practicing :D By now Ueno is thoroughly irked and points to Hiiragi shaking with fury while looking at Mafuyu like as if he wants to punch this foul-mouthed kid. Mafuyu says that he understands the feeling :D

More narration follow explaining the format of the CAC- which has a stage performance quota. The first round- a document screening. The second round- online poll and finally after the participating bands are narrowed down to a few dozen groups, they perform live on one of the two days of the final round and the winner(s) are elected by voting.

Hiiragi comments on the size of the audience, and how it seems more like a regular LIVE than he had expected. Ueno points out that is so because of the venue being a normal Live house. Mafuyu agrees that its different from what he imagined. Uenoyama explains the voting system- each member of the audience get a ballot paper each to cast their votes, and this makes the process of finding out the result, much faster. To this, Mafuyu, Shizu, and, Hiiragi react the exact same way which Ueno finds suspicious :3 [ or funny. The word used is "okashii" which means strange/ funny/odd/ comical ]

Hiiragi then decides its time for them to go join the other members. Mafuyu wishes him luck as he is leaving. Hiiragi gives him the middle finger and tells him to just "watch" [damn he looks hot there!] Mafuyu looks amazed and wonders out loud where his confidence is coming from. Uenoyama seems less impressed :P

Haruki arrives then, quite out of breath, apologizing for his tardiness. When Mafuyu comments that its unusual for him to be late, he explains that stuff happened as he was getting ready to leave. Uenoyama asks him about Akihiko.

Scene cuts to Akihiko standing in the rain with two bags and an umbrella, outside Ugetsu's house (with a complicated face expression). He enters the house and his eyes sweep over the mess on the floor- shattered glass, piles of books and paper, articles of clothing all strewn about.

Scene cuts back to the live house, the staff announce the start of the competition as Haruki explains to the boys that he had waited for as long as he could at his place. That Akihiko was nowhere to be found when he woke up in the morning and he couldn't get in touch with him. He looks thoughtful as he says that this has no deep meaning and he thinks Akihiko will return soon.

Scene cuts to Ugetsu's place again. Ugetsu staring wide eyed at Akihiko with a violin in his hand, and on the final page of this chapter, we see the two looking at each other. Ugetsu says, "Akihiko".

That's it for chapter 25! Chapter 26 will be out on the 30th of this month ^.^ yay~ And..! we probably will have to go through the dreaded four-month-long wait pretty soon as Sensei has to prepare for the release of the 5th volume of Given at end of this year. So she might skip the September issue of Cheri+ or maybe the November issue. I don't think any announcements have been made yet, so we will have to wait to find out..

So...... I'm super excited to see Hiiragi's band perform. And I love Hiiragi's personality- it's refreshing :D Haruki saying that (Akihiko's disappearance) has no deep meaning and he should "be back soon" threw up flags =.=

:| As for the elephant in the room situation...Akihiko is probably going to bid adieu. Ugetsu might stay quiet and let Akihiko pack his bags and leave- then suffer a breakdown or a slump later.... OR, he might go ballistic and try to stop Akihiko.. God forbid Akihiko gets hurt in the process. OR, we might be overreacting and they will deal with it like the grown-ups they are *eye-roll* and decide to part ways amicably [-_- yeah right]

OR.... he has decided to go back to Ugetsu. But I don't think that's very likely because, [it is a bit blurred, BUT-] does this look like the face of a man who seems overjoyed by that prospect? ->

Well, there are many possibilities... But the one thing I absolutely DO NOT want to see happen- is Sensei pulling an Old Xian! and not showing us what happens next until the 27th chapter or.. EVER! :O Worry not! I'm wrong most of the time :P

Q&A: Ice Nine Kills’ Spencer Charnas Talks Horror Movies, ‘The Silver Scream’ and Touring With Atreyu

This interview previously aired on idobi Radio and is for everyone who was too lazy to tune in. Enjoy!

Listen up, everybody. If you’ve yet to check out Ice Nine Kills’ gory, hard-hitting, horror-obsessed LP The Silver Scream then it’s clear you are not living the best Halloween life possible.

With 13 tracks all centered around some of the best horror films including Halloween, Friday The 13th, Saw, Jaws and many more, Ice Nine Kills’ latest release has quickly become an instant October staple around The Noise office.

And now, just one week away from the best holiday of the year (fight us if you don’t agree), we thought it’d be more than appropriate to give you all our interview with Ice Nine Kills mastermind Spencer Charnas as he discusses all things horror, The Silver Scream and their upcoming Noise Presents tour with Atreyu, Memphis May Fire and Sleep Signals.

With Atreyu being one of the first metalcore bands you started listening to, how does it feel to get to go out and do a full US tour with them?

Spencer Charnas: It’s an absolute honor. You know, being someone in a band that was totally influenced by Atreyu -- I remember when we started to be more metal, Atreyu was 100% an influence on myself, especially the album The Curse. So the fact that Atreyu even knows who we are, let alone wants us to open for them, is just a really big honor. It’s kind of surreal.

Have you gotten to know Atreyu at all over the years?

I met them on Warped Tour 2016 when they were on that tour. I remember Brandon [Saller drums/vocals] watched us some of the days when they were on the tour. You know, we just talked here and there backstage, they were super nice and actually invited me to come out and sing “Lip Gloss and Black” with them on one of the dates. So that was really cool. Other than that, just small talk through Instagram and just telling them I’m really excited about touring with them and they just seem like really nice, genuine guys.

Obviously you have a new record to promote on this tour. Are you guys going to be playing any new songs?

Definitely. We’re probably going to play about five or six new songs from the album.

Wow, that’s awesome! When it comes to your tours, you guys usually have a good amount of production. For this Atreyu tour, do you guys plan on doing something similar?

Well you know, when you’re a support act you really can’t go all out. There are restrictions on what you can do because you’re not the headliner. But we’re going to do as much as they let us. I think the real production for us and with this album will be saved and reserved for when we can headline.

So let’s talk The Silver Scream. You guys took somewhat of a risk putting so much into this album with the movie-like music videos and the somewhat style change on certain singles. To have all the success it’s had so far, where do you hope that leads to moving forward?

I just really hope that every horror fan that’s out there, or as many as possible who have never heard the band, really embrace this record. From what I’ve seen, from industry people I know or people that are in the horror movie world who aren’t really familiar with the Warped Tour scene or the metalcore scene or even the Octane scene, they’ve just been telling me that they love this album and they love the concept even though they aren’t really well-versed in the world of metal where we come from. And you know, [they’re saying] that [The Silver Scream] is getting them into this kind of music, so that’s really good to hear. At the end of the day, I think our number one goal is to please the people who have been with us for a long time, that have supported the band through thick and thin and we just want to give them something special. That’s the number one goal.

So with all of the songs on The Silver Scream having some sort of a horror movie tie-in, which song do you think was the hardest to fit with a movie?

I think they all presented their own challenge, I don’t think I can narrow it down to just one. But speaking generally, one of the biggest challenges was making a song, whether it’d be [based off the] Halloween or Friday the 13th franchise, and giving a voice to a character that never speaks. That was just challenging in itself. Some of the characters, be it Eric Draven from The Crow or Freddy Krueger from Nightmare on Elm Street, those are characters that speak and have a voice and it’s very clear what their personality would be if they were singing, in my opinion. But there’s also Michael Myers who never utters a word through all his films. So just kind of playing with that and trying to figure out how to throw my voice in a way that is different and distinct in trying to give each character on the album their own voice was challenging. I think probably the most difficult one if I had to pick was Pennywise from IT. You know, because that’s a character that goes from a jovial clown voice that has to entice a little kid into the sewer system in order to bite off his arm. And then, from being jovial and happy as a clown to switching to basically the devil who eats kids was a difficult challenge but it was fun to play with.

Do you think you guys would have still done “IT Is The End” had the new IT not come out? Do you think seeing the remake helped inspire you?

I’m not really sure. I’ve always been a fan of the original. I think Tim Curry in that original film was brilliant. I believe the guy that directed the original, Tommy Lee Wallace, was very involved in the Halloween franchise directing Halloween III. So I’m just really a fan of that and I really think the new one honestly lived up to the hype. I thought it was beautifully executed, you know with Tim Curry, those are some big clown shoes to fill and Bill Skarsgard is just great. And yeah, I think it brought it back on my radar, not that it ever really left, but it kind of just kicked it up a bit.

Speaking of remakes, are you excited for the new Halloween?

Oh man! To say I’m excited would be a large understatement. I absolutely can’t wait. Everything I’ve heard about it is so great.

You don’t think it will flop like some of the newer Halloweens?

You know, I’m sort of a big fan of the franchise as a whole -- there’s only a couple that I’m not really a fan of. But you know, just based on what I’m seeing as far as studio projections and just the all-around hype on the film and the fact that Jamie Lee Curtis is back and John Carpenter is involved and doing the score, I don’t know, I don’t think it can miss. And from what I’ve heard, the reviews have been overwhelming that this is a sequel that finally lives up to the original.

And speaking of the Halloween franchise, you recorded some vocals for The Silver Scream at the Michael Myers house, right?

Yeah, I took advantage of the fact that I live in West Hollywood now and I went and recorded some of the vocals, some of the small post-production stuff, on the properties of the Michael Myers house in Pasadena and 1428 Elm Street -- the house from Nightmare on Elm Street which is technically not really on Elm Street but it is the actual number 1428 just like the iconic number from the series.

That’s cool! How did you set that up? You just went and did it?

I just went and did it and hoped no one called the cops [laughs].

So back to The Silver Scream, were there any movies that you wanted to write a song about but it just wasn’t able to make the record?

Yeah, you know one of my favorite horror movies and favorite films of all time is Scream. I definitely wanted to get that one on the record but it just wasn’t coming out to my standards and the last thing I want would be a song based on my favorite movie to not be my favorite song ever written. So unfortunately we didn’t get that ready in time but we do pay tribute to the great, late Wes Craven with [”The American Nightmare”]. So I was happy that we could get a Wes Craven influence on the album because he’s so great and we love his work.

You guys have a lot of guest features on this new record. Was that a goal coming into the writing process or did that happen organically?

It kind of happened organically. You know, when I locked in one feature I was like “Man, this is so cool!” The first feature that I sort of had the idea was Randy [Strohmeyer] from Finch. Finch is one of my favorite bands [who is] very inspirational to my writing. And I recently became friends with him and getting him on the album was really cool. Then I met Fenix TX when we were on tour in London and I struck up a friendship with those guys and went out to write with the singer Will [Salazar] and then told him how the song came out so cool [so we] got him to sing on it. And then Tony [Lovato] from Mest, another one of my favorite pop-punk bands. And then, when we were working on the song about IT, it just had this like circus flare and we were like, “Man, wouldn’t it be so cool to get Less Than Jake on this?” and we were like “Yeah, but that would never happen.” And we kind of reached out to their people and they were totally into it, which was kind of surreal. They were like “Ah man, a heavy band like this has never asked us to do anything like this!” They were super cool. On other collaborations, we had Jeremy Schwartz who I started the band with in high school who hasn’t been in the band in almost ten years. He came back and we wrote a song together and we got him on the album. My friend, Chelsea Talmadge, who is just a great singer and is a part of that show Stranger Things. We got her to sing and she did a beautiful job. And yeah, it all just came out great.

Hearing some of the people you got as guest vocals, it almost sounds like this is your dream album come true. Not only are you getting to sing about some of your all-time favorite horror movies but you’re also getting to work with some of your all-time favorite bands.

It’s awesome man. Just getting praise from people that I know in horror and people who have produced horror documentaries that I grew up watching, like Anthony Masi who produced the His Name Was Jason documentary and the Halloween: 25 Years of Terror documentary. You know, them just saying this is one of their favorite albums they’ve ever heard, it’s just great. At the end of the day, I’m a fan myself, so to see other people who are so passionate about the genre embrace our album [is great].

Obviously this isn’t an easy question to answer but what do you think initially drew you to the horror genre?

You know, it’s odd. I’ve been into it since I was a little kid. Basically, my love for the genre was birthed at a local video store that was in a grocery store where I grew up. My mom would go shopping and bring me along and to kill time I would hang out in this video store. And you know, for whatever reason I was drawn to the aisle that said “Horror.” And I would look to see the artwork on the covers of these VHS tapes like Halloween and Friday The 13th and I wanted to see what this shit was about. My parents were cool enough to let me watch those films and I think they assumed I’d grow out of it. I guess, you know, 25 years later I’m talking on the phone about it and making an album, so I guess I didn’t grow out of it [laughs]. But yeah, I don’t know. I think maybe some of it was like, I always dressed up like Michael Myers on Halloween and [I would think how] if I was the monster, then the monster couldn’t get me.

Do you think if music never panned out, you would’ve tried to find a way to work in horror movies?

Absolutely! It’s kind of one of my other goals. We’re making this movie and I’m acting in it. I’ve never acted before and I’ve got a lot to learn. But helping come up with the videos, scripts and screenplays, it’s just something I’d like to get into. Someone like Rob Zombie is so cool because he does music and he directs films. You know, maybe someday down the line, I can accomplish that dream too.

How nerve-racking was it to do the acting and be so involved with this project?

It was definitely nerve-racking and watching the videos I could definitely tell I got better over time. There were some amateur moves I didn’t know I was doing, like little nervous ticks. But from what a lot of people are saying, the kind of people who wouldn’t bullshit me, actually said they think I could maybe do it someday with some practice. They think that I was pretty good but we’ll see [laughs].

Thoughts While I Watch The Nintendo Direct A Day Late

Thoughts on the Nintendo Direct: Yoko Toro is an interesting person, that card game looks interesting but Y wouldn’t I just play Talisman? Cool to see more isometric RPGS on switch.

Hyrule Warriors is fun! Age of Calamity is where I really fell in love with the musou formula again - I played a LOT of DW Empires 5, so taking over a map / doing stuff on a map before combat is fun. The silly weapons like the broom etc also make this really fun. I’ll gladly play more of this. the new scientist warrior looks sick! Who asked for Chocobo GP? This looks like Garfield Racing re-skinned and with better physics maybe. When they said Chocoboooooo! I was hoping for a Chocobo’s Dungeon. My buddy Ted got that game with his PS1 and we though it was soooo cool, especially after playing Azure Dreams on Gameboy.

Thanks for telling us when we can see the new Smash Fighter which is probably more Sword boy / Sword gorl why won’t you put any interesting fighters in this game I am moving to Smash Bros CatDog Edition. Kirby washing up on an island is the most unlikely thing for a being who summons giant warp stars to fly through the universe on but okay. this looks INCREDIBLE. Kirby + Nier vibes with the busted up environment. what bums me out is that we saw the same enemy like, 10 times in the first 10 seconds of that one area. The giant snakes / fish are cool, but lets see some more variation maybe 3D Kirby boss fights look pretty freaking fun! 3D Kirby looks pretty great. It will suffer from Kirby things and also be fun. I will play it.

Hey, don’t worry. We’ll tell you some things about Animal Crossing in October. Not now - but in October. U will have content in November. Just hold on pls, be on the lookout for all ur rotten turnips in ur house

Lets move on, to more stuff second free update for Mario golf, which I would LOVE to play but can’t afford rn. I played it at my neighbors the other day and it’s pretty damn good. new courses and seeing little ninji run around will be very fun. Cool, kid Disney game. Dope. Old Republic for Switch looks great! Dying Light 2: Mirrors Edge edition. Oh, we can play with other people? That seems fun. Do we scavenge together? The Control cloud game demo felt okay on my wifi, but IDK about these cloud games as something worth getting on the switch when PC’s are a thing?

Triangle strategy looks dumb, Disgea does that shit better now right? Metroid Dread looks really cool, excited to run from big robot and make Samus Very Strong Hopefully u get to crawl around as big robot at some point in the game. Love the lore dump we get. Dude, Chozo were here! That’s sick!

Many people have been using switch online… Oh, giving out their old roms gathering dust for “free,” with their current sub was too generous for Nintendo I suppose. New plan for N64 games seem sick - the playing together online thing is very cool. Starting library is standard but nothing too exciting. Very excited to see how the emulation handles these games in relation to how they behaved on the console, as all the cool sped running shit we see in these sorts of older games vary depending on the version of the game.

I’m more excited about the Genesis line up than I am about the N64 one, save those two games I don’t recognize. We get Castlevania, a Contra, some puyo, Beatem ups, and playing this version of Gunstar Heroes might sell more of the other one. Expansion Pack is a name.

Notice how Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon and Comix Zone are not on these lists? They are too afraid to give us the best of what both platforms have to offer and it’s a shame.

WIRELESS CONTROLLERS FOR $60 EACH? ARE THEY BLUETOOTH SO I CAN USE THEM WITH OTHER STUFF? WTF

I was just talking to my friends about the Shadowrun Isometric RPGs last night! Cool. Castlevania collection looks dope. Button mapping is huuuuge for me. Love that. An Almighty Classic Returns: Actraiser - even the SNES game was hella off my radar, this looks dope. I’m down to side scroll and then town build. Deltarune + Homestuck are games that I really really want to play but my depression is such that I just sit and stare at the starting screen and nothing happens. One day I will consume Toby’s works and be better for it. But until then, I’ll just be excited for my friends and listen to the baller soundtrack. god dammit I love that dog.

new story of seasons looks cool but Natsume is dead, no hope left cept for Stardew #doomer NAMCO Hamster - yes. Rune Factory 5 might be good on the switch. The 3DS versions were sooooo sloooowwwww for me. I’ve heard really good things about the franchise as a whole though. MARIO movie thoughts: THIS CASTING IS GREAT EXCEPT FOR CHRIS PRATT WTF. WHY IS HIMBO WHO HATES GAYS MY MARIO?

I am scared to tell my family anything because when my ex was posessive and abusive, they pitied me for a moment but told me that I should give him a chance because he comes from a nice family.

Any time i was having a visible mental break down in front of them, would become non-verbal and physically weak, they would tell me i am being weird or dramatic.

It has always started out in dreams, then it starts happening when I am awake too. These visions, these creatures and tortured people. They are always angry with me, they want something from me.

I see them before I hear them, and some times I can feel them too. They aren’t the same every time, even since I was 15 years old, they are always changing.

At first i thought it to be a supernatural occurance, i turned to mystics to learn how to tame my dreams and control myself in hopes I could do the same in the waking world.

But the waking world is much, much different. The same super powers aren’t avaliable here, and my mental fortitude is frail. In the waking, you can’t tell yourself it’s just a dream. You’re only left with the words “it’s not real” even though it very much feels so.

One night in my sleep, the night of new years eve 2019, i was walking through my nightmares unaware, awaiting to wake, when I met a man with stone skin and long red hair named Riley. He interviewed me at a cafe with his boyfriend who has green hair and hummingbird friends, they are counterparts, I will explain later.

Riley followed me, before I was awake, he kept watchful eye, and when the nightmare came to a hallway that led to a bedroom, Riley stopped me. “Fall in love with me, instead” he said. At the time I was upset because my mind was playing the role of a girl lost in her nightmares, and who is this man who tries to stop her? I tried to push past him, but he made the hallway longer, and longer, warping the physics of my dreams. I began to wake up in the dream, and confronted him. I told him i reject his love and to let me control my own fate, if there is something terrifying i must experience it will make me stronger. He insisted this was false, and *changed my dream*, a power that I had specifically unlocked for myself and myself only. This being was behaving against my will for my benefit, and I did not like that.

I rejected him several times as I pushed forward through new nightmares. But just at their climax, he would change the dream again. “Fall in love with me instead” I was so perturbed by this figure, I turned him into a snake. I did not choose the snake, but it turned out to be a coral snake. I was less annoyed by him, but still aware of the power of his presence.

When I woke in new years day, i had a moment of clarity and excitement, I felt as if I had met a new person, not just someone I made up, but that makes no sense, he must be my own figment. Perhaps, a dream guide.

He appears sporadically across my dreams, at first i did not understand, why did he appear so randomly? He didnt appear in every nightmare, and sometimes he wouldn’t be present but leave me trails of breadcrumbs to follow. At the end of the trail, or when he would appear, i realized, it was a dream about new beginnings. I died violently by bloodlu suicide in a dream a year ago, and buried myself in the foam of the ocean and he held my hand and walked the part of me that was still alive back to a happier dream. He is there when i lucid dream and begin to build new worlds, sometimes we have “dates” on the black glass lake, which is a meditation space for me in my sleep, death hides beneath the lake sitting there in comfort, i can walk across the lake under the starry sky, only if turmoil is about do i fall through the water. He told me his name is Riley himself, he has his own will, and own words. He persistently says he wants to help me, and asks me to let him, to which i am reluctant due to my trust issues.

But lately, I’ve been feeling so alone. I moved away from my family in 2016, graduated college, did research and presented data on blackholes across the country — i say this because this is something i always thought was impossible for me— doing things to challenge myself and lay a foundation for a stable future by being a bright student and funny and helpful friend. When covid hit, everyone reacted differently of course. I kept on with “life as usual” taking any opportunity I could to keep going and keep my head and relationship above water. My fiance, who had already expressed a year prior to having feelings for my best friend, would cancel plans, never came to my presentations, had me doing his laundry, all while i was certain the love i put in is the love I would get out, got laid off and decided his way of coping would be to play video games for a year. I was desparate for him to love me all while healing my own heart break on my own knowing not only am i not enough for him, but im not worth consideratiom either. I left him in October of 2020, and from that momenf forward did anything i could to just think of myself or the people who actually did love me, though the list got smaller after the break up. I fell in love with my online friend but we cannof have a close relationship, they told me it was impossible and throughout this year we havs taken turns breaking each other’s hearts, as of this month we are not as close as we used to be a year ago. But I am also not the same person…………i decayed.

I realized i had to move away from my ex and our roommate, im sorry but living with two men who play video games in their underwear every chance they get never cleaning a toilet or shower in their life and grew up with their mothers helping them with everything, while i am trying to live a self-sustaining and active lifestyle, i just could not justify it and i cannot do it anymore. I feel guilty in my living space and i sometimes hate coming home, i would sit in my car to avoid them sometimes. In March i looked for a bigger place where we all could have separate privacy, but after one roommate approached me and asked me when I was leaving, I began my search in to find my own place in april. My plans and findings kept falling through, May was the hardest month this year so far, and i spent most of june recovering. I finally did find a place to live, and my move in date is july 31st. But after the car wreck i felt like i losf so much freedom, so much of my independance, it reinforced in my mind that I could not do it alone, that i would always have to be submissive to others. I felt very defeated, all my efforts were for nothing, the person online i was in love with felt dissappointed by me, my friends were distant, my family even farther, and the worst part is i couldnt tell anyone my full story, and i still can’t. There is so much more that happened with people between these events but these are the highlights

a masterpost about studying

hello friends, i’ve been seeing a lot of masterposts across tumblr lately (that’s probably because i’m new to tumblr lmao) but i’ve found them to be really useful. i’m not exactly sure how to insert links, but i think i’ll figure it out somehow.

here we go!

staying focused

i actually kinda have a huge problem with this, since i always find myself compelled to go on buzzfeed when i desperately need to study for bio, but some apps and chrome extensions are pretty helpful

-forest, a chrome extension. to be honest, i don’t really love it, because it only blocks youtube and facebook, both of which i usually use for studying, actually, but i use it for the pomodoro timer.

-focus now, an app. i really like it except for the feature where i can’t exit out of the app without “giving up,” since i sometimes need to google stuff on my phone that is study-related. still, it helps me put my phone down and focus on my work.

study guides

study guides are kind of a pain in the ass. i’m writing this as i make a bio study guide, which might warp my point of view, but i do think that while study guides can be really helpful, they’re super tedious, especially if you’re rewriting notes. i’m in my freshman year of high school, and my teachers move really quickly in class, so i take a lot of notes. i try to rewrite my notes when i have time, but i almost never have time. even so, i use my free periods and lunch to just summarize what i’ve learned in each lesson (usually using the cornell notes method).

take notes in class. these can be insanely messy and jumbled everywhere. that doesn’t matter. as long as you have the information written down, you’re good to go.

after each lesson, summarize/rewrite your notes. i personally prefer summarizing and then rewriting my notes for a study guide, but it’s completely up to you. i summarize my notes using the cornell notes method, where i write down key points in the margin and i write a one-sentence summary at the bottom. i also sometimes use post-its for this step.

at a certain point (after one week, one sub-unit, etc.), rewrite your notes. yes, i realize that this is really annoying and time-consuming, but it’s actually pretty helpful. be sure to organize them accordingly and use headings! the more often you do this, the better. also, your rewritten notes don’t have to be really long (in fact, they shouldn’t be as long as the notes you take in class, since class notes are often repetitive), but they should adequately summarize what you’ve learned in that period of time with detail.

to make a study guide, take all of the rewritten notes you’ve made throughout the past unit, and study those. if you notice a lot of repetition, rewrite those notes. rewriting notes is super tedious, but it really really really helps with studying.

taking notes from self-studying

i’ve made this mistake countless times, so i’m going to warn you all now: whenever you are studying with different materials than the ones provided to you by your teacher, take notes. this is so so so important. even if it’s a crash course video or a review sheet or a chapter in the textbook, take notes.

take those notes like you would in class, and after you’ve taken all your notes from self-studying, rewrite them and combine them with your rewritten in-class notes. self-studying can be such a great resource when used well, and i really hope you guys don’t miss out on it.

pulling an all-nighter

look, it’ll happen eventually. just be really careful about not doing it too often, because that can seriously damage your body and your growth. here are some tips:

turn off your phone. seriously, it’s one of the best ways to be more productive during your all-nighter. only get on your computer or your phone for research. do not read studyblr posts. do not scroll through tumblr, instagram, facebook, or twitter. do not watch another episode. if you really need your phone on for important notifications, try using one of the self-control apps listed above. you absolutely must limit the time you spend on your phone if you want to be productive.

create a checklist before you start. know what you need to accomplish and how long it will take you to accomplish each task. this will help you plan out your evening and hopefully sleep earlier.

take breaks. yes, every other all-nighter post says this, but the best way to study involves taking short, productive breaks. don’t make these breaks technology-related, though. your grade is much more important than what your friends are posting on tumblr. instead, shower, exfoliate your feet (actually really fun and kind of mood-perking at midnight), clean up your room, make a masterpost on how to study (what i’m doing), or make a cup of tea, which brings us to our next point.

drink some tea. having a beverage is going to help you a lot, especially if it’s hot. this way, you can force yourself to stay awake. i personally don’t recommend coffee, because it can mess with your sleep schedule a little too much, but if it keeps you awake and you’re able to return to your normal sleep schedule the next day, then by all means, go ahead. my personal favorites are lipton tea (yes, i’m an american) and peppermint tea, though i also really like milk tea.

limit all distractions. remove all distractions in your study space. a keychain that you fiddle with when you’re bored while reading your textbook? remove it. your favorite book that you always return to when you really really really don’t want to do your homework? remove it. old tissues that will get in the way? remove them. make sure the only thing you can focus on is your work.

i’m essentially repeating this rookie post, oh well.

IDT "The Fest" Interview 2015

Being involved with The Fest was a wild time. I started going just to see bands and get out of Nebraska every year and eventually wound up making lots of friends and running a comedy stage. My friend Sarah (her favorite movie is The Love Guru) interviewed me before we were friends and I was wildly honored for it to be the guide book that year. Those years were awesome and this interview is a good reminder of how fun and cool punk rock is. Originally published in the guide book for The Fest in Gainesville, FL. October 2015)

How did you become Tony’s comedy point-person? Did you & Tony just bond over pro wrestling? We only recently bonded over wrestling when I was telling him about being a manager for a wrestling stable here in Denver called The Denim Club. I inherited the booking from Kyle Kinane, based off of him trusting me from shows I'd ran in Omaha and the Crom Comedy Festival. Earning Tony's trust was huge because he is a festival wizard and someone I've always looked up to. Being the person in charge of booking is great because it is awesome to create awesome shows, and shitty because hundreds of people get mad at me every year for not booking them on things. Do you have a longer history of Fest? The community? Had you been to Gainesville before? I have been coming down to Fest since Fest 4 off an on and considered it my one big vacation every year. A lot of my favorite bands rarely or never came out to Omaha, so it was my chance to see Paint It Black or Iron Chic. The first year that comedy was added I was in the audience watching Kinane and John-Michael Bond and it really inspired me. Seeing comedians I loved performing at my favorite punk festival was so awesome, and I made it my goal to be involved the next year. I love Gainesville and have so many awesome memories from Fest over the years that I can't imagine my life without it. Is there anyone in particular you’re excited to see perform this year? Pup. Hands down. I love those dudes and they destroyed at Pre-Fest and Fest last year. They were just in Denver at Riot Fest but I missed it so I'm on a mission to see them. I'm also really stoked to see Beach Slang, Lagwagon, The Gamits, Jeff Rosenstock, Elway, The Dirty Nil, Desaparacidos, and all of my comedy pals. I'm an older dude so going to local shows always feels like I'm hanging out with a bunch of cool teens...Fest rules because there are other old dudes all over the place so I can still feel kind of young at heart and at least see other people getting sleepy during late shows. When did you start Crom Fest? Think quick summary. (Also just wanted to add, sponsored by Yelp?! Dang. Big leagues, man.) We started Crom three years ago as a way to showcase how awesome the Omaha indie comedy scene was and as a way to unite all of the people we'd met from putting on shows and touring in places like Denver, Atlanta, and Los Angeles. (Yelp has local chapters in most cities..so it isn't as cool as it seems. All of our sponsors were promotional sponsors, so Yelp just added us to their email newsletter that month. We go broke every year and it rules) How has it changed/grown over the last few years? The first year was a gathering of friends and friends of friends. The second year we stepped it up and tried to bring in some bigger comedians and added more shows and another night. Last year we added Crom West in Denver the weekend after Omaha (which was nuts). This year we are adding Atlanta (Crom South) for a total of three weekends in a row in three different time zones. It is going to be wild. This year we are also changing venues to the Slowdown which is owned by Saddle Creek Records, so I'm super stoked to have those dudes on board. We also are adding Lucha Libre & Laughs wrestling shows to each festival and are planning a Cannonball Run style "race" between Atlanta and Omaha with three teams of comics doing shows each night and filming the whole thing. This is the year I hope we finally break even and maybe get more sponsors involved. We've been extremely DIY about the whole thing and its mind boggling how much it has grown. Where do you see it going? Is there a goal or have you already reached it? I joke about building it up to the point where Crom becomes a less douchey Warped Tour but with comedy and pro wrestling. That would be pretty huge. Right now I'm just stoked about it getting bigger next year. How do you find comedians? Or do they seek you out? Is it a lot of watching mediocre YouTube videos? Initially it was just friends and friends of friends, all kinds of networking and knowing who the cool people in each scene were. Last year was the first time we used submissions, which was kind of terrifying. Adding a gatekeeper paradigm to our DIY festival felt weird, but it wound up exposing us to a ton of amazing comedians that we would have otherwise not known of. Watching all of those videos to make selections was an ordeal that I'm not looking forward too again this year. Last year, you traveled over with a few of the comedians as a little bit of a tour to Fest. You’re doing that again this year, right? Do you enjoy touring? I love it! Before getting in to stand up I was in a bunch of unsuccessful punk bands for a decade and got a little taste. Touring as a comedian is so much easier. No equipment, you can just use a normal car, no worrying about a group of other people...its the best. This year I'm touring with two other Denver comics who will also be at Fest (and Pre-Fest) that starts in New Orleans at a comedy festival and goes all month until we do St. Augustine (a place I completely fell in love with on tour last year) after Fest. Earlier this year, I watched “I Am Road Comic,” and about halfway through I thought “man, that’s just what bands do, why did this guy make a doc about it?” Has the world of comedy been changing lately, and I just never knew it? More accessible? More talent? Comedy definitely became more DIY and more punk rock in a lot of ways. Instead of touring through little weird comedy clubs in the midwest comics are now setting up tours in music venues and dive bars. It is way more accessible now than ever. Instead of waiting and grinding your way up a comedy club's roster you can just go out and build whatever you want. It is so incredibly similar to being in a band. There are so many cool scenes across the country that a lot of people don't know about like Minneapolis, Denver, Austin, New Orleans, Atlanta, Omaha, and so many more. They can be hard to find for people who aren't "in the know" but that's what makes them so exciting and interesting. Had I just been ignorant of this whole kind of “indie comedy” world? Yeah, but don't feel bad about it. I had no idea there was anything outside of shitty club stand up until I heard Kyle Kinane's "Death of the Party" album. Omaha only had one open mic in a town 40 minutes away before we started going nuts and trying to create a scene. We also had the huge benefit of having allies in the music world who would help us with venues (the guys in Cursive own an amazing bar called O'Leaver's that is my home away from home) and encourage us because they saw that what we were trying to do was similar to them building up the indie scene in town. Its all about community with anything I do and trying to be the best person I can and make things that are cool and diverse and fun. The good news is that so many other scenes have people like me. The same spirit that makes punk rock great definitely flows through comedy right now. Do you have some podcast recommendations I should check out? What do you listen to? Will: Age 4 Will floats down the tiled walkway of Best Buy. He makes whooshing noises as he weaves in-between shoppers with huge shopping carts. His homemade cape sails behind him as he gleefully pretends to be a superhero. He’s enjoying himself, even though a few minutes ago he was whining that his legs hurt. The image makes me recall the disaster we had last week when he had to go without it. We’d gone out with my Aunt Jen to Target to look at things Will would want for his birthday. Will was in a phase where everywhere we went he liked to pretend he was a super hero. My mom, seeing nothing wrong with a little imagination, had made him a cape out of my Dad’s old pillowcase with the letters “SW” (standing for Super Will) on the back in blue painters tape. He didn’t leave the house without it. So, of course, when we went to Walmart he insisted that he would wear his cape. My Aunt Jen was staunchly against this. I can vividly imagine how she frankly told my mother so when he first started wearing the cape around. “Do you let him wear that when you go out?” “Yeah of course. He loves it.” My Aunt Jen scoffs, “It’s a little silly don’t you think?” “He is four you know, he’s a little kid. He’s just having fun.” This seemed to quickly put an end of that conversation. But now, with our Mom not here, it was her grounds and her rules. And the last thing she was going to do was have Will walk down the aisles of Target wearing his cape. “You’re not wearing that into the store, Will. Leave it in the house.” She stood with her hands on her hips in front of the door. “No!” I can tell he’s starting to get upset, as his face turns red and mouth starts to turn downward into a pout. “Will, I’m not taking you into the store in that ridiculous cape. You look silly!” “No! No! No!” Will stomps his foot, as tears start to drip down his face, “It’s mine! No!” He’s starting to shake and I can tell a tantrum is coming. Will throws himself on the ground, kicking his legs and slamming his fists into the hardwood. He screams and sobs for fifteen minutes while my aunt stands there, trying to talk him out of the tantrum. “Will, you’re acting like a two-year-old. Do you want me to call your father? Do you think he’ll be happy with this? Four-year-olds don’t throw tantrums like this.” She reaches down to pick him up from the ground. Will is having none of that though, instead he turns and bites her arm. “Will!” She’s furious, I can see it in her eyes, “Jesus you don’t bite! That’s it I’m calling your father.” Later that night was the first time I heard a label put on Will. At seven, the term “anxiety disorder” didn’t have any impact on me. I had no clue what an anxiety disorder was, let alone that they’re the most common psychiatric disability in adults and children with approximately 40 million American adults suffering from one. When I was told that Will was going to go see a doctor I’d been confused. “Is Will sick?” “Not exactly, baby. Will’s just a little different than some of us and needs help from a different kind of doctor.” I had no clue this doctor was actually a psychiatrist.

Will: Age 7 At ten years old I’m not particularly thrilled to be going to some stuffy Christmas party where there would be more grownups than kids. But nevertheless I hurriedly climb out of our car and onto the pavement when we arrive at the party. The ground is dusted in snow, making the light from the streetlamps cast a glow across the entire neighborhood. As we walk up the sidewalk to the house my Dad goes over manners as he always does with Will. “…And what do we do if we don’t like the food they’re giving us? Will?” “Don’t complain?” He mumbles shuffling his feet through the slush. “You got it bud. Let’s work on remembering to try to look a person in the eye when they’re talking to you okay?” Will nods his head resolutely. “Alright.” We finally reach the front door and Will is excited to push the doorbell. My Dad gives him a look that says ‘you better only push it once’ and he listens, Will reaches up and pushes in the white plastic oval only once. The door opens with Mrs. Jenneve on the other side. She ushers us all inside with an “It’s lovely to see you all!” following it up with “How have you been?” But before my parents have time to answer Will speaks up. “It smells in here.” He pinches his nose between his forefinger and his thumb. As it always does, my face heats up and my cheeks stain red. I nudge him in the side with my elbow “Will!” I whisper yell at him. He scrunches his face up at me in confusion mouthing, “What?” “It’s probably the food you’re smelling. I made a ham and a roast.” Mrs. Jenneve laughs through the incident, trying to play it off “I’ve been cooking all day it feels like! Jeff spent all morning…” I glance up at my parents as Mrs. Jenneve recounts the incident Mr. Jenneve had with the snow blower this morning. I can tell they’re both relieved she didn’t take Will’s comment the wrong way but I know that this will definitely be brought up later.

Will: Age 10 With July in full swing, I’m glad to finally be able to lie around all day in the air-conditioned house. For most kids, summer vacation is a much-needed getaway from the monotonous school lessons and homework. Not for Will. He’s been struggling with his reading, failing to reach his grade level in reading tests again and again. This is the second time I hear a label put on Will. When I’m told Will has Dyslexia, it’s something I understand. I’ve been told about it in passing at school, about how some kids can’t read because the letters and number get all jumbled up in their head. This time I can even acutely relate to Will, as I’m still struggling to choose the right way to write ‘b’ and ‘d’s and ‘w’ and ‘m’s at thirteen. After receiving no help from his teachers, my mom decides to take Will to a tutor. Mrs. Parish is a solidly built woman with gleaming black hair and sharp eyes. I can tell even from the first meeting that she’s the perfect fit for Will. She takes his out bursts in stride and can talk him out of a negative state of mind. She can coax him into finishing just about any assignment most of the time, with her gentle voice and firm teaching. Will is particularly defeated today, staring gloomily at the words on the page that he just can’t put together to form a sentence. “It’s too hard. There’s too much left in this book, I can’t do it.” “Don’t think about it like that. Just take it page-by-page, chapter-by-chapter. If you only think about how much you have left you’ll just get discouraged. Tackle it piece by piece, instead of trying to handle it all at once.” Will went from reading at a 1st grade level to a 3rd grade level by that October.

Will: Age 12 The new school year is something Will always struggles with. Desperate to hang on to his sleep schedule and nonstop video game marathons, it always takes him at least a month to get back in the swing of things. This year he’s especially struggling with it. I’ve been hearing my parents have hushed conversations lately. They talk about pulling Will out of the private grade school that I had graduated from and that Will still attends. It’s gotten bad this year; the school won’t offer any of Will’s 504 accommodations. They yell at him for reading his tests out loud, but refuse to place him in a separate testing room. Will is struggling more than ever to keep up with the homework without any of the help he needs. After long nights of deliberating, they decide to transfer him to the public middle school at the end of September. Before Will starts his new school, my Mom decides Will should be reevaluated, that he probably needs more than a 504 plan. This is the third and final time I hear a label put on Will. As a sophomore in high school, I’m not very familiar with the label “Asperger’s Syndrome”, but when I do a quick search of it through Google I recognize the listed behaviors: • limited or inappropriate social interactions • challenges with nonverbal communication coupled with average to above average verbal skills • inability to understand social/emotional issues or nonliteral phrases • lack of eye contact or reciprocal conversation • obsession with specific, often unusual, topics • awkward movements and/or mannerisms Will doesn’t take this label in stride as he did with the others, resenting a label that puts him on the autism spectrum. He’s furious to have to be in different classes than other students, desperate to not be labeled dumb. “Everyone in class is so dumb” he crosses his arms, “It’s too slow.” “It’s not forever, Will. If you work to reach your goals you can go back to a 504 plan instead of an IEP.” My Mom tries to explain to him, but he doesn’t listen. They continue arguing for another hour before my Dad gets frustrated enough to send him to his room. Soon enough I find out through my research into this new label that people who have one disability often times have other disabilities paired with it. I realize that even though Will has dyslexia and suffered through an anxiety disorder that these labels were all really different pieces of this new one.

Will: Age 16 As Will and I check out his schedule for his Junior year, it’s surreal to see AP Chemistry and AP American History printed underneath his name. Will may not be able to write a solid essay but he sure as hell can memorize facts, a talent that shines through in both history and chemistry. Today we drive along the 77 towards Darien Lake on our way to Warped Tour, something he’d been looking forward to for a month. We talk about the future, classes for his senior year and where he wants to go to college. As we sail by trees and cornfields, Will turns to me. “Hey Annie want to hear an interesting fact?” “Not really.” I say at first, tired of hearing irrelevant facts I have no interest in but cave in after seeing Will deflate. “Alright go ahead. What is it?” Will grins, “Did you know Karaoke means "empty orchestra" in Japanese?” “Really? No I didn’t, that’s interesting.” And Will’s face lights up in a smile while he goes into the meaning of other words in foreign languages. I nod along not really listening but letting him go on his random tangent, embracing what makes him different.
