I've had a drink. i think there's something uniquely devastating about so many of the conversations opal had with the other crownkeepers being moments of bittersweet comfort rather than just pure kindness or friendship. It would have been one thing (still devastating) if the conversations were about like. fluffy bonding or unfiltered affection or moments of joy. But so many of them were. tired. understanding. Someone is wiping away tears. tired smiles. battle bruised. Do you ever feel like you're not real? Sometimes we glorify people and its fine if we never see them again. but then you meet them again. I'm scared. I'm worried. I'm terrified.Opal is wearing a spiky crown and dripping ichor and this is not a group of friends averting their gaze from it. All these quiet moments and tired understanding. This is a group of people that love each other, that really genuinely like each other, and are worried about each other. That want so badly to help.

They're standing there and their friend is hurting them and maybe the worst part is not that. Its the memory of that same friend, tired, in tears, in the dead of night, after a battle. Scared. So worried about that same thing. Your friend is hurting you and all you can think about is that you know, how scared they were of that exact thing.
