“Oh, you're the Prince!” They have heard enough stories of the Prince — and the King they grew up to become. Legends of the Four Trials. Tales of past glory. Rumours of madness. They ruled in Eye of Eden, a long time ago. It would make sense for them to have stayed here, like the Elders and the spirits who remained in their homelands even after their own passing. It would make sense for them to haunt the lonely mountain and the castle ruins, the shadow of the world they helped build only to see it destroyed.

The howling wind throws dust in their eyes, making it almost impossible to see. The thunder rolls, and the wanderer hurries to cross the empty space between the two rocks, dodging the falling stones just in time. Their feet are sore, and their eyes are puffy, but the way ahead of them is long.

They have walked the steep path enough times to almost know it by heart.

Perhaps they will master it one day, like those that showed them the way the first time the young child entered the stormy realm, like those that explained everything to them: the rocks and the pipes and the place from where there is no coming back. The mentors have long since joined the stars in the sky, but if they could see their apprentice now, they would be proud of what the youngster has achieved since they last met.

The traveller coughs and continues their way, paying attention to the direction and the strength of the wind. Sometimes, it is better to be patient and wait for the blast to calm down. Sometimes, stopping for a moment is fatal.

Finally hidden beneath a canopy, they breathe out and sit down, warming their hands at the friendly fire. After all the accidents with the falling stones, they have come to value this flame, the only light on this side of the hill.

It is while resting that they notice a figure standing on a cliff nearby. Dressed in dark ragged clothes, their long hair blowing in the wind, they almost look like part of the scenery, appearing as stiff and lifeless as the lonely rocks surrounding them.

What are they doing?

The traveller rises slowly to their feet and approaches the stranger. Their face is hidden, but their impeccable balance, their perfectly straight back and the fact that they managed to find this small patch of stone protected from all dangers in this perilous place hint at how old and experienced they must be.

A lot older than the child themself. But a lot younger than the Elders of the six realms.

The stranger turns around to face them despite the latter having made no noise while walking. The look in the person's eyes makes the child freeze in place. There is so much there, a blend of emotions so saturated it paints their irises black. The same hopeless black as the darkness of the void.

The figure cocks an eyebrow and smirks before returning to their indifferent expression, their eyes settling on the horizon once again. The sudden lighting makes them look like a villain from an old story for a moment, and this moment is enough for the young wanderer to make the connection.

“Oh, you're the Prince!”

The Prince does not speak for a while, and when they do, their voice sounds quiet and distant.

“I haven't been for a while now,” is all they say, eyes on the ashes and dust flying in the air.

The child hesitates for a moment, thinking.

"Oh, right! I'm so sorry, your Highness- your Majesty?" they try to correct themself, "I meant, you are the King! This is what you go by, right?.. Right?"

The only response they get is the roar of the wind as the side of the mountain starts crumbling again, pieces of rock falling dangerously close to where the two are standing. It gives the traveller chills, yet their interlocutor appears unperturbed.

"Doesn't matter much," the figure mutters, more to themself than to the child.

"I'm sorry?"

The Prince remains silent for a minute or so, and then turns and jumps down to the narrow pathway where the child is standing. Such closeness catches the latter off guard, and they take a step back, finding themself pressed against a wall. A perfect trap.

The stranger does not blink even once, staring with their dark eyes right into the other's. It feels scary, but not too much: the Prince, the child realises quickly, does not look at them at all. Their eyes are unfocused, directed at the person in front of them yet not seeing anything.

The traveller has seen people like this, physically present but with their mind far, far away. They are terrifying in their own way.

"What I have said is it holds little significance," the Prince speaks again after an unnaturally long and uncomfortable pause. They back a little, giving the child some space. The wanderer breathes out despite feeling a chill running down their spine.

"For any title you may feel tempted to address me by is but a word," the explanation follows. The stranger's convoluted sentences and the empty look in their eyes make them seem like a ghost of a distant past, detached completely from the reality they are surrounded by, "a prince or a king is one who enlightens the darkened and aids the helpless," they make one more pause before continuing, "and one that slaughters is undeserving of being called so."

The child's eyes wander over the other's face, hair and clothes, unsure where to settle, every detail of the stranger's semi-transparent body arousing a sense of unease. They do their best to keep calm while their heart pounds in their chest. The whole encounter seems like a fever dream, and the traveller desperately wants to wake up.

“Now what of you, little one?” the Prince asks all of a sudden in a sugary voice, and the child’s heart sinks in horror at the hunger in those unblinking eyes, “what leads you here, a young soul in the graveyard of your ancestors? What is it that you seek in this barren land?”

The wanderer is pressed against the wall again, pale and shivering, their knees too shaky for them to even pretend to be unaffected. They want to go home, far from the howling winds and the Ruler maddened by time and solitude.

There is a smile on their interlocutor’s face, one they have not seen even in their worst nightmares.

“Tell me, what is your destination? What is it that you strive to reach? You have been to the tip of the mountain before, have you not?” they take a step closer, a wild fire starting to dance in their eyes, “You have seen the sea of blood of your forebears, the tomb of those who tried to tame what is indomitable and those who paid for their misdeeds. You have witnessed the consequences of what was done to these lands,” one more step, and their body is pressed against the young traveller’s, “you know these people have got what they deserved. You know there is nothing to be done anymore.”

Their empty and disconnected look has disappeared, their features now distorted with fury. The child cowers and starts to nod frantically, praying that this reply will suffice.

“THEN WHY ARE YOU STILL FIGHTING?” the Prince roars, not unlike the thunder or the wind piercing the dead silence. The deafening scream echoes in the mountains for a long time before fading out.

The child sits still with their eyes shut, sobbing quietly as the wind blows around them and stones fall from the cliffs, shattering into pieces once they reach the bottom of the abyss.

When they open their eyes, the storm has calmed down.
