You want to know what that whole social media algorithm that's constantly pushing American content into my view without me wanting it to happen reminds me of
Being raped
Different intent, but a very similar emotional response

Why are social media algorithms important?
Ever wondered why social media algorithms matter? They filter out the noise, show you more of what you're interested in, personalize your experience, and maximize organic reach.
Filter Out the Content Noise
Algorithms prioritize relevant content, helping users navigate the vast amount of posts and focus on what matters to them.
Show Users More of What They’re Interested In
By analyzing user behavior, algorithms tailor feeds to display posts that align with individual interests, enhancing engagement.
Personalize User Experience
Algorithms curate content based on preferences, creating a more engaging and enjoyable experience for users on the platform.
Maximize Organic Reach
Understanding algorithms allows businesses to optimize their posts for visibility, increasing organic reach and attracting more followers without relying solely on ads.

How Sure Are You?
Lately I’ve been struck by a surprising phenomenon finding its way into all kinds of discussions. That would be the expression of certainty. It seems increasingly in many of the conversations I’m having that others have reached conclusions they feel no further need to revisit. It’s more than certainty. It’s absolute certainty. Here are some varied examples: Let me tell you what the Fed is…

It's a bit tepid and a bit late, but at this point I welcome any support from British celebrities of a certain age.

I'm going to tell you something that will be very hard to believe, but I swear to god it's true.
I know someone who, on THE DAY OF Biden's inauguration learned for the first time that we were about to have our first female Vice President.
This was a full adult person who had not heard about Kamala Harris until THE DAY OF the inauguration.
Somehow, not one person on their Facebook, Instagram, or Tiktok FYP had mentioned Kamala Harris.
Our algorithms are DIFFERENT. There are a lot of people in your life, probably more than you think, who do NOT know about the genocide in Palestine. They have NOT seen videos from journalists on the ground. They do NOT know how many people have been killed. They do NOT know about the starvation and famine. They do NOT know about the schools, hospitals, and refugee camps that have been bombed. They do NOT know about the mass graves.
I understand the frustration. I understand the bewilderment. I understand the anger.
Remember that the motivation that YOU feel is based on what YOU have seen, what YOU have read, what YOU have given the time and mental/emotional space to learn about.
Not everyone has done that. If that makes you angry, do something about it. BUT REMEMBER YOUR GOAL. Your goal is to increase the attention, money, and aid going to the people in Gaza. Punishing people for having an algorithm that's not exactly the same as yours does not achieve that goal. Start with education. Conversations. Providing resources. Sharing opportunities for aid.
It is not your job to punish. It is your job to provide. It is your job to funnel your frustrations productively, because your efforts are in service of the people of Palestine, not your own ego.

"As early as 2017, Wynn-Williams writes, Facebook was exploring ways to expand its ad targeting abilities to thirteen-to-seventeen-year-olds across Facebook and Instagram — a decidedly vulnerable group, often in the throes of adolescent image and social crises.
Though Facebook's ad algorithms are notoriously opaque, in 2017 The Australian alleged that the company had crafted a pitch deck for advertisers bragging that it could exploit "moments of psychological vulnerability" in its users by targeting terms like "worthless," "insecure," "stressed," "defeated," "anxious," "stupid," "useless," and "like a failure."
The social media company likewise tracked when adolescent girls deleted selfies, "so it can serve a beauty ad to them at that moment," according to Wynn-Williams. Other examples of Facebook's ad lechery are said to include the targeting of young mothers based on their emotional state, as well as emotional indexes mapped to racial groups, like a "Hispanic and African American Feeling Fantastic Over-index."
"To me, this type of surveillance and monetization of young teens’ sense of worthlessness feels like a concrete step toward the dystopian future Facebook’s critics had long warned of," Wynn-Williams reflects."

Publishing has always been a fucking nightmare, but now it’s a layer of hell. It’s not enough that writers be good at what they do. Writers have to maintain an active social media presence and cultivate a following. Be available.
They have to be conventionally attractive enough to look good enough to see on a screen, aesthetically pleasing, kind, funny, up-to-date on trends, socially aware but not so controversial that they turn off a brand from California from slapping their discount code on a video promoting a book.
They have to do all of this with no media training, with little help from the companies that are supposed to be doing this for them.
Of course, a lot of this isn't possible for say, the 40-something mother of two who teaches English at a school and writes on the side. She’s boxed out of an already complex industry that already has enough walls.
On some level, I think authors have always marketed themselves a little, but we’ve reached such a crazy point where we’re demanding the author become the influencer. Accessibility in publishing has narrowed from an inch to a sliver. And that inch was hard enough to get in as is.

Social media is training you to be more impatient. For the sake of curating your algorithm as fast as possible + as accurately as possible. It wastes your time so you feel like you have no more time to waste dealing with people. It rewards your wasted time + impatience with a meme. You curate your feed so you only see what you want to see, until it becomes unbearable to be patient with the diversity of life + its circumstances.
On top of all that, you also expect it to adapt with you as you mature. As you have human thoughts + change your entire perspective in the blink of an eye. That’s not what the algorithm is trained to understand. The algorithm is trained to react with how you’ve been reacting to it your entire time on that app. It isn’t capable of understanding how people can change their minds.
